Slow app downloads on cyanogenmod? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im on cyanogenmod 12.1 on my nexus and every once in a while the phone will refuse to download apps at more than 2-3 Kbps on LTE meaning a 50MB app takes 72 hrs (according to the play store estimates) how do i fix this? there is plenty of speed on my network for every other app to operate lightning fast...

network speed is inherently variable. at times of the day when lots of users online, itll slow down. and late at night when barely anyone is online, itll be faster. also, each tower will be different, at differing times in the day.

I know... speeds are good WHILE the play app download is being slow, ill watch the app sit at 1% @3kbps on the status bar while I download cyanogenmod update and do various other things with no issues...

[Q] Time Without Signal - Very High

I've done several searches regarding a high "Time Without Signal" percentage in battery use, but no one has mentioned it for the Revolution, and none of the tricks I've found work (airplane mode... dialing #*#* blah blah blah).
Letting the phone sit on a table overnight, I was down to 28% battery after about 7 hours. No use at all. Time Without Signal was at 99% I've seen it be at 100% before. This is all despite having a perfectly fine signal (varies between 3 and 5 bars out of 5).
The guy at the verizon store (why are they always so useless?) says he'd never seen it before, but refused to ever address it again, despite my repeated inquiries.
Has no one seen this issue? Anyone have any pointers? Help...?
Mines usually around that high too... do you have 3G/4G automatic? Mine is currently around 60% and I was in a 4G area for 3 hours earlier... could be saying the 4g has been without a signal... thinking out loud.
Sent from my VS910 4G using Tapatalk
I'm always in a 4G area, though. I very, very rarely have less than 3 bars of 4G. I guess I could try turning off LTE for a day and seeing if I get the same Time Without Signal. Though, I only got the phone for LTE, so if that's the issue, that's a real bummer.
Well, TWOS shouldn't make a big deal, just don't look at that menu a lot of phones don't report it properly just weird that it shows so high. :-\
Sent from my VS910 4G using Tapatalk
It's a big deal because my battery life is atrocious, and I think that's part of the reason.
I can't go more than 10 hours on a charge with absolutely no use.
If it helps with battery life, Im rooted, and I have setcpu with profiles setup so that while the screens off, its no higher than 368mhz but set to the conservative governor, and all other times its 122-1024mhz on interactive. this really helped battery life for me. The other 2 things Ive found is this phone uses the gps fairly arbitrarily a lot, so turning off gps when your not doing something with it helps, just as turning off background data/syncing. At least this way, without using my phone, i could squeeze 16 hours tops. Now I just have the extended battery and it works absolute wonders.

Dramatically improved battery life?

Hey guys,
I picked up my vivid about 10 days ago. Initially I had mixed feelings about the phone. I was having LTE connection issues like the majority of you are experiencing and the battery life was terrible. I had purchased a samsung galaxy S II and traded it in before my 30 days were up. Anywho, I switch my APN to HSDPA and my internet woes were fixed. I know it's not LTE, but I've been getting good download/upload speeds and everything loads consistently and quickly. Recently, I've noticed that my battery life has improved dramatically. I charge my phone every night and I usually have to charge it when I get back from work. As of recently though, I can go through the entire day and the battery will still be at 80%. I check facebook, browse sites with flash, and text frequently, and also use the maps quite a bit. I have everything but bluetooth on. Anyone else experiencing something similar?
I agree, I am not sure if this is just some net work updates that bell pushed through last week. But for sure the battery life has got better.
80% after an entire day of all that? I can only hope mine improves that much.. I've only had mine since this past Sunday, so only time will tell..

Yeah, browse while I'm on the crapper, text randomly throughout the day, I was surprised too. It also seems the connection issues have been fixed on the default APN (for now).
I'm having a horrible time with mine. I take it off charge at 7am, and by 11am it's at half. I have work email pushed to it (maybe 20 in a day?), facebook and twitter update every 30 or so mins, and I may do 2-3 txts a day. Very rarely do I ever make calls on it. I've NEVER gotten it to last past like 3pm or 4pm without plugging it in during the day. I've had it since last Friday. I'm hoping and waiting it gets better.
mine isnt like that in anyways possible. i took my phone off its charger right before i went to sleep and it had 100% life, i wake up and play a little skyrim and look at my phone and it was down to 30%... so it lost 70% in about 10hrs of not doing anything. i decided to go to walmart (which is 20mins away) and by the time i got there i had lost 10% (so now im at 20%). i do my shopping and by the time i leave, it hit 10% life and shut down notifications and what not to save battery. by the time i got home, i had 5% life.
that was the worst i have ever seen and it was like watching my truck border on the empty tank mark. i come from the iphone and i didnt have this issue... i know the screen is bigger and the notification system isnt as good as ios; but that aside, could widgets cause life to go down. i WAS using a mail, news, weather, rss, facebook, pandora, that google music thing, and a bible verse of the day. i know its a lot of widgets, but they are setup to either get info every 4hrs or every time i open them.
sorry for the gerth of that reply btw
My phone is on the way so I may be talking out of my ass when I say this but the battery drain is probably do to the LTE radio.

Well, it only has one radio and I'm not sure it would matter whether it was connected to LTE or not. What would matter is signal strength.
Ive had the phone since sunday as well and ive gotta say that compared to when my inspire was on stock, this battery is doing just fine. i get about 26 hours out of the whole thing, as i unplug it in the morning at 7 30 and put it back on the charger at anytime between 1 - 3 am and usually have anywhere from 15-30 percent left. i keep wifi on as well as mobile data and spend most of my time in areas where there is wifi access. i also have screen brightness set to auto and auto sync. i have disabled phone finder and leave wireless location services on. I have installed adw ex and use that instead of sense 3 as i found on my inspire, that sense eats battery.. fast. i live in chicago, where we do have LTE in most areas. My daily usage is as such: text and browse most of the day. 10-15 calls/day. and 2-4 hours of streaming pandora/tinyshark/google music. i peruse the market and xda quite often as well.
that all being said, im particularly happy with the stock experience and battery life. i just wish i could get rid of all the ****ing bloatware.

That's only for CDMA devices. LTE is originally GSM based technology so it doesn't need a separate antenna for GSM networks.

if you are using wifi most day and streaming pandora and other stuff, it doesn't compare to regular cell data. I stream tune in and with in two hours the battery is down 50% without wifi. The battery life bearly moves with wifi connected.
Battery has been pretty good on mine as well. I can unplug it at 630am and do my normal stuff of browsing, texting, a few conference calls and such. By 830pm I can still be around 70%. I do recall in the very beginning that it would decrease in charge rather quickly. Had only 12 hours of battery life.
I use Launcher Pro. WiFi and BT on all the time. Brightness set at Auto. I'm in an HSPA+ zone, and haven't changed the APN. Only Widgets running is calendar, contacts, YouTube and Beautiful Widgets.
I have deep cycled the battery twice already. Two in a row after I got the phone. Now I charge it at night regardless of how much is left. I usually deep cycle once a month.

Unplugged my phone at 8 AM, it's now almost 11:30 and I'm still at 100% battery. I have been using facebook, typed some emails, sent some texts, browsed a few sites. This is all with wifi off and running completely on LTE (with the default PTA APN)

[Q] Maximizing battery life

Hello guys,
Can you, people who are getting around 6h of battery life, share your tips & tricks in order to do so ?
Sharing some of the settings you did or didn't enable would be great !
Thanks
I know that Google Now and Latitude drains a lot of battery. Turn that of if you want better battery.
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
I would also suggest to turn of facebook notifications. U could decrease weather update interval from 1 hour to 2 hours and have your energy saver option always enabled. This cpu will get downclocked from 1,728 ghz to 1,134 ghz and u will notice no difference in games or anything..not even in very very demanding games, cause this cpu is extremely fast (even underclocked it is faster than one x+ cpu or galaxy s3 cpu)
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I use power saver as I don't game, and I honestly can't notice any difference apart from improved battery life.
I also turn off mobile data when I'm out of the house and not using it. Constantly syncing data, especially when you have poor signal, kills the battery.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for your input guys.
I also read somewhere that it's better to select 2G/3G network over 2G/3G/4G so I will be monitoring that.
Regarding the meteo app, I'll set it to refresh once every day, which is plenty enough. What I will not do again though is install Avast!, looks to me like the damn things tries to connect to the internet every time you unlock the screen (in order to check for updates I guess).
Google Now & Latitudes will be disabled, as I don't use them.
Keep the tips coming
Personally I find the battery to be great i leave everything on do lots of web browse YouTube games and i use it as a phone as well lol and will last me all day and some

You're very lucky. Out of the box (by that I mean I didn't change any settings) I only got 3h30 screen time (albeit most of it was 3G browsing, but still, that's pretty low compared to what others are gettings, 5 to 6h easily)

It might be because I'm on a custom rom don't know but i do leave my phone on charge for 5 hours when i get home plus I read somewhere if you run the battery down 3 times it will last a lot longer so i did
I took my phone off an overnight charge at 7 am this morning. It's now 12.35pm, 5.5 odd hours on battery and I still have 94%.
I've sent several texts, checked Facebook a few times through the course of the day.... I do have power saver on.
I don't have updates coming to my phone 24/7.
The way I like to use my phone is, I only get updates when I want them. I.e, when i turn my data connection or WiFi on.
I couldn't think of anything worse than being pestered all day from Soundcloud/ Facebook / Twitter / Google.... etc etc. Updates/notifications.
actually if you constantly turn on the screen the battery drops really fast.
I think if you're on a stable network, you should just choose the network model you use (2G or 3G only)
also, turn off auto sync and kill background programs that you no longer use should save some energy.
6 hrs is average. I unplugged the phone at around 8:00am and by noon only about 55% left. Though the screen basically never off coz I kept surfing the net and texting.

Battery life?

Hi guys, I have a question about the xperia zr, how is the battery? gsmarena posted some impressive results, but how about in real life, can if get 5-6 hours of screen-on time? my gt-i8730 can do 6 hours normally, how does this act? thanks )
Yes.. for me it lasts for a long time screen on
you may check my review on the 4.3 FW

-These tests depends on my own usage ,so it may differ depends on everyone's usage-
• Average Usage •
it lasts for 1 Day and 13 Hours with average usage
~4:30 Hrs Talk Time
~23 Hrs Wi-Fi On
~3 Hrs Screen On (Chatting ,Browsing and downloading)
• Heavy Usage •
it lasts for 10 Hours with continuous heavy usage on medium brightness with the auto enabled
~5 Hrs Screen On (Chatting and Browsing)

Yes it's very impressive!! Let's say, you can reach evening without any problems even with medium/heavy usage. With "medium/heavy" I mean if you turn on GPS for 20 minutes navigating, 24 hours of wifi/data switched on, 1 hour of browsing, and texting all the day. But the very impressive thing for me is that if you play 1 full hour with a heavy game such as riptide, the battery doesn't fall down, you will lose only a 6-8% of battery. I tested the battery with cyanogenmod 11 and stock 4.3, well, the stock firmware battery usage is better by far!!

I'm pretty sure you're guaranteed at least 6-7+ hours of general on-screen usage, assuming you don't have a thousand things forcing every CPU core to be at max load.
I bought the phone having read the gsmarena battery benchmark results for it, and I can say from experience that they don't come close (as in, worse). Same for the standby time on the phone is not what is stated by Sony/GSM but of course it's still a pretty amazing phone, for me I bought it for the supposed crazy good battery life (11:20 hours constant web browsing? I get half that) which isn't an improvement from my old phone so probably going to sell it.

I searched for your problem, here what i get :
The media server application indexes all your media on the phone.
Its common that if you transfer media files to your phone that the power consumption of the media server will go up but only for a short period of time. This is necessary, otherwise app's won't be able to find your newly imported media.
But in your case, since you seem to be having troubles with the media server app constantly consuming battery. I think that you may have a/or several corrupt media files in the phone or on your SD card. Causing the media server app to constantly trying to index files.
Just to do a quick test, try to copy all your important media and other files to your computer then delete them from your phone or do a format on your storage memories and check if you still experience this.
If you don't, the problem is as I suspected a broken or corrupt media file. The hard part is to figure out which one.
Source
And while searching i found some app that might fix your problem (it requires Root permission) , it's called Mediaserver Killer, get it on Google Play Store
i didn't test it but there is some positive feedbacks about it

Mediaserver is an apps running in background. So Check which apps you installed recently. Uninstall then.
Normally Utter, proximity sensor on/off, open mic+,. Wifi GPS seeking apps, This are just example. Find out.
I had same problem two month before. I don't remember exactly which app was causing problem but I unstalled some of them and got result.

Most of the other settings stayed at stock. The governor (interactive) was tweaked using heimdall's tweaks ( posted in z5 themes and apps section by a user, along with those power tweaks and setprop tweaks)
I felt amplify made most of the magic here. Helped a lot with wakelocks. Searched the net for guide to use amplify and it worked brilliantly. Phone was down to 50% and I had an SOT of 4.5+ hours.
Will try the new kernel and let you know in a day or two. I am pretty sure the kernel would work better if I gave it a day to settle.
For the previous kernel which I was testing, it was it's first run.

Best for me is 4:48 as reported by Battery Monitor Widget, but mostly is 3D games so I think is pretty good
I have my Phone 3 hours off Power, Battery goes down to 60% and the main app draining power is the Display with 17% as per the battery consumption chart.
In the Details to the batteryconsumption of the display it says the display was on for 1:35, however I hardly turned it on.
That is the same since LP and even with MM I reset already 3 times. no change.
I would love the meet someone with that great performance. mine seems just broken :/

Actually I hope so. I am one step away from rooting my phone and hope that this might help, especially with greenify having root access.
The device is almost unusable anymore with this battery life. I factory reset once a week, don't even have many apps or do much with it but it still lasts just half a day.
After a factory reset the first 2-3 days are almost fine up to one day.
I dont even think 2 days are possible if I don't activate the whole time...

I wonder if the lack of proper tmous radio tuning leads the phone to drain on LTE... Have noticed more drain (phone doesn't seem to have doze lines anymore even though BBS shows doze..) after rooting/xposed. So much that I uninstalled xposed as a test.

What I think was happening for me was low LTE signal was causing Yappy to wake up every minute to restart itself. Not sure why Yappy wasn't showing in battery settings, but my phone seems to be connected now that I'm on a 'stable network'. Really wish we could get the tuning on tmous :/
I'm getting average 7-9 hours SOT with my Xperia Z5 Dual E6683... btw is it normal for the GPS indicator at the battery usage page to show that it's constantly turned on throughout the whole day eventhough it's turned off?

Aaaand nope, got the fast dormancy wakelocks and battery drained faster than before. Reflashing the stock system and wiping cache now to see if I can get doze lines again.
Edit: Battery is better but I think because of things I did after reflashing. Installed WLD since I have root now and noticed that google maps (and later android pay) were generating NLP wakelocks, so cleared data on google maps since I have location reporting off already and then denied location to android pay and it seems to be back to normal. If this is stable for a few days I may try Xposed again.
On average daily use with WiFi on and location enabled most of the time I will get 5 hours SOT. I have pushed it close to 6 with reducing my brightness to almost nothing and only using the phone for messaging. Several factors will affect SOT. For me getting group messages or picture messages drops battery life. Using Chrome also drops it.

Are you asking the app usage in the day? Funny enough my battery life today was a definite miss but it got me through the workday and that's all I need.
Nah I meant like what apps do you have that are non-stock..
But looks like my phone is back to not dozing.. losing ~10% overnight, where I used to lose 3%. Looks like I'm getting the Mobile Radio Active bug displaying through google play services. Clearing caches of apps that appear to be causing it as I go...
