Emei Null... EFS folder deleted - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am in India and just purchased an unlocked t mobile note 4 yesterday.
I rooted it and installed Maximum Overdrive ROM. Now EMEI is gone and shows null. I did do a backup of efs using Dr. Ketan EFS backup app but somehow the folder got deleted.
Please suggest if there is any way to recover the emei? Please suggest. THANKS

Isn't the IMEI number located under the battery?

it is there... but since its shows null when I check by *#06# phone is not reading the SIM card... says SIM card is not registered
Its an unlocked T mobile phone

I'm not comfortable giving you any advice at this point because you're clearly using this phone in an international unlocked way and any advice I could provide could lead to further damage. You can Google Search "Restore IMEI without EFS Backup" and find guides that will help, but if you decide to follow them that will be on you. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Thanx for reverting mate... got it fixed... flashed stock kitkat old version and everything is working fine now... :good:

Glad to hear everything is working fine now, if possible make a brand new EFS backup and store it off the phone. I have tried different apps and by default most store the folder in the phone (which doesn't make any sense) so i had to manually export it. I am currently using EFS Manager(IMEI)-Note4 which lets you backup to the SD and cannot recommend it enough.

did that already mate... this time I have copied complete folder as well using root explorer...
cant take chances

IMEI number changed from rom

I have been a flash oholic for the past year and for the first time when i go off work today i had no service and looking into it my imei number does not match what is on the back of the phone. I have not flashed anything since yesterday and it worked very good all day until 5:00. Any ideas?

I had the same problem today. I was accused of having a stolen phone (same captivate I have had for 2 years, bought from AT&T store). Then I was told that someone reported my phone stolen. Then I was told that I put my SIM in an iPhone. Then I was told that I was using a stolen pre-pay phone. Finally, I was told that there was some mistake, and my phone might be fixed within 24 hours. Total call time was over 3 hours. Still not working. When I try to make a call, I get "sorry, this device has been blocked". AT&T's crack team is on it though.
I believe it is from the "generic" IMEI that my ROM is reporting (IMEI ends in 640000). I have been looking for ways to restore my IMEI to the correct one, but all I am finding is information about how it is a class C felony in the US to change an IMEI number.

Did you flash an ICS ROM? If you did, you might want to check your internal SD and look for a folder named "backup". It contains a backup copy of your "efs" folder. Copy everything from that folder and paste everything to your "/efs" folder. Reboot your phone, fix permission and you should be good.

So I was on the the phone with at&t and couldn't figure it out. about 3 hours later i got a text on my wife's phone that it was restored. So all is good now. They also thought it was an Iphone and stolen.

Same story I was getting. This will happen to you again (I have been through it twice). The IMEI ending in 640000 is not a valid IMEI, and it is on the blacklist. AT&T is not the only carrier now disabling access for having IMEI's that are reported as stolen.
To restore your IMEI, follow the instructions from Nick0703.

I can't seem to find a backup folder or /efs folder. is it inside another folder i am not seeing?
It may be in the /mnt/sdcard depending on the app you are using for file explorer.

Yeah it's "/mnt/sdcard" (I use Root Explorer). Then look for the "backup" folder.

I had the same thing happen to me on the same day you did. At around the same time as well. The weird thing was my imei's were correct. Luckily I was able to work out. That's pretty strange.

This happened on my GS2. I had several EFS backups, but none of them successfully restored. I ended up sending it to Samsung for warranty repair.
That's weird, I successfully used that IMEI for a day after flashing ICS with no problems. Usually you can fix it by flashing to stock as long as there weren't changes to efs.

hello, my imei done the exact thing its the same as in software as under the battery, but Samsung sees the imei as a Samsung focus which is sgh-i917 which is a windows 7 phone the phone that I have even kies sees it as Samsung galaxy s 4g sght959v android phone. would you have any I dea how to fix this? thanks just for reading, or stir me to a person that might know many thanks
my imei is totally blank. been fine and bam it just went after i rebooted my phone. was using a custom rom but have been on that rom for 4-5 monthsso i dont understand the issue. dealt with it at my carrier's live chat and they simply said its a stolen phone but ive had this phone well ocer 2-3 years! now im using it without network coverage etc. bullsh*t.
There is a way to restore IMEI. The easiest one is backup your data, flash stock GB ROM (use Odin one-click files), verify IMEI is back, update OS to whatever you like, restore your data. Odin one-click back to stock files are in Android Development section, look at the Sticky threads. Read this Guide to update the OS to latest stable CyanogenMod (CM10.1.3 Android 4.2.2 based). Lost IMEI is common issue with Captivate, but it's easy to fix.

do you have your old imei anywhere? like written down or as a backup file? there are apps for imei backup and restore in the play store... if you dont have a backup of your original imei i don't thinm there is any way of recovering it.

If you don't have backups you can't recover it, you will need a service box or send back to samsung, but that's risky, because that's not covered by the warranty.
Which files/folders have you copied exactly ?

I've overwritten entire EFS partition thru dd.
I do not had backup and the partition was already corrupted.
Sent from my GT-I9070 using xda app-developers app
The original imei should be available on the box in which the phone is shipped. Search it. Then you will have to dd the efs partition as an image file and edit the imei in it using hex.
It's difficult, but your original imei can be recovered!
I do not respond to tech support via PM
I tried it on my phone (ace 2 - same novathor chipset) but after I flashed a new efs my imei still was the same.
Are you sure you didn't changed anything else ?
Also you can try this: *#197328640# in dialer, and search for "NV Restore" or "NV Rebuild" option (for me it's under "Common") I'm not sure how it works, but maybe the phone has some backups on a different partition.

I've tried to delete every file on /efs but cloned IMEI remains.
I think that IMEI is stored or cached anywhere else.
I already tried that option (NV Restore).
Modemfs also contains some files from the EFS partitions RFHAL.DEF/RFHAL folder.
Have you flashed a JB or any firmware with repartition ?
I noticed from a log file in /efs/pre_recovery.log, when the device is repartitioned there is an additional check if the imei is valid or requires a restore.

Exactly, my 3G stopped working after downgrade using Philippines ROM and I tried check repartition.
My 3G started to work after I copied modemfs partition from my friend device.
Do you know how to recover from that?
Sent from my GT-I9070 using xda app-developers app
Well if you don't have backups it's difficult because I can't even tell where the phone stores the imei, or how does it work.
Of course it's possible to reverse encryption and edit the files from your friends phone but it's VERY difficult.
It's clearly uses a different method, because there is no nv_data.bin (on other Samsung devices the imei/simlock/product code are stored in this file).
If I find anything I'll let you know.
The cheapest sollution is offered by this guy: http://forum.samdroid.net/f70/repair-imei-s2-5729/
Or a very risky sollution: Brick the device and send back to the repair center if it's still under warranty.
Edit: Try flashing that rom again with repartition and see what happens, also check the efs/pre_recovery.log, for me says "valid IMEI & skip restore" so obviously there are at least 2 places for the imei, that's why for me doesn't changes even if I wipe the efs.
I've lost the imei some months ago and i've solved flashing the italian GB firmware, but you can also use another firmware.

You probably flashed a wrong modem, but basically you didn't lost your IMEI, just the modem part wasn't for your device and it couldn't get the info.
This usually happens when you flash a firmware from different region, for example i9070L rom on i9070 device.

There's no way to regenerate/restore the modem part?
I wrote this to giagia96.
In your case I don't know why the phone "decided" to change the imei.

[q] please help with invalid imei

I purchased a Tmobile Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 on ebay. It has CyanogenMod version 10.1-20130827 istalled with phone capabilities. I did insert my sim card and had the message IMEI is invalid. Am unable to get any network. Can anyone please help me as to how to go around around this IMEI error message. Thank you
restock. Your EFS partition is likely corrupted.
In theory, flashing stock ROM should get your EFS back.
If so, then backup the /EFS content, and you can upgrade to CM10.1 again.
If the IMEI is still bad at that point, you can manually restore the EFS using your backup copy.
Thank you for the response. Can you please direct me or provide a link as to how I can flash the stock rom. Am very fresh on such matters. Thanks once again.

[Q] IMEI NULL/NULL Baseband UNKNOWN

My brother owns an AT&T cappy...n after some months of custom rom flashing, he gave me the phone asking me to repair it.
It has stopped reading the sim card, when i checked the imei of the device it gave me a popup of IMEI null/null..also the baseband version is also unknown..
I have many a times flashed the stock rom as every thread about my problem is telling me to do..
also used galaxy s unlock, app for factory unlocking GS devices..but know success
i seriously want to give it a last try before handing it over for a repair outside..
any help would be highly appreciated!!!!!:crying:
Yep, usually using Odin or Heimdall to return to stock firmware should restore the imei. Have u tried to flash to Stock KK4 firmware yet ? The Odin or Heimdall One Clicks for i897ucKK4 can be found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3.
yess!! many a times..but no success
I also wanted to add that :-
during the galaxy s unlock method..i usually get the busybox problem error...though i've installed and verified it many a times
With all the months of flashing that ur brother did...i would think there would be a backup of the efs folder on the sdcard?? Some roms and kernels, when flashed, will create the efs backup for u.
yess!! hopefully dere's an EFS folder.. but i was too bugged up when googling for the method for restoring it..
n also i'm not sure whether the folder is fine or corrupted/messed up..
also i'll be greatful if i'll get to know the easiest step by step process of restoring it.:good:

[Q] lost imei

I have nexus 6 in Canada.
I had android 5.0.1. I know it was 5.0.x stock - not OTA updated.
I decided to install chroma rom using the thread here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/rom-chroma-01-11-2015-t3000003
I installed twrp, and chroma.
I followed the instructions and it worked.
I didn't flash a radio myself. just the chroma rom, gapps, and supersu.
It worked yesterday.
This morning I got a message that android phone app stopped.
I could not make phone calls or sms.
I didn't put much thought into the error message.
I wanted something more stock and I just installed lightrom.
I only installed lightrom, no other flashing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/rom-5-1lightromstock-lmy47e-03-19-2015-t3059493
The problem persists -- no phone calls or sms.
now:
I looked at my about phone in the settings and it says unknown IMEI.
Any pointers to how I can fix this?
Did you flash correct radio ?
Can you see your imei ?
If nothing works flash latest stock.

What does it say when you type *#06* into the dialer
I see unknown imei in settings about phone status imei info.
I didn't flash a radio individually. I don't know if one of the roms flashed a radio with it.

hi david,

can you upload "twrp backup of the efs partition" please...

david please share efs backup from twrp, hope it help others
His efs backup will not help others. It is unique to his device and will only work for his. Its basically a I'd number. Loosing an imei is serious stuff and makes your phone useless. I'm glad you had a backup. Now I'm curious how so it don't happen to others. Flashing radios won't wipe efs.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
Should I make backup of EFS partition from time to time? Is it change? Is it depend on ROM? I made a backup after I unboxed Nexus. I have EFS backup on my phone, notebook and external hard drive... I hope it is safe
I had the same issue with a Galaxy S5 a while ago, I had to search and find a IMEI repair tool, which I don't think you will find on XDA as it can be used for bad purposes. But they are out there.
You only need 1 backup but the question is how this is happening. I see a lot of threads about it. So its an issue that we all need to figure out how and get preventative measures figured out

From what I've heard, if you flash all of the stock components through ADB (ROM, bootloader, modem, etc), it will trigger a rebuild of the EFS. I'm not 100% sure of this, but I remember reading something along those lines. I believe the phone has a backup partition for the EFS (which contains the IMEI, MAC Addresses, etc).

As others have said. The EFS backup is unique to my device. It won't help you with yours.
If you absolutely cannot regenerate it with the method I said, warranty service is your best bet.
