Stuck in fastboot - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks,
I need your help;
After a forced shutdown due to a depleted batterie, my device only boots into Fastboot.
My Nexus 6 is unrooted and has stock Android 6.
If I try start, recovery mode, or factory reset, I only get the following error;
"failed to validate boot image: ret=-1"
Connecting it to a PC does not help, as the pc does not recognise the device (so I can not install the usb drivers).
I managed to boot the device once, but all the google aps crashed, and finally android itself crashed.
Now on around every 30th try (in starting android in normal mode), I'll get the follwing message:
"Decryption Unsuccessful, The password you entered is correct, but unfortunately your data is corrupt"
What can I do?

sounds like you should flash a factory image.
ok, heres the problem. to flash a factory image, you need to unlock your bootloader. to unlock your bootloader, you have to enable to oem unlock setting in developer options. which means, you need to try to boot again, 40 times if need be. when you boot up, you need to go into settings, about phone, the press build number 3 times in a row. that will enable the developer options. go back one page, scroll up, and youll see it. go in there and enable oem unlock. now you can flash a factory image.

Yea dude, that doesn't look good at all. Have you ever installed any mod of any kind on the device before? Or was this just random and happened while 100% stock? Your best bet as Simms said, would be to try and get into your developer settings and turn on "allow oem unlocking" and "USB debugging". Then flashing a stock image.

There is no modification to the rom.
Unfortunately, I don't think I so get it booted anymore, the only think that might happen is that it brings me to decryption unsuccessful window and from there on reboot is the only option (also after waiting more than 10 seconds or hitting the power button to try and dismiss the message). Even if I did get into the OS which I succeed once close to the beginning of the problem, I would get so many popups of crashed Google apps that you could do nothing before it would crash the OS completely.

Damn, that's awful dude, I wanna say your Nexus isn't recoverable. Might have to send it in for repair to Google. If there was no modification to it at all, bring that up! You might get it fixed cheaper or free!

It's really sad, and it makes me think why the USB debugging mode is not enabled on default on every device for this very reason.
I did not root the device yet, as I did not wanted to risk to lose the warenty which it still should be under. So I guess I have no choice than to send it in.
I will try one last thing, and that is to hook it up to a Ubuntu powered computer, let's see if I can mount the phone' s drive with it.
I'll keep you folks updated.
UPDATE: negative on the Ubuntu idea, there is nothing mountable (Disk utility)

It works again! At least it seams for now...
This worked for me video ID: 0nDLvy8F5qk on youtube "Nexus 6 Hard Factory Reset Fastboot Bootloader Recovery Mode" from Jamie Wagner (I am not allowed to post links yet)
But I needed 20 tries to boot into factory reset.

if ya know your going to mod it at some point...maybe unlock it so if it does happen...you can fix it. thats my main reason for running an unlocked device. if you know what hits the fan...you can always fix it yourself. just a suggestion though.

Definitely! I would highly recommend just unlocking your bootloader and leaving it unlocked, with USB debugging on! This does not affect OTA updates at all and really, it's a last resort form of protection! My opinion of course!

unlock tbe bootoader
that the best thing youll do for your device, just in case. you dont have to modify anything, and itll still be unmodified.

Always boots into bootloader first - SOLVED!

I have a rather odd issue. I've been using the M preview, and after I rooted it, it restarted on me randomly. Anyway, I now have a fresh update to 5.1.1 from stock 5.1. My bootloader is re-locked, the bootloader version is matched to the proper system version, the stock recovery is in place. There is just one problem. Whenever I try to turn off the phone, restart it, enter recovery from android, connect it to a pc, or any other task that takes me out of android, it always boots to the bootloader and I have to choose it from there. There doesn't seem to be any issue getting to anything, it's just I can't change anything about the bootloader no matter what I do. I've been there and back again with unlocking, re-flashing and even now taking a full stock ota from a locked BL. I'm really stuck and could use some help. In the meantime, I'll keep trying and update if I can get anywhere with it. Thanks for reading!
Perhaps something is going on with your volume rocker. Does your volume rocker function normally? Maybe you have a case that could put some pressure on the volume rocker?
Actually, my problem was that the fb_mode_set was enabled, which will always boot into it. It's a stock precaution for updates. The solution was to enable fb_mode_clear, which returned the phone to booting normally. I hope if anyone gets into this situation down the road, this helps them out.

+1 yes please.
Sure. I clean flashed M and rooted it. It randomly rebooted twice on me when I tried to get a script to access root. After that, it was a bootloop at the regular startup screen. So, I entered into TWRP next, it started flashing. The only thing to do was to get into bootloader and reflash via fastboot, so that's what I did. I knew that I could downgrade the BL because it's a preview, but that wasn't my intention at the time. I took the google image of LYZ28E and flashed that, including the bootloader, fresh. Everything worked fine, except that the bootloader was now the first startup screen no matter what I did. I even downgraded to .08, which is as far back as you can go on 5.1! It didn't matter. BL was always the first screen up. So today, I started looking at the configuration of the BL. It seems that there is a safety protocol built into the BL that switches on when an unexpected error occurs, or when the BL is downgraded. It's there for things like firmware updates, etc. so that you don't end up with mismatches, which could potentially brick the phone. It makes sense, actually. Since I rolled back, it just switched on. I just wish there had been a little more literature on fastboot oem commands and their uses, it would have made for quite an easier time with this. Anyway, if you find yourself always starting up at the BL, try fastboot oem fb_mode_clear, which will disable the safety loop, and it should boot regularly. Again, I hope this helps, and if anyone has any questions, feel free to shoot me a message.
Edit: The entire process (TL;DR version)
1. Enter fastboot mode (if it's not already up)
2. Connect your phone to your pc
3. Open terminal
4. Type "fastboot oem fb_mode_clear"
5. Restart phone. It should now boot regularly.

Hi! I know I am a bit late to reply but for me the "fastboot oem fb_mode_clear" did not do the trick.
I started to play around with the commands and I finally got the alternative. This one did fix the issue for me, and for anyone whose phone did not get fixed by Mike's method, try this--
do steps 1,2,3 for Mike's method and on the 4th step use "fastboot oem fb_mode_clear system" instead of just "fastboot oem fb_mode_clear".

Have I really bricked a Nexus phone??

Here's the story. Got Google Fi package and Nexus 6 today. Decided I'd load Android M preview on Nexus 6. did all the fastboot stuff to get the developer preview installed, then while still in fastboot mode I installed TWRP, then locked fastboot, then rebooted into TWRP. Pushed ROM zip to /sdcard through adb, tried wiping everything failed. Tried flashing zip, everything failed. Decided to reboot. TWRP asked me if I wanted to install SuperSU, i chose to because I thought I might need it to get TWRP working. After rebooting got message "Your device has failed verification and may not work properly" then it powers off. I can boot into fastboot/recovery, but in recovery the touchscreen doesn't work so I can't do anything. Booting normally gives the failed verification message. Tried fastboot format userdata, which I believe is what caused the touchscreen to cease registering in TWRP.
Is there any way for me to recover this thing? Back when I had a Galaxy Nexus, and even with my S5, there's nothing really that can be done that would completely brick the thing. I'm pretty dumbfounded that a Nexus device would be so easily bricked...it's not like I don't have experience with this stuff, I've been rooting and developing Android apps for years.
I have a feeling I have to return the thing, but Amazon has no more stock, and if I buy directly from Google or Motorola I'll have to pay sales tax.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you lock the bootloader just to be clear?
bricked? no, you just didnt read up in information properly. you relocked your bootloader. as of android 5.0, you have to enable unlocking the bootloader after you boot up in the developer section. since you relocked your bootloader before you checked if your device will boot, you can not unlick your bootloader again, which means you can not use twrp either. what you can try is using fastboot to wipe your cache and data. if that doesnt work, id try to get an rma.

If a device is unusable, without any way to recover it, it's essentially a paperweight, or bricked. So if my only option is an RMA, then it is bricked. I don't mean to sound rude or argumentative by the way... I appreciate your help. Just clarifying the semantics.

when you get the failed verification message, what happens after that?
does it ever make it to the M preview?
Also if you wait a little while after that message, you may be able to use adb commands again.
I had the same thing happen with M and TWRP and was able to recover it.

It says it will reboot in 5 seconds, but after 5 seconds the screen just goes blank. It appears the device is off, but maybe not.
Do you know what adb commands I would need to use to recover from this state?

technically, its not bricked, not yet anyways. as many people have fixed this issue using fastboot to wipe cache and data.
well, let it sit for a few minutes after the message, it may just boot normally. That verification message appears with M preview for many users.
you may also see HERE for another possible solution.
if adb is working, chances are pretty good its booting into android, in which case you wont need to do anything else, but let it boot (be patient, it can take several minutes), then retick the selection to allow oem unlock.

ADB works when I boot to TWRP, but when I try to boot normally, after the device will boot in 5 seconds message, the screen goes blank and adb does not work. I let it sit like that for more than 30 minutes. Curiously, when the screen goes blank my PC does chime indicating hardware has been attached.
Can you still get into twrp? If so just move a ROM over to it and flash that, enable OEM unlock restart and unlock boot loader...

If you have TWRP, boot to bootloader and use the following fastboot commands:
fastboot format userdata
fastboot format cache
Then boot to TWRP, connect to PC. Download a ROM to your PC and drag and drop in the root of internal storage. Then flash the ROM from TWRP, boot up, enable OEM unlock. Then boot back to bootloader and:
fastboot oem unlock
You should be good after that.

I can boot into TWRP. At first it was "working" but it couldn't mount /data so I couldn't really do anything (that was the first thing I tried.) Now however when I boot to TWRP it doesn't respond to touch at all... I can get into a shell with adb, but I haven't figured out anything to do from there.

II'm attempting that now.but fastboot format userdata and fastboot format cache fail. after booting into twrp the Nexus shows up in My Computer, but internal storage does not. I can push a ROM zip to the device with adb, but haven't figured out how to flash it yet because touch doesn't work...
SUCCESS! I was able to flash the ROM .zip using ADB in TRWP using
Code:
ADB push ROM.zip /sdcard/.
ADB shell
twrp install /sdcard/ROM.zip

You can lock boot loader, you just have to make sure your phone boots first before locking it

Stuck in Fastboot Flash mode, Developer options turned off

I've followed all of the steps from this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56938530&postcount=1
I've got to the end where I am running the code snippets to flash everything, but everything fails. The error stated is FAILED: remote failure. I am not sure if this is related to my developer options being turned off, but I think it might be.
Is there a way to turn developer options on while in fastboot mode or perhaps a way around this error? The reason I am stuck in the fastboot is because the boot image can't be validated, I am not at the fastboot by choice, haha.
No. If your recovery is still stock, flash the Android N Preview 1 OTA or an Android 6.0.1 OTA image from Google. One of those will restore your Nexus to operating condition, and from there you can try again. If your recovery is TWRP, flash a custom ROM.

I apologize for my ignorance since this is all new to me, but could you explain a few things to me.
Is this what you're referring to when you say Android N Preview 1 OTA: 'https://developer.android.com/preview/download.html'
Secondly, in order to flash these, am I still following the steps I was before, or should I be following a new set of steps?
You don't need the N Preview anymore. Download your Android 6.0.1 image from the Google page and flash using the instructions given on that page.
I went to the page and followed the directions. Still doesn't work. The flash-all script reboots after the first two commands, which lock the phone. But even then, it is still giving the error FAILED:remote failure.
me too!
I seem to be having the exact same issue! i just bought a Nexus 6 online that wasn't booting, it would only show a green led when plugged in. so here I am doing everything I can think of to fix the issue but then I get hit with the "remote failure" when i try to oem unlock the bootloader! (and since the phone wont't boot i can't check the "unlock bootloader" box in the developer options) so yeah I am going to keep researching this but if anyone has any good ideas about to get around the bootloader being locked please jump right in.
anyways I may have deeper issues, the battery will not charge. i know this because when i load up the fastboot menu, which i have to do by holding the buttons while plugging it in, it should say battery charging but all it says is battery ok
I also can't load recovery because when im in the fastboot menu and i choose recovery the phone freezes and the green led comes back on... *sigh*
They have the full ota packages posted on Google site now you can and push through the stock recovery
Here just make sure you get the shame version

I have the OTA. I also installed Wugs toolkit.
My phone is in fastboot mode due to the boot image not being able to be validated. I didn't voluntarily open up fastboot using the shortcut.
The phone is UNLOCKED until bootloader is rebooted, then it is LOCKED. If I click start, it becomes UNLOCKED again. Wug's toolkit tries to UNLOCK the phone even while the phone says it is UNLOCKED. I don't think the phone is actually UNLOCKED, however whenever it tells me it is UNLOCKED, I try to proceed with flashing and it gives me a remote failure message on each command.
The next thing I am going try is the drivers and Wug's toolkit has a driver option, so I will try that. Besides the drivers, any other ideas?
You seem to be inexperienced in rooting Android devices. If you aren't, I apologize for the assumption. However, you should learn how to use adb and fastboot without relying on the toolkit. Toolkits tend to hide diagnostic messages that adb and fastboot generate while running. This missing information makes solving problems much more difficult.

I am inexperienced, I stated that earlier. I have check a bunch of different forum posts and a bunch of different guides. Nothing seems to be helping and it seems like such a simple problem, a boot image that can't be validated. I am not trying to do anything special with my phone, I am just trying to get it to work. I woke up and it was stuck in this 'AP Fastboot Flash Mode (Secure)' mode. It is very bare bones, not even similar to the screens within videos I have seen. One moment the phone says it's UNLOCKED, the next it's LOCKED.
You are the expert, I am not. I am merely following your directions and they don't seem to be working. I did some outside research, came to a toolkit. Toolkits are great for beginners, especially since they are UI built, are built by someone who knows the area of interest, which makes researching easier and more efficient, but on top of that, it seems to be getting me much farther than your advice, although nothing is successful at this moment.
Here is a little more context into my situation. My phone seems to be recognized by Fastboot, but not ADB (From what I found, fastboot will find devices in fastboot, and adb will find devices functioning normally, don't know how true that is.). In addition, my phone seems to switch from UNLOCKED TO LOCKED after reboots, but can become UNLOCKED again if I push ANY button. Every command I issue (i.e flash bootloader, flash radio, flash system, flash userdata) result in the message, FAILED:remote failure, which I am not sure how to avoid (I have googled, checked these forums, checked other forums and there doesn't seem to be much, if any documentation on the error), but I think it is related to the fact my developer options are turned OFF. My next course of action is to install new drivers (I checked my drivers which are said to be up to date, I also installed google USB driver through the sdk, but now I am going to look into an adb or universal driver?) and attempt to rerun everything successfully.
If you have any other ideas, or don't think its the drivers, feel free to bring it up.
As a couple of fellows said before, try this:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/ota
Flash a FULL OTA from the link above, not a factory image. To flash any OTA you don't need to be unlocked. I think you might be confusing the terms (with the OTA you don't have to flash anything using fastboot)
In the link there are the instructions, it's pretty straight forward and easy if you have the correct drivers installed.
OTA requires that u can startup into recovery, I cannot I can startup fastboot through key combo but when I go to select recovery the green led comes back on and the screen displaying the fastboot options remains static
I think the phone freezes because it does not appear to be able to use the battery. though there is a firm battery connection it will not charge or power on without being plugged in. maybe when I select recovery I can quickly unplug and replug the USB and maybe hold the power button to try to simulate a successful reboot.. idk just thinking aloud and working with what I got..
I also can not start in recovery mode and the OTA requires ADB, which isn't recognizing my device. I have also stated that I have followed those instructions, and nothing resulted from them, except the same messages I have been stating these last few posts.
I will try this first chance I get later tonight..

Listen the ota doesn't get installed through fast boot, you have to select recovery through the fast boot then install the update by pushing it as bootloader does not need to be unlocked!

The first two pictures are when the phone is 'UNLOCKED'. The second two pictures are when the phone is 'LOCKED'. The moment I press anything in 'LOCKED' mode, the little android man goes away, and it becomes the first two pictures. WHENEVER I push a button in 'UNLOCKED' mode, nothing happens, except in the bootloader logs screen says, 'FAILED TO VALIDATE BOOT IMAGE RET -1'. I have done everything on that OTA page in every way possible. It has done me no good.
Ok, I made a little progress I think. Wugs toolkit allowed me to use TWRP on my phone and ADB is recognizing my phone now. There are a lot of options within TWRP though, so I am going to look through them all for anything relevant. Anything I should keep an extra eye out for?
If you can use twrp just download a custom ROM to your phone and move it over to SD card and flash it, then you will be able to boot and unlock the bootloader in developer ootions, that is your best bet, if you keep getting force closes after flashing a custom ROM your going to have to do a factory reset from within twrp

If you can use twrp just download a custom ROM to your phone and move it over to SD card and flash it, then you will be able to boot and unlock the bootloader in developer ootions, that is your best bet, if you keep getting force closes after flashing a custom ROM your going to have to do a factory reset from within twrp

I don't have an SD card, can I move it to the internal storage? And how exactly do I do this? I can't copy/paste anything into the phone (it says the phone doesn't actually exist, even though adb is recognizing it as in recovery) or do I sideload it? When I try to sideload it though, the device disappears (and device manager sees nexus 6 under other devices, but the driver isn't up to date and no drivers seem to work. I've tried the google usb driver with no luck.) and it won't allow me to sideload it.

NEM-L21: Stucked with wrong version of boot.img, no more possibility of flashing

Hello everyone, it's my first time writing here, but I’ve tried everything, searched everywhere, and am desperate for help.
I screwed up big time while trying to flash a custom rom on my nem-l21, as I successfully did before with my xiaomi... So what I did:
I managed to unlock bootloader with dc unlocker. Then I got stucked flashing twrp with adb tools. Everything was looking to be fine, no error messages, “flashing successful”… But, I was never able to boot into flashed twrp. Always got stuck on “your phone has been unlocked blah blah. Your device is booting.” It never booted, not in twrp, nor in stock recovery. I tried different versions of twrp from different sources, always same result (flashing successful, booting into recovery not). Booting into the system was fine. And then I made that horrible mistake. Oh, how I wish I didn’t!!
I read on some website, that you are supposed to flash the twrp as boot.img, not as recovery.img. Seemed illogical and stupid to me, but in the end I tried it. Of course, this just bricked my phone, with no possibility to boot. After hours of googling, installing, trying and crying, I managed in the end to flash back stock boot.img. But at that time, I didn’t know my build number (b359), and I flashed boot.img b351. So now I have a phone which boots into the system b359 with boot.img b351, but with lot of errors.
- developer options, security options, display and factory reset option doesn’t work and just crashes. Therefore I am not able to flash the correct boot.img b359 or anything else at all from pc, no way to enable usb debugging and oem unlocking. Adb devices → nothing. I am able to use fastboot (fastboot devices sees the phone), but when try to flash something, I get error “command not allowed”. Also I can’t enable unknown sources installation, which bothers me a lot. And I can’t make factory reset to restore the crashing settings. Also I can’t change display timeout, and original 30 secs is super annoying.
- I am not able to uninstall even apps installed by me, always just restarts system UI and app stays.
What I tried so far:
- flashing correct boot.img from pc, not working because of dev options crashing
- go into recovery, but stock one is overwritten with unfunctioning twrp, always just get stuck on “your phone was unlocked blah blah… your device is booting now”, but it never does, have to hard reboot
- go into huawei erecovery, which is working, but when I try to resolve problem from there, always ends up with errors and crashes
- connect to pc and use HiSuite, system recovery tool here always says “no problem detected”
- updating to b361 through system update settings, always crashes on 5% and sends phone into “your phone was unlocked blah blah… your device is booting now” error
- downloading the proper b359 as and update.app file, put it in dload internal storage → same error during update, put it in dload sdcard → same error, no matter which way I use to start the update
- boot into twrp or stock recovery.img through fastboot without actually flashing it, anyway error “command not allowed”
- do factory reset or update through dial codes (i.e. *#*#123456#*#* …), nothing worked
My pc is windows 10, all drivers up to date. Using powershell as an admin. Am an idiot for not making backup of the phone before I started...
So, now I have more or less functioning phone, but I can’t uninstall any apps at all, can’t install from unknown sources, can’t do nothing from pc, can’t make any update, and lot of important settings keep crashing.
I can use the phone like this, but if somebody could think about some solution for this ****ed up situation I got myself into, I would be grateful to him/her for the rest of my life.
Sorry for a long post.
Thank you in advance and have a nice day
I think using Hisuit will help. Enter Fastboot and connect ur phone to ur computer and use system recovery toll

Xiao Mi A2 "Can't load Android system"

Hi Guys,
My phone suddenly stuck at this screen since may :
Android Recovery
Xiaomi/jasmine/jasmine_sprout
9/PKQ1.180904.001/V10.0.9.0.PDIMIXM
user/release-keys
Use volume up/down and power.
Can't load Android system. Your data may be corrupt. If you continue to get this message, you may need to perform a factory data reset and erase all user data store on this device.
- Try again
- Factory data reset
If i press try again, sometime it will go to fastboot screen.
I can go into recovery mode here but i not sure which step i should do next.
Reboot system nowreboot to bootloader
apply update from ADB
apply update from sd CARD
wipe data/factory reset
Mount/sstem
view recovery logs
run graphics test
run locale test
power off
I'm not a very tech savvy person, i would really appreciate some help as i have data inside my phone which i need. So if possible i would like to retain the data.
I tried like EDL,fastboot, and flashing none seem to work. Of course I may be doing it wrong.
Can anyone guide me step by step I be happy to give an reward via paypal.

Thank you so much for replying.
Nope, but I can do EDL to unlock bootloader, I already disassemble the device a few times.
Just that every time I try to flash it , it give me some error. like Bluetooth error or the version error .
Which I watch thousand of video to work but it's doesn't help. Or maybe I just watched the wrong video
Ok tell me exactly what are you doing and where you have downloaded the rom.
If it's corrupted and you try to flash it you will lose the data... Was debug USB activated on developer settings?
My device died too. After the October update, he never came back. It is looped on the home screen written "Android One".
I've tried several tutorials, it accesses the FastBoot screen, but when trying to use MI Flash appears a Bluetooth error and does not proceed.
I've tried using the adb flashing unlock_critical command, but it fails too.
He didn't have the bootloader unlocked, I now have a large paperweight.:crying:

You can try to short the edl points so you can flash the ROM again
