As we all know the setup process on iOS severely neuters the watch in terms of available apps and wifi being enabled.
I have enabled root and it looks like all the required files are present (wpa_supplicant etc) however icant seem to see how to enable the wifi.
Anyone have any ideas where to look, imagine its an init script somewhere.

Ive done a TWRP backup of an Android setup and an iOS setup, so far the system directories are identical.
Managed to get wifi working, you need to populate the config file
\data\misc\wifi\wpa_supplicant.conf
then enable wifi
svc wifi enable
Still no data in the interface tho!

have you pulled the wpa_supplicant.conf, then edit and then push it again? where is the exact lcoation?

i never tried to monitor wifi hotspot clients but i think these ways should work.
way 1:
goto terminal, type:
arp -a
this command displays all entries, since the wifi connection actually makes the phone a router, so all connected clients should have corresponding arp entry.
way 2:
goto market and download Network Discovery application, use it to scan the whole network. Also it provides port scanning function too.
(but .. this application usually crashes on my phone after scanning for long time)

Tested, even the basic "busybox arp" with no switches works. The result needs to go through grep or use "specify interface" switch to avoid showing the 3G data IP.
I suppose that access control has to be implemented in the kernel, so I won't mess with it - but now I have a script line to see, who's connected. Thanks
And one day someone could write a widget for it. At least modify the on/off widgets to show the number of connected clients.
Any more news on this? The network discovery app kind of worked, but it had to use wifi which disabled tethering.
I think there has to be a way to see who is connected to your hotspot at one time without disabling anything.
The Palm Pre Plus on Verizon does this automatically. There are a lot of features that phone has that I wish android would impliment...Man it would have been nice if google had bought palm

You want an app/widget for that? There is none. I've turned to the creator of the "hotspot widget" and asked him to implement counter for connected clients (which should good enough for anything I can think of), but I got no answer. I also tried to find any open-source code for such widget to modify and add the functionality, but didn't find any.
The older Eclair CM build had such app for manual control, showing MACs of connected clients.
I dont think the stock froyo tethering implements this but the wired/wireless tether apps included in 2.1 roms has the function, mac address filtering too =D
Hey everyone I'm rooted and everything so I've been trying to find a way to get around paying $30 for a hot spot that should come with the phone. anyways I found a way to disable the "you are not subscribed to hot spot" thing but when I connect anything to the hot spot I keep getting errors saying the DNS couldn't resolve server names. I tried for hours with different DNS servers so I'm guessing it's something vm has done. If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it I used it a lot before I got this phone and now I'm kinda stuck :/
I know from experience that you can usb tether with pdanet and it'll hide your tethering with metro. It will not however hide hotspot HOW EVER you can use its experimental feature internet sharing which is essence creates a hotspot however I've only ever been able to connect to a phone that was with metro AND the phone that was hotspotting was not with metro. Trying to do so with my metro phone give me dns errors as well.
I haven't tried to use USB tethering yet only because some of my things can't be tethered via USB. I just don't see why I'd be getting DNS errors now and never did before. Oh wel. Surely someone here will have a solution for me soon.

I don't know if you are rooted, but I'm using Wifi Tether Router (just google an apk file) instead of trying for the native hotspot function.

Are you sure? I tried this app before and it wouldn't broadcast the network. And yes I am rooted. I found a way to partially get the native hotspot working but it's a pain in the butt. If I could figure out how to edit the apn settings I'd have it going in 5 seconds but they're locked and htc phones don't have a "hidden menu" like lg phones.
Weird... Well, If you can't get that working, I'll let you know my current configurations for that app.

I'm looking for a solution for the hotspot on my 626 from Verizon.
native mobile hotspot and tether on cricket
I was able to use the phone as a wifi hotspot by doing the following:
1) install the following apps: MK explorer, Axel (xml editor)
2) phone must be rooted
3) using MK explorer navigate to the following folder (root directory): /system/customize/ACC
4) make a copy of the default.xml file and rename it in case it gets corrupted
5) run Axel and open the default.xml file for editing
6) scroll down about 80% from the top of the file to find the entry (find didn't work for me):

. 3 (note:dot is in middle)
7) edit the entry to change the 3 to 0
8) use "save as" and save modified file
9) rename the edited file to default.xml
10) reboot
11) go to settings->more->mobile hotspot and tethering, click on Mobile Hotspot, click on OK, change the hotspot name and password to what you want
12) after this step the phone just sat there so I rebooted
13) hotspot now works
I have no idea if this is hidden from the carrier
Awesome developer Joao have (yesterday) released a brand new app called AutoTools to his big AutoApps-library. It´s supposed to be a ``supercharged Tasker´´. For example it has it´s own ``secure settings´´ very similar to the old original Secure Settings-app it self that stopped development a couple of years ago. And wait for it... it does NOT require root!
There are though warnings that claims the functions will not work on all phones and also to enable ``secure settings´´ you need to connect the phone to a PC and install a specific software etc. (all info is in the app).
I have not yet dived into all the functions myself but only checked it briefly. But this is exactly what Tasker needs And who else to bring it than Joao, he is really brilliant :good:

This allows you to change settings on your device that you normally wouldn't be able to with Tasker
NO ROOT is needed for this action
Examples

Change Animation Speed with a Quick Tile on Android 7 and Above
Change input keyboard depending on situation
Set Screen Orientation
To use this, AutoTools needs to be granted permission to change secure settings on your device
How to grant AutoTools the Secure Settings permission
Enable Developer Mode: Go to Android Settings -> About Phone and look for the Build Number option. Touch it multiple times until developer mode is enabled.
Enable USB Debugging: Go to Android Settings -> and look for the Developer Options option. In there, enable the USB debugging option.
Install ADB on your PC: Check here for a quick way to do it.
Connect device to PC: Connect your device to a PC and look on your phone. A prompt should show up asking you to allow your phone to be debugged by your PC. Accept this.
Grant permission: Open a command line on your PC and write
adb shell pm grant com.joaomgcd.autotools android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
Congratulations, AutoTools should now be able to use the "Secure Settings" action!

Warning info inside the app claims that ``mobile data´´ only will work on 25% of all devices, but I can confirm that it works on my S7 edge. Also power saver mode and GPS ''battery saver/high accuracy/off'' works as a charm.

Just tried it and got some strange results lol. Airplane mode enables (icon lights up) and mobile data turns off BUT cell connection is still up and I can make calls and send texts. So you could say that I get ``almost airplane mode...´´.
I read about some Marshmallow bug though for third party apps writing system settings even with permissions, could be what causing this.. https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=194376

It has been out as a Beta app for a long time. It was released to the public a few days ago :-}
For Airplane Mode ( I don't have root), I use AutoInput to open up the notifications shade, then simulate a press of the airplane mode button. Works perfect
This is a lifesaver coming from Tasker + Secure Settings and System Module+ enabled which is not functioning with Marshmallow for GPS until I found someone talking about this app. Confirmed working with Marshmallow on LG G5 I'm very happy as soon as I saw it worked, I just bought the full version. This was the only issue I had as I like to use Waze often in my car and one or two less clicks is just another annoyance I didn't need :laugh:

Not sure if you found the answer, but Google recently released an installer for just the tools like adb and fastboot: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html

Ok i don't know if this the right forum but i looking to give out to a few workers phones or tablets that have no internet access at all (i only want them to use if for calls and SMS - i not going to explain why i want it that way). i'm looking for an easy way to disable the network altogether.
i've got a GT-S6310 SAMSUNG or fire tablet. i tried an idea that i got into the platform.xml file (with the RomToolBox app) that is located in the etc/permission folder and erased the internet line>save and then restart and it worked. but there many problems like apps that crashed without even opening theme like google services.
i'm looking to just erase or change one file in the system to get to my goal. i'm sure that there are very specific files that are critical for the internet to work and if they are disabled or changed the internet access would go down. please help

This device (5th gen Fire) has no mobile radio so is off the table for your requirements. If you plan to leverage WiFi calling/SMS then that uses data, aka "the internet". Crafty individuals will easily circumvent any blocks applied at the ROM level unless device is rooted and you use secondary accounts. A bit harder to work around but still fairly easy to penetrate.

Rooted decive! So what can i do? What system file can i erase to stop any internet connection? Or maybe something that has to do with the buildprop file

Look into selectively blocking internet access via third party firewall, hosts file or VPN. Likely need to create secondary/child accounts to limit access to the filtering tools. You'll need to do some searching/testing to find a solution that meets your requirements. Probably not the right device for what you are trying to accomplish.
So I am currently trying to make a non-root app that sends a text message with the geo position when receiving a password with the app factory. Problem is, that I haven't been able to find any reliable method of activating GPS on non-root devices. I have looked into secure settings, but that one needs root access to change location status. AutoTools secure settings has to be set up from the pc through adb to work proberly and most shell commands need root access as well.
So after all this I have narrowed it down to the possibility of being able to force android to show the GPS dialogue for the app. Is this possible, and if so, how?
I'm running OP2 with Pixel Experience android 8.1

Things have been changed after jelly bean... To enable gps automatically we need root permission.. I use AutomateIt app for the same setup but i needed root to activate gps automatically.

Dang it! I know it's possible with autotools, it's just not optimal for a. User to have to connect their device to the pc, learn about adb and all to get it to work..
