yes, you have to decompile the apk and change values in some resource files. I did it before (raising the values to 6x7) for my Rom and many other members across different devices/forums
There is definitely no exact tutorial how to do it. But if you search you'll find all the necessary entries to change. Of course you need the knowledge about de/compiling the apk.

The easiest method is to download the XPosed framework by @rovo89. Then install the launcher 4x5 module.
Use Google to find xposed download link.

u mean change only icons ? if thats the case , then u need a theme manager to change the theme. some themes change only icons, some change everything. but the icon set is inside a theme. themes support specific launchers. so its possible that ur favorite launcher doesnt support ur favorite theme ( for the icons ). the other way around is to use a root explorer and change every little icon manually inside apks.

Better yet, you can make your own theme. Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44609532
You can get everything you need to know about making your own theme there.
BTW, thanks for searching the Forum/Web first, because some people just don't.
Good luck

the stock one is LGHome3.apk.
since u use an alternative launcher look for it in data/app. apps u install go there. in system/app are the system apps that have root access.
well I found it as u said, it's LGHome3.apk.
used ninjamorfh, exchanged the icons, finished my project and wooow: I soft brick my phone
the launcher disappeared and after reset it was stuck in the logo.
so after about 4-5 nervous hours of pushing apk thru adb, recovery, software reset, wiping it all , download rom, flash stock rom with kdz,
restore my 120 apps, restoring backup files, I was able to bring my 4x back to life as it was before.
so conclusion :
some things don't worth to **** with  LOL
if u want to change ur app drawer icon don't be hard headed like me, create a theme or install a launcher that can do it.
anyway,
anyone that helped me in this thread .....thanks

i guess there is a reason why there is no app that can change manually the app drawer icon, It could get messy.
I used ninjamorph app (root app), it should decompile/recompile the apk automatically.

if it is only for icon , u can just treat the apk as if it was a zip. just open it with the zip manager and force the icon to replace the one u want.
Short of a different launcher how can I remove the search field near the top of the desktop?
Are you on GNL or Launcher3 (AOSP)?

Yeah people refer to both Google's launcher and the AOSP launcher as stock, so didn't know what you were talking about exactly. Assuming you mean Google then, only way to do it is to do what the other guy said.

Basically. Google doesn't want to make it easy to un-Google their own launcher,.
Anyone have any info on how the xposed mod achieves the same result? (how to do this manually without xposed)
All I know so far is to decompile the app (using apktool or apk multitool etc), look through the smali files for something that looks promising (using Notepad++ or similar), find a thread that can point you towards the proper smali edits to make, recompile the apk then push it to device.
I think there could be something in /system/priv-app/Velvet/Velvet.apk/smali/com/android/Launcher3/launcher.smali but I'm not sure what I'm looking for yet..

I am interested as well. If it is only changing a file using Notepad++, I would try it.
What I did was goto sys/priv-app and remove velvet. Install nova prime then reinstall google app as a user app. Remove google launcher too. This will remove that awful search bar in the recent apps menu. Also removed that flicker when you swipe away apps in that menu. I also tested this method from a pure stock state. Removed google launcher , install nova. Then cut velvet from sys/priv-app to the SD card somewhere. Reboot. Wipe cache. Once reboot I moved velvet folder back to priv-app. Reboot, and worked the same.

i disable google app and it disappear.
There are a few decent themes in Samsungs store. However, the icon packs are horrendous. Nova launcher hides them in some places but not others, like the share menus.
Does anyone know how to flash the material icons over any theme?
Edit: Also, how about the wallpaper for settings and dialers?
Thanks for any help [emoji2]

You would need apktool to compile the icons into the actual theme. However, if you want to just remove the icons and have them stock, you can try this:
-Edit /data/overlays/jsonfiles/userjson/THEMENAME.json and remove the line for "appicon", then delete the corresponding folder from /data/app/THEMENAME.appicon-1. If you want to remove the icons from the lockscreen, you will need to do the same for the "lock" line/file.

3. Long Click on the Desired Icon Pack ... Press Apply
4. Grant permission on SuperSu popup.
5. Restart.

For you who likes to use third party launcher but still want to keep on using the gesture rather than oldschool navbar button, there's a work around (I've tested it on my 10T)...
What you need:
1. A little bit of knowledge on how to modify a theme
2. Gesture app such as FNG
3. Third party launcher (I use Nova7)
How to:
1. Turn on the navbar button as your defauly setting and turn your gesture app up and running...
2. Put this script on your theme:
Save this script on framework-res > themevalues.xml
<dimen name="navigation_bar_height">0.0dip</dimen>
<dimen name="navigation_bar_height_landscape">00.0dip</dimen>
3. Set your theme and enjoy your new home screen using third party launcher + gesture...
Hi arbayxda,
Thanks for the tip, almost all works, excepet to hide the navbar....
Where can I found the theme folder?
I checked in the \MIUI\theme folder and saved the script to the framework-res folder but no luck...
I have MIUI 12.5.1, default theme, Nova 7.0.37 beta

Default theme should work, but unfortunately you need to have root access in able to save the script onto the default theme...
If you have custom ROM installed, all you need is a modified theme (mtz file) that you can download from any website, save the script mentioned, and import the mtz file via theme manager, then apply it
Ok, thanks, not a big problem, I can use the FNG. Every reboot, I have to disable the navigation bar in the system settings, and working fine.
I would like to ask a favour....
Just for test reason.
Could you pls create a .mtz file include the mentioned script to "hide" the navbar? Example the default stock theme will be perfect....
Because the mtz files installable on the stock ROM and no root required, just enough the MIUI Theme editor as I know. If working, anybody can really hide the navbar on MIUI 12.5 without root, of course, with the FNG....

My question to this is, Miui 12.5 on ID ROM (Indonesia ROM), can't apply third party theme... Although it is a default theme, when I extract the default theme, it's automatically becomes third party theme, it's no longer recognized as the default theme. I don't know if other ROM from other countries can apply any external theme. If your ROM can use a theme that modified by MTE, I surely can extract the default theme and save the script onto it. But it's no use if I make the theme, but your ROM doesn't allow you to apply third party theme... Pardon my English...

Hi,
I really would like to test your modified theme too.
Sent you an access request on gdrive
Thanks
Hi arbayxda,
I tried your modified theme on my device (Redmi note 10) and it worked... half !
After being imported and installed with MIUI Theme Editor, the theme can be applied and the nav bar gets hidden.
But for some reason, after nearly 2 hours or so, the theme gets automatically replaced by the default one (maybe because it comes from a different device model)
So It's not a success for me, but I know now that it can be done on an unrooted RN10 (I can now investigate more...)
Oh and, the file to be edited in framework-res is theme_values.xml (not themevalues.xml)
Thanks again for the help and informations
I also sent request for gdrive.
