Ok I have Froyo 2.2 running on my Captivate but I cannot force the browser to browse pages in desktop mode instead of wap/mobile mode.
I tried about:debug from the browser to change the advanced settings but the UAString value is not displayed in the list at all, the last time is Set JS flags.
Does anyone really know how to set this on 2.2 with the captivate?

Thanks for the response I was looking for something a little more informative, are you telling me I need to edit files in a package, etc? Just to enable this?
Probably the easier solution would be just to use the Dolphin HD browser and set the user agent to desktop if all you want is to avoid the re-direct to the mobile sites.
I've done that, and Skyfire as well, but I am not sure how flash 10.1 works with the other browsers or if it works with all of them. I know Skyfire intercepts and tries to play them with its only build.
I am also curious why the UAString value is omitted from the debug settings on the default browser to begin with.
I also found that I had to actually manually install 10.1 it was not installed after updating to 2.2
I am also a little disappointed with the sept.11 build of 2.2 I installed, it does not feel faster than the stock 2.1 as a matter of fact web browsing is worse, and so is screen transitioning on the desktop compared to 2.1. Not sure why.
-i have the same problem, i try to load a site and i get the mobile version , and i try the skyfire, dolphin browser hd and nothing ...

I used Dolphin HD to watch a full episode of the Daily Show from the website, so I know for a fact flash works with it, and keeps it from re-directing to the mobile site. Must be some kind of EUE.
Open the browser then on the address type:
about:debug
Then go to settings, scroll all the way down and enable normal rendering.
That's it.

-don't work!!!
I know Hulu is blocking **** so thats expected but its still detecting Dolphin and Skyfire with the correct Strings set.
I know Flash is working but since 2.1 had some sort of flash support previously its hard if the new one is working if it does not show "HD" options.
Since setting UAString cannot be done via debug menu for the default browser, in 2.2 on the build on my captivate I will just wait it out and see if someone figures it out I guess.
Its odd that even with skyfire set to desktop, that Hulu can detect the version still.

It works for me
not for all sites.
This may be because the website uses other aspects besides just UAString. For instance, even though both a PC and a phone have flash 10.1 I am positive there is still a way for a website to indicate which is a mobile version. Also it can use screen res, IP address (unlikely), and other factors. Most likely it is flash player having its own useragent.

In regards to the framework-res.apk...
There is an xml file in there that has the user agent string that our phones are using. I don't remember exactly where it is. perhaps framework-res.apk/scripts/???/
Like I said I'm not sure where it is. It is a lot easier to mess with it on stock than it is on Cognition, Sheps, etc.
Hulu will ONLY work if we are able to change that setting. Skyfire, Opera, etc wont because it still has the string settings.

ok, there are several things I need to point out about this post
a) flash 10.1 will work with non-stock browsers like Dolphin HD, Skyfire uses it's own method to circumvent flash and I don't believe there's a way around it
b) UAString is omitted probably because there is no real need to change that for most users, and the above method for "enable normal rendering" does prevent redirects to mobile, but it doesn't change the UAString (in mobile, it's more importat to have an option to switch to desktop mode than change the UAString)
c) flash 10.1 was installed across every other person's device running 2.2, likely you had an update in the market, but everyone else who installed 2.2 had it. Also, android 2.2 != flash 10.1. Android 2.2 is the version of the OS capable of running 10.1, but there are requirements and licensing issues, so it doesn't necessarily come preloaded on every 2.2 device
d) where are you getting this "september 11th" build date from? I assume you're looking at kernel version [email protected] #1? that means a user named "jetaek.lee" made a build on a COMPUTER NAMED "sep-11". if you knew how to check build.prop, you would see this build was made on 9/21 and that the "sep-11" name showed up on the 2.1 kernel built in June. And considering it was only leaked at the start of october, it was only a week or two old at the time. I'm sick of people complaining about literally the dumbest thing imaginable.
e) the "laggy browser" issue has already been acknowledged and there is a SIMPLE fix available in the forums, search for it.
FWIW, Skyfire uses both the regular flash 10.1 as well as its own streaming implementation. So, you can use the standard flash for most websites but if there is a flash video that is slow you use the skyfire converted stream.

- Yes, I concur
@Kaik541
Well I have only had this phone for 3 days so I cannot say I am an expert on it but I can form a reasonable opinion on the differences in performance in a pre-released leaked version of 2.2 and the stock 2.1 and I am not entirely sure that is complaining about the stupidest thing.
Everything else however you posted I kinda knew but was not sure of hence the post. =)
I agree will prob just stick will Skyfire or Dolphin (although Dolphin worked on fewer sites for me than Skyfire did.)
Will have to see if the release version of 2.2 is optimized.
Hey guys, I have been trying to get a couple things tweaked in the stock browser, and kept getting advice that simply did not work on my device.
I have finally found out how to get the stock ATT bookmarks fully gone, and better yet, have figured out a way to have the browser maintain your user agent (and any other settings you change in the debug menu) after reboot/reload of browser.
You must have root access and a little know-how.
For the bookmark removal you need the app SQLite Editor, which you will then use to navigate to the "Internet" app database, then browser2.db, then bookmarks.
From here you can just delete out the lines with the offending bookmarks, or change them so they are editable.
Awesome!
For making the browser maintain debug mode, and therefore any settings you set in debug mode (aka user agent), you will be editing an XML file.
Using a root enabled file browser go to;
/data/data/com.android.browser/shared_prefs/
and edit the file "com.android.browser_preferences.xml"
*note you may need to change the permissions of the file first
In this file you will be ADDING this line;
<boolean name="debug_menu" value="true" />
I added it to the top of the file.
Now debug mode will always be on by default, and any settings you enable or disable in there will be remembered even after a reboot.
I like this method of User agent assignment, because I also use a couple other options in the debug menu.
My personal tips for debug menu options;
I recommend turning on "light touch" (seems to help with scrolling), "Normal Rendering" (makes pages look like they do on regular pc browser), and I also disable "wide Viewport" which also helps with "Normal Rendering" to display pages more like they are viewed on a desktop.
Some of those settings are more about personal preference, I personally like to see the webpages as close to how they look on my desktop as possible.
As a side note, in addition to making pages look more like they do on a desktop, changing these things seems to speed up the overall rendering of the browser.
For example when scrolling through large pages, there seems to be much less time taken for it to draw the new parts of the page, so you rarely are looking at white squares while the browser is redrawing that area of the page.
I think the "Normal Rendering" is what speeds this up the most.
very interesting but have you tried the rom Overcome for 10.1-8.9?? The browser does all his and more synchronizes perfectly your favorites!!!
This uses a modified version of the stock browser by Motorola for its Xoom.

Absolutely correct, no roms and no cwm recovery, just root.

What file manager did you use? I tried astro and file manager HD, but I could not access the folder. Oddly enough, when I checked the root user option in file manager HD, it said my device was not rooted. My wifi tether for root app works fine and superuser seems to be running ok. I rooted with the initial method that Orlando organized a week or so ago.

I know that the specified ROM Overcome exists for the 10.1 and 8.9 only, for the LTE so NOT!
It is also relatively easy to copy the files browser.apk and chromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk from Overcome in any other ROM than any other tablet (must have root access).
I did it with the stock rom 10.1 (P7500) and it works perfectly!

Are you sure?? you are a programmer to say this??
But I'm sure it works because all the apk are hardware-independent and then work on each device (in this case tablet). Only S.O. must be the same.
In two weeks I will have in hand both the 10.1 (Tegra 2) that the 8.9 LTE (Qualcomm 8660) and I can verify it, then I'll let you know on this thread

No, it does not work. Go ahead and try, you'll have a non-functional browser. Samsung optimized that version for the Tegra 2, bigger than ****.

I want to use the browser that is not optimized by Samsung because it is the optimized version by Motorola for its Xoom.
The version is 3.2.2 and there is no stock browser on Samsung tablet honeycomb that has this version.
However, when I can I check because right now I can not be 100% sure that it works

The tegra 2 optimized version of the browser may "work" as in let you install it and use it to some degree, but you loose the hardware acceleration that is built into the stock samsung android browser for the Qualcom chip.
So it may work, but you will be running in software mode.
For the life of me I cannot post a video on a friends wall on Facebook and get the URL preview.
I've tried lots of things like using the developer page to check if the meta data is there, yep its there. If I use my computer to make the post...yep the preview works. But something about windows phone 8...i have never gotten the preview to work. Are client side script languages disabled or something, why is this? Anyone have the same issue?
You're not alone, got the issue aswell. On my HTC 8S AND on my iPhone (strangely, since it worked before..)
Are you using an app or the web browser? If the browser, do you have it set to "desktop mode" in Settings (this is just a user-agent string switch, but it should give you the "real" Facebook page as you would see on a PC).
I regret thoughtlessly letting my ES File Explorer update whenever it wanted. The newer versions seem to have a lot of problems with updating the screen and are, in general, sluggish on my NST.
I currently have version 3.2.5.1. Does anyone have an older version on hand?

The version I am currently using (attached) I've had for at least a year, and it has never failed me. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what the version is, since I'm using your framework-res mod and the gray text blends in with the gray background
Hope this helps!
To my aging bi-focal enhanced vision that is version 3.0.9.0. It would likely be completely unreadable without the framework mod.
Thanks a bunch. It's much better behaved. No more updates on that one!

Glad to be of assistance. Don't forget that you can turn off Auto-Update by navigating [Quick Access Menu > Settings > Update settings > Uncheck "Auto check"]. That way, you aren't ever "tempted" to update to the next version

It's very odd. It almost never works, but once in a blue moon, I'll try it, and it functions correctly. I've just resorted to ignoring it and using the "swipe to the left or right" function to change the view.
I am not sure that we are thinking about the same thing. I'll try to explain. In default mode when brosing directories I see an icon grid with very limited space for filenames. It is irritating when I try to choose the correct one from whole bunch of similar named ones, when the differencr is at the end of their file name, which is shortened/hidden. I want to change the vie mode from grid to list or something similar that would allow the filenames to be displayed fully. Do you have any solution for this? (Now I switch to Root Browser when I really need the list view, but that is quite an inconveniance)

Oh - pardon my mistake, there, I had forgotten what the view button actually did!
I do know to what you're referring, but I can't say that I know of a way to do that at the moment. However, I'm doing some research and experimentation to see f I can find out either an alternate way to switch views or a way to fix the f/c hitting "View" gives us. I'll keep you posted.
Not sure why I didn't find this the first time I went looking, but here is a place with many older versions of the app. Scroll down the page until you get to "previous versions" then hit the "view more" button.
I tried the earliest v. 3.x and it still produced the crash on "view"--something I had never noticed before with whatever version I originally had. Probably I never tried it.
The last 1.6x version (1.6.2.3) is stylistically a little different but has the (crashless) option to change from icons to list format AND the settings menu system is like the native B&N settings menu (yay!), i.e., you can read it easily.
Not sure about all other capabilities, but I'm easy on what I ask it to do. I use Root Browser for the heavy duty stuff.
Thanks, guys (sorry for the delay)!
Thanks - the newer version does work, but requires a lot of patience until screens are displayed correctly. I was always wondering why eStrongs still pushes updates to 2.1 devices that are too memory hungry to run properly - but here we go.
another reason to love this old version
I went to do some file cleanup this morning and made the discovery seen in the attached screen image: -)
No similar behavior on current market versions.
Just got the p30 pro and it's a bit of a learning curve to access features from a oneplus.
1) Is it possible to access location mode on the p30pro?
In my older phones, I had access to 'High accuracy', 'Battery saving' and 'Device only'.
Can't seem to find that setting here.
2) The authentication page for a public WIFI network forces login via the huawei browser.
My default browser is set to Chrome, but it doesn't state so in default apps.
i don't wish to use the huawei browser. Is this a problem with EMUI not recognising I've set the default browser to chrome , or is there some other way of forcing the automatic authentication to use chrome instead of the huawei browser?
3) Does the front camera have zoom?
4) Can wallpapers be disabled?
cheers
1. Remember seeing it somewhere before but cant seem to find it now lol. Will update this shortly.
2. Settings- Search Default apps - Change browser to Chrome or whichever you want. Then it should open chrome by default
3. No zoom on the front camera and i guess no one zooms in on a selfie. Take a picture and crop it.
4. What you mean by wallpapers be disabled ? The megazine unlock ?
1. Please do.
2. I tried numerous times. It seems like the settings don't save the default app to chrome. It just remains as "default" which I assume is the Huawei browser. Maybe it's a bug?
3. I found another installed huawei app called mirror. That has zoom.
4. I meant I want a black or no background. Just plain.
Thanks.

2. Default is chrome... if it is set to Huawei Browser, it changes in default apps to Huawei Browser. If it is using Huawei Browser for Wifi Login this is similiar "bug" if you can call it that to iPhone using Safari for wifi even though chrome can be used for everything else... its probably has to do with the integration of the phone settings pack since it has to be something always on the phone in case you need it... since Huawei browser can't be uninstalled, this is probably the case...
3. Does mirror actually take pictures?
4. Just get a black box picture jpg or png and set as background... :good:

1. Think it's controlled by huawei's system so no way to change it, the one i saw was on my s10 plus. Im sorry, made a mistake.
2. I think they made it that way , can't try it my self here since there's no hotspot to test it out. Its like some china phones, when you install google keyboard and when it comes to type it the password, it reverts back to their stock keyboard.
3. Removed mirror app as soon as i booted it up after purchase
4. As mahst68 mentioned above, google amoled pure black wallpaper and then it will be all black.
1. Yes. Mine was on one plus. Useful.
2. Ah. Chrome is default. OK. Terrible implementation to force it to use the Huawei browser for authentication. Will have to live with it for now.
3. It does. Single tap to "pause" and you can save the shot. No fancy features like the camera, but it does have selection of borders. Not my thing. I just stick with borderless.
4. I guess that's a workaround that'll have to work.
Thanks for all the help so far.

Good to hear this! I looked into this a little yesterday but can't do it on the computer I'm on because I don't have admin access.
Also good to know that it won't bugger anything else.
Once I'm done transferring all the data, I'll look into tidying up the apps and this will be one of those I'll do first.
I'll also need to look into whether I still require Es file explorer or whether the huawei privatespace and safe functions are good enough to lock away folders, files from prying eyes.

IMHO, i find Huawei's private space and safe to be better than other third party apps out there but obviously it's not up to par with Samsung KNOX yet. Hye, you can't win them all eh
