i was happy when i ordered my nc with the $50 coupon. i got my nc on friday and quickly unboxed it to charge. since then i've been getting more and more frustrated.
1) my nook color won't stay connected to my wifi. this is true even when next to the router. i have a couple laptops that have no issue, so i'm thinking it's the nook.
2) my touchscreen is unresponsive at times. Many times i try and tap on a button it doesn't do anything. i've used other nooks and this is not the case. i think mine is a dud.
so i call my local B&N to see what they can do. They say, no problem, bring it in! So i hop in my car and head over to the store.
I brought everything from the nook box, the shipping box, the packing slip, etc. After a bit of looking at the packign slip I was told that is was an "eBay purchase" and i'd have to handle it through eBay only. I asked to speak to the store manager, thinking maybe they were confused or something. The item was purchased on eBay but the seller was B&N.
They told me that eBay had purchased the nook and sold it to me, so i'd have to go to eBay to get any resolution. If you look at the packing slip it actually says sold to eBay, shipped to me. What is even more fun is that the serial number on the packing slip does not match the one on the nook! They said they have no way of tracking who got which one through the eBay promotion (not sure how that will shake out for warranty purposes).
I called another B&N in my area and got the same story. Aparenly corporate sent an email to all the stores warning them to not handle anything with the nooks that were purchased through eBay during this promotion.
I'm going through the process to get it returned to "eBay" meaning that i messaged B&N on eBay to get a return. Just wanted to warn people in case they have any troubles that the store will not assist. Any warranty may or may not be handled by B&N.... not really sure, but i don't plan on getting another one after this. The listing says they will respond monday-friday, so i have to see how it all shakes out then.
Anyway, just wanted people to know in case you have issues, the store may or may not help. None of them in my area will. I wanted to either return or exchange for another one. No dice. They said they'd handle it for warranty purposes, but to test I said "fine, service it for warranty then". they said i'd have to contact eBay.
That's unfortunate that you got a bad unit. My 199 Ebay NC has been working flawlessly. Just waiting on the MicroSD card to arrive so I can root mine.
Hope you get a satisfactory resolution soon!
It was stated on the purchase page. You should have read it ahead of time.
I returned my store bought NC today and have been using the ebay one all day. Works exactly the same. No issues. Before its rooted it does disconnect from wifi whe the screen shuts off. Pretty sure it's designed that way.
I confess to being surprised by this to a *point*. I didn't read those particulars on line but assumed B&N were the people I'd deal with even if not through the local store. Kind of odd that payment had to go through paypal - some other motivation at work there I'd imagine.
My packing slip does show sold to E-bay and shipped to me. But it also says in the top right corner "If you are not satisfied with your order you may return it within 14 days of the delivery date. For your convenience call 1-800-THE-BOOK for return authorization or return to your local B&N store with this receipt (check the local store refund policy for details)."
I'd try calling the 1800 number first and getting some info. It is *possible* that not all stores enforce the policy you describe. Hopefully the 800 number will get you a prompt solution. I - of course - voided my warrantee about 10 minutes after I got it out of the box but performance has been fine on the experimental froyo build.
Peter
Your local B&N store manager is a ****. If you want to push the matter with them, print out the policy online and show it to him, but he's already made up his mind - don't expect a piece of paper to change it. That's just how retail is - underpaid, overworked, and customers are the lowest form of life on the planet.
Try a different store, and be nice.
wifi connects fine, but disconnects while using...
Hi every one,
I also bought my NC from ebay. Funny thing about the WiFi. it connects to the internet if i am outside of my house (B&N, Starbucks etc). At home, i have a buffalo wirless router, with SSID hiden, mac filter and WPA/WPA2 mixed mode. Apparently it will not work in these setting. Need to broadcast your SSID, change from WPA/WPA2 mixed to WPA2-PSK mode. then finally it worked.
I have read quite a bit about this wifi issue all over other forums as well. There was even a person talking about changing the router seting from 11/n to 11 b/g and limiting the speed to 54 mbps rather than at 300.
About the Tech Support:
They are the most useless idiotic tech support ever. Instead of listening to what my problem is and attempting to trouble shoot they were following their protocol. That is typing the question in their database. i am surprised their database does not have a soultion to this problem. As this problem is reported all over the internet. And the product is in the market for almost 4 months. The rep first asked me to restart the NC, still no luck then restart the router still no luck. i finally hung the phone.
I got mine yesterday as well. I woke up this morning only to find "phantom touch" issue occurring when I tried to play around with it. It would not respond to any of my touches but decided to do things its own. I called the B&N support and they girl who answered said I have two options, give them my creditcard info and they'll send me another one before I ship back mine or I can send mine in and wait for them to send another. I asked if I could walk into a store to get it exchanged as it is more convenient, she said it is totally up to the store manager's discretion, however she said she'll help me leave a note on my account so I can reference that in the store.
I might head to a store tomorrow and see what happens.

If you are using a Buffalo router I assume it is using DD-WRT as its firmware. There has been a pretty widespread issue with NOOKcolors staying connected to routers running DD-WRT.
Hey the receipt says you can take it back to the store. Its from BN although it says it was sold to Ebay and shipped to me. whats the diff who it was sold to? They should honour the return policy in the store. I am happy with my unit but am going to the store to make sure there is nothing different from buying the unit from BN directly. Either ways I think the discount was specifically in place on ebay to discourage returns.

I have same issue, the wifi is not connected in public area, but it works fine at my home router ...
Any known fix for it ?
Interesting...
Well... I'm looking at my "receipt" (their word on the paper)...
The word "eBay" is nowhere on my "receipt". No parties other than Barnes and Noble and myself are listed on the receipt. However...
There are three text blocks under the "Barnes & Noble" header.
Block one:
"Sold To:
2145 HAMILTON AVENUE
SAN JOSE, CA 95125
UNITED STATES"
Yes, my receipt really does say the Nook was sold to a street address!
I'll guess that may be eBay's address in the first block but I don't know.
The text on the right side of the receipt does state the Nook can be returned within 14 days of the delivery date by calling 1-800-THE-BOOK for an RMA "or return to your local Barnes & Noble store with this receipt"
My eBay invoice page says the seller is "BarnesandNobleInc". The actual detail page for the eBay listing says the "coupon" for $50 off is from eBay. Nowhere on the page does it say the Nook is being purchased from eBay instead of B&N. Also of interest - the terms of the auction state the seller will accept returns within 14 days. The sales contract (the eBay listing) sets no restrictions on what returns will be accepted. (We'll come back to this point in a second.)
I checked the eBay seller link for BarnesandNobleInc -- it goes to the Barnes and Noble eBay store, run by Barnes & Noble.
There IS a note on the 'Returns' page of the Barnes & Noble eBay store:
"Returning NOOK
14 day returns on defective devices with receipt through the Barnes & Noble call center. Returns will not be accepted at retail locations. To request a return, please send us a message through eBay. We will respond to your request between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST Monday through Friday."
Remember the eBay listing (a contract between buyer and seller) says there is a 14 day return policy and provides no restrictions. The sales receipt also states "if you are not satisfied with your order, you may return it within 14 days of the delivery date" by RMA "or return to your local Barnes & Noble store with this receipt".
"if you are not satisfied" is not equivalent to "14 day returns on defective devices". 14 day returns on "defective devices" is the sort of guarantee a person may give on something refurbished (or that the seller knows is likely to be defective.)
The "NookColor User Guide", included on my Nook states, "Your NOOKcolor is backed by a one year manufacturer's warranty against defects in materials and workmanship." So B&N better plan to accept returns on defective devices for one year.
I am not a lawyer but I question Barnes & Noble's ability to revise the purchase agreement or terms of the warranty after the fact. (I should ask my cousin - he is a lawyer.)
That being said, unless my Nook suddenly breaks I'll be happily keeping it. I will however expect B&N to honor their promises and warranties in the event the Nook should break. So should y'all.
I also purchased from the barnesandnobleinc account using the coupon code. Mine has a bad pixel right in the center of the screen, so there's this tiny pale dot there no matter what is on the screen. I called the tech support number from the ebay listing, and spoke with a lady who had me power off and look at the screen in the light to be sure it wasn't an external scratch or pit. They took my credit card # and e-mailed an RMA numbers, shipping label, etc, before the phone call was even over. So I keep using it until the replacement arrives, and put it in the box and send it back pre-paid.
While I was disappointed by the bad pixel, I was very pleased with customer service. They took time to explain how to dissociate my account from it before returning, reminded me to back up any media files, etc. I had already assumed that returning an item purchased through ebay to a local store wouldn't go over well, but even after I began the phone call with "I bought an NC through B&N corporate ebay," they just looked up my Nook account, took the serial code, saw it was new, and were cooperative.
I hope that your problem gets solved. Perhaps take a deep breath and call the official tech support back?

you can check for a router firmware update that will fix this bug but other than that there isnt a work around
For those with wifi problems, it was a known problem that was fixed in firmware 1.1, so just download and install firmware 1.1 from B&N - you will see it in the release notes.
To Tekowalsky: thanks for doing a research and I would be interested to hear for your cousin's opinion.
IMO, the paper invoice included in the package beats any other 'provisions' they state at the Ebay listing. The contract of purchase was between us and the Barnes and Noble, not us and Ebay. I have looked closely at the EBay listing and never did it say Ebay is the seller except for the coupon that they provided. Barnes and Noble, of course, is entitled to have different return policy for it's web Ebay store operations but if they included paper invoice stating that the retail store should accept returns, they should honor it.

orly.. I think it's the opposite, DD-WRT works great with every device I've ever put on mine.
And besides, why would you assume Buffalo = DDWRT?

thoughts?
"This deal is all about the device," said Sherif Mityas, a partner in the retail practice of global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney. "As Apple proved, you need to have the content and the device. Malone has the content, and Barnes & Noble has the device. You're not buying the stores; you're buying the Nook."
These are my thoughts exactly. The big question going forward is whether a pure hardware manufacturer can survive going forward, or whether you're going to have to offer a device as well as its content, following the path trailer by Apple (and which Amazon appears to be gearing up to follow also).
I can see it now... Malone's / Barnes & Noble / CyanogenMod
CyanogenMod's IPO in 6 months
its all in the pricing for the tablets, i mean if you can get a xoom for $250 do you really think you'll buy a nook.
7 inch xoom? 10 too big
I've noticed the same questions get asked over and over again, so I thought a main post with the answers to the most common questions would be helpful.
1. Should I buy the Nexus 7?
Hell to the yes.
2. Will I still get the $25 credit if I didn't order from the Play Store?
Yes, you will. It is not dependent on what store you ordered it from. The first account that is logged in to the Nexus will be credited the money. I cannot confirm how long this promotion will last, or whether or not it will only be given to people who preordered.
3. When will I receive my Nexus 7?
GameStop has officially released the Nexus 7 to those who preordered with them. Google Play orders also started shipping as of July 13th. Ebuyer shipments have been released as well in the UK.
4. Does the Nexus 7 support MHL?
No, as confirmed by Engadget.
5. Does the Nexus 7 support USB-OTG?
Yes, but unfortunately mounting USB storage natively is not supported. However, it is possible with a root. It does support USB-to-Ethernet and most keyboards/mice will work.
6. Are there any serious problems/defects with the Nexus 7?
Members have confirmed that some Nexus' have a flickering problem, especially when using Chrome, or with a white/gray color on the screen. Also, as confirmed by Android Police, there is a problem with ghosting, or image retention, but some have suggested that this is normal behavior for an IPS display. However, Google and Asus have not been able to recreate these issues independently, which suggests that these issues may only affect pre-production units from Google I/O and review units.
7. Does the Nexus 7's home screen rotate? Does the Nexus 7 have Tablet UI?
No, the home screen on the Nexus 7 does not natively rotate to landscape orientation as on past tablets with Honeycomb and ICS. It uses the more traditional Phone UI, with the pull-down notification tray. However, members have confirmed that with a root it is possible to change the DPI to 170 or 160, which allows the homescreen to rotate into landscape orientation, and also brings on a more Hybrid UI, which allows some elements of the UI run in tablet mode, but not all. (Thanks to nerfman100 for clarification)
8. Does the Nexus 7/Jelly Bean/Chrome support Flash?
Officially, Jelly Bean is not a supported OS by Adobe, and Flash will be taken off of the Play Store on August 15th. This in turn means that the Nexus 7 is not does not officially support Flash. However, many members have confirmed that Flash does work fine when installed on the Nexus 7, but bugs will be expected. Chrome, the default browser, does not support Flash.
9. Can I still cancel my preorder of the Nexus 7?
If you ordered from the Play Store, Google has confirmed that it is too late in the process for most to cancel the order, and will have to reject the package on arrival if they want a refund. It has been suggested that this is only for people who ordered prior to July 1st, but this cannot be confirmed. Most other retailers are allowing cancellations at this point.
10. Are there any good deals on the Nexus 7?
Some online, out of state retailers such as B&H and J&R are selling the Nexus 7 with little to no shipping and no tax. Your order can also be combined with coupons for these companies. If you would like to save on shipping and be able to turn in old games and electronics for credit, ordering from a local GameStop is recommended.
11. Can I buy the 8GB version anywhere other than the Play Store?
No, the 8GB Nexus 7 is a Play Store exclusive.
All of the answers are based on my own research and observations. If there is anything incorrect, missing, or something that should be added, please let me know!
This is a great idea. I knew most of this stuff but it is great info. Well done.

No, the home screen on the Nexus 7 does not natively rotate, it is always in portrait orientation. This also means that there is no Tablet UI in Jelly Bean itself.

Please change this to mention the Hybrid UI. You see, certain elements of the UI run in tablet mode, but not all. And saying that the portrait-only launcher is the cause of the phone UI doesn't make much sense. It would be wise to rephrase that. :good:

It could possibly be different in the UK, but I have contacted GameStop, B&H and J&R about it, and they have all said that they are offering the same incentives as the Play Store. An official Google confirmation would be nice though.
If you want to know how Hybrid UI works, this G+ post by Dianne Hackborn is a very good read.

Linking in from fatwallet to macmall gave me 2.5% cash back and my cc gave me 1% so, ordering it from macmall got it for 240.29 after all is said and done with no tax and free shipping. Some people seem to be reporting that the screen is popping out of the bezel, which seems a bit worrying and is putting me off slightly until I can get clarification. Comments spread across this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770919
When you set up the Nexus ( I bought it from Staples), it tells you that you get a $25 credit if you activate Wallet with a credit card, but having done so, I don't see the credit anywhere in Play...where do you look to find it?
I just went to exchange my daughters nexus 7 she received for Christmas at Staples and was told they don't have any replacements and won't be getting the 16GB version anymore as they have been discontinued Every Staples in my area (boston) is sold out, even though the Staples website shows them in stock. The 32GB is still available everywhere.
I then went to Walmart.com and their website states "Dear Customer, we are out of the Google Nexus 16GB Tablet, and will not be receiving any more. You can look at and purchase the 32GB version by CLICKING HERE."
Google play store shows them "Sold Out".
Does anyone know if the 16GB is discontinued? Does this mean we can expect to see the 32GB version discounted soon?

I noticed this today too! Went out looking for a 16gb model to replace a kindle fire HD I purchased my mom for Xmas (didn't like it). Couldn't find one anywhere locally or online! Well I take that back, my local MicroCenter only had the 16gb models in stock but they had the nerve to have them priced at $249 lol. When I asked the sales guy why they were priced so high he tried to get over on me by saying that's the correct price and the $50 price cut is down from $299. I just laughed and replied "I see why your the only place that still has the 16gb models in stock" and walked away. Ended up buying a 32gb model at Sears and used my $28 worth of reward points towards the purchase. I think Google is looking to sell only the 32gb models...

When the Nexus 7 was released this past summer, only the 8GB was available directly from Google. The 16GB was the only model sold in stores. Now that there is no 8 GB model and the price was lowered on the 16 GB, the 32 GB is the only version available via anywhere other than Google.
Just about every retailer is stating that they are no longer carrying the product or it has been discontinued. I called google customer service and they told me that they have no knowledge of it being discontinued and suggested I keep checking the website for updates. They couldn't tell me if they would be restocking, just that there is no official statement on product being discontinued. Would be nice if someone said something official one way or the other.
I bought two 16GB versions for Christmas, one worked fine while the other wouldn't charge. I returned the defective unit thinking I would be able to get a replacement. Silly me. Now if I buy two different memory versions, my 5 year old son who doesn't understand the situation will be unhappy if his sister gets one with more memory. Yes, at 5 he can tell the difference. Meanwhile my 7 year old daughter is still without her Christmas gift while Mom and Dad go crazy trying to locate one.

Staples and Sears - every store that shows units in stock, doesn't have a single unit for resale. Either the units in stock are customer returns which are not available for sale or they are falsely being reported as stocked.
Office Depot, OfficeMax, Gamestop, Microcenter, RadioShack: every store near me is sold out.

Below is what the retailers are stating:

If they're sold out, they're sold out. A lot of us have kids and there is no physical difference in the two and there's no way he would know the difference.
They're identical looking machines.

Good one retard
My kid has had a tablet since he was 3. He's 6 now. He's on his now looking at wallpapers.
I wouldn't jump to conclusions. Christmas just ended and stock has yet to be replenished. Although I would imagine the 32gb taking over the norm.
There is no way to tell them apart. The box is even the same. No way to tell except going into settings and viewing storage.
If you WANTED to fix it... do a nandroid backup of the 16gb and restore it on the 32gb. Then it will read as 16gb. You can flash back to the original stock Rom (which will properly reformat it) to regain the lost 16gb.

When I went in to best buy looking for a nexus 7 I couldn't find one. I asked the lady where the nexus 7 was. She said sadly best buy and Google couldn't come to an agreement so they passed on carrying it. I looked at her and said they wouldn't let y'all price gouge huh? She looked at me funny and walked away.
Maybe its a sign that Google is about to release a 64 gig version or one with an SD slot?

If a fruit company can have 64GB, then why a green robot can't? also reminds me about GNEX, that Google could not fit 32GB in GSM variant as it was to thin, who know how it's now, but N7 has more room, not about for 3G variant.
A few places do still sell the 16 GB model in India.. Online ofcourse.. But that's probably the "left-overs".. Also, there have been speculations of re-releasing the N7 tablet in India in Jan '13.. So there'd be the 16 GB model available then..
My oversea sources inside China indicated that it is basic supply & demand issues with inventory and the holidays at the factory as the warehouses are basically operating in JIT mode (Just In Time) for shipping & delivery, and, that they are simply out of stock - or, sold more 16GB models than expected. $199 USD is a very, very attractive price for this sleek quad-core model & HD screen and a great front-facing camera, etc. (minus the mSD card for extra storage - which, we are know is easily solved with OTG cable, besides - got a ton of USB thumb drive) Our 2nd. choice was a slower (dual-core) Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.0 7" with dual camera - also virtually sold out everywhere, online & at brick-n-mortar stores before X'mas.
Anyway, tracked down an open-box N7 16GB - WiFi only - in 99.98% brand new condition, full warranty last week at the 3rd. Staple stores - (had 2 of them in the back, plenty of 32GB models at $249) - manager approved a 10% discount (no official policy for giving discount as it's highly sought after) so it was $180 net + sales tax, no waiting for FedEx/UPS driver - what a bargain. That's almost 1/2 the price of the iPad mini and if you fly in "coach" on a 15 hours flight - either one is great for watching DVD's and got plenty of storage options with the USB add-on, and the micro-USB port made it super easy to power up/charge & connect with other devices without spending a small fortune on accessories again (DW has her full size iPad, LOL but I love Androids) Easily tethering nicely to VZW's hotspot on the smartphone w. unlimited 3G data plan when I'm not on a Fios connection, he he !
Still busy with unlocked, rooted stock Roms & the top custom ones floating around here - the factory rom without the bloatware is great - once I got rid of the "My Library" & "Recommended ..." pimped by Google as I don't feel like holding it up as a made-believed Kindle Fire HD, etc. that's priced higher in Staples.
Stay tuned - time to update my profile/signature as the older Viewsonic Vpad7 is going to retire soon or get eBay'd ...
Cheers & Happy New Year 2013 to all (to our "oversea" friends in the other half of the planet Earth, i.e. our uncle in "Down Under" in Aussie's) :highfive:
I bought an Amazon Fire 7 for my 80+ year old dad thinking it was like any other android pad such as those from Asus and so on, only to find it (the fire) is a conduit to the Amazon sales dept. You can't even start the thing up without an Amazon account, to their defense, you don't have to give your payment info up front, but everything else... yes. So I am returning it to Amazon, as I have had no luck other than installing the Play store, that gets a little glitchy with account issues. Every fix, or root process is for OS's lower than the 5.6.0.0 that is on this device. So does anyone have a favorite Android pad suitable for my dear old dad they could recommend? I'd really appreciate it. What about the RCA Voyager?

Tough to answer as everyone's needs differ. I could easily suggest several older Amazon devices equiped with custom ROMs which make excellent Android devices at favorable price points (banging this out on a 3rd gen HDX rocking Android 7.1 that will run circles around most contemporary phones and tablets). But that involves some work on your part with questionable benefits once all is said and done.
I have a fair bit of experience with seniors and gizmos. In most cases simpler is better. Suggest a used iPad mini or (wait for it) a stock Amazon device like the Fire HD 8. While both may make YOU hold your nose pop will probably be quite happy. Good luck.
