Speakerphone (loudness, clarity) - Nexus 5X Real Life Review

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the LG Nexus 5X's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Not bad until you reach max volume. Then it becomes spiked with glitch sounds and really becomes tinny.

I was using this phone for almost 2 hours on a conference call. I had it on speakerphone the entire time, but it was so weak that I had to huddle around my phone. My previous phone, Galaxy S3, was at least twice as loud and had significantly better audio clarity.
This speakerphone sounds like it's sitting in a box of kleenex that's been submerged in honey.

Very tinny, and prone to experiencing glitches.

For me the speakers are clean and loud enough - if i want to play loud music I would just connect my phone to an external speaker.

My device sometimes stop playing sound at all, like while watching video on YouTube sound would stop coming through speaker but videos keep playing, this also found on spotify too a restart fixes the problem. Is it some sort of software glitch or my unit is faulty? I decided to take it to the cpw store but it happens randomly

I think its everything is good.

Tinny it is.
compared to nexus 5 this phone has tinny speakers. what good does speakers in front do if they sound shallow. and according to specs, nexus 5x does have a few less DB than nexus 5.

I was about 20 seconds into a call before we realized "this isn't going to work". Very low volume, poor sound quality,.

I find the speakerphone really poor on this phone.
I previously had a Samsung Galaxy S4 which had a great speaker phone - it was ideal for use in the car hands-free from the mobile phone holder.
However with the Nexus 5X I can barely hear the caller. The speakerphone just cannot handle high volume - maximum volume is not loud enough and it gets badly distorted and tinny when going over 3/4 volume (surely the only part of the speakerphone volume that anyone would use?). I also have issues that the caller cannot hear me either.

Honestly I was hoping for better. Times I want to listen to music but don't have anyway to connect to an external speaker it seems quiet. Turn it up to the max and its like the speaker can't handle the volume. I just came from a LG G Flex. Good phone but no support. However it had a rear facing speaking but it was loud and clean at max volume. Kind of feel like I went backwards with the speak build.

I expected it to be pretty bad after hearing complaints about it. It doesn't seem bad to me and I'm coming from a Moto X 2014, which has really good speakers.

Coming from an LG G2 it sounds the same - glad it's front firing.

The speaker on my 5X is much better than my last phone, an LG G2, so I'm pretty happy. Maybe some are better than others?
One thing I recently learned that, to me, is counterintuitive, but it works with both this phone and my old Samsung tablet (which, with 2 speakers, isn't really much louder than the 5X). If you put the phone on a hard surface, speaker facing down, it becomes much louder and fuller. For my tablet, with the speakers on the bottom, I keep it vertical leaning against something.

My Nexus 4 that I have given to my wife , leaves it for dead in all repects, its garbage period!

This phone - set to its loudest settings - is quiet compared to any of the last 5 phones I've had: Galaxy Note 4, Droid MAXX, Droid RAZR MAXX, Thunderbolt, even a Droid Eris.

Coming from the m8 it's an unfair comparison considering that they are in different tiers, but I find the 5x speaker to be pretty weak, not even average. But it's fine for everyday stuff.
Just don't expect to show cool songs to your friends in noisy environments.

How would you rate the LoudSpeaker?

The last HTC Phone I had was the Evo3d and I was not satisfied with the loud speaker. Would anyone with the VIVID care to tell us about the loud speaker on the VIVID?
Is it loud and clear during a speakerphone call?
Is it loud and clear while watching youtube?
Is it loud and clear when playing games?
Is it loud and clear when you get a phone call?
Is it loud and clear when you get a system msg... txt, pic, etc?
Short answer is that it sucks.

It wkrks fine for me
Sent from my beastly HTC Vivid
HTC is known for horrible external speakers. The Inspire was the worst.
The Vivid although a little clearer than the Inspire, it is still very low in volumn.
It is a bit louder than the Inspire, but about HALF as loud as my Atrix or Samsung Skyrocket.
The Inspire was the last HTC phone I planned on getting. It is unbelievable that a company that big can't spend and extra $1 per phone to put in a better speaker.
Pretty much the same as all htc phones This one is kinda clear but not loud. Then The Headset Output is The same! Low sound like ALways
is this something that can be fixed like out was on the Evo3d? or is it hardware related?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
i would give it a 7 out of 10.
has anyone tried this method? it seems to address this issue on the evo3d maybe it works for other htc phones??

Still waiting to recieve the phone, i'm hoping that its better than im expected. The one good thing about my iphone 4 was it had a good speaker, lets hope its as good or slightly worse.

Sad to hear the audio situation hasn't improved on the Vivid versus the Inspire. I love my Inspire, but one of the first things I noticed was its low headset volume, since I was accustomed to the loud and clear volume output of my previous iPhones and iPods. Back when I listened to music on my iPhone 4, I didn't typically blare it at 100%, but a two-thirds volume level on the iPhone is equivalent to 100% volume level on my Inspire. The problem is that music starts to distort at 100% on the Inspire. While there are various hacks to increase the volume beyond 100% (apps like Volume+ or DSP Manager on CyanogenMod) there is always a downside - the sound distortion gets worse the higher you push the DSP past 100%, which is why HTC sets the maximum volume to the lower level. The bottom line is HTC is choosing to use poor audio hardware in their phones (maybe the new Beats phones are an exception).
For all of your questions, I would say:
Clarity is fine, but overall 'loudness,' not so much.
I had an HTC Aria when it first came out. The loudspeaker on that was of DECENT volume but good clarity. The Vivid's is clear with all sound (aside from call quality, don't like it very much). It just isn't that loud. But with how high the volume can go, it doesn't sound bad at all.
Truthfully with manufacturers these days you Either get Really loud and barely legible or like this phone Clear but not Glaringly Loud and if your in a crowded room trying to talk your probably not going to hear it very well. So it's a trade off for clarity or loudness. It's generally personal preference regarding this. I would suggest testing it yourself and deciding from there.

how about for phone calls while on speakerphone and for incoming call ringing? does it increase that too?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I came from an iPhone, so the ringer volume on this phone is kinda disappointing in comparison. When I'm at work (Best Buy), I can barely hear the ringer, if at all.
Does Volume+ work with the ringer as well, or just audio?
Well this phone is my first android phone so I can't tell you if it is good compared to others, but I use to have an iPhone and the speaker phone is louder than the iPhone but music is a little louder. I'm happy with the volume

I Believe That It Has Improve Over The Inspire But not as good as the iphone or the Galaxy s II.This Was The Thing That I Was Really Hoping To See Improved.
yes... seems to help there as well.
Totally useless...
As a phone ringer. I can barely hear an incoming call ringer if I have the phone on a shirt pocket, in a car driving with windows rolled down, etc.
As an alarm clock, is even worse.
Hope they can fix it in a future software upgrade.
I came from a Telstra T9193 HD2 used in AT&T 3g network. Then "upgraded" (I must say downgraded!!!) to the Windows Phone 7 HTC Surround. Both phones have excellent audio with the loudspeaker in ringer mode or alarm clock. Being the HD2 louder (one speaker) compared to the Surround which have two speakers.
But the Vivid doesn't have half the audio output of any of the above.

Sound quality

So, the Xperia Z was officially launched at a PR event in Dubai yesterday, and the price seems okay too (2499 AED, ~680 USD). I've seen concerns about the screen quality but will check that out myself when its out in stores (March). Can anyone who has the Z comment on the sound quality on the device ?
There is already a thread in Q&A.
What kind of sound quality are you talking about? Audio playback?
I'm concerned by the volume of the earpiece, and how loudly and clearly you can hear people during a phone call. In other words, what the X10 sucked ass at.
If you are concerned about audio check out the HTC One.
Stereo Front speakers, amps, amazing all around.
I've just received my phone from japan and the volume of the phone whilst playing youtube videos or music is appalling. It's hardly audible even at the highest setting. If you're wanting a phone with good speakers this is not the phone, you'll be highly disappointed. Other than the sound everything else on the phone is perfect. Great build quality etc. let me know if you want pictures or to know more about the phone id be happy to post
ya, I heard the speakers are compromised because of water proof. Guess I still got an option for head set which is what I use for my current phone.

Hardly audible? I wonder what you have done with my ears
It's not as loud as some other phones but it's still more than adequate. It's enough to wake me up in the morning (quite easily even) and the best thing is that it doesn't sound distorted even at the highest volume.

I may have over exaggerated with my statement xD. But to be honest it's loud speaker whilst playing music is poorer than an a Lg Optimus L3, I was forced to use the optimus L3 whilst waiting for my xperia z lol so I know full well what it sounds like it. Sound via the headphone jack is fine just the loud speaker sucks it would have problems waking me up but their is always vibration so it doesn't really bother me.

if you have a iphone 5 and use the life proof case from fre that is pretty much the sound quality of the Xperia Z maybe slightly less Don't let that one feature prevent you from buying this fantastic phone it truly is amazing. And that's my honest opinion of the device ;D i'll upload a video for you guys of the sound quality
as I said guys here is the video of the phone sound volume via the loud speaker. If you guys have any requests on how I should record the phone please let me know this was recorded by a galaxy tab 10.1. It's actually not that bad as I previously mentioned please enjoy if you want me to play any other song let me know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9V9UysM0hI&feature=youtu.be

Howdy, what is the in-call volume like with the earpeice? Loudspeaker is not a major issue for me, but in call volume must be good. My One X now is really quite bad in this regard.
Thanks

In call volumes are fantastic can't complain very loud and clear, had no issues with people not being able to hear me. if you know of any way I can test I wouldn't mind making a video for you ;] but trust me when I say it's good even when taking public transport people on the other end of the call could still hear me very clear without issues. I highly recommend this phone much better than the lg optimus g or galaxy s3 I previously owned. I aint just saying it because I own the sony xperia z haha just my honest opinion.
That's great news thanks no idea how you would do a video lol but if you say it's good then I'm happy.

Easily. It's a little less loud than most other phones but it's still loud. It's not exactly inaudible.
I can say the sound quality with ClearAudio+ is nice but it there is not the best. I have my Note 2 optimized with Neak Kernel and his tweaks (Wolfson) are great.. The equalizer from XZ but the hammer looks great and can be adjusted some. Moreover, the unit is still fresh with the time kernel and various mods and custom roms come naturally (I also gets to cook too for XZ)
I don't want to crash the party but the speaker is just lame, it's positioned at the right side bottom of the phone which means that when you hold the phone you will cover the speaker (left hand with your fingers, holding it with right hand isn't an option because the speaker is in the palm of your hand) The speaker is tiny and totally not loud, and when watching a video you can hear the sound come out of the right corner instead from the phone, it's very directional, i am very disappointed about this.
Also sound through headphones is not as good as i would have liked and certainly not as full sounding as with S3.

Question on phone arena review

So there is a new review by phonearena:
phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-4-Review_id3812/page/3
In the text they indicate that the speakerphone is very weak not very loud; but in the DB test they show it has the highest DB (loudness). What am I missing ?
Nothing. Makes no sense. I noticed that myself. The units I've played with have been very loud, but the quality of the speaker isn't very good.

Could it be that because the placement of the speaker is in the rear, it doesn't actually project sound very strongly, in comparison to the DB it's putting out?

I have the international exynos version and the speaker is very loud. I was impressed how good it sounds.
Wait, so when talking on the phone the rear speaker is used? Wouldn't that cause everyone around to hear what the other person is speaking? I thought phones have separate front speaker for phone calls...

If you mean without loudspeaker then the speaker on the front of the phone is used otherwise would be the rear speaker if on loudspeaker.
Also I totally disagree with PAs comments on the loud speaker
I was in the samsung store on monday in oxford street and they had two note 4s alongside 2 note 3s. I played the same song on both phones back to back and at the same time the note 4 is clearly louder and the speaker sounds better dispite the rear placement.
I am not one that listens to music through the phones speaker so whether it sounds tinny or punchy I couldn't care less as long as the phone it loud enough for me to hear it ring!!
isn't that supposed to be number 1 point of the speaker to be loud enough to hear the phone ring? after that you can then talk about being bassy and blah blah.
Makes no sense, look at GSM Arena review: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_4-review-1147p7.php they were surprised as well, Excellent Audio Quality.
I'll see in a couple of weeks when can get my hands on mine.

Speakerphone (loudness, clarity)

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the LG V20's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
So far for me I find it to be OK. Coming from having Samsung Note phones, I find it to be a big improvement. It could still use work IMHO, but I find it to be much louder and just as clear than any of the past Note series speakers.
I would say that listening to music coming from the speaker, is better than average. Its no Axon 7 or HTC 10 but your average consumer will be satisfied with the volume and clarity imo.
Can you compare it to LG G5 speaker?
I am completely deaf in one ear and partially in the other ( thank you drunk driver head on hit and run ) and I love the speaker quality. I have actually had to turn down the notification volume cause it is to loud for me. So far I really like this phone and I was a Note 1, 2, 3 and 4 user. My favorite part is when it goes to "sleep" and I am going to use it I pick it up and it reads my fingerprint and TADA it is ready. I am very grateful for the second screen. Overall I am extremely pleased with this one.
The loudness and clarity is not a Gimmick, at least for mine . I usually hear music on Pandora and Spotify, and believe me, as someone who hear music daily on spotify and pandora, im experiencing something very different than other devices i have owned.
This is great to hear as I wear hearing aids and the speakers on the Note 7 and S7 Edge sucked for speaker calls....

So, I have had the phone for a day now and I will say that the bottom speaker for calls, You Tube, etc for my ears ( I wear BTE hearing aids) is the best I have ever experienced in a phone and totally blows away my experience with previous Samsung notes.
The earpiece speaker is also the best I have experienced for my particular hearing loss, especially when set to the setting that gives clear sounding voices during calls.
This is exactly what I hope for every time I get a new phone and I seem to have finally found it.
For some reason I thought the V20 will come with dolby atmos or some audio enhancement software by B&O Play. I have seen the Korean version with the B&O logo on the back of the V20.
So I am guessing that the US models don't have any added audio enhancements. Correct?
My V10 audio gets a powerful boost when dolby atmos switches on. The volume level will be around 15% and its pretty loud.
On my V20, the volume has to be increase up to 50 -60% for comfortable "loudness".
Let's hope soon there will be some sort of root for the V20, so I can install the dolby atmos zip file.

When i pair my V20 to the Fm transmitter on the car, it sounds higher than the when i connect other smartphones. Also, for some reason, i can hear things in the song i didn't even know where there. I'm not joking. It is like it amplifies the gain on the background as well making you hear what you are missing from the song. But my bluetooth wont take the hi-fi though. Maybe is because it is not one of the new types of Fm transmitters
Still - is there any former owner of V10? Can anyone compare the speaker quality to V20?

:good: Good for you sir.
I posted about this in the V20 Q&A section, but this is the same topic so I thought I'd drop my two cents in here. The speaker on my LG G5 blows my V20's speaker out of the water and it's kind of disappointing because I love everything else about the phone over the G5 (both phones are the T-Mobile variants btw). Watching videos is fine on the V20, but music is a no-go. I could fill the room with surprisingly clear and deep sound with my G5, but the V20's speaker when it comes to music playback sounds like it's being filtered through a dense mesh

Not sure what you are talking about, there might exist phones where it's even better, but I actually find it extremely loud and clear! Way better than how I remember the M8 to be when it was new (my speakers somehow degraded over time). And, more importantly, people on the other side hear me very well too, with the M8 they were complaining the whole time when I was using the speakerphone.

Amazing when playing music or watching video, but on a call the sound only comes from the bottom speaker.

Which mode is that, coz my HTC 10 loud speaker wasn't as loud as my HTC One m9
Today I took a shower and during that shower I realized I feel like listening to some music. so use the magic words and I spoke to my phone I said to him ok Google Play Coldplay music in Spotify.
Then the volume was too low, so I spoke to magic words again and ask my phone to increase the volume it worked out just fine.
Awesome!!!

Your speakers may or may have not degraded.
The speakers from my M9 were very quiet at some point and the sound sounded like it was cracking.
The problem was that dust got in the grille.
So i just took a toothbrush (dont forget to dry it before using it) and took out the dust.
You have to swipe towards the screen to get the dust out.
One of those small brushes used to clean hair trimmers is good too.
I first saw it here and it actually worked:

I'm very happy with the speaker. I compare it to my older S6 and my temp OnePlus 5 and the sound coming from the U11 is much richer and warmer. It might not be as loud as the OP5 but the definition is much better where the OP5 sounds louder but very thin and high pitched.
Can someone tell me about the quality of ear piece ? Is it loud enough for hearing the caller from other side in noisy environment ?
Well the quality is amazing but the volume is extremely low unless you crank it to 100...but if you combine it with Viper4Android just use the "eXtra Loud" option set to extreme and Max Gain 4x and max output to 0dB... then half volume is now loud and the quality is still there
Coming from the iPhone 8 the volume is very low and distinct lack of bass.
Quite disappointed to the point I thought my unit was defective.
Hi,
for me,my M8 sounds better then my new U11.
