Hi everyone. I just joined this forum and I am hoping to get some help from some wise jailbreaker out there..
I bought my G1 from T-Mobile a couple of weeks ago with the intent to jailbreak it and use it as a modem for my laptop. I finally got started on the project and I was stonewalled right from the get-go. Neither the original SD card in the phone nor my new 8GB SD card can be seen by either one of my computers. My desktop is running Windows XP Pro and my laptop is running Vista Home Premium. Neither one will see the SD card no matter what I do. The card does not show up in "My Computer" on either one of the systems, but shows up as "Drive J" in both of them under "Drive Mangement". But it says there is "No Media", so therefor nothing to format.
Since I can't even format the card, I am bogged down from the start. I am hoping someone out there can tell me what to do in order to jailbreak this phone, since that was the only reason I got it. I was perfectly happy with my HP6550 iPAQ otherwise...
Has anyone out there had the same problem?
have u tried formating the card to fat32?
You could try a sd reader. When you pluggin the phone in did you make sure to pull down the notification bar and click the usb thing and hit "Mount"?
Try going into settings, sdcard and storage and format the card that way. If not it sounds like a windows driver issue, you might want to try a card reader, or download and burn a live cd of linux something like ubuntu which will have no problem reading the android phone. You could also use hp as a card reader if it supports micro sdcards
You could just download the files you need through the internet on your phone also, I do all my flashing, downloading and modifing right on my g1, download something like linda or astro file manager from the market so that you can actually download the files
Thanks guys.
pistol4413: That is what I am trying to do according to instructions. But without the card beeing seen by Windows, it is sort of hard to format it...
crpercodani: Thanks for the tip. I will try a separate card reader. And there was no need to hit "mount". It all happened automatically and the phone said the card was mounted. Well, not in those words but it said the card was connected. I tried to unmount and remount again. Didn't do anything.
gridlock32404: I tried that (formatting in the phone). It did nothing. I will try a separate reader. The HP doesn't support micro SD, only mini and standard.
And I can't believe it would be a Windows driver issue both in my XP Pro system and Vista Premium...?
Provided I get this solve first of course, I am also curious if you might have detailed, reliable instructions on how to go through the whole root thing and getting the phone rooted and setup to provide a wireless network for my laptop? Right now I am following instructions from Anthony Moreno on YouTube. He has a few instructional videos on there that seem to make sense. But if any of you know of some other source for instructions, please let me know. I'd appreciate any help I can get to make this a smooth project and not a major headache...
There are many detailed posts and stickys, on this q and a there is a thread for the one click that is really good, it is written by david and is very good instructions
Thanks for the mention gridlock32404. I have a detailed guide in my sig for the one click method. Or if you search for root/hack g1 then there is a good guide that i used to root my phone back in the day. If you use my method and encounter any problems pm me because i will see that faster than a post in the thread also if you do it and go with the rom in the guide (latest cyanogen rom) it comes with a tether app to do exactly what want (at least i think it does)
They are good instructions david and I think that it is warranted to get sticky since most of the new g1 users are using it, I would perfer them to do the old fashioned way so they learn more about what they are doing but the one click is bringing a lot of new users to rooting since it is less scary

I completely agree. People should root their phones the long way first but one click is good for people that know what they are doing
I got 2 guys that work at my local tmobile that asked me if next time I come pay my bill if I could root their phones for them so I might just give that one click a try. I got a ? For you on that regard, can I just pop my sdcard in there phones and set them up that way and when I flash the new rom I can put back in their card without any damge to mine when I put in back in my phone

As long as you power your phone down first i can't see any why your sdcard would get damaged.
That's what I thought, so I guess I will do that tomorrow then or monday
You should tell them you will partition their sdcards and install the new spl, if they leave a mytouch on the table and look away lol.
It's a mytouch and a g1. The g1 guy wants hero so I would set that all up for him. Why do you say that about the mytouch, it's gonna be my first go on that so I am unsure

The mytouch was a joke payment method. To do one click root on the mytouch make sure you put the 1.33.2005 spl on it, since any spl for the g1 (hard or eng) will brick it. Also you might want to get the amon_ra recovery image for the mytouch
Yeah I was planning to put the amon's recovery on their since they can't use the recovery console anyway, I was aware of the spl difference though so I was good on that, I did read up alittle on it
i along with several other noobs would like to try the newest roms but, everything is lzx. through sd card i have reformatted and everything else one would need to do. is it to much to ask to get some .nbh files upload if it is too much work just let me know i will understand just want to try out all these new rom that are helping keep this wing alive...... p.s that cab. file fix for opera mobile has that worked for anyone? it didnt for me... thanks in advance
Okay, so what are you saying? You formatted your SD card and it doesn't work or something? Did you format it as FAT32 under Windows? Did you rename the file to HERAIMG.nbh? Did you press and hold the camera button? Im thinking that you didn't.
If you're trying to flash through sd, and it's not working, you either missed something or did something wrong, period.
LOL
I can;t take you seriously with the smoking obama
You Must Be HardSPL First! See Here
1. Download the ROM you want to Flash
2. Rename the _______.nbh to HERAIMG.nbh ( ____ being whatever it was named first )
3. Format your sd card in FAT32 ( can't be sdhc, smaller cards work better )
- you can format your sd with a card reader on your computer
- or you can find resco explorer and format it on your phone
- if either doesn't work skip this step and see what happens
4. Place the HERAIMG.nbh onto your hopefully reformatted sd card. ( keep it in the root directory don't put it in a folder)
5. Make sure your phone is off and your sd card is in
6. Press and hold the power button and while holding it press and hold the camera button
7. When asked to press a button press down on the volume strip.
8. you'll get a progress bar leave it alone until there's only a gradient screen ( around 5min) then restart.
If for some reason this doesn't work, start back at step one and try again.
If for some reason the second time doesn't work get a cheap sd card and try with that one.

State and Market, that's a classy part of town lol. Rents cheap though. Yeah not much to do here, at least I got xda
What do you mean by get internet through activesync? Like still be able to connect to edge on your phone or do you mean internet sharing or something?
the internet pass through, where you connect to your computer with activesync and your phone shares the computers internet connection.

using the phones internet on your computer right?
if thats the case you want "internet sharing" you can get it somewheres here or thewingster.com
i use internet sharing on my comp from time to time, but tmobiles GPRS is just sooo slow, if you really need internet go for it
Yeah it's like dial-up slow, but it does work in a pinch. But if you're wanting to use your PC's internet connection for your phone, I couldn't find much. There's something like that for Symbian, but not really windows mobile.

I blame the SD card and the education system... SD card could not be hard spl worthy or something, try a different card I say 2 gb or less, SDHC cards don't work for some reason

Yeah definitely 2GB OR LESS, NOT SDHC. Everyone that puts up directions to flash seems to keep forgetting to note that part.
the only thing that i havent tried nor have i seen anything about is the step... to turn phone off, then hold power botton while pressing camera botton.i will try that.. thanks for the info i didnt mean to come off like a ass..my bad
hey guys i covered that in my steps give me some credit.
and about the passthrough. i have a dash and when you connect to the computer my dash uses my computers internet, im wondering why i can;t do that with my wing?
the thing is i have a 2g sd card now i have heard of the term "partioning" a portion of your sd card for flashing.does anyone have steps for it? thats what i might need and if that doesnt work i'll just wait for the next signed_ruu file through active sync.
You can try to partition your SD and have part of it FAT or NTFS and the other FAT32 for flashing purposes, but I would not recommend it. Just do this, connect your SD card to your PC some way, copy everything on it to your desktop, then format the card to FAT32 and install as normal. If you partition your card I do not know wether the bootloader of the phone is smart enough to search for a FAT32 partition or if it expects the entire sd:/ disk to be FAT32.
I've never tried partitioning. I always use a 2gb Kingston and format the entire card to FAT32, and I've never had any issues flashing. That is the method I recommend.
Ok so I have my Nook Color and I have my shiney new class 4 sd card.
I have managed to install Honeycomb on said SD card. I even manged to get ADB setup and installed the marketplace and what not.
What I do not have is left over space on the card. I did use the image from this link:
***.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-android-3-0-honeycomb-and-market-on-nook-color/
[EDIT: Nice spam filter. Try this.]
Since the image is 4GB in size, I was under the impression I would have roughly 12GB free on my SD card. I do not. If I go to Settings > Storage it shows the SD card as having a total size of 1.25GB and 1.14GB free. It also shows the internal storage as having a total size of 656MB and 555MB free space.
Ok I could have sworn the EMMC (or internal storage) was 5GB and add in my 16GB of SD should give me 21GB of space +/- space of the OS and apps.
So where the frell is my 12GB of space at?
Also when I plug the nook into my PC running Windows 7 64-Bit I get 3 removable drives that are greyed out and unusable. Loverly. The heck? At the very least the internal EMMC should be showing up.
Notes:
Yes I did install the USB driver
From what I understand this version of HC is not rooted but like your intro video says, I am a newb so what the frell do I know?
What I want:
To be able to plug my NC into the PC and have access to the EMMC (where a lot of my files are now) and access to remaining 12GB or so of space on the NC itself.
History of me and the NC:
I have previously installed CM7 on a different SD card and it was alright. I didn't like it because I couldnt move icons around on the desktop in an intuitive manner. (i.e., grab and drop) and it felt too much like a hacked up phone OS instead of pure android. I want pure android on my NC.
I did my research before I purchased the NC and IMO, it is the best value for the $$$ in terms of an Android tablet. I don't mind putting in some hours in front of the command line (I started working with computers when DOS 5 was released, so lets compare the color of our beards, eh?) and am totally comfortable in various OS's and speak *NIX fluently.
Got an answer that you think is gonna work? Or should I just wait for someone else to post a different Honeycomb image for the NC, or is there one out there that simply works?
Over the last few months I have spent many hours reading these and various other forums (B&N Forums, Android Forums) to get ready to hack my Nook and I would love to contribute in some small (or not so small) manner however being married with 2 kids working 50+ hours a week puts a damper on my "fun time" (i.e. hackery).
Thanks in advance for not only reading all this, but for any help / support that is offered.
D'Oh!
Shoulda watched the video twice. Posted in wrong sub-forum.
Shoulda been in the Q&A area.
Crap.
Maybe there is a mod out there willing to move it.
Think I may have found whats up.
I pulled the SD card and stuck it back in my laptop to take a look-see at the partitions. Lo and behold there is a 12.5GB un-partitioned space.
So now I am going to create a new partition and then stick it in the nook and boot from it. Hopefully once I hook it up to USB, it will be able to mount as volume for file transfer. It would suck to have to poweroff the nook and pull the card every time I wanted to add some files to it.
No luck. Windows will not recognize the partition I created.
I.e., I am unable to assign a drive letter even though it is a logical partition.
Off to google stuff again.
Well I gave up on this.
However I am willing to admit when I am wrong. I am now quitw happily running the latest stable build of CM7 and its running nicely. Got a few more tweaks to do before I arrive at what I had pictured in my head for my ultimate nook.
I just wanted to report in and give a status update although I am kinda puzzled by the lack of responses. Are the majority of you running froyo and waiting for a better version of honeycomb to be released?
Anyway cheers and happy hacking.
Most of us are (I think) running CM7 (gingerbread). When the HC sources are released, I expect we'll be running CM8 within weeks.
Windoze has real troubles with partitioned SDs, especially in built-in readers, either a case of "we know better" or one of those simplifying assumptions that gets in the way. An external reader (looks more like a generic USB drive) might fare better. I'm a Linux guy, so I'm all set. Most Windoze systems don't have drivers for ext filesystems, so they're unusable (/system and /data).
Image-copying always sets the partitions and filesystems until you re-partition like you did. Good detective work there.
Also, lots of us have lives and aren't in this forum full-time. I tend to ignore HC posts when I don't have infinite time to mess around.

Delete the partition you created... extend the last partition on the SD... the nook can now use all of it when running off SD and the remaining portion of partition 1 when booting stock.
So come to find out that the main holdup woith getting honeycomb going for the nc community is a lack of source code. Until such time as that is made available I can wait.
Now then, here is where I will eat my own hat. I reloaded the latest stable version of CM7 on my nc and I am really impressed with it. Last time I tried it woas a few months ago and it was a dissapointment for me. However between then and now I have learned a lot more about Android in general and the nook. This is my first android device.
FWIW Linux is my mainOS and has been for years. I was in windows so I could satisfy a craving of mine. You see, I am a WoW player. While the game runs ok in Wine, it runs far far better natively, especially for raiding. So I use linux for work and most other functions, i use windows for games.
So anyway I am now very comfortable in my CM7 setup and will continue to work witu it and learn more as time goes by.
Hello, I can't seem to find anything related to this on google or your wonderfull website ( thanks to you folks i was able to root my htc desire and install cyanogenmod, as well as unlock it from the network), any way to the point, I switched network providers because ive had it with telus, long story short, i went to bell and had to get a new phone, so i tried this htc hd7, n i kick myself in the teeth, but im stuck with it now... n now that i can use my desire on any network, i popped my bell sim in and am using that, so, i want to use the 16 gb class 4 sandisk sd card out of the hd7 in my htc desire, windows doesnt recognize it, nor does kubuntu, and nor does the format utility windows comes with, the format fails... and of course the phone wont read it or format it through recovery or in OS, ive also tried a program called low level format tool, it sees it, but results in multiple errors when formatting, any thoughts?
you need a Nokia phone to format it. The SD card is locked.
Does it need to be a specific model? The only nokia device i have is an air card for my laptop and theres no memory card settings, i think i have a couple buddies that own nokia phones though, damn windows phail 7

You must have not looked on Google very hard:
"format WP7 SD card"
Actually, thats the first thing i searched, which is also how i discovered the low level format utility, you can have absolute faith i've searched anything i could think of and explored multiple options that i could think of, including a kodak easy share c183 (fairly new digital camera) and multiple sd card recovery applications designed for digital cameras, ive tried using linux and both windows/linux OS disks, im thinking, now that the bootloader has been exploited for the the hd7, if i can port either kubuntu mobile or some third party android build to it, i would gain access to the card, then mess around with that, but theres gotta be some way i can format this bugger. ive also come across the thread that includes using the nokia phone, but i dont have one. this is the only other thing i could find besides the llft, is there anyone else out there that has wanted to use there 16 gigger out of the hd7 for some other device after upgrading to a 32gb card? i have skimmed these forums as well and turned up nothing
well i just came across this post and aim on the same boat... i have 4 16g and going crazy i will hate to see this 4 16 sd go to trash... just cause mocosoft have play bad with us.....
ps just like guitarjunkie i have try all i can think-off
well im going to render this question unasnwerable i think for the time being, until we can find an application that works, if there wll ever be such a time, i will keep posted if i find one, thank you almostinsane for your time and input about the nokia phone, and to my boys from microsoft, blast you all, creators of wp7 to eternal damnation! @#$%&*(random curse words) power to the linux community!
Hmmm my friend formatted his memory, but no longer has the software that he did that with... =\
Try this:
http://www.pendriveapps.com/format-fat32-larger-than-32gb/
If it failed try:
http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/
Try the whole re-initialization thing...
If both failed, try to find something else which can destroy the partition table for the memory, then rebuild it using Disk Manager.

The idea is the same.
Use the disassembly/assembly guides available to upgrade the uSD card to 32GB, but just switch the uSD out for the one you want to use out of your old phone.
Lane Anderson: FAIL!!!!
You can't use your old card because it's locked.
The password was applied to it by the OS, your only choice is to format it with a nokia device and then use any software that can recover from sd cards, the password is not a hardware lock, just software lock.
The card has a file system similar(almost) to FAT, so maybe you can get all back, BUT you'll have to sort the names because of the structure used by the WP7.
Good Luck!
^^^ And there you have it. Sorry, bud.
