(Xt1096) Root progress and chatter about possible 5.1.1 exploits - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If everyone could just post any root news for a new one click method for android 5.1.1 to help those of us stuck on xt1096 5.1.1 stock. Sent mine for warranty issue and came back 5.1.1. Let's just compile and bs about it here.

I did the same as you, kicking myself now... Really want root again for tether... Haven't heard much news as of lately, I do check the forums often. May have to get another phone....

Yeah, I just spent the past 3 days looking into rooting my new S6.
I got it barely a week ago and I was really excited to finally have a phone I could root, only to learn that I got the first new phone that you can't. I might have had a chance to keep 5.0.2? Whatever, but by the time I synced by Google account, I found out I had the 5.1.1 version, with no way to go back.
More experienced users, please correct me here. I am largely posting this to consolidate what I've gathered.
As I understand it, 5.1.1 prevents a clean downgrade to any other Android OS by just not allowing the option.
When I went to turn off automatic software updates, I was faced with an option to check for updates, or go "take a hike" per se. It seems like you may be able to flash a version that can be rooted for the AT&T version (G920A), but you trip the KNOX security thing which will void your warranty. From what I can see, a lot of people are just deciding to go without root, or go without the phone. I have seen a thread or 2 (out of DOZENS on this) that say methods may be in the works, but everyone seems too afraid to try anything.
Keep in mind that I say methods for a reason. Nothing seems to be cut and dry for us as AT&T users to begin with, but this 5.1.1 update when downloaded OTA and all legit and whatnot is a real death sentence for those looking to root.
I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for news, but we're going to have a while to wait before we get to join the fun.

Yep agreed and that's why I just bought a new international 6plus Edge and selling my G925A
Once you've taken the 5.1.1 OTA update on either the G925A or the G920A that's it there's no downgrading or going back.

Not sure how this can be made any more clear. We have a thorough and two very simple explanations on the entire one page of this thread so far. I'm not trying to police it, but when I get updates for the thread, I'm hoping for something a little bit beyond the already answered questions yo.
I can only imagine devs are working on a miracle of sorts to change this fact, but it remains a fact until some magic solution is both discovered AND verified as far as I'm concerned.
jinishpv, I think you mean you compiled the .img file to Windows..? If so, MagicISO is a Windows app you can use to add, delete, extract or update files contained in an .img file. I hear what all of you are saying about 5.1.1 bootloader, and yes I'm in the same boat w/ safestrap rooted still on 5.02 of4, but jinishpv asked a tangent question and I didn't think it would hurt to help a fellow xda member out.
Any updates on this besides the private root being sold all over the web for $100-$120 each or $30 -$40 for remote unlock for G920A, G925A, G928A and G890A?
The good news thatotherguy.. found a way to root s6 and s6 edge. the bad news it is unstable. He's working on it with other devs. I'm assuming he/they will release it after the release after GS7 (to check if GS7 is vulnerable too?)
My G920A is working fine so far rooted on 5.1.1 OJ7 (yes I paid $40 for remote unlock LOL).

Prove you're rooted.
And if so where did you buy a "remote unlock" to unlock the bootloader.
I can root G920A 5.1.1. I will not give away the file, but I will root it for you.

Galaxy S6 Edge 925A 5.1.1 Root/Downgrade/TWRP Questions

I purchased a S6 Edge and it was updated to 5.1.1 when I got it. I am a big fan of rooting/flashing ROMS/mods (My last phone was an extremely modded Oneplus One which met an untimely end) but I am not really sure how to do that on this phone. I would very much appreciate any help with info on how to root/install TWRP. Additionally I know that the S6 on 5.0.2 can be rooted but I also heard that once you update to 5.1.1 can't downgrade but it's worth a shot. I also heard that the [email protected] version has a locked boot loader is there any way to unlock it? If not would flashing say a T-Mobile stock ROM work? Thank you for any help. I also know that Devs don't like being asked for ETAs so instead I will ask if anyone knows how development of Cyenogenmod for the S6 Edge is progressing?
There's no way to unlock the bootloader on the AT&T version of the phone. You won't be able to use a custom recovery such as TWRP.
This is also my first Samsung phone (I've always used HTC devices, which were so easy to unlock/root). Since you're on 5.1.1, I don't think there's any way to achieve root (yet). I may be wrong there, though.
There is no way to root, if you want to do fun stuff with your phone, stay away from at&t

Hi, I'm also in the same boat. I know that this thread is old but I am planning to buy the s6 edge with AT&T (used). The phone is currently running on 5.1.1, (OJ9).
Before buying, is there any possible root YET? Am I possible to downgrade? I am sure these questions have been answered multiple times, but like I said, the threads that I have found via XDA are old. So before purchasing, I'd just like to make sure. Thank you so much!!

No and no , the only hope we have is when we get android 6 and wait for any possible new root method.

What is the reason we can't root xt1096 5.1 stock?

Hey there,
I am really courios why can't we root xt1096 while it is on stock 5.1
That sounds wierd to me because this is my 4th android phone already and I rooted all the priors without any problem.
I understood there was mofo and kingroot working on 5.0 , what happend with the 5.1 update?
Also, is there someone trying to make root possible for 5.1 stock?
I would like to get some answers if you guys don't mind
Thanks in advance.

The vulnerability that was used to root it in 5.0 and 4.4.4 was fixed by motorola.

If you were that concerned about root, there are options (ie: Pure Edition) that will ALWAYS have root.

Yea, but at first I didn't know that I can't root my phone. It seems to me really obvious that we can root any android phone because it is open source...
Moreover, the pure version has bigger screen than the normal xt1096 and that's the reason I didn't take pure edition.

Oh.. well, I didn't know that.
Looks like I'm screwed up because I bought the phone only 2 months ago because Motorola promises upgrades and now they just abandoned the xt1096..
Does anybody know if there is a progress trying to achieve root for 5.1 stock xt1096?
First, sorry for the double comment. Hope it's fine...
Kingroot has updated and they say they can root 5.1
I tried but with no success. Well, it failed at 23% which maybe brings hope to xt1096 users because this is the first time it lets you try to root with the app.
We currently have 832 people waiting for a root strategy but we need more people to ask them so we can be more noticable to them.
Please guys with xt1096, use kingroot and then it will fail to you. Then, choose the option that put us in the queue.
Thanks guys.
Hope soon we can get root to our abandoned phone..

I have the AT&T S5 running Lollipop.
I don't recall - but I *think* I got this device before Lollipop was released. I got the device in May'14. My research shows that Lollipop came out Nov'14.
So - if I got the device with the prior release - but it's running Lollipop now - is there a way to root it?
Thanks.

If you are on the official 5.0+ ota, through any means other than the prerooted flashfire method, there is no known way to downgrade, root, etc. If you flashed the ota for lollipop, bought your phone and it had lollipop, or took the ota, and it is an att s5 (G900A) then it is not, at the time of me posting this, possible to downgrade to KitKat or root or anything of the sort.

Does anyone have the firmware for the lollipop on s5 active?
Does anyone know if models of S5 being sold as new now are being released with lollipop or kitkat preinstalled?
Is there a way to know by serial number on the box?
The reason I am asking is I just purchased one online a few days ago on the daily steals website has it was advertised As new and unlocked. I did not realize being that I am from Canada that this was a lockdown AT&T model. It is scheduled to arrive in the next day or so and I would prefer not to open the box and affect my ability to return it without restocking fee if it already comes with lollipop on it. Hi I'm less concerned about achieving root and more concerned about having the ability to native flea tether on my plan back here in Canada.
Also if it did come with lollipop firmware preinstalled, is there a way to enable native tethering on the phone if root is not achievable?

Are people working on cracking the AT&T G870A or is it a lost cause?

Are people still working on cracking the AT&T G870A or is it a lost cause?
If yes, how's it going?
I had a G870F but sent it swimming on 20m deep for three weeks. Needless to say it didn't survive.
Found the G870A and thought it was a bargain, however . . .
Pretty much a lost cause, most devs have moved on.
So the answer is not so straight forward. The current v 5.1 and above for the AT&T phones are not currently rootable. If you find a used or remanufactured S5 or S5 Active with 4.2 you will be in luck. I just had a problem with my Active found a replacement on the most popular buying and selling web site for around $230. Just make sure it has not been updated. If the seller is advertising it as 4.2 and you get it with 5.0 they must take it back if it's not what was advertised. Hope this helps.
If you want an S5 to tinker with you should get a tmobile variant the SM-G900T, or the international SM-G900M since the active model is basically a carrier exclusive they dont have any international ones that im aware of.
I dont understand the question of OP
I used a popular search and found rooted firmwares for the 870A.
Several people who replied have in their sigs that they have a rooted s5 Active..... I would think that to mean the phone has been "cracked" and isn't a lost cause.

When you update the firmware, it automatically updates the bootloader. Once that bootloader has been updated, it's locked down. No downgrading firmwares, rooting, or installing custom recoveries.

Yeah, that's basically what I gathered after a lot of research online.
Some claim it can be done but when trying the method/software, it doesn't work.
I just wanted to double check since there is a lot of expert knowledge in this forum.
One thing i've been thinking though (not that I can do it): how about picking the phone apart
and wiping/replacing the bootloader manually?

Both are locked down. AT&T and Samsung are being jerks to us and not even letting us have a developer phone to try to use like Verizon had.

Nope can't because of locked bootloader. The best thing you could do is too root with towelroot and then flash safestrap and install a custom rom from there.

That is what I thought. What are the custom rom options? Is there a rooted marshmallow rom for the s5 i can install?
Also according to these articles it is possible:

I'm guessing they may not be correct?
