On a custom rom but cannot get into recovery >_> - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT: So after various attempts at rooting(pureRoot, multi-tool etc - I was able to root and install the updated su binary With the Windroid app. Also, I now know that Vol Up selects in fastboot. thanks to all who replied.
So I have the Moto X 2014 pure edition & thought I had rooted and unlocked bootloader. (I did because I'm on a custom ROM now...) But somehow I retardedly forgot to flash gApps and now don't have any way of getting apps etc restored. I go into fast boot and hit "recovery" but it doesn't do anything. The only way I was able to flash this custom ROM was because I had twrp manager app installed on stock ROM. But now since I can't get any of my apps back, I'm stuck. I got superSu apk but it says binary needs to be updated and keeps coming up with an error every time I try. I'm thinking I need to root again? I'm kinda at a loss... Don't know what happened. Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Flash twrp recovery.

I'm pretty sure I did that like 3 times through adb before I switched over to a custom ROM.. Couldn't get into it so that's why I downloaded the twrp app. :/

Not to assume anything, but are you hitting the power button to select recovery from the fastboot menu? That was my mistake, lol. New to Moto. You have to hit volume up instead of power. That acts as the enter key for Moto. At least on this device. If that's what you're doing, can you connect to a computer and fastboot boot twrp.img ?

Wait so power isn't enter? I've been hitting power. -_- I could have swore power got me into recovery when I first rooted... I'm gonna try and if that's the problem. I'm such a fail at phones.

Okay so I got into recovery. d'oh! (Volume up selects. It says RIGHT THERE. Sorry guys lol) anyway, now my root apps can't verify root access. So I think I have to root again? It's been a couple years so please bear with me :/

[Q] Think I screwed up?

Ok so I have an unlocked Nexus One that I rooted when I first got the phone 6 months ago. I've been running CM6 no problems at all, everything has been great.
Heres where my problem starts I decided to flash the stock frf91 image onto the phone and did not check superuser permissions or whatever option they gave me before i did it. I was doing this because I thought I was selling my phone. Now I'm not and want to go back to CM6.
The problem is I cant get into recovery at all I get the error with the ! in a triangle with android standing next to it. I've searched everywhere and tried everything. Fastboot and ADB gives me errors like waiting for device (even though my drivers are up to date and it recognizes the phone?) or status failed too many links.
I tried doing a backup from my nandroid information through my nandroid backups on my computer (aka pulling system.img etc) I tried going through the terminal but Im getting denied superuser permissions.
Im just not sure where to go from here ive looked through so many articles and threads and posts and im very confused.
After I flashed the stock image I thought i would still be able to boot into recovery but i guess i dont have recovery? I try to flash the recovery but with no avail.
Anyone have any advice or even just somewhere to start I would really appreciate it. Thanks
When u flashed the stock rom it wasnt a rooted version so u have the stock recovery search for how to root the stock Rom once rooted u can put a custom recovery on there hope this helps
The procedures for the different handsets kind of blur together in my memory, so just want to check.
When you booted into recovery and got the "!" screen with the android did you try holding either the volume up, or volume down key <along with the power button> to bring up the menu?
The ! With the Android is the stock recovery image if I remember correctly if u press the power button the menu should pop up

[Q] Soft/Hard Bricked, Lost Root, Lost Recovery, USB Not Recognized

Hi all, this is a last ditched effort at maybe saving my phone. I did an update on my SU and for some unknown reason it rebooted my phone. It then loaded up my rom until the kernel settings loaded then rebooted once again. I then tried to go into recovery to flash a backup and it booted me straight into my unlocked fastboot. I then tried to reboot once again in hopes I could fast navigate into twrp through rom manager, once in I was prompted that I no longer had root. I then decided to start over from scratch and load a recovery in fastboot. Once I had everything good to go I plugged everything in and instead of recognizing my phone as a drive, HTC manager popped up instead. I then updated my drivers to see if maybe that would fix the problem with no luck. I am at a loss at this point. I would greatly appreciate any help you guys can offer.

It then loaded up my rom until the kernel settings loaded then rebooted once again. This is completely normal, you should have just rebooted the phone and been done I then tried to go into recovery to flash a backup and it booted me straight into my unlocked fastboot. Again totally normal, thats the bootloader use the vol to move down and choose recovery and hit power this will boot you to TWRP I then tried to reboot once again in hopes I could fast navigate into twrp through rom manager, once in I was prompted that I no longer had root. I then decided to start over from scratch and load a recovery in fastboot. Why ? I was doing a SU update. It restarted into a loop that boots about 1 min after the splash screen then resets. I've tried to redownload root through SU app as I can no longer connect through usb but it reboots to soon. I used Rom Manager to try and get into recovery as a second alternative.

http://download.chainfire.eu/372/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.86.zip
flash in recovery
use adb push UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.86.zip /data/media/0
to get the file on the phone
Reboot to bootloader / fastboot USB
and from command line on pc
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
I cant understand why people using those ROm manager apps to install stuff. And you said it rebooted after you update your SU. Then i tink you pressed reboot into recovery instead of NORMAL. Am i wrong?

I no longer have a recovery to be able to flash anything. When I try to load into recovery it just boots right back into fastboot. I was just using rom manager to boot into recovery after I couldn't get into recovery through fastboot, not to flash anything. I was updating Super Su through the actual app itself. it seemed to be downloading something when it rebooted itself and I lost root, recovery and the ability to connect to my computer.

I have updated SuperSU many times and never got any problem so there is something you did. Are you on custom or stock rom?
Are you s-off / unlocked bootloader?

My bootloader is unlocked and i'm running Viperrom. I've never gone through the process of s-off but for some reason it says it at the top of my fastboot screen...not sure if that's normal or not.

Ok. I think you need to reflash recovery again.
Boot into bootloader and fastboot usb
then download TWRP recovery from here http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7 and pick 2.6.3.3-m7.img
put it into your fastboot folder and flash it "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7.img and hit enter
now try to reboot into recovery. When there Wipe Dalvik and Cache and reboot. If recovery ask you to root your device then accept it and reboot.
Remember to connect phone to right USB port not 3.0. Use 2.0 port and try annother cable also.

I've tried a few different cords and all 3 ports I have still nothing but the HTC manager thing. It will recognize it but only for a split second while booting up but it says HTC BUTTERFLY as the drive and i'm not sure if that's a problem or not but it won't recognize it at all through fastboot.
you cant boot up. if it doesnt recognize it in bootloader mode then i dont know.
Try restart PC. Maybe you have several adb at same time. Adn uninstall htc sync if not but keep drivers

I hadthe same problem after flashing a kernel. I repeatedly tried the bootloader (audiodown key + power button) until it started. Recovery was not available, in the red triangle screen press audio up key,got the system recovery screen, wipe cache, reboot the system and then try installing Twrp recovery. It worked.

I'm not familiar with the red triangle screen is there a way to boot into it?
Grizmen what are you talking about. Why should you boot into red triangle? There is no menu called red triangle. Only on stock recovery.

I think @jpaulpra was telling him to reflash stock recovery
then boot to it and do clear cache.. then reflash twrp
When I got into bootloader, I lost the Twrp recovery. So when I selected recovery I got the screen with a "triangle and exclamation mark". If you leave it will reboot the system after couple of minutes. But if the audio up key is pressed, it will show a system recovery screen, where cache can be wiped

Basically all I'm trying to do now it's find a way to get my computer to recognize my phone as a drive. When I go into viper settings and go to advance menu (with the short time I have before boot loop) there is an option to mount drive. When I select the option to do so it hands on splash screen and I have to hold power button to recycle back on. Once back in it's no longer selected. I've never seen a boot loop go pay the flash screen. Is this normal?
Pretty SOL with my son's Nabi2
I'm having a issue with my sons Nabi2 pretty similar. I messed up bigtime guys I rooted it and started messing aroung with the system files. Then didn't get a boot afterwards, wiped everything from twrps system, data, the whole shabang! Even lost my root! and access to on board flash cause I've been trying to recover using twrp with absolutley no luck. I still have the original stock unrooted backup saved to my pc from when I first installed twrp. Can someone please help me? I'm really out here trying to reach out for some help. didn't even know where to post this. Thank you guys. Note to moderators: If this is the wrong place to post this then please point me to the right direction and I apologize.

[Q] Can't access Recovery Mode, stock TWRP or CWM.

I have the vs980-26a rooted Verizon LG G2, I used Stumproot and it checks out. But now I'm attempting to flash Paranoid Android, but can't access the Recovery Mode any way, from powerdown and buttons, from ROM Manager and Quick Boot while the phone is on, or from the PC adb. I get to this screen with a dead android guy, red triangle coming out of his chest and the words No Command. No button inputs so anything, I can't access the menu with volume, only thing that seems to affect it is holding power until it just shuts off...
I've tried this with stock recovery, TWRP and CWM, and the Paranoid Android says technically only TWRP is supported so I'm shooting for that, but I have no idea what I'm doing wrong at this point.
Thanks for reading, hope to hear from you soon.

I'm pretty sure Rom Manager won't install recovery on 26A, you need to downgrade some things on the phone before you can install it, try AutoRec or Freedom Tools.

Can't enter recovery mode???

I can't seem to figure out how to enter into recovery mode on my T-Mobile G4. It's running everything completely stock. I have tried holding power button and volume up until the logo comes on and releasing both buttons and then immediately holding them both down again waiting.. and nothing happens. I've even tried waiting for one second after I initially release to hold them down again. Same outcome. It always just boots back up into Android. I have tried volume down instead.. Nothing. Can someone please show me how to boot into recovery mode? Again, running stock rom.
I had the same issue. This is what I did to resolve it.
1. Enable Developer Options (see here).
2. root the phone (see here).
3. Download TWRP for the LG G4 H811 from here.
4. Install Flashify from the Play store.
5. Open Flashify and select Recovery Image -> Choose file and select the file from Step 2 to install TWRP
6. Reboot to TWRP from Flashify
When I was on the factory ROM I had to repeat steps 5 & 6 any time I wanted to boot into recovery (TWRP). None of the other boot options worked for me. Not button combinations and not even using adb (adb reboot bootloader). So what I did next is I decided to try another ROM. I installed one of the CM12.1 nightlies. Now running on CM12.1 I can boot into recovery without issue. I have no idea what is in the stock ROM that made it impossible to boot to recovery. I haven't been very motivated to go back to the stock ROM to do any further troubleshooting.

So, you're saying that there is no other way to get into recovery, but to root the phone first? I was hoping I didn't have to do that.. I haven't researched how to properly save the stock rom in case I need to get back to it because I need to bring it to the store for some reason or another..

If there is a way I didn't find one. There very well may be a way to do this. I just didn't put in more than a couple of hours of effort.
That's not what I'm talking about. That's talking about factory resetting your phone with the hardware keys. I'm talking about entering recovery mode (kinda like the bios of the phone) using the hardware keys.. It's different.

I'm starting to think T-Mobile did something different with their variant to disable people from entering recovery mode.. This is irritating. I'd like to have the option of doing so in case I need to re-calibrate my battery or anything else that I'd need access to the recovery for.

I have been trying a few different ROMs over the last few days. The modified stock ROM (Genisys) is pretty much the same as the stock minus some bloatware and it is rooted. I have no issue booting into recovery from it. Maybe that is worth a try for you?

Alright.. I guess, I'll have to try that, but first is there any way to do a backup of some sort in case I have to go back to stock rom rooted? I got my G4 about a month ago and haven't done much research on rooting this specific device. I haven't had a high end phone with rooting and rom options in a long time. The last phone I had a chance to root and install cool custom roms on was a Samsung Galaxy S2. If you can guide me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. I guess I have to start from square one again. In the past I remember that in order to go back to completely stock you had to have a usb jib to reset the flash counter. Is it the same for this case? I welcome anyone's helpful input. Thanks, everyone.

Deleted all but TWRP

Hi, due to my stupidity I advance wipe all my data using twrp. All data is gone but thankfully twrp prevails. Is it safe to install cm12 or 13 ever after wiping everything? On CM12 or 13 thread instruction, it says I need to be in latest kitkat or lollipop to flash however, I'm coming from nothing, everything is wiped and twrp is all that remains.
Yes. In TWRP recovery mode, when you plug into your PC, the computer will see the phone like a flash drive. You can drag over the ROM and GAPPs files you need.

You cannot wipe your radio or bootloader using TWRP, so those are still there. Yes, you can install those with a USB OTG.

Man i made a huge mistake and did the same thing not knowing that changing file systems would wipe everything. My huge issue is that i dont have a power button, mine failed and unfortunately I had to pull it out cause it was just constantly rebooting. Which not having the button was not an issue with being able to power the phone with the wireless charger till now. Is there anyway to boot into recovery using fastboot? Adb is not an option cause there's no OS, or is it? Any help would be very much appreciated, this is extremely embarrassing none the less.

I too have a non-functional power button on my moto maxx 1250, which is a pain at times though I have been able to get by on custom CM roms, with the right apps (lockscreen, quick reboot), rom setup (ambient display, wake with volume buttons), and diligence to the herein xda forum devs' flashing instructions.
In order to use fastboot to boot into recovery (assuming you are using TWRP and have moto drivers installed), what I do is have the TWRP.img file within the same folder where ADB.exe/ fastboot.exe is stored. I then use adb to reboot into bootloader using "adb reboot-bootloader" then type "fastboot boot twrp.img"** when in bootloader mode.
**twrp.img is the file name within my adb folder; if the file name is "twrp-3.0.2-0-quark.img", then the command would be "fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-quark.img" . As long as the phone/device is recognized by your pc, you should reboot into recovery.
Thanks I appreciate the reply! The only deal was I couldn't connect through adb due to no ROM installed. Ended up having to flash basically back to stock, parse chunk by parse chunk lol and am about to flash back to RR MM as soon as I download the radios right now. Bhb is the man not only with dttw on the ROM but the recovery as well.

My bad man, I misread your earlier post and didn't realize you were completely sans ROM. The closest experience I've had without the power button was a while ago, when I flashed the wrong version of a ROM and got stuck in a bootloop. I had to wait until the battery died and then plugged my phone in to my PC, while holding the volume down button just so I could get into boot loader mode.
Thank God for the info on the quark forums, fastboot and TWRP recovery to get back to having a working piece of hardware, lol.

No worries at all and that's for sure, can't really afford the replacement at the moment so with no power button and cracked display after almost a year in possession (which is a record for me I might add) I'm riding this one till the wheels fall off. Plus RR MM is just a ridiculously awesome ROM.
