Screen mirroring on Tab S2 not fullscreen - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I noticed that when using Screen Mirroring from my Tab S2 to any of my Samsung TVs, the picture on the TV is about 3/4 the size. However, when using any of my phones (Galaxy S5, S6 Edge), it shows up fullscreen on the TV and takes up the entire TV screen size.
Does anyone know how to set the Tab S2 to do fullscreen when using Screen Mirroring, similar to the Samsung Galaxy phones? Thanks!

Sounds like your problem is a matter of aspect ratio. Your TV is 16:9 ratio, as is your S5 & S6 afaik. The Tab S2 is 4:3. Its kind of like trying to fit a square peg into a rectangular hole.

Thanks for your reply. Since I can't find out how to adjust the Tab S2 to 16:9, I adjusted my TV to 4:3, but still have the same problem. Lookso like this is a Samsung design flaw? That sucks, I was hoping to screen mirroring and enjoy movies on the TV from the tablet

Not a design flaw the way you mean it. Your S2 is physically a different shape then your TV (L x W pixel ratio). Specifically, the screen on the S2 is a shorter rectangle. Thus, casting the screen to your TV means it won't use the whole TV screen. Setting the TV to 4:3 would be redundant. There might be a way to make the TV stretch the image to 16:9 but it would look stretched, not right. Now, there might be a way to play a 16:9 video (1920/1080p) on your S2 (which on your S2 would show top and bottom black bars) and cast that to your TV in a way that uses the whole TV screen correctly, but I can't instruct how yet. Still playing with mine.

Glad to know that screen mirroring works... may i ask which versions are you guys using... 9.7 inch or 8 inch... and what OS version please? Modified OS?
Thanks.
The reason i asked and glad to know that Mirroring works on our Tab S2 is... i read from one of the review comments from GSM Arena that it does not work.
...

I have the same problem. I was thinking the aspect ratio might be the problem as well. However, when you DL a video or movie onto your tablet and play it, it uses the full screen, no problem.

This is not an aspect ratio problem
I have the same problem. When I set a streamed video on my S2 to full screen, the mirrored image on the TV has a black band all around it--top, bottom and both sides-- and is only about 3/4 of the TV screen size. The menu items on the TV that allow you to zoom or stretch an image are all disabled when the TV is in mirror mode. I can't find any settings on the S2 that allow you to modify the image that is being mirrored to the TV.
At the same time, a Galaxy phone can mirror a full-sized streamed video to the TV with no problem.
This is frustrating and potentially bad for the TV (elsewhere, the manual warns not to watch TV in 4:3 mode because the black stripes will "burn in").
Does anyone have a suggestion for how to address this?

Use a different device to screen mirror. As stated before, since the tab s2 is in 4:3 ratio, there is no way to force 16:9 via screen mirroring.
If you have the content on your device(not streaming), then your best bet is to use a DLNA app and send it that way.

I understand that the aspect ratio is different. I don't expect the image to reach out to all the edges. That is not the issue.

Give "SecondScreen" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farmerbb.secondscreen.free a try. It's a bit flaky though.
But, when it works, it does work.

From what i can read, he's sayign that he has black borders all four sides.
Surely even "aspect ratio" displaying should fill the image to top and bottom and let the sides go to the borders.
A wide screen TV would show a 4:3 image as top to bottom full with black bars left and right where the 4:3 didn't fit the 16:10
I'll take a guess and say it's a setting on his TV not right - maybe a zoom or auto-aspect not set, "wide", "full", etc.. (My Sony 55" used to do it with 4:3 old-style TV from video until i found the expansion setting.

Can i ask...
What device can you recommend for a non-Smart TV (2008 Sony 55") for receiving from the Galaxy S2 tablet?
I bought a "Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter" becasue i was told it;d work... but it doesn't.
There's nothing on the Galaxy Tab S2 to "cast" or "connect to" or whatever... it just doesn't see the MWDA.

Thanks for that - I was looking at the chromecast. £30 is a bit high though...
I found out why the microshaft one won;t work - it needs a firmware update before the Samsung Galaxy will "cast" to it.
BUT you need to be able to connect to it to do the firmware! - so i can't connect until i update the fW and I can't update the FW until i connect to it.
F**k Microsoft!!

You don't have a laptop or desktop running Windows that you can use to cast to it? I doesn't have to be the tablet to update the firmware.

Laptop, yes, but it's win 7 and 2012 date, no wifi direct (the intel drivers won;t install)
I;d need to buy a new lappy to get this updated! *grin* typical microshaft!
Out of interest:
What about casting/mirroring to an amazon firetv stick (it's cheaper than the chromecast and has more useful features)?

HDMI Output to 720p

Hi @all,
I've a problem with Chromecast. My setup is that I'm using an Onkyo receiver which has plenty of HDMI slots. Since I've no TV I've connected a monitor to the Onkyo. Unfortunately the monitor works at best in 720p (I've also attached a PS3 to the system where I'm also using 720p)...
So my question is, can I force Chromecast to output its HDMI signal in 720p. I don't have any image at the moment, with the exception during booting... (I see the Chrome Logo).
Any ideas????

720p is the highest and I believe the default that chromecast outputs at. You can change to 720p high or low bitrate, or 480p via the chrome browser extension.Sorry I was thinking about tab casting when I read the OP.

That's false. That setting is only for the resolution of the tab-casting. Not the output of the Chromecast. Chromecast outputs a 1080p signal. (https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=chromecast). I beleive it even upscales lower resolution content to 1080 but I can't confirm on my current setup.

Thank you so far.... yes, it is about the signal what's coming out of the chromecast not about casting! I definitely need 720p and I hope somebody can tell me how to force this device to do this.... Normally you could do this on any device (PCs, PS3, Xbox, Ouya...).
I'm really open to any advice.
Hi, I'm wondering if you found any answer to forcing(?) chromecast to a certain resolution. I'm wondering if the chipset inside the stick is capable of outputting anything other than 1080P? In my case I have to have 480P or 1080i (my TV is too old that it doesn't even accept 720P <LOL>). I know the Roku3 won't output anything lower than 720P so I'm wondering what the chip inside chromecast is capable & if there are ways to turn the switches on/off?
I'm still searching for a solution... none found yet.
What I figured out is that Chromecast can detect what the device can display at maximum. There is a standard to this...
But in my case (the AV receiver which accepts full resolution but the display not) I can't force it to do this... I submitted a feature request at Google help... I also read that people claim Google are very much interested in getting feedback... so I did what I can do.
So for now my Chromecast is just an Audio Stream adapter... but a quite good one so net completely useless for me
Thank you for the heads-up and I'm glad you are getting use out of it
Been looking around and found some info on the variant of SoC that is in the stick (from Marvell) as that thread suggested the info on Marvell site is thin and nothing about resolution. I sent an inquiry to their sales support but since I'm not looking to buy a lot of 10k of those SoC on the pallet so I'm not holding my breath for an answer. Also the thread said that it is not quite the same SoC so they were suspecting a neutered on customized for Google.

I have a similar problem, as I'm trying to run my Chromecast on a non-TV.
Short of Google giving options (which would be GREAT - most HDMI sources allow selecting what resolution gets sent), you could use an in-line EDID "injector" like Gefen HDMI Detective. They also have a DVI version of it called DVI Detective.
EDIT: Another option may be the Dr HDMI
In your case I would set the HDMI Detective to report that it only supports 480P and 720P resolutions and put it after your receiver (between receiver and monitor), so all your devices see proper progressive-only EDID.
Alternatively you could try to see if you can reprogram your monitor's EDID (via something like Powerstrip), though that's significantly more dangerous especially if you're a novice.

The Gefen is $129 and the Dr. HDMI is $399!
He'd be better off buying a new Monitor.
Dr. HDMI is only $99 (full boat HDfury3 is $399, Dr. HDMI is down past). But I agree, if money is to be thrown at the problem it's poetically better spent on a new monitor, unless you have something special.

OK, thanks for the correction. I clicked the buy now button and it showed up as $399, and I thought somethings wrong here.
OP, What monitor do you have? Does it not show any picture or is the picture quality just not good?
I recently did a search for best TV under $500 and their are some decent options for the money. My parents just picked up a 32" LCD TV from Costco on clearance for $180. It a Sceptre and 720p, but looks good and can handle a 1080p feed. It was on clearence, so might be hard to find at that price, but you can get a decent TV on the cheap with a little legwork.
Good luck.
FWIW as a test I have my Chromecast running to a Planar 1024x768 VGA monitor through a HDfury2.
The Planar says it's getting a 1280x720 signal, and I can tell from the green tint that it's receiving YPbPr (aka YUV).
So Chromecast definitely can output 720p if it thinks that's all the monitor can accept.
and I meant "probably" not "poetically" heh

When the screen says "starting...." I can see the picture well, I guess its on 720p, then it appears chromecast logo blurry and then a red noise digital noise screen.
I guess I need to change chromecast output resolution...

IIRC the boot screen is 480p.
This could be a failure of resolution negotiation (projector tells Chromecast it supports a resolution it can't handle) or missing/broken HDCP support on the projector.
Unfortunately you can't force Chromecast to a specific resolution so you'd have to control the reported supported resolutions with Dr. HDMI or similar that I mentioned earlier in the thread.
Is the digital noise blocky or more like fine random colored pixels?
-= this post enhanced with bonus mobile typos =-
The digital noise are red vertical lines at the screen, if I press the home button on my onkyo remote it changes to the casted image in 4 squares disorganized...
I find dr HDMI very expensive and I don´t think google will solve this issue. Maybe scene will do it eventually.
Well now I have a music streamer hehe, maybe I'll buy an fire tv or an apple tv...
Thanks a lot!

Interesting. Definitely sounds like your projector doesn't like what Chromecast is sending, maybe it doesn't like 1080p. Regardless, considering the cost of Chromecast I would just use it on another display or gift it to someone else and go with a more "full" player.

Possibility change Aspect Ratio?

Hey Chromecast Users,
is there any possibility to change the Aspect Ratio (and with it resolution of chromecast) from 16:9 to 4:3?
Got a 4:3 TFT Monitor and want to use it on, resolution is 1280x1024...
I also own a 16:9 monitor, but I want to use the 4:3 instead of the 16:9.

As far as I know, Chromecast only like 16:9 resolutions.
Can you change your monitor settings to display 1280x720 (720p) letterboxed?
Otherwise you would need some sort of scaler, and that's going to cost more than the Chromecast itself.
No i did not find any method to do this on my TFT LCD
I also know those boxes... But a 24 inch monitor with HDMI is much cheeper
No possibilities with rooted Cast?

How are you even plugging the CCast into an SD monitor?
usually the adapter used to connect to SD is what does the conversion for you...
And those converters are usually as expensive as a new monitor is.
I changed the signal from HDMI to VGA with this one (cant post because new member, just look on amazon for "HDMI Female to VGA"... Looks similiar to an USB Stick
But it does not convert any signal to any aspect ratio.
The monitor is a "Fujitsu L7ZA", i got this one just because a friend want to dump it, so i said i would take it before he put it into trash.... And then i bought the Chromecast, because i thought it might would be funny, but if it does not work with the 4:3 its bad :/
Maybe Google brings an update? I would appreciate!
I did some digging and it seems your Fujitsu L7ZA may be same/related to ScenicView A17-2 based on this (far from authoritative). If that's correct, I looked up the manual and unfortunately there seems to be no vertical size (usually V-SIZ) control.
Don't get me wrong, I'm like you - one of my Chromecasts is connected to a SD TV through HDMI-VGA converter and downscaler, but I'm currently letting the downscaler (and my TiVo) do the aspect ratio conversion as my TV model doesn't have the "easy" vertical compression option. But doubtful that Google will update for 4:3 users like us as very few non-16:9 televisions have HDMI input, and Chromecast isn't aimed at usage on computer monitors (or HDMI->VGA conversion, for that matter).
What you really need is a Scan Converter similar to what we use when we want to put an old VGA computer onto a Standard Def screen.
And by the time you bought that you could get a good 24" HDMI monitor instead.
I just bought Mom (for Mother's Day) an old Dell 24" for $149 (Tiger Direct) although it doesn't have speakers built in it does have a connector to attach speakers to that will pass the HDMI Audio.
A decent scan converter can go for $200.
It's really the best option because Google will never make a setting for the CCast that supports SD...
Makes no sense for an HDMI Dongle...

Disappointed with S2 Tab TV Out/MHL performance -can anyone help?

So I got a Galaxy S2 tab for Christmas and while it's pretty good on thing has been a huge letdown. One of the main things I wanted from it was to be able to connect it to the TV via a cable to watch films and TV shows .However with the tablet it will display the screen on the TV for me but the picture is small in the middle of the TV taking up around only 40% of the screen in total, the rest of it is a black box surrounding the picture.
I've tried messing with the display and aspect ratio on the TV but nothing gets it quite right. I've used a succession of Samsung phones with cables over the years and never have had a single problem, it's usually perfect.
Has anyone any insights into what might help or is this just not the right tablet when it comes to watching on the TV?
Different aspect ratios.
For the price of a chromecast nowadays it's pointless messing around with cables. The picture is not only superior but no need to have the screen on either.

Thank you for replying Ashyx. Is there nothing I can do then as far as the cable goes?
I have a Chromecast but I don't find support for quite a lot of apps I want to use, even on the apps that do support it they won't cast recent screenings, just older episodes . The cast screen option also suffers from the aspect ratio problem so that doesn't help.

Sorry,I wasn't clear. I meant on several of the apps I use only offer chromecast support for older shows and older episodes but not recent ones. They all play fine on the tablet though. I like to use the cable for those. That's why I find the chromecast doesn't rival the cable for me so I'd love to fix the issue if possible.

Mostly I'd like to watch shows from apps that are available in my home country or Ireland like RTE player. It's a tv show player app but doesn't have chromecast support. Also Channel 4 in the UK have an app called All 4 , while they have some content available for casting to chromecast the newer shows can only be watched within the app with no casting. They have hdmi blocked but I found an xposed module for getting around that.
If you've any insights or know anyway around these kind of problems I'd be very grateful. I'm grateful for your help so far too.

HDMI settings

Is there any way to change the default HDMI settings in the S2? I have two 40" monitors and they each react differently when I try to connect the S2. On one, the monitor simply say the "format isn't supported". On the other, it connects but when I try to run Hulu, everything appears normal until the movies actually starts to stream. Then I get the "unsupported format" message. Both monitors are limited to 720p.
Have you tried a different player such as Mxplayer.

Will MxPlayer mirror my S2 of my 40" TV? So that I can run apps such as Nascar's Raceview on my big screen? I'm not really interested in a "video player". I have that on my Linux and Windows boxes.
Chromecast
What with the problems I'm having with my HDMI connections, I broke down and bought a Chromecast device. The Screen Cast option works on both my 710 and 810, but they both have the same poor quality as the HDMI connection. It has good quality when casting from apps such as Hulu and Netflix, but the screen mirroring with Screen Cast is lousy.
I have two under $80 devices that both display full screen and with much better picture quality than these two highend S2 devices. Samsung has really dropped the ball with this issue. There should be a way to change the display settings to fix this, but I can't find any.
I'm confused are you talking about gaming or watching movies?
Chromecast should mirror your device at 1080p as far as I'm aware.
There is an app called Second screen that allows you to change the resolution when casting to chromecast or other devices, however it requires root.

How do I get Netflix to Display over Miracast Connection?

Hey Guys,
I've been using a 256GB Exynos Note 8 as my first ever Samsung Smartphone for almost a year now, and I've been really loving the extremely versatile featureset it packs. It has hands down been the most useful Smartphone I've ever had after over half a decade of jailbroken iPhones and just switching to Android on a OnePlus One back in 2014. So much so, I've literally been using it as a Pocket PC for most of my computing needs, relying less and less on my Surface Pro 2.
However, there has been one pet peve that just keeps getting in the way of me enjoying my Note 8 to the fullest; whenever I try to miracast Netflix running on my Note 8 to my Microsoft Wireless Display Adaptor connected to a big screen (be it in my living room, bed room, or a hotel room), I only get audio and subtitles, no video Everything else -- including presentations, games and YouTube -- stream smoothly and very reliably from my Note 8 to whatever big screen I want, way better than even my Surface Pro 2 (1st party hardware). However, I just can't get Netflix to stream over miracast from my Note 8. Oddly enough, it works from my Surface Pro 2 with the latest Netflix app from the Microsoft Store.
Any genius out there have some suggestions on how to get Netflix working over miracast? I don't want them chromecast as they require their own internet connection instead of simply functioning via WiFi direct. Thanks in advance.
Try loading Netflix, then only starting the miracast?
Are you plugging this adapter into a TV at a hotel etc? Or is it your home TV?
The casting is something Samsung needs to fix its quite fiddly. If I'm casting to a TV I use Smart Things.
I think you should be running the app you're trying to cast from first. Then when you click the option it should recognise your MWDA.
I used to use my Surface Tablet to cast Netflix and it was a nuisance, so I gave up and plugged it directly into the TV and used a Bluetooth mouse.

Sorry for the very late feedback, for some reason never saw a notification in the XDA Labs app despite responses to my thread.
I just attempted this but all it does is still show a black screen with audio over Miracast, while the video appears on my Note 8's screen.

I tried it both at a camp/hotel and at home. Doesn't matter which TV I'm plugging it into, it's still the same end result; my Note 8 reliably connects over Miracast to it, but Netflix refuses to display.

If I'm casting to a TV I use Smart Things.

Hmm, isn't that using Chromecast though? My Wireless Display Adapter doesn't show up when I attempt to add a device in SmartThings.

I think you should be running the app you're trying to cast from first. Then when you click the option it should recognise your MWDA.

I attempted that, and as stated above, still the same end result.
Any other suggestions on getting Netflix to work over Miracast? Thanks in advance.

The problem might be the MWDA. I never used one, I used a 3rd party display port to HDMI cable when connecting my Surface to a TV.
I cast apps from my Note 8 to my TV using Smartthings app. Or if you click the button which says 'button order' for your notification shade, there should be one that says 'smart view' I have successfully cast Netflix on my phone to my TV this way.

The MWDA works perfect and reliably for ANYTHING else, besides Netflix. SmartThings is casting via Chromecast in your Smart TV, that's why it works with Netflix.

That's exactly how I cast from my Note 8's screen to the MWDA, again, it works reliably with everything else but Netflix. The difference is it's using the Miracast protocol in the case of my MWDA, whereas the one to your Smart TV is using the Chromecast protocol (SmartView supports both).
Anyone else have any suggestions on getting Netflix to work over Miracast?
