Selling my N6 need to turn off OTA's in M - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just restored my N6 and am getting ready to sell the phone, I will be turning on the hotspot feature, and need to make sure that the phone does not notify or download OTA's - I do realize that's why we have our Nexus' but the person that I am selling it to can't sideload OTA's himself. He will be giving it to me periodically to upgrade and doesn't want to be bothered with the notifications... is there an easy way to do this? Thanks!

I do not, just flashed fresh M. I am not opposed to rooting, what are your thoughts?

well, if you do ever get an update notification, you can always long press on it then turn it off.

I do not want any notifications to appear...

Unless things have changed in Marshmallow, but I am pretty sure disabling notifications from Google Play Services disables the OTA update notification. I don't remember what else this gives notifications for, but there is probably something you may be blocking as well with this.
With Lollipop and above, all OTAs check for modifications before installing. Root and/or the changes you would need to stop the OTA notification would make it so you can't install an OTA. You would need to flash the factory images, then re-root and make the changes to stop the next OTA notification again. So this would be a bit more work on your end to install an update for the owner.

Yeah - I am aware that OTA's check for mods... What about disabling the "SystemUpdateService" - I know that would require root, but has anyone else had success with this?

Force ota update

Android 4.4.3 Force Update Procedure found :
Disable Google Services Framework and Restart the Phone...now clear cache and Enable the framework and check for the Update.....!!
It's been known for a while.
Also, don't do it... http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...to-never-clear-google-service-framework-data/

Force it but after you will have many problems to resync the phone whit playstore!
I have always forced it this way and have never had any problems with anything afterwards. I just have to accepts G Play terms and conditions after I do it. It might be something Google engineers don't want us doing. I think this process generates a new ID for the phone, which Google might not want.
It doesn't make a difference in getting ota. It is a wasted effort.

You're wrong, it does. I have always gotten my OTA doing this.
I was also wrong though. I just noticed that my Facebook messenger notifications aren't getting through. So don't do this people, flash the factory images without -w flag instead.

The syncing problem will resolve itself in a matter of hours. There is no permanent damage done.
Is it really that serious to get the update from OTA with zips and images and roms floating all over the place. We make too much of an incremental update as well..Just my opinion
Just tried it didn't work. Not too fussed about the effects as it only lasts for a few hours.

I did it because the micro USB port is broken, I'm unrooted and have stock recovery (bad situation).
Also, it does work. You just have to repeat the process until it works, it never works the first time.

How to disable ota notifications? Or trick phone into thinking it's been updated?

How can I disable ota notifications here? I am rooted.
Or what could i edit in the build.prop that would show I'm up to date? The build info?
Hello? Is this thing on? Lol anyone know how and also avoid any wakelocks?
Or just update the phone?
You can press and hold on the notification, tap app info and tick hide notifications from this app. Alternatively, you can install an xposed module called notify clean if you have xposed. Incredibly useful.

xposed doesn't work with ART (the runtime in Android 5.0) so this isn't a solution
You are absolutely correct, that completely slipped my mind. Sorry!

Not so easy if you are rooted or anything modified.
Actually it is as I did so to go from 5 to 5.0.1 I was rooted, had twrp, elementalx kernel, and decrypted. Instead of flashing the entire factory image you just flash the needed images. That's what I did and didn't loose any data. There are a few posts here on how to do it. Here is one http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/5-0-1-wiping-t2975382

I understand how to do it. I've done it many times before. But the op asked how to get rid of the notification. For whatever reason, some people may not want to take the update, or are modified & don't have time to restore stock, or will be away from their PC over the holidays. It would be useful to know how to disable the ota notification until we have time/ equipment to return to stock or flash images.
What I have done on my n5 is go to /etc/security & rename otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak & reboot. Then try to take the ota & it will immediately fail verification. Voila, no more ota notification. I think this will last until a reboot & then it will try to verify again.
I'm not sure of a more permanent solution.
Thanks Stumpey. Yea haven't had the time yet. Still setting my phone up and haven't even backed up in Tb or Twrp yet. Plus this update is a relatively small one so not in a hurry to manually unroot-update-reroot.
Anyway just turned the notification off like another poster suggested and that's good enough for now. Didn't even realize you could do that.

I do not want to take OTA system updates...

I've unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone with the help of the Nexus Root Toolkit by WugFresh.
I now have it setup just how I want it and I don't want an OTA to kill root or change anything so something stops working (phone isn't for me, but I've set it up just right for someone with special needs).
I've read conflicting information on whether or not an OTA will actually install on a rooted phone or not. Some things say that it won't if you've changed anything at all while others say it might be possible.
Is there some system file I can rename or something to ensure the phone doesn't get a system update unless I do it manually?

no matter how many times you will try to update via ota, you will not be able to. if any files change from stock, any at all, you wont be able to install an ota. especially with root.

And sometimes, even if one is 100% stock, those pesky OTAs won't install.

right. any system file changes prevent install.
Awesome. Thanks.
Will it even attempt to install an update, and if so, does it only attempt once and then give up so you don't get stuck in a loop?
Install a custom recovery. Done. OTAs require the stock recovery in order to flash files.

itll only attemp if you let it(it needs your approval to update), otherwise itll only tell you that an update is available. if you let it, itll try, but fail. if you boot up, youll be where you were before.
Apparently I rooted it incorrectly because it was able to update. I just got a call and the phone had rebooted and went through optimizing X of X apps and now many of the tasker profiles I had set are no longer working.
It wouldn't have optimized a bunch of apps if it hadn't updated the OS, or no?

You'll find update or not optimizing apps happens a lot especially if you clear cache etc...
Your fine otas can't install with root
Just flash twrp it will cone in handy incase you brick it one day you'll have twrp to fastboot fix or sideload a rom to recover from.
ONE NOTE: Never ever ever relock your bootloader with the toolkit you'll be screwed. Always leave bootlaoder unlocked. I just had to rma manufacturer phone replacement I relock mine with toolkit and couldn't flash stock firmware or oem unlock again.

I'll take a look the next time I get over there. It's not my phone, I just set it up for someone with accessibility issues and wanted it to stay the same as the day I set it up but apparently it's not done that.

Quite honestly I would someone finding a solution for the persistent notification. maybe an xposed module could get rid of that if it is ever made.
Just because of the nagging notification I updated my phone in the ugliest way possible, relocking and unlocking it and using the firmware.zip from the OTA with a TWRP backup a guy made

the easystes way to get rid of OTA is to update the phone.
Just flash stock recovery, reboot phone, install OTA, re-flash TWRP.
Its a pain but its done properly.
You dont need to mess with bootloader.
i was thinking about an easier way

Android system update?

I am rooted and unlocked, but today I received a "System Update Downloaded" notification, and it only gives me an option to install it now or later.
If I install it, will it break root? Do I even want to install it? If not, how do I get rid of it?
It's the February 2016 Security Update. (These come out every month.) I usually wait a little bit and someone will release a recovery-flashable ZIP that will bring you up to date safely.

you can not install it being rooted and with twrp recovery, no matter how hard you try. you can flash part of the factory image, then reroot if youd like though.
