When you root the S6 edge (any variant) PingPongRoot prevents OTA updates from installing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s6-edge/general/of1-odin-g925v-tars-t3191419
Here is a link to the proper files to update to 5.1.1; just be aware it makes root impossible.

It all depends. I would recomend that before you take the update and permanently lose root, try installing a custom ROM.
There are a variety of custom ROMs available for the Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge. They all outperform the 5.1.1 build.
Try finding one in the following subforum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s6-edge/development
If one of these ROMs does not perform as well as you expect, just use Odin to install the official firmware.

[Q] Not up to date with S5 at all. Update to Lollipop and keep root?

My girlfriend has an AT&T Galaxy S5. She's on Android version 4.4.2 (baseband version G900AUCU2AND3, build number KOT49H.G900AUCU2AND3). She's rooted with towelroot.
She's very keen on updating to Lollipop. The reason for this is that she's a very avid photographer and takes many shots on her phone. She is REALLY interested in trying out the RAW image processing.
I'd just like to know if she can update and keep root. So if anyone could help me out here or point me in the right direction since I don't know my way around this forum, that would be fantastic. Thank you very much.
Once we get a leak or the actual release, we won't know what Lollipop will have in store for the Dev's root wise. Everything now is speculative though the International version(G900F) has had good success with root and Lollipop.

I'm sorry, I just saw something after a quick Google that led to believe there *was* a release. So you're saying as of now, there's no Lollipop on G900, root or not?

The g900f, which is the over seas version, has had a limited release with lollipop. AT&T version, G900A, does not have lollipop yet.

No AT&T release as of yet, and even when (IF) it does drop and IF root is obtainable it is a longshot whether or not we will have SafeStrap or any other type of custom recovery

Galaxy S6 Edge 925A 5.1.1 Root/Downgrade/TWRP Questions

I purchased a S6 Edge and it was updated to 5.1.1 when I got it. I am a big fan of rooting/flashing ROMS/mods (My last phone was an extremely modded Oneplus One which met an untimely end) but I am not really sure how to do that on this phone. I would very much appreciate any help with info on how to root/install TWRP. Additionally I know that the S6 on 5.0.2 can be rooted but I also heard that once you update to 5.1.1 can't downgrade but it's worth a shot. I also heard that the [email protected] version has a locked boot loader is there any way to unlock it? If not would flashing say a T-Mobile stock ROM work? Thank you for any help. I also know that Devs don't like being asked for ETAs so instead I will ask if anyone knows how development of Cyenogenmod for the S6 Edge is progressing?
There's no way to unlock the bootloader on the AT&T version of the phone. You won't be able to use a custom recovery such as TWRP.
This is also my first Samsung phone (I've always used HTC devices, which were so easy to unlock/root). Since you're on 5.1.1, I don't think there's any way to achieve root (yet). I may be wrong there, though.
There is no way to root, if you want to do fun stuff with your phone, stay away from at&t

Hi, I'm also in the same boat. I know that this thread is old but I am planning to buy the s6 edge with AT&T (used). The phone is currently running on 5.1.1, (OJ9).
Before buying, is there any possible root YET? Am I possible to downgrade? I am sure these questions have been answered multiple times, but like I said, the threads that I have found via XDA are old. So before purchasing, I'd just like to make sure. Thank you so much!!

No and no , the only hope we have is when we get android 6 and wait for any possible new root method.

Status of root on a new GS6?

Hello,
I'm about to get a new work phone - My employer uses AT&T in the US and asked me which phone I want. I'd like to get a GS6 or GS6 edge+ but wanted to check the status of root, since having it is pretty important to me. I know pingpong root was working for a while but that doesn't seem to be the case any more? From the looks of the forums, it looks like root may not be available on the newer versions.
I'm going to have a look at the AT&T store tomorrow. What do I need to look for to determine if it's currently root-able? Am I looking for a specific revision of the phone itself, or only a certain Android software version?
Thanks.

Right now as it stands it looks like rooting the S6 AT&T variants that took the 5.1.1 updates won't be getting root for a long while. I would pick the LG V10 or a S6 edge+ if you had the choice to pick up an AT&T phone. If you don't care too much about specs AT&T also carries the HTC One A9 which you can unlock bootloader quickly and root. I am using the stock S6 right now and I just disabled a bunch of apps and use greenify and it works fine for the time. I miss having V4A and also titanium backup pro.
I heard chainfire released some CF-Auto root files for 5.1.1, not sure if they work with the AT&T variant, and I heard it is as simple as flashing in Odin, getting a bootloop, wiping cache and rebooting.

Interesting. If this isn't a direct means to get us root, then I don't know what is. Now we just need to find a developer or skilled person that could exploit this for our variant...

Root for s5 g900a questions

I am new to rooting and have no idea about it.
I have a galaxy s5 at&t 5.1.1 lollipop, and im trying to figure out if there is rooting for it. I tried kingroot and it some days there will be a strategy and some days there isnt.
I found out about systemless root and i have no idea if it works with my version, and i went into recovery mode or whatever its called and i had no idea what to do there....if there is a root or anything out there or lead me to the right direction that would be great thanks.
As far as I have found there is no root or downgrade available for the at&t variant of the s5 (g900a) running 5.1 plenty of us are waiting to update to it, and even more are in your position being stuck there.
Is it worth it to get a new s5 running 4.4.4 ?
Asking opinions here of the group. I can buy a mint condition g900a that still has kitkat 4.4.4 on it so I assume it can still be rooted. Is this worth buying or not?

It can still be rooted.
Correct, however if you can find a g900t in the same range piecewise it would be a better investment

Are people working on cracking the AT&T G870A or is it a lost cause?

Are people still working on cracking the AT&T G870A or is it a lost cause?
If yes, how's it going?
I had a G870F but sent it swimming on 20m deep for three weeks. Needless to say it didn't survive.
Found the G870A and thought it was a bargain, however . . .
Pretty much a lost cause, most devs have moved on.
So the answer is not so straight forward. The current v 5.1 and above for the AT&T phones are not currently rootable. If you find a used or remanufactured S5 or S5 Active with 4.2 you will be in luck. I just had a problem with my Active found a replacement on the most popular buying and selling web site for around $230. Just make sure it has not been updated. If the seller is advertising it as 4.2 and you get it with 5.0 they must take it back if it's not what was advertised. Hope this helps.
If you want an S5 to tinker with you should get a tmobile variant the SM-G900T, or the international SM-G900M since the active model is basically a carrier exclusive they dont have any international ones that im aware of.
I dont understand the question of OP
I used a popular search and found rooted firmwares for the 870A.
Several people who replied have in their sigs that they have a rooted s5 Active..... I would think that to mean the phone has been "cracked" and isn't a lost cause.

Thanks, but I have bought the phone already. If I get another one or replace the one I have it'll probably be a European, G870F, the same modell I had before.

You could have rooted before 5.0. If you have the latest bootloader, it can't be done. That is why I suggested getting one that has pre 5.0 stock 4.4.2.

so its isn't the android version per say bu the bootloader that comes with it?
So one couldn't just flash a 5.0 firmware, is that what you're also saying?
pardon my ignorance, but when one flashes a firmware -- that wont impact the bootloader will it...
poop... i just got one of those and I'm all excited to get the att crap off there and see how much faster it gets... not to mention all the other things you can't run without root.... this ebay "deal" keeps getting worse....

When you update the firmware, it automatically updates the bootloader. Once that bootloader has been updated, it's locked down. No downgrading firmwares, rooting, or installing custom recoveries.

Yeah, that's basically what I gathered after a lot of research online.
Some claim it can be done but when trying the method/software, it doesn't work.
I just wanted to double check since there is a lot of expert knowledge in this forum.
One thing i've been thinking though (not that I can do it): how about picking the phone apart
and wiping/replacing the bootloader manually?

Well it's soldered to the board. You would need some highly specialized equipment to do it. Even then I'm not sure.

Is this the case with both the G900A and the G870A. I'm in the market for either one since they are going for just of $200 new on Ebay. Are both phones now locked down of is the Active more problematic?
Both are locked down. AT&T and Samsung are being jerks to us and not even letting us have a developer phone to try to use like Verizon had.

If you are looking to root, then buy one that still has Android v4.4.2. They are available you just have to look for them. Don't put the SIM card in until you root or it will auto update and you can't go back.

Hi Sgt.CM,
I got my AT&T S5 on release day and never updated it. I have a SM-G900A with Android version 4.4.2! Is it possible for me to put CM13 with marshmallow 6.0.1 on there? I had assumed it was impossible...
Thanks,

Nope can't because of locked bootloader. The best thing you could do is too root with towelroot and then flash safestrap and install a custom rom from there.

That is what I thought. What are the custom rom options? Is there a rooted marshmallow rom for the s5 i can install?
Also according to these articles it is possible:

http://androiding.how/download-galaxy-s5-cm13-rom-marshmallow/
I'm guessing they may not be correct?
