Fingerprint scanner constantly fails the first try - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So this thing wont work at first, everytime I unlock my phone (with the home button) I just keep my finger on there, and 95% of the time it will tell me "no match". The funny thing is, as soon as I lift my finger and put it back down (even if I put it back EXACTLY the same it was) it will unlock instantaneously. Why would this happen? It's not a recognition malfunction, it has to be somethign with the software. anybody else has this happen?

P10 Lite attemps to unlock itself in the pocket. Waiting period for the next attemp.

Guys I have a serious problem w my P10 Lite. I'm using the fingerprint scanner for locking/unlocking my device and it has been great or those few days that I have the phone, but there is a problem. It happend to me twice now: I'm taking out my phone from my pocket and I'm unable to unlock the phone due to "to many attemps of unlocking the phone" and I have wait 10 minutes (seriously?!) to try again...I dont get it, how is it possible ? My thigh skin "attepms" to unlock my phone thorough my trousers?
How can I at least disable this "to many attemps" feature?
I face this problem before and this is my highly suspected findings, correct me if I am wrong.
You must have turned on the "notifications turn on screen" under settings -> notification & status bar. Therefore, when there is a new notification came in, your screen is on while the phone is in your pocket. The finger print scanner is activated. While you were walking, the phone (finger print scanner) was rubbing the clothes and it thought you are attempting to scan a "finger print" but of course not, that's why it was an "attempt" and failed. After don't know failed for how many times, it will only allow you to unlock again after 10 mins.
What I do now is, i turn off the "notifications turn on screen" feature. If you still want this feature turned on, when you put the phone in your pocket, maybe let the screen face out, not facing your leg. Maybe another way is to use a flip cover? As long as don't let the finger print scanner touches any where while the screen is turned on by new notifications.
ok, this is wierd, I do not see this setting anywhere. but when I type it in the search bar it shows up under "notification & status bar"

Unresponsive fingerprint sensor

Hey guys,
Recently, I've been having issues with my fingerprint sensor/unlock screen. Sometimes when I pull my phone out of my pocket and attempt to unlock the phone witht he fingerprint sensor, it won't respond. I then press the power button, which turns the screen on and when I use the fingerprint sensor, i can feel the vibration from the button but the screen does not unlock. There is also no fingerprint icon at the bottom. I can't unlock by swiping and putting in my password either. This eventually fixes itself after 30-45 seconds, but its really annoying when I want to use my phone. I've tried switching launchers, thinking that this might have been the problem, but this did not fix it.
I'm running stock OxygenOS 4.1.6, kernel [email protected] #1. I'm using the google launcher currently.
Its something to do with the light sensor cause i have it happen at night time when i am listening to podcasts in bed, it comes up to press one of the volume buttons and back to bypass it - but after 10 seconds it lets you unlock it anyway?
Pocket mode, try turning that off. Pocket mode uses the proximity sensor (I think) to detect whether it's in a pocket or not. If it is, then the fingerprint scanner will refuse to work so as to prevent accidental touches in the pocket
Turned it off last night. It's still happening. And it happens even when the phone is sitting on my desk. I go to try and unlock it and it won't respond.3
Delete and reset them. I find it happens after a month or so of use. I'm on Sultans marshmallow.
Originally when it happened I thought the ROM had gone bonkers and flashed back to stock. I missed the battery life too much on the CM13 build so I tried his marshmallow again. And guess what? It happed again. So I just deleted them and reset my fingerprints and voila! Snappy again.
Let me know if it works for you!
Just delete your current fingerprints and reset them. Should become snappy once again.
Happened to one of my friends and that's how I fixed it for him.
Cheers.
Never had issues with. Maybe you use it wrong side of finger, i mean you must unlock with you finger horizontally and not vertically finger

My phone has started acting wonky, not only with the finger print sensor but sometimes the touchscreen will become unresponsive, but I'll be able to turn the screen on or off. I'll have to try resetting tonight.

P10 how disable wake-up by home button

How to disable the home button when the screen is locked? The screen now activates when you touch the home button (finger reader) - later phone can be unlock by PIN or finger, but how to disable screen wake up by this butto?. I would like to block this possibility so that the screen wakes up only by pressing the on / off button.
Your P10 does this?
I tried it on my P10 a second ago. My phone only vibrates when I tap the homebutton with a finger or part of my skin which isn't getting recognized by the phone. But the screen stays of.
Which version are you on? I'm on VTR-L29C432B162
i have VTR-L29C432B151, and a wanne disable it, because it is very annoying.
Dude, you really don't understand how fingerprint scanner with its features works...
Workaround: just don't tap on that area

When you deactivate the fingerprint reader to unlock your device(settings/fingerprint/screen unlock), then when you tap on the reader, when the device is locked, the screen turns on.
I personally use fingerprint to unlock my device, but have another complain and that is, when i want to check my lock screen for missed calls/recieved messages i have to take the device to my hand and push the on/off button.
would be great to have double tap to wake function.

You misunderstand. I'm having this same grievance as it's so easy to knock the scanner when moving the phone that the next movement then swipes to unlock it and the next thing you know you're opening apps and tapping stuff.
I don't give two hoots about fingerprint scanners as they are inherently insecure so I will never use mine. I'd like the ability to disable it completely so it doesn't even act as a button.

You're using a password that you carry on your person at all times, is always visible, and can't be changed. If someone steals your phone they just need to grab your hand and put it on the reader to have full access.

Do you really think that someone would steal your phone and your hand just to unlock your device? Ok maybe if you are a bilionaire or presdent of the united states...
The same i can say about unlock pins or gestures ..they need just to put you under drugs and you will tell them the code.
Same as with iris scanner, they just need your phone and your eye .
Too paranoic in my opinion. There is way higher probability that you would die in car accident or airplane accident than someone stelas your phone and your hand . 99% of stolen phones are stolen beacuse of value of the device, not because someone would spend hours to get into your device.
But anyway it is your opinion ...

Indeed.
So, getting back on track, does anyone know a way to disable the fingerprint reader in its entirety? I suspect this may only be possible with a custom-ROM or at the very least root access.
Besides it makes no sense, I think there is no oficial way to completly deactivate the fingerprint reader.

Fingerprint sensor issue

If my phone is sitting on the desk and I pick it up to unlock, the fingerprint sensor will only detect my finger on the second press. Once I've got it in my hand and lock it, it will unlock every time. But if I put it back down and pick it up, it will only work on the second press. It happens every time.
Anyone else found this?
I tested few times but I couldn't reproduce your finding.
Maybe you have activated some of the movement control settings, on my phone I don't have any.

I haven't enabled anything as far as I know. I turn most things off I don't need, especially gesture related as I never use any of it. Perhaps it's faulty somehow. I guess now's a good time to get it replaced due to the hulkified display.

Touch just stopped working any way to backup phone with unresponsive touch feedback?

So I was just using the phone without issue yesterday evening. Then it just stopped responding and was sitting on my home screen. Thought it was locked then a phone call came it. Obviously not locked. Then it chimed an email came in. Again obviously not locked. Rebooted the phone to obviously the pin screen due to restart. No ability to touch any numbers. Don't feel the vibration of touching the screen either. Display is fine, not dropped, phone calls will pop up on the screen but no way to do anything.
I obviously need to replace the screen with touch digitizer I guess. How much fun that's going to be to find when every result under the sun comes up because of all the Mi Mix versions.
Is there a windows app that can backup the phone without unlocking it or imputing anything into the phone? Or am I screwed? Was going to try factory reset as a last resort before attempting to find a new screen for it. But really want to back it up first if it's possible.
