Moving apps SD CM 12.1 - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Everyone
I have an S3 Mini, running the latest version of CM 12.1 (20151007)
I know there are a few bugs in 5.1.1
I have searched Google and xda but haven't had much luck.
I have approx.
1.6GB free space in my internal storage
2GB free space in my external storage
I'm trying to move apps to the SD card
I have tried the stock Method,
various apps to attempt to move to the SD card, or force the apps to move.
I have tried the settings in the apps to try different methods. force to SD, Link to SD, A2SD, apps to sd. (even root versions)
I keep getting an error saying I don't have enough space.
It will come up with the error no matter what the size, less than 1mb or 400mb +
I have tried factory resetting the device, nothing seems to work.
I can download fine to the SD card.
I don't really want to partition / format it... But I haven't formatted the SD card since before the device was rooted / stock firmware
On a side note since the update I have had an issue on two occasions with charging, tried 5 different cords, 3 wall sockets, a PC and the device wouldn't charge (happened suddenly as I took it off charge as I was going to my bedroom), till I factory reset the device then it charged perfectly, charger port in device is fine.

I have also tried erasing everything, dalvic cache, cache system data, reinstalling cm 12.1 from scratch. Excuse my spelling

Keeps say "INSTALLING" but never completes and 16gb sd question, Thanks!

Happy Holidays, i'm using [ROM] RoDrIgUeZsTyLe™ 1.8, i've been using this rom for a couple weeks, i've been using his roms for a couple months. For some reason when i try to install apps from my sd card or market, it keeps saying "installing" but never completes. If I download from market it downloads 100% then says installing but never completes. I tried reinstalling some apps from sd card but it keeps saying installing. I wiped twice (factory reset). I went to [ROM] RoDrIgUeZsTyLe™ 1.9 back to 1.8 and same thing.
Also I just bought a 16gb sd card. I've read some say you don't have to partion anymore and i've read some say you need to. If you do, what settings should i use? I didn't know so i just set up 32mb, 512mb ext.2 and remainder ext. 3
But I go to settings and it says total space 14.32bg
Available 9.71gb
A2SD 457 mb

And how much free space in /data and and have you moved dalvik-cache anywhere? If so, how much room there? Especially if you moved Dalvik cache to /cache

thanks for your response.
It claims 102mb available internal memory, i personally don't think that much is available.
As for Dalvik i don't know where it is or anything about it. The only time i've touched it was after rooting once i clicked clear dalvik cache. Should I move dalvik, if so how, how do i find out how much room is on it.?
Earlier after flashing the same rom again, it let me download about 20 apps then it went back to downloading 100% but not letting me install or uninstall anything from market or sdcard.
Not really sure on your problem, but--
Doesn't it say how much a2sd memory free?
How did you partition?
You want 512mb/ext3/no swap, not 32mb
If all worked ok before new card I would--
- backup SD Card
- Format SD Card with "SD Formatter" in a Card reader (FULL erase ON & NEW Size Adjustment ON). You can get it on web. It puts card to original condition.
- create ext3 with above specs. Amon will do that. Rom Mgr seems to do only ext2, however you can verify that with Mini Partition Tool Wizard from web.
-I did ext 2 thru Rom Mgr then used Amon to convert to ext3. Converting 2 to 3 did not wipe sdcard, but making partition will.
- put the backup back to SD
Of course you want USB Debugging enabled and Unknown Sources enable to do all this stuff. May not matter on just a Market app, but have them enabled anyway
Then follow instructions on OP page, if any, to move apps to sdcard. Or, see Dark Tremor web site.
I don't normally put Dalvik on sd, just cache.

sorry for late response Ken, so let me get this right, I downloaded sd formatter. So use this instead of the Amon recovery option Partition SD on my Nexus? I'm confused on the first partion you say should be 512mb then it ask about ext2 what should that be? then for ext 3 put NO SWAP?
And this Dalvik thing, so there's no need to move it to sd card? If so how? You said you just moved yours to cache or cleared the cache? if you moved it can you give me instructions.
Also the rom i'm using is Rod's

getting stuck on "installing" may be a problem with your google account. google still hasnt figured out why its happening. if it happens across different roms, that is probably the case

[Q] Internal SD card not recognized CyanogenMod 7 nightly

I've just now flashed the latest Cyanogenmod 7 nightly on my O2X, and I'm experiencing a problem with my internal SD card.
Any app that want to use the internal SD card is unable to do so because supposedly the card is not mounted, while under Settings - Storage - Internal SD Card, it gives me an option to unmount the card. I've tried unmounting and mounting again, but that didn't do anything.
When I connect my phone to my laptop using USB, the only option I get is the USB Debugging (if I have that on). The only way to get the option to turn on USB storage is if I power off the phone, connect the USB and then power up the phone. That way I get the option to turn on USB storage, but when I do that, nothing happens on the computer or the phone.
If I reboot the phone in recovery mode, then I can select instal zip from internal sd card and then see the different folders on the card, but I have not dared to see if can actually flash Cyanogenmod again in fear of not being able to get any kind of contact with my sd card.
Now I realize that there are ways of fixing this issue, but is there a way that will help me keep the data I have on my internal sd card? I have a lot of information on it that I don't want to lose at all.
Even ideas of how I could backup the internal sd card so that I can just go crazy and format the card would highly appreciated! I've tried the Software Data Cable app, but that didn't work either.
Any help you can give me would be a major relief as I have been struggling with this problem through the night without much results.
Some info:
Before flash: Stock Gingerbread (Android 2.3.4)
Flashed ROM: CyanogenMod-7-20120313-NIGHTLY-p990 (Android 2.3.7)
Phone: LG Optimus 2X p990
No external SD card
Accessing internal storage
Go to settings - CyanogenMod Settings - Application
And check the Internal storage box.
If you have issues with some apps check the "allow moving.." as well
AND change the install location to internal. On automatic this should work anyway since you are not using an externalSD.
--- REMEMBER TO REBOOT---
If you are still having problems fix permissions and reflash the same nightly or a newer one. (data is not lost... dont wipe)
Dont think this applies to you.. but just in case.
If you still have issues with any apps and their settings. Delete the app data at the Application Manager. Then before opening/running the app, delete its associated folders on the sd. (You should be able to mount by now.) Reboot and things should be working fine. Dont worry about this last paragraph if you are not having issues with apps not saving data/starting/cant find sd card etc. Since you dont have a external SD.
Yeah, I found this out just two minutes ago, and now everything works! Thanks a lot elkhawkes!
Woah, I'm happy now!
I don't see why this isn't standard in CyanogenMod though. What are the benefits of "hiding" the internal SD card like that? Is it considered that people who flash CyanogenMod doesn't have anything useful on their internal SD, but rather the external one? At least for me, I had a lot of application data, pictures and text files I needed on the internal SD card.
Well, anyways, all is well for me now, so far...
Ok, I've noticed a problem.
You were right about some apps having problems. It seems like Whatsapp and SwiftKey is unable to save their stats. Message count and keystroke count returns to 0 every time I reboot. Its not the biggest problem, but it might be a symptom of a bigger problem, so I want to fix it.
I have tried all the different suggestions you mention for solving problems with apps, but none of them work. Even when I delete the Whatsapp folder on the internal SD card, the app still has problems saving its stats. I guess that might be because there are more Whatsapp files in one of the android folders on the card.
I was thinking that I might be able to do this sequence of things to fix it, but I'd like to get some confirmation that it might work and I won't brick my phone or will be having to buy and external SD card:
1. Copy everything on the internal SD card to my computer. (Already done!)
2. Re-flash the latest CyanogenMod nightly (and Google Apps) from the internal SD card using ROM Manager and delete all data cache, dalvik and so on.
3. Before installing any apps I go to Settings - CyanogenMod settings - Application and check Use internal storage. That way my internal SD card will be "visible".
4. Go to Settings - Storage and then selecting Erase SD card (note this is the internal SD card, I do not have an external card).
Questions:
- Will step 4. delete everything on the SD card, including all files in the Android folders?
- Will I still be able to use my phone with Cyanogenmod without having any files on the internal SD card (and no external card in the phone) or does flashing CyanogenMod or any other ROM on the phone install crucial files on the internal SD card? I want to know this for sure, because if I can't, then I will have no way of returning to a working ROM or flash a new one. I want to avoid a brick at all cost.
- Can I then start installing all the apps I want and then trying to copy only the folders containing for example the media and messages folders for Whatsapp back to the SD card to recover those on the fresh install?
** What about the Factory data reset option in CyanogenMod? Is that something I can use for this? Will the phone be reset to "factory" with CyanogenMod installed and no other old files on it, so that everything is fresh and I can install my apps and then copy media/backup folders to get the apps running without problems and with my old media?
Any help with this matter would be highly appreciated!

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: No properly made Android version should depend on certain files being present on the SD-card. CM7 is a "proper" version.

You should in most cases be able to do that, yes. You may run into trouble if you copy the data back after installing the app if it is running at the time. You may want to mount USB storage/copy data while in CWM to be sure that does not happen.

Yes, you should be able to do this. (Be aware that a factory reset, whether built-on or CWM, does not delete anything on the SDcard.) Some apps may initialize their external storage on the first start, some apps may find inconsistencies in the external data, especially if they use som kind of secure or encrypted storage, but that is probably not very common
Fix for apps
... Follow the steps in my post above and then uninstall the effected app, reboot and install again.
If you have backed up the whatsapp folder. Put it back on the sdcard before running the newly installed whatsapp and it should ask to import the backed up files.
- I think it only works if you place the files back before running the freshly installed app.
I`m guessing you might have tried this already. Hope this helps
Like Testing7 said, the files visible on the sd card are safe to delete but erasing the sd and factory resetting is probably not necessary. Personally I backup my important folders.. whatsapp etc on the pc regularly and erase the sd all the time. Its not really neccessary and I do this because I like to keep it clean and its just a "bad" habit from testing out different roms. The folders there are generally just clutter and also use a minimum amount of space, so really it is up to you. They do build up again pretty fast so dont worry about it.
- If you are still having problems... Just start from scratch again
# Backup - SMS and apps... I use Sms/app backup and restore... 2 separate apps on market (both free).
# Copy necessary folders and files to pc - then erase SD
# Recovery - Wipe cache, factory reset, Dalvik, battery stats ... on full battery
# Reflash nightly cm7
# Change all settings like in my first post and then reinstall all apps and backup files.
# And remember to restore files first before running the apps for the first time

[Q] CM10 and AOKP - Internal, SD card and USB storage mapping broken

I've got a Samsung Galaxy Note n7000. I've hopped around a bit, but recently I've tried to move (back) to JB based CM10 (nightly) and also AOKP (JB Milestone 1).
For both CyanogenMod and AOKP, I quickly came across the issue that most apps can't see any storage folders. This includes:
-Browser and Chrome can't save files as there's 'No storage'.
-Google Maps won't cache anything.
-The camera and gallery won't work because they can't see any storage.
-When I plug the phone in to a PC via USB, the phone is identified, but no storage folders come up, regardless as to whether I'm using MTP or MS.
-In the system settings under storage, it can see the 2GB for my app Data partition. It says there's a 32GB SD card available, but under the Internal Storage heading, clicking 'Mount SD card' flashes up something in the notification bar before looking like nothing happened. There's nothing about the internal ~10GB partition either.
However, if I go into a file browser, I can see both the internal storage mapped as /storage/sdcard0 and the SD card mapped as /storage/sdcard1. I believe this is how JB is now mapping storage now? Why is it confusing itself?
Note:
-I can see the storage in CWM without issues (although internal and SD might be reversed???).
-I can read the files fine from a file manager, so there's nothing wrong with the SD card as far as I can tell. It works fine in an SD card reader too.
-I tried AOKP first after a full wipe (factory, data, davlik), hit the issue. Tried CM10 which was the same. Tried AOKP again with a factory wipe before and after flash and it still didn't work.
I've been trying to find a solution for nearly 2 weeks now! Please help before I give up and flash back to a Samsung based ROM!
For history:
I've had the GNote unlocked for a while and I've played with a few ROMs including CM9, earlier releases on CM10 without any issues. For the past couple of months I went back to an ICS TouchWiz based ROM as I thought the only way to get an MS Exchange email email app with full device encryption was to use Samsung's.... anyway, found an app that'll do it for me without suffering the slow down of encrypting the whole phone AND putting TouchWiz on, so I thought I'd try to go back to a 'pure' ROM until I ran into the above problem... Is it because I previously had the phone fully encrypted? I can see the folders now though.... AAAARRRRGGH!
...
Just in case it was an issue that has been fixed recently.... I tried ParanoidAndroid for the Note (v2.54 10 Nov 2012)... same issue. I did a factory reset, cache wipe and davlik wipe before and after flashing. Still both internal and SD storage are mapped so the apps and System settings can't see them.
What is wrong?
Update 2...
I tried flashing the following ROMs:
-A TouchWiz based ICS ROM (Sweet v5)
-A stock based ICS ROM (CM9.1)
-A TouchWiz based Jelly Bean ROM (Rocket Bean V2)
-Re-flashing CM10 nightlies
In every case both the internal and SD storage can't be seen in System>Storage.
What have I done???? Have I somehow screwed up the formatting on both the internal and SD card, yet CWM can read it??? Any ideas?
im on a XXLS7 based rom and its in
/storage/extSdCard
/storage/sdcard0
may be you want flash a stock GB or ICS rom again using Odin and start fresh
I haven't tried Odin yet... but when I was about to, I discovered something. I installed Titanium Backup. Instead of complaining I didn't have any storage (like all other apps), it complained that my storage directory wasn't writeable...
How do I check what the permissions are? What should they be? How do I fix it?!!!
Thanks.
Hi!
I have the same issue.
I'm currently on RocketRom V3 but I had the issues with others roms before.
I have a temporally fix: using root explorer, set the permission from r/o to r/w for the folder /mnt/sdcard
But after a while (fews minutes), it turn back to r/o, I don't know who/why.
Same here. Thought it was me!
Started when I switched to jb leak.
Says storage us full when I try to open camera, etc, even though it's not true
Sent from the man hiding in your attic.....
Ok, I found an fix that works for me
It looks that I had a bad file/folder/whatever on my internal storage, so the system put /sdcard (internal memory) on read only as it notice the bad thing.
Formating sdcard or emmc from cwm didn't work, full wipe neither, formatting internal from android settings neither, but I manage to mount internal SD on my computer using mass strorage (UsB switcher is included on Rocket V3 to switch from MTP to Mass storage)
Once mounted in Windows, I did a full format (fat32) of the internal memory, and so far it works!
I re-formatted my SD card in a memory card reader. I've put it back in the phone and now when I plug my phone in to my PC and select USB mass storage, the SD card comes up in Windows and I can write to it! Woot!
At the moment I still can't write to my internal storage (which means most apps still complain). It appears as a drive in Windows via USB, but I can't open it. I'll try Feyris' RocketRom suggestion later.
Any guess as to why this has happened? Anything to do with the fact I had full-device encryption on the phone before????
Is there any way to sawp the card location as on im on jb its taking external card as internal default location..As i am having class 4 sdcard so itz slowing down the system

When I put my Rocket V3 into the mac with usb switcher it mounts two drives. Both, however, are part of the internal SD card. It does not mount the proper external sd card. One is titled sdcard of the drives just called sdcard, the other is called storage (which has folders sdcard0, extSdCard, and usbstorageA-F). Should I format them both? Do I need to recopy all the files back onto the sdcard before booting up again?
Thanks!
Edit: I was either totally confused (most likely) or somehow I managed to fix my issue (less likely)...so I am ok now.
Internal Storage Mount
So I am having a similar issue.
I have an Evo 4g LTE running CM10 (cm-cfX-20120904-OFFICIAL-jewel)
I tried upgrading to the 11-13 build from get.cm site. I factory reset, wiped delvik, installed .zip from external sd card, installed gapps (gapps-jb-20121011-signed) wiped delvik again, rebooted, everything came up like it should, but I had no mobile data connection. All of my settings said unknown. So I rolled back to the (cm-cfX-20120904-OFFICIAL-jewel) build. Everything was working fine again, except I went open CWM v 5.8.3.5 from my app drawer and noticed message "you need sd card to run clockworkmod" so I went to sys settings > storage > internal storage (not mounted > mount storage and it attempts to read the data, but then does nothing. No error message or anything. I can't get my computer (windows 7) to read my internal storage so I can't format (which I have already done before)
I'm getting really frustrated as I have searched everywhere for the fix and have found nothing. If anyone has any idea I would greatly appreciate it.
Finally got around to spending a few hours on this yesterday to try to fix my 'missing' internal storage...
As suggested by nokiamodeln91 (cheers mate), I used Odin to go back to a stock ROM. Steps:
-Did a CWM backup of my current my current favourite ROM (I also used Titanium and SMS backup, but didn't need it in the end).
-Found an appropriate Samsung factory ROM. I went back to 2.3.6 as it's supposed to be safer. (For the n7000, make sure you choose an early one and not 'L' series or it's harder to root.)
-Used Odin to write the factory ROM. Note I only wrote the ROM, I didn't flash the modem, PIT, etc.
-Confirmed that I could see both my internal storage and my SD card (and also confirmed that a factory fresh install from Samsung looks and feels as ugly as I remembered).
-Used an 'update' hack to give me root.
-Installed CWM again.
-Simply restored my CWM backup of my favourite ROM...
In reality I went down several dead-ends... but I eventually got it all working again.

Dude! you are insane...Got my S2 4.1.2 working, thanks to you.. tried for 3 days back to back until i stumbled on your solution.
Thanks so much.
A BIG Thanks to Guigsy & nokiamodeln91
Long story short is I broke the screen to my GNote 2 which is on its way to Samsung for repair (A little under US$200 round trip). When I removed the battery to get the emie number there was "goo" oozing out the back from the screen I suspect.
Anyway, turned on my GNote 1, which hasn't seen the light of day since last October and booted to discover that it wasn't working right. I tinkered for quite an embarrassingly long time to where I found myself in the same situation as others here. No write access to the internal storage on my CWM rooted GNote.
Although I had a nand backup, I ended up using ODIN to flash LT4 Germany, lost root as a result. went back in to Download mode and used ODIN to install PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT4-OXA-5.00.5.tar the exact same way, booted into CWM recovery and flashed PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT4-OXA-5.00.5-sigend.zip and was good to go. Issue definitely resolved.
I did not have root after installing the PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT4-OXA-5.00.5.tar via ODIN but I was able to enter CWM recovery where I then installed the ZIP version. As I had fixed my issues I was able to copy over the ZIP version to my Ext SD card B4 going into recovery mode (Yup, one of the symptoms for me was not being able to copy to the external SD card when the phone was connected to my PC either).
Rebooted signed in and was quickly synching my apps, settings etc. I would have felt comfortable using the nand backup I had originally but since this solution brought me up a few versions of Android, I just did a fresh setup.
Had it not been for XDA and our friends here, I would have formatted, factory reset and who knows what else trying to fix this.
Thanks much,
Claude H.

[Need Help ] SD card partition unrecognized.

I have a problem. I have a 4GB sandisk sd card. Yesterday when I was on stock DDKQ8 ( with other apps installed ). After flashing cwm, I partitioned to have 1GB ext on my sd using cwm. Partitioning took unevenly very long time. But after completion, I connected phone to pc & on opening easus partition manager, it did not read any partition on my sd. I ran the partition recovery wizard but with no use. I tried resizing the primary partition ( now it was reduced to 2.67 GB ) but the option was grey ( unavailable ). Then I disconnected phone & flashed sgs2 rom. But during wiping, when I opted the wipe data/factory reset option, my phone got stuck at formatting sd-ext. I took out battery & tried repartitioning sd card via cwm. This time it was a bit faster & I got through the wiping quickly & flashed the rom. Flashed d2ext+ & rebooted. In storage option under settings, I found that my internal memory was successfully extended. I was able to install apps & everything was working normally. Thinking that my sd was back on track, I reconnected phone to pc just to verify that the partition was recognized by it. But to my surprise, easus still showed no partition. Now I'm stuck. How do I delete the partition without having to see it ? Will my sd be permanently restricted to reduced memory ? Please help.
Some additional info :
A couple of days ago my friend had brought a pen drive which contained some important files. On connecting it to my pc, windows asked me to scan & fix. I did, but later on data transfer to/from it got really slow & I saw that windows explorer wasn't responding. As he was from the neighbouring town, we couldn't afford to lose the data & somehow after random connecting & disconnecting, I managed to copy the files onto my pc. I formatted the pen drive but the slowpoke problem prevailed. And now I wonder if this in anyway has troubled my sd. Doubting this, I formatted my C:/ drive & reinstalled my windows, in case there were viruses. But the problem was still the same. Thought there might be viruses in my backup files. Ran a boot time scan using avast! for over 2hrs. Found a couple of minor pups. Deleted them & rebooted. But still the same. Unrecognized ( not shown at all, just the primary partition is being shown ) partition by easus. All the drivers are definitely correctly installed by me. I tried copying files to another sd of mine. Even this was awefully slow. Can anyone help me out ?

Can anyone help me out ?

you can cwm partitions by wiping data and other things.
I recommend you to use mini tool partition wizard to make partitions

I already know that but thanks for replying anyway ! I some how managed to get back my sd to its full capacity but the data transfer from pc is extremely slow ( just 24kbps !!! ). I tried this on another pc but same result. So I'm sure it should be the problem with the sd itself. I had a 5 yr warranty on it. Will I get a replacement ?

Actually my friend, it doesn't matter what partition tool you use. As long as you know how to use it, you'll get the same results with each but thanks for trying to help !

How does Android MM, 'Use SD as internal memory' work, and how to prevent data loss?

Hi, I just upgraded yesterday my XT1068 to Android MM (Nexus Experience [http://goo.gl/Qc87Q7]).
And I was delighted to see the option to use my Samsung MicroSD card as internal memory. I installed all the apps I use frequently, restarted the phone and everything was fine till here.
I formatted my micro SD as internal memory, copied music, pictures and stuff using MTP to my SD, installed several apps and uninstalled some other that I didn't need anymore (Like 'Facebook Lite'). Wanted then to restart my phone to recovery mode, but it was restarting for ever and stuck with the rebooting animation, so I decided to press the power button for 3-5 sec to force shutdown the phone. But when my phone started again, everything I copied to the SD was gone, and files I removed were there again, apps like 'Facebook Lite' were mysteriously installed again as if I would have never uninstalled them.
In the launcher, all my icons and folders I organized, reverted to the positions and state I had before, last time I restarted my phone (before the forced restart when I lost the data).
What happened here? Looks somehow as if the partition table is being written back to the SD or phone memory when you are turning off the phone.. and remains in RAM during use.. Seriously?
Did such a thing happen to anybody else here? Is this how the new Android works? Every time your phone crashes or something, you'll loose all pictures and data that changed since last restart?..
Any information on this is highly appreciated.. Thanks.

i have a similar situation with my sd card and my xt1063, at the beggining i choose the option which makes the sd to save files and media. today the phone turned off because the battery was empty, at the time that i tried to turn on the phone it says that the sd card need format and now when i connect the sd card to the pc it is in RAW format. i think that the new system for "initializating" sd cards is broken or something, or simply we have bad luck or else.
edit: i have stock android 6.0 retla
sorry for my english pls
