TWRP on Galaxy s I9000 ? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would install KITKAT on my Galaxy S i9000 using the TWRP recovery.
In the list of devices on which you can mount the TWRP not indicated the Galaxy S I9000.
It 'an error or you can not?

1. download http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644240
2. download CodeROM-5.1.1-20150825-galaxysmtd
3. extract boot.img and rename it to zImage
4. run tar.bat
Result attached for convenience. All credits go to the devs!

I will choose the ROM later.
Now I have already choosed the procedure to save EFS files.
Now I'm choosing what type of recovery use.
I repeat: I would use TWRP but my smartphone does not appear in the list of supported devices.
On the contrary, in all the guides TWRP is indicated as an alternative to CWR.

Original TWRP is not available for i9000.
BUT: The CodeROM-Team managed to make it running onto i9000. Therefore, you need to extract TWRP from their ROM, convert it to an Imagefile and upload it with ODIN. This works!

Hello, I would like to also do this as stated in the OP. The image in the kernel.tar, that's what I have to flash the i9000 with Odin? Do I have twrp recovery then in the i9000?

I downloaded the attached kernel attachment and flashed it with Odin. After doing this, the phone booted up in TWRP 2.8.7.0, but deleted the stock ROM. That's not all, I cannot do anything anymore with the phone, because the phone gives error with every ROM I try to install: "Unable to mount '/system'" and "Unable to mount '/data'". The phone does not boot in download mode either.
The big question is now, how to solve these errors? Can anyone help?

It seems that this Recovery with CWM does not support any other ROMs than CodeROM . Had the same problem lately, but in my case I expected it to be due to the fact that i changed the Filesystem of /system and /data to F2FS, but apparently that was not the main cause. (By the way- don't do that. It took me 2 days to get it back to EXT again).
The only way to solve it was to flash a complete Stock ROM with ODIN (I had to do it twice until everything was working again), using the files you'll find in the Stock-Rom-DB. I used this ones (sorry, no link atm, but you'll find it easily):
CSC_OXXJVC.tar.md5 3'778'609 20.04.2012 23:42 -a--
PDA_XWJW5_Sbl.tar.md5 285'562'932 20.04.2012 23:40 -a--
PHONE_XXJW4.tar.md5 12'585'010 27.04.2012 16:17 -a--
s1_odin_20100512.pit 1'744 06.08.2010 16:56 -a--
Luckily this did not affectet the area where the phones special data is located (IMEI and so on, donnot remeber the correct name for that).
I'm now back onto latest official CM10, because newer releases had quite a few issues, especialy bad connectivity (dont know why). With android 4.4.4 everything is working perfectly again.
Hope that helps to fix the problems my file did!

> The phone does not boot in download mode either
Did not see that before. I never had such an issue. Try it again, but do not push the power button more than 10 seconds, else the phone reboots again and again.
Sometimes, Download mode works even thought you cannot see anything on screen. try to connect the device to your PC and launch ODIN, you'll see if it can connect.

Tnx for your reply Fragone. It took me a while, had to wait on a USB jig for me to get the phone in download mode.
Unfortunately I did format to f2fs, how did you get back to ext? As for the other files, I did get my hands on an original rom, but I have to go look for the files you mentioned and try it with those, as the stock rom does not boot either. If you have the links, I'd be much abliged. Right now I go to sleep, just got home from the graveyard shift.

So someone finally returned my i9000 to me after a few years of use and I'm looking to put a current ROM on it so I can use it as a test phone. I keep seeing TWRP as the custom recovery used for the new ROMs. And yet like umberto, I've found there's no official custom TWRP for this phone. I'm pretty familiar with using TWRP on all my other devices.
So back to the original question of this thread - is there a way to get TWRP on the phone? It looks like Fragone's suggestion isn't the right way to go? The only thing I could find in my thread searches was a suggestion to use Mackay's ROM to get 2.8.1.0 and then (theoretically) it's on there so you could move to other ROMs. Any help?
D

@umberto santulli @dnaod
On the i9000, kernel & recovery share the same image, thus the recovery cannot be flashed separately. Therefore there is no i9000 on the TWRP site.
Yes, there are several kernels that feature TWRP, but you must be careful: kernel must be compatible with the ROM, otherwise, bootloop is result.

Thanks for this warning. I've flashed MacKay's ROM and am playing with it right now. I was planning on flashing OmniROM later using this same TWRP but I'm guessing I should read quite a bit more carefully with every ROM to see if they're compatible.

There should be no problem to change the ROM. Just mind that the kernel & recovery share the image. I was using Omni 4.4.4 by kasper_h and Mackay kernel with TWRP

I added the zip to the pda area and flash Odin v3.07
I installed the image with ADB.
put the recovery image on the sdcard mount or ext sdcard mount
ADB to the note 8.0
su to root
go to your image directory
dd if=xxx.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6
switch back to the note and reboot directly to recovery (i used goomanager)
it does boot the first time - but it is jittery and in landscape mode.
after the first system boot- the device wipes it and goes back to stock recovery.
I have seen this with other stock android devices- sometimes there
is a script that gets triggered on boot to remove any custom recoveries.
I did clear the recovery check from CWM - but it was hard to see because of the
landscape mode and the screen jumping around.
It looks like the full backup is working- now I wonder what ROM will be close enough
to the 8.0 to try flashing.

Found this Q&A in the Note 10.1 rooting guide in RootGalaxyNote.com:
Q: I don’t see ClockworkMod Recovery when I enter recovery, I see stock Android recovery.
A: With newer software updates, you may be encountering this error because it will overwrite ClockworkMod Recovery upon reboot. To get around this, simply boot into ClockworkMod Recovery right after flashing in ODIN. You can set auto-reboot off in ODIN then when done, just hold down Power and Volume Down straight to bootloader menu.
This may have been the problem.
To get it to stop resetting to stock recovery every time you reboot, under /system, there is a file named "recovery-from-boot.p". Rename it to .bak or whatever. That file is typically the culprit for custom recoveries not 'sticking'.
Also, we don't have a factory image yet, do we? I'm hesitant to mess too much with this stuff until we have a way to Odin ourselves out of a softbrick.

Also, to the OP, thanks for doing this. I'm pretty familiar with adb if you'd like to do TWRP. Would love to have it instead of CWM!

Mark.
Attached is a tar of recovery.log pulled with ADB while booted to CWM.
The display goes to landscape on boot - and the fonts seem extra large.
When the vol up/down navigates the screen jumps and you can't see the
highlighted option.
It is usable with trial and error if you know the order of the CWM menus and
use the vol up/down and power to navigate.

Only thing I can judge by that are the missing mount types for the recovery.fstab. Ill fix that now. But someone, try keeping the device physically portrait and see if cwm works properly then, if not then physically landscape.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P.S try using touch input, its a touch recovery, or so I built it
^thats why fonts are large
^thats why there are no indicators
I tried changing orientation before boot - it always goes to landscape.
I attached 2 images - one is the display after the first CWM boot.
The second is after pressing Vol Up to navigate to the 2nd menu option.
I have seen jumpy CWM presentation like this on some smaller screens like the
Sony Xperia 2011/2012 phones.

You should try to put your Note in download mode and flash a stock rom with Odin.
You must flash the PIT file to repartition your phone's storage, chose the right one (16 or 32 Gb).
I am almost sure that your phone is soft bricked and it is recoverable.
If it don't work, thant mean that your have bad blocks in your phone's storage. Have you wiped your note while under ICS android ?
what rom were you on? if JB, try a factory reset.

I currently have an imei but it is some random number starting with "004999" and I do get signals but cant make a call .. Do you know if there is some hope for me or not .. and what else I can try.
This is the developer imei. You may be able to make calls of you try a GB rom. Or there is one rom by ThaiDai which had some work around built into it. I don't know which one.
Else the site I mentioned earlier has contact info of cvxcvx. He can fix your phone remotely but by charging about 10 euros.
Need help for a bricked N7000
Hi guys,Im a complete newbie to the whole custom rom scenario. Yet, after being fed up of touchwiz on my N7000 i decided i wanted to taste some KitKat on my phone. After seeing many videos with positive reviews I thought it would be a rather easy process. But somehow I seem to have made a mistake and now my phone is stuck on Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 logo. I cant get into recovery mode as suggested on most places. As of now I only have access to the download mode but dont know what to do with it.
Here's what I tried doing :
1) I was on stock OS, and these are my specifics : Galaxy Note N-7000 running JB 4.1.2
Baseband version : N7000DDLS6
Kernel version: 3.3.31-906407
BUild number:JZO54K.N7000DDLSC
2) As I was following the procedure from Omnirom's official website, I first rooted my phone using Framaroot's single click root app. This gave me SuperSU app.
3) Then I tried installing TWRP recovery (recommended by Omni) but they dont support the N7000. I read a few other tutorials where it was stated the CWM recovery and that too Philz CWM recovery is the best to go with. Apparently it is just stock kernel with CWM recovery. Since the latest one(philz_touch_6.07.9-n7000) was not being installed, I installed the one before that which worked (PhilZ-cwm6-DDLSC-ODD-5.11.2-signed).
4) I even installed the ROM Manager as per the tutorial. However, uptil now I could access recovery mode ( Vol UP+Home+Power) and i saw the touch enabled philz recovery mode once. Then i did system reboot.
5)After reboot, this is where I did a mistake in my opinion. I opened ROM Manger and clicked on "open in recovery mode" option. Since then the phone is stuck on the Galaxy Note N7000 logo. Please help me revive the phone. Thanks in advance. Again, Im doing this for the first time and most terms are new to me. So please explain the procedure as other tutorials are not very clear.
You missed on reading the most important instructions.
Rom manager will not work with note. Recovery is built into the kernel on note and not as a separate partition.
Try harder to get into recovery mode. If you still can't, get the ddlsc Philz kernel tar version. Flash it using Odin. Then power off the device and boot into recovery. Then flash raw kernel. Reboot recovery. Flash omni and other required zips.

Solution for issues booting MJA

You can get the latest tar file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522810 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258107. These instructions should not be necessary anymore. Please download the latest tar file from the links above and use Odin to flash them in download mode
This is for those who are getting contact boot loops on the Galaxy S4 logo
For those who are having a constant boot loop or stuck on the Galaxy S4 screen we (omariscal1019 and I) found a solution. After upgrading to MJA I started to try to get root working and ended up changing something that I shouldn't since it started to boot loop and get stuck on the Galaxy S4 logo.
I thought all was lost and put OctOS for now, waiting for the MJA tar to get posted, but omariscal1019 helped me out made a custom backup with Philz's Recovery in the TWRP format. I was able to successfully boot after restoring boot and system and then wiping data/cache (factory data reset). Here are the files omariscal1019 shared with me and we would like to share with the others in the same situation. I'll try to get more details in a bit up

Make sure to flash with Odin after getting your system to boot properly.
NOTE: This is for only those who can flash Phil'z recovery with Odin and successfully boot into that recovery to restore these backups. Use at your own risk and listen to what others say. We have confirmed that the system/boot works, but only by following the directions below. The modem and radio files are yet to be determined if they work...
Download the files and place them in TWRP/BACKUPS/110c8480 (not sure on the last folder name, that is what was in my TWRP backups folder). Inside that one (110c8480) place the 2013-10-31.21.01.21_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA folder. So in the end you should have the following path: TWRP/BACKUPS/110c8480/2013-10-31.21.01.21_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA.
One other reason on wanting to restore this system partition is this backup was taken after it was rooted. So after restoring this backup you will have a working root with no Knox messages Let me know if you have issues or questions
I just wanted to say a big thanks to omariscal1019, reverepats, and KelevrA_8. omariscal1019 for getting my the files to fix my phone, reverepats for letting us use some of his hosted space, and KelevrA_8 for finding the fix for the sound issues. Make sure you send your thanks to them.
Detailed Instructions
TWRP Format System/Boot Restore
Use Odin and flash Phil'z Recovery at http://d-h.st/users/philz_touch/?fld_id=18376#files
I used philz_touch_5.18.2-jfltespr.tar.md5
Download the files listed above (I'm uploading the zip to a hosting site now)
Boot into Recovery (Power + Volume Up)
Select Backup and Restore
Select Custom Backup and Restore
Select TWRP Backup & Restore
Select Restore from TWRP Format
Uncheck all boxes except for boot (boot should only have the x)
Select Start Custom Restore Job
Select which storage place you put the folder (internal is sdcard and external_sd is sdcard1)
Select 110c8480/2013-10-31.21.01.21_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA (if you can't find it in Philz recovery try moving the folder with the date to a differnet folder where your typical recovery backups go)
Select boot.emmc.win
After it restores boot it will take you back to the list of partitions. Deselect boot and select system, and this time select system.ext4.win000
Then after that go to the main menu by hitting back a few times and select Wipe Data/Factory Reset and then reboot the device
Fix Sound Issue after going to MJA
Use Odin and flash the MJA Kernel which is in the sound issue fix above
Reboot and profit
Thank you so much!!!

Here is a backup of the radio/modem files. I used Phil'z but I didn't do a TWRP backup this time I did a normal custom backup. I also did another one in the twrp format and I am uploading it now as well:
http://www.fileswap.com/dl/1WxPRFZFiP/2013-11-01.12.51.47_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA.zip.html
Here is the TWRP version: http://www.fileswap.com/dl/Gchsi8LKq6/2013-11-01.MJA.modem-radio-TWRP.zip.html and a better file name for the other: http://www.fileswap.com/dl/bTakvZPpJ/2013-11-01.MJA.modem-radio-CWM.zip.html
This didn't fix me up. I tried anyway just to make sure but I can't get into recovery so that isn't an option for me.
I've updated the links on the first post, and added modem and radio zips
So if i'm understanding correctly this is a work-around for rooting without flipping Knox off?
So before i update to MJA here is what i think i have to do, pls correct me if i'm wrong.
(Im rooted on stock rom/bootloader MF9)
-Unroot and go back to stock
-Flash MJA
-Follow the instructions on this page to get back root
-Enjoy (Hopefully?)
It seems that i would never have to data wipe either so i can preserve most of my setting too!

Have I Bricked my Phone?

I am only just new and have been playing around with this custom rom stuff for a short while now, I have ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.4.7 on my I9305T. I have tried a few different Roms so far but they don't work. I tried just today "RevolutionaryS5-V3" it obviously went through the installation process but did not boot into it, just came up with the samsung default ( samsung S III GT- I9305T ) logo in white. It disappeared then came back looping that way.
So now I have went into the "Advanced Menu" and then "show log" I don't know if this will help you but, it displayed this:-

The roms I have downloaded are:- aicp_i9305_lp-10.0-RELEASE-20150708 (this one looped its boot logo), cm-11-20150907-NIGHTLY-i9305 (i have the recovery .img for this), cm-12.1-20150926-NIGHTLY-dogo (i have the recovery .img for this), FlashingDroid_S5_v2.2 and RevolutionaryS5-V3, if these roms are any good for my I9305T, Can anyone give me some advise on what or how to install these roms.

Something went wrong while flashing rom or maybe the rom data is corrupt.
Bootloop means your device fails to boot if system data is corrupt by flashing rom
You had soft brick.
Reboot into recovery and restore the stock rom if you had nandroid backup.

RevolutionaryS5-V3? that one is not for the i9305 unless i have missed a thread for it. The roms for your phone can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development-i9305

Hey Piyush,
Initially I did try do a Backup using Titanium Backup app, first try I think there wasn't enough room on the internal HDD, so I tried on the external HDD which I thought had done so.. So when I came to this problem, the backup did not work.
Now at first before I rooted the phone. It was done by odin v1.85 and of course it did root. So I know it has superSU, but I can't get onto a stock rom for this phone because of my **** sat internet bandwidth and also a good site to download from. I tried the samsung-update site, but the 2 links don't allow me to finish the download. Do you know of any links that i can download the stock rom for my i9305T my phone was running android v4.3. The link I just stated was for v4.3.
Can you give me some advise on how or what I should do?

Wayne

I'm not sure if you can downgrade from 4.3 to 4.2 or earlier. If the phone was running 4.3 then I'd install 4.3 or 4.4 to get stock recovery back. Then you can install a custom recovery. No need to root your phone for that.
Do you know a link that will take me to a compatible file for my GT-i9305T, I'm just not sure what to look out for. Also would you be able to give me a quick rundown/instructions on how to do this. Will I need odin, and which version will I need. Currently I have v1.85, that's what I used to start off. I really don't wanna brick this phone.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ck-rom-4-4-4-gt-i9305n-i9305nxxufni4-t2886807
there you'll find the Kitkat DBT for i9305. Will work with your phone as well. In the OP you'll find instruction on how to install this version via odin. Odin is included in the zip.
After that you put your phone into download mode again and flash the preferred recovery via odin. But don't use TWRP 2.8.7.0 from their site. That build is broken and is getting fixed atm. Either use TWRP 2.8.5.0 or latest Philz Touch. If you decide to flash a custom ROM again, make sure you're in the right forum, e.g. i9305
Thanks heaps for your help so far maultasche, I will let you know how I go with this.

From backup I actually meant if you had cwm and you did a nandroid backup of the stock rom from the recovery itself.
If you are getting bootloop you can easily fix it by restoring the backup.
Search on the net about recovery from soft brick and bootloops.
Nandroid backups can atleast get your device in running condition.
If you have custom recovery backup your rom first then you can flash any desired rom.
One more thing if you had flashed custom rom do not factory reset your device, this may result in soft brick.
Hope that helps!
Is your device booting now??

Yes, I successfully got the phone to boot up and run. I used the I9305XXUFNI3_I9305DBTFNI3_I9305XXUFNI3_HOME.tar file using the odin v3.09 and now it has asked the country and so on..

You're welcome, glad it did help.
Yes, you need odin to flash the recovery again. No need to root your phone just to install the recovery, as mentioned. Then you can flash whatever ROM you'd like. One thing - although CM 11 still gets nightlies from time to time there is no maintainer left. He switched devices. If you encounter any issues which might be device related they probably won't get fixed.
Is sending pics on pc still an issue? Sorry, I wasn't online and I forgot to check the thread :/
HI Maultasche, so I have been looking at the" Resurrection-Remix-LP-v5.5.6" rom and have been downloading the files for it, but i am not sure what the "changelog" file is for or what it does. The page - forum . xda-developers.com / galaxy-s3 / development-i9305 / rom-resurrection-remix-4-4-2-kitkat-v5-t2704828 . It tells me I need these Installation Files:- ROM , Gapps & Changelog. Do you know if i can install this Rom using
CWM v6.0.4.7?
Oh, and about the send pic question, I wanted to send you a pic of the odin mode screen from my phone, but the only thing I could see was the "insert image" button. But it wanted me to enter a URL for the picture. Whats the go there?

The change log file only shows what has been fixed and what has changed to previous builds. Nothing you need for the ROM
You only need the ROM, gapps and the recovery. Use the recovery rodman has mentioned in his post.

Need to install a ROM without a PC
Hi maultasche, Can you help me with this, I have my wife's phone which is a S3 i9305 as well. The USB connection on the phone has been damaged and so the cable can't be connected. I was wondering if I could still install the ROM without the use of a PC. Can you tell me the best software I could do this with? Also I am not sure the best way to back up the phone, not wanting to root it.
Regards,
Wayne
hi,
what ROM youre talking about? Official firmware? If you have a flashable zip yo could do that with flashfire, flashify, rashr etc. Or via custom recovery. For a custom recovery is no root needed.
As for backups depending on what you want to backup (whole system including data etc. or just apps with apps data). Without root your backup options are kind of limited. You can backup apps and app data via helium but not every app can be backed up using this tool. You could do a back up via adb but not sure how complete such a backup will be. I never did that. Or a backup with a custom recovery again. Might be the easiest way.

I know this is an old tablet and mine works fine but there are so many apps i cannot run on it because it's so old.
For some reason when I go to recovery (power plus volume down) it only gives me options to install from cache or to install from SD card. My Tab doesn't have an SD card slot and I've tried many different things like putting the Google Apps file in an /sdcard folder but no luck. Maybe I need a better recovery that will allow me to install from OTA USB or from Internal storage, or directly from the PC.
I have never rooted a phone before or unlocked a bootloader, and maybe I'm missing a step, but no matter how many forum posts I check people seem to be able to run it from /sdcard which is simply not working for me.
Please help!
I've got the same issue here, and tried everything, from what you've said you've done to using command lines in adb fastboot, and nothing seem to bring me closer to write on the root of the device. Maybe with both of us asking here someone pops up to bring some light to this.
@saitar
Install the TWRP Recovery 2.8.7.0 or higher.

I don't know if this is still an issue for you, but I went further as nobody seemed to see the post.
I used this TWRP recovery, then flashed the lollipop rom here. But I stopped at the gapps... the only one I was able to flash was this one, but the keyboard isn't showing up. I tried the complete compilation and the flashing failed due to lack of space, although the device was plenty of it...

Thanks for replying. Yes, this is what I found out reading in xda and other forums, as the recovery I mentioned above is the 2.7.1.0, but is there a 2.8 recovery for the Tab 8.9, or should we be able to update the 2.7 to 2.8 without problems? Edit: I noticed in your post signature you got a 3.0 version on your device... how?
@saitar
Here are the link for TWRP https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...ev-testing-twrp-galaxy-tab-8-9-p7310-t3469987
You can update your TWRP with the ZIP file from your existing Recovery or with Odin and the *.Tar file.

You're the man! th tar file didin't work, but I was able to flash the 3.0 TWRP, then flashed the Nougat version and the Gapps. Everything is working fine.
Thanks again!
Nougat update for i957?
Great to see the efforts here, kudos.
A naive question, whether this is going to work on my i957 currently on 4.0.4 ICS? If no, any recommendations for any latest ROM for i957? Being on 4.0.4, a number of apps have started causing issues, support not being available.
If there's another thread I should post on, pls suggest the same.
Thx
