Hi everyone,
I have an AT&T Note 3 that I like to root, unlock the sim to use with other carriers, and flash a custom ROM.
Can you please help point me to the right threads or instructions to do this?
Thanks much!
Model - SM-N900A
Android version - 5.0
Baseband - N900AUCUEOC2
I just unlocked mine last week, just Google unlock at&t, go to their support page and follow their instructions, they sent me the code within 10 mins. Now on to the hard part, you have to decide which Rom you want run. You'll have to follow specific instructions for oc2 though, I'm on nc2 so mine is a little different. Just look at some of the different Roms and check for oc2. 2 Days ago I had 0 experience at rooting, now I'm rooted (towel root, super su), safe strapped, and trying to download a custom Rom now but keep getting download failed mssg. But just read about the Roms and you'll find the instructions for oc2. Good luck and post up your results.
Thanks.
From what I have read so far, I need to downgrade the OC2 to NC2 before I can root or flash custom ROM.
That's what I thought I had read once you do that is a cake walk. At least it was for me, I downloaded towel root, chain fire superuser su, ran towel, it was successful, then su, it was stuck removing knox so after about 10 min I re-booted then went into su again it brought up Knox removal again, I allowed it this time it was successful, downloaded busy box, and safe strap 3.75, (make sure you open and install busy box)then run safe strap, if it works do a back up. Then find the Rom you want, but I would try to find a Rom first in case it needs something different, so you don't waste time, I'm trying fire kat, just keep getting download failed message, hopefully I'll find the cure soon and then I'll post it up. Good luck again.
Yeah...choosing a ROM could be challenging.
Basically, I just want something that's as close to stock as possible BUT without all the bloatware and stuff. I am not much with customizing things.
Just give me something that runs smoothly and with minimal garbage.
Is that a ROM for that?
I have te same problems, Im Italian and i have NOTE 3 AT&T, Safestrap give me error : E: unable to wipe, unable to mount, why?
I have read a tutorial and i do it, now i have NC2 whit Root, busybox and safestrap.
Anyone can help me?

**Make certain that your reactivation lock in security settings is off before beginning this process**
1. Take the NG3 OTA update.
2. Download and install Towelroot-v3.apk(this version does not require internet access).
3. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the Home, Volume Down, and Power keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press Volume Up key) and flash the G870A_NE4_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
4. Open the Towelroot app from your app drawer and press "Make it Rain" to root your device.
5. Power off then boot into "Download Mode" again and flash the G870A_NG3_Stock_Kernel also in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
6. Download SuperSu to manage root access. Done!
Troubleshooting:
1. If the NG3 OTA update fails consider flashing the G870AUCU1ANE4_Full_Odin.tar to return to stock then take the NG3 OTA update, (or place the G870A_NE4toNG3_OTA.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload from stock recovery). Once updated to NG3 continue to Step 2 above.
2. The most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure.
Notes:
1. After flashing the NE4 kernel your phone may run a little wonky and towelroot may not root on the first try. If that happens reboot and try towelroot once again. Once rooted and after flashing the NG3 kernel your phone will once again run like a champ!
2. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.

Nope.
Does anyone have a list of the benefits of updating to NG3?
I just rooted my new phone on NE4 and I want to know whether it's worth taking the time.
Thanks for the How-to! Worked great for me!
Any benefits on ng3 over stock?
Root possible for 'straight out-of-the-box' G870AUCU1ANG3???
I've looked and looked around the forums here and have come to the conclusion that the AT&T S 5 I recently picked up is, sadly, unable to be rooted. Does anyone here know if this is true? As the title suggests, my phone seems to have come loaded with G870AUCU1ANG3. Is it possible that it came with the previous iteration (NE4, I think??) and I didn't avoid an update, thus meaning I can flash the earlier version? Can I even tell whether it's possible to 'revert' to NE4 (or whatever it would be)? Is any of this even possible without having been previously rooted, or am I wasting my time searching this out? Naive but earnest questions... sorry if I'm in the wrong place here. I promise, I poked around the site for a few days in search of clarity before posting.

There shouldn't be any reason why you can't follow the instructions in the 1st post of this thread starting with step 2.
I've been searching for a while and can't find anything about using this root method and then being able to install safestrap. Has anyone been successful in doing this? Do I need to downgrade before and does anybody have the downgrade file? FYI Just bought my phone last night and was successful in rooting.

Never mind, I figured it out. If you have the active you need to downgrade the kernel to NE4 like you do if you need root. Then you install Safestrap 3.75. I'm doing a Nandroid backup as I type. I'm going to re-flash the NG3 stock kernel when I'm done and hopefully that will be fine.
If it bricks, I can always take it back since I blocked the knox counter... BTW I'm on At&T
I downgraded to the NE4 to root. Along with others here I have to ask, what are, if any, benefits to upgrading the kernel?

Not sure I understand the question but I will take a shot......typically the kernel, modules, and non-hlos.bin have to match or else you may experience issues such as no wifi, lag, etc. The NE4 and NG3 kernel and modules may be similar enough that you will not experience issues immediately but they may develop later unless you reflash the NG3 kernel to match your modules and non-hlos.

I see. Thank you, that answers my question.
THanks XDA
Been away along time. Had iphones for the last 6 years. Use to go here all the time in the Kaiser days (Att Tilt) if any of you remember. I see XDA has still been kicking ass while I've been gone! Glad to be back and Thank You everyone especially first poster for the guide to root my Att GS5 Active.
THANK YOU
Working perfectly. ..thank you. ..g
There was a small update released today. Can someone that is rooted grab it from their fota/cache folder and send to me so that I can update this guide? Thanks.
WORKED! AWESOME!
Now... I have installed SuperSU. Was that left out of the first post?
Also, if I do not flash the NG3 Stock Kernel back afterwards, will I experience funkiness?
Thanks again!
#1-"com.tmobile.pr.adapt (10001) has been granted superuser permissions for an interactive shell" pops up on my screen every 30 seconds on the bottom of my screen in a grey box.
#2- i also noticed that i can accept and recieve calls but i can not hear, nor can the other person hear me. if i use hangouts video call, skype, etc it works fine.
#3-i also tried to get rom manager to make a recovery and it says it needs to get CWD recovery to install a new software, the first thing we need to do is install a up to date version, we will begin that process now... etc.. then it says to get started you must first sset up a custom recovery, it gives two options a samsung galaxy s3 on metro pcs or a samsung previal 2 on boost mobile, or device not listed, when i click that it says "SM-G920T does not have an officially supported CWDR yet. Have you installed a CWD based recovery manually?" so im not sure what to do from there, or if i even need that. i have been a iphone user since day one went to android after reading up a lot on it, although rooting is quite different than jailbreaking it seems, i am incredibly excited to get started if i can get past these little problems and get started and figure everything out. ANY advice, or anwsers to these problems would be Greatly appreciated! thanks!
Also i went to dev options in settings and noticed the "OEM unlocking- allow the bootloader to be unlocker" was turned off, i dont know if this is necessary to root if i did something wrong by not turning it on or what, or if it may fix any problems above if i turn it on now. thanks!
I have a samsung Galaxy S6 (SM_G920T) . i Rooted and did not trip Knox, Although i did just remember that my fingerprint sensor is not working either.
Thank you guys so much this si a incredible forum i have spent hours and hours reading and researching before making this post i appreciate it so much!
#1 Freeze that ****. Use some root tool to freeze that T-mobile apk, seems u gave it root permissions at some point. I believe there are a lot of apps that you will want to do the same.
#2 ? No idea. Stock rom/kernel?
#3 What is this I don't even. Don't do that. Go to TWRP's official web, get your zeroflte (SM-GT920T) twrp and flash it via ODIN, or else get the recovery.img and use flashify. All that assuming you want a custom recovery.
You will need to unlock the bootloader if you are on 5.1.1. I believe locked will prevent changes or wiping anything on the OS partitions, even recovery (can someone confirm?)
I believe jailbraking and rooting should be pretty much similar, if not the same, as both target to grant the user root access to do whatever he pleases on the OS.
Welcome to android btw.
How did you root? Sounds like you used the modified sboot which causes no sounds in calls and nonfunctional fingerprint scanner. If so, flash back to stock and use a different rooting method. The rest, pretty much what the above poster stated
Root
I rooted using the version that I found the only one that works it seemed like, went to Odin put my phone In download mode and then put the boot loader download in BL and the. Put a something unikernel.sbin I believe, whatever the guide said also then it was done. I thought you couldn't use the twrp or custom recovery etc on tmobile one yet but I just read a thing about xtrestolite odex pure v2 which says it's for 5.1.1 and my model of phone but in the guide it says to root using CF auto root and a link there to it but the link doesn't have my phone on the list that the guide that clearly is my phone says to use I don't know if I'm missing something but I want to use it I understand most of it but I don't know if I need to unropt first and re root then use Odin and flash twrp that's supported on my phone then use that to recover the rom. Etc. The kernel that says is used in the guide is the same one I downloaded so do I need to remove it all then let it do that or?
Sorry if this didn't make sense I'm halfway there between confused and understood I have spent the last 10 hours reading and trying to figure this out though lol. Thanks guys!
Also
Sorry for adding more but also how do I flash back to stock? Search for the download to the stock image of my phone? Also I could only find one way of rooting everything else said it wasn't working yet or am I missing a big portion of something here?
Just flash the 5.1.1 firmware to return to stock. To root, flash unikernel with Odin. The other method you used was to not trip knox, but as you experienced has side effects. I had to Odin back to 5.1.1 myself. Can't have those issues
thanks!
so how do i flash back to 5.1.1? find the ling to completely stock 5.1.1 and flash through odin in the same spot and same way i flashed the kernel to root? also.. i rooted with " s6_UniKernel_v2-0003-ODIN.tar" is that not the one you were talking about?

Yes, flashing to 5.1.1 works exactly like that. You need to get the version for your model (very important on this one) and then simply place that file in the AP field of ODIN while the device is in recovery mode. It is normal for ODIN to freeze for 2 minutes while verifying. Make sure to use a MD5 checker tool on the firmware before flashing.
Rooting has historically required more technical savvy and balls than jailbreaking, but PingPong made rooting the S6 brain-dead simple. CF-Auto root is still pretty painless, but you must make sure you have the right zip for your device.
Anyhoo, the quickest & easiest way to restore phone calls & fingerprint scan is to use Odin to get back to bone stock.
Next, use PingPong to root. After rooting, "com.tmobile.pr.adapt" will ask for root access. That is T-Mobile's "phone home" app and sends info about your device (probably including root status). Deny it root access and make sure you check "Remember my choice", and it won't bother you again. You will not lose any functionality by denying it root, so terminate that crap.
Don't bother with rom manager. CWM is archaic. If you want a custom recovery, use TWRP. You can install TWRP either using Odin or TWRP Manager app (it's free).
Good luck and have fun with your S6

Are you still rooted? If so, and if you are experiencing the call audio issue, go flash AOU's kernel. He has made a kernel for the tmo s6. that should eliminate your call audio issue. The finger print scanner is the only issue with flashing his kernel. Also, I rooted with the modded sboot, his TWRP and kernel, and I didn't trip knox

Ok so first let me apologize if I overlooked a similar post but I've been having root issues for weeks now and haven't found my exact situation yet.
Here's the background. I have an AT&T Note 3 N900A. When I got the phone I had no issue using towel root to root the device. Worked first try. I'm new to rooting and I was in love with all the new options. I started small playing with xposed and fonts overclocking etc. Then started researching custom Roms. Discovered cwm twrp wouldn't work with my locked boot loader so researched and got safestrap. Did the backup made my new Rom slot and with a guide I attempted my 1st custom Rom flash. FAIL. bootloop. Revert to stock Rom via Odin. Download towel root. Rooted. No problem.
2nd attempt at custom Rom flash with safe strap. fail. Download another stock firmware (at this point I was still dumb to the difference between NL1 NC2 OC2 etc). And in still dumb to oxed and deoxed. But apparently I got out of bootloop with a different firmware version this time around. First I decided to run lollipop 5.0. Towel root said device not suported. Now I'm running 4.4.4 NL1. device not supported. Also can't get kingoroot king root(pc or non pc) cf or anything else I've tried to work. From what I've read I need to go back to the NC2 4.4.2 and run towel root from there.
My current issue is I have no windows pc to run Odin on and my wife's MacBook refuses to install the Mac version correctly nor will it load the Web based version on the casual page.
I just figured out that I can't use safe strap to flasthe nc2 until I'm rooted. And without Odin to revert I'm scared to try any other method without some guidance.
First off... Is there any way to root my current 4.4.4 without going to the nc2 or if I allow my phone to upgrade to 5.o again is there a non pc root method on lollipop yet?
Or would I be able to download a nc2. Zip to my phone save to sd and use the note 3 stock recovery to revert? ?
I'm open to any suggestions you guys may have even if I haven't mentioned it in my post. Hope to get some answers asap and thanks in advance!!
I'm not familiar with the Note 3 for AT&T but Heimdall (in place of Odin on a PC) may work on your mac to flash ROMs.
http://glassechidna.com.au/heimdall/
Yeah I tried that a while back but it was b4 I knew this much. Maybe j can get it working now. I was just hoping there was an easier way.
Hi All,
I am a newbie to the root world and in a lapse of judgement I decided to root my phone a year or so back. Naturally I had no idea what I was doing but I think I sort of did it. Now my phone is in this weird root limbo where it is rooted but not really. I can't unroot with supersu it just gives me an error or keeps spinning and does nothing. On boot my phone says Custom which tells me it is kind of rooted and some apps wont work as it says my phone has been modified or has root access. Also my updates fail but I have never quite gotten full root access and things just act weird. I guess that's what I get.... So naturally I have come full circle and would like to remove root and just install a stock rom so I can receive updates on this thing. Also, I am terrified of bricking it. I have searched all over your forum and found 18 versions of 15 roms with 13 ways to do it and I have no clue which way is the correct way. I know baseband plays a role along with version. So here is what I have;
Model: (AT&T)
SAMSUNG-SM-N900A
Android Version:
4.4.2
Baseband Version:
N900AUCUCNC2
Kernel Version:
3.4.0-722276
I hope I didn't miss anything. Some clarity on this matter would be most appreciated and I want to thank anyone for helping me. I hope this post isn't a repeat of some previous post. I tried looking but some details were slightly different. Please help and thank you in advance.

Aside from the fact that NC2 (that's really all the information you need - NC2 for the N900A - isn't currently listed at SamMobile, that's really all you need. Once you download the firmware, you just use Odin to flash it to the phone. I'm about to leave the house or I'd upload it to Mega and give you a link to use to download it (if you trust me - it's exactly the firmware I downloaded from SamMobile when they had it up a few years ago.) Post here if you want me to and I will. Or just look around this forum (AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 3) for an NC2 link. (You'll be updated over the air, to 5.0.1, if you're not rooted, though, so you could use an unrooted OC1 or OC2 firmware, which are here (somewhere). (Oc1 and OC2 are the Lollipop ROMs.)
Edit:
Walter has a link to the OC1 (Lollypop) ROM at https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/general/100-stock-lollipop-5-0-n900aucueoc1-t3069609 You probably want to back everything up, then use the 4-file version. Then you can restore everything except root.
Hi all.
So it's been a while that I've rooted a phone (Note 4 years ago).
Getting a refurbished Note 8 very soon (UK).
I just want to root it and install only what's needed, without applying custom roms etc.
Just need it rooted for Titanium Backup, modded Google Play. Stuff like that.
Hope someone can help me in how I should go about it.
Also should I update the phone to 9.0 as soon as I boot it up?
Thanks.
Edit: Got the phone now. It took me to the home screen when first booted up. Looks like already updated to version 9. Does rooting still trigger KNOX?

Yes rooting will trip Knox.
To flash TWRP just follow the steps in this thread - https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/recovery-official-3-3-1-x-twrp-for-galaxy-note8-exynos.3832962/ (just use the latest TWRP which is 3.5 I believe)
If you're just going to root stock filmware you will need to flash RMM/KG bypass or you will get locked out of your phone (only official filmware can be flashed error, then you will have to flash stock to fix it) - https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ll-twrp-on-exynos-samsung-after-2018.3747535/
If you are going to flash a custom rom they have the RMM state prepatched so this step would not be necessary. To flash a custom rom just follow the steps laid out in the OP of the rom you want to use.
