I got a new Captivate a couple weeks ago now. Since then my battery life has been less than 12 hours on stock 2.1, stock 2.2, Paragon RC6 and Serendipity 5.12.
Yesterday I decided to wipe the phone and start off with stock apps then slowly add them back in each day. So far, I'm 5 hours unplugged and still have 86% battery (stock apps) after using some GPS, some WiFi, 3 phone calls for a total of about 20 minutes, some browsing and some text messaging. THIS IS HOW THE PHONE SHOULD BE WORKING. Therefore, one of the apps I normally have installed is being an asshole. However, this is going to take me forever to slowly add each one back in and monitor them to see what is killing my battery.
Does anyone have an idea of what it might be from the following (I didn't list what comes on the default Serendipity ROM because it obviously isn't anything already on it):
3G Watchdog
Adobe Reader
Advanced Task Killer
Angry Birds
AppBrain Market
Barcode Scanner
Beautiful Widgets
BLN Control
Cineplex Mobile
ConvertPad
Documents To Go
Dropbox
Google Earth
Evernote
Facebook
GasBuddy
Google Goggles
Google Sky Map
Google Translate
GPS Test
KeePassDroid
Lookout
Mint.com
Rogers My Account
Google Reader (not setup to sync)
ShootMe
Google Shopper
Skype
SoundHound
Spaghetti Marshmallo
Spare Parts
Tip Calculator
Titanium Backup
Twitter

*=Suspicious. Any of these could be the culprit(s) since they access the internet/network, but ones like Twitter and Facebook that update regularly are most suspect.
Do you keep skype connected? I would imagine it would use a lot of power if left connected.
What is your refresh interval set for in facebook?
Have you made sure to flash or reset with a full battery? The first time i did a factory reset, i did it with a half battery and my captivate would only last about 6h with light usage. After resetting with a full battery I could go 14-16 hours with similar usage.
Another issue ive seen is if you are in a low signal area that can also cause higher battery drain.
I'd suggest installing osmonitor from market and see what apps are running and eating up resources.
I previously had appbrain issues where it was running constantly at 5-10% of the cpu's resources but just uninstalled and reinstalled and all seems ok now. ymmv...

ones in red definatly, blue meh... with the built in memory management/ tweaked management in updated newer/custom roms, task killers use more power than they save.
Android has their own online market with push installs now. AppBrain not needed. https://market.android.com/

The blue ones could also be battery vampires because they access the network/wifi. Depends on how often they are set to sync data.
Thanks for the suggestions, I think what I'll do first is install everything that isn't suspicious from what you guys advised against and monitor that. Then I'll slowly add back the suspicious apps.
By the way, I'm going on 12 hours now and only at 74%. Usually my phone would be dead by now. This is with moderate use too. I just got off an hour long phone call with my brother after we both put our phones in speaker phone mode and owned kids on Black Ops.
don't forget beautiful widgets. stock setting were to update weather every 15 min. that is a lot of data over the course of a full day.
i found that one would kill my battery.

weather apps are battery killers. I uninstalled mine and went from 10hours to two days between charges.
@morrty, be sure to let us know your results.
I definitely will, it just may be a little while because I'm calibrating the battery by doing a full run down and full charge. I'm actually having a hard time running down the battery now.
Currently sitting at 45% @ 29 hours.
Incredible, I can't wait to single out that asshole app.
So far, I've installed all of the non suspicious apps. My battery started draining a little bit faster but not to the point it was before. It still seems like normal use. 7% drain overnight. 4% more since waking up, showering and coming to work.
Latitude was a huge offender I found. Even with the auto check-in disabled, it kept the phone in a partial wake-lock.
I've still got more testing to do but I'll update when I find out more.
Looks like it was a mix of facebook, twitter, latitude and dropbox.
Thanks for the help guys.
I disable apps like "news and weather" etc, but for some reason after a while they are enabled again... Anyone know what the reason could be? Or how to fix it. It's not that big of a deal, but still.

I believe some apps still sync/exchanging data with this app even though you disabled it
I faced same sort of issue with Xperia Z, this app became crazy and completely drained battery off
I did reset wifi settings and it was gone.
Use wakelock detector to determine which apps may running at same time (e.g Google Maps is running even though i disabled it manually)

In the end I/we need root to grab this beast by the horns. Can't use 'disable service' without root

1. Find wakelock detector tutorial to run on Kitkat, useful to check any excessive app running at background
2. Auto startup manager, disable uncessary apps at boot
3. In dev settings, enable kill all process (no apps would running anymore), i dont like this since killing process might be not good for OS stability
Notice you can get some lag if you enable it
Hi
I am on stock rom now (XT1068 Dual sim). I noticed google alarms are eating battery a lot. Even i tried amplify but it made situation more worse. Before installing amplify battery drain at night is 1-2%. After using amplify, i got about 6-8% drain at night (checkinhandoff service is the culprit here).
Can any one explain what is powermanagerservice.wakelocks ?
See the attached pics
Thanks in advance.
I'm in the same boat.... Just can't get rid of play services wakelocks.... Tryed all, Greneefy pro, some "fixed play services", custom ROM, app ops, amplify free... Getting out of ideas

PowerManagerService is basically a catch-all for partial
wakelocks (wakelocks requested by non system apps).
A wake lock is a mechanism to indicate that your
application needs to have the device stay on.
Any application using a WakeLock must request the
android.permission.WAKE_LOCK permission in an
<uses-permission> element of the application's
manifest. Obtain a wake lock by calling newWakeLock
(int, String) .
Yeah too many wakelocks by non system apps(Amplify). Switched to titan prime rom. Wakeclock issue resolved.

Try disabling background data for google play services. It doesn't consume much battery after this step.
Even when there is no data connection google play services will run in the background.
Dont use amplify.. It will increase wakelocks. Dont use disable service app. After disabling all location services using that app, checkin service started eating battery.
Try Deep Hibernation option in Greenify. It should work.
If you really dont use them, just disable them with titatinum.
Hi Friends !
We have doze enabled in developer option setting. Now there is aggressive doze option which is by default enabled.
My doubt is weather using Greenify it helps further or it kills more battery.
Weather Greenify is useful in Nougat as this app is not updated since long.
What I have noticed that my Whatsapp is always in top or 2nd for battery eating with Doze/A.doze applied.
However when I uses Greenify it is able to hibernate WA and battery consumption with WA becomes less
in that case.
Someone suggest that without A.Doze battery stats is better.
Lately I have started to use Naptime also but didn't find any good on it for battery.
Anyone could put more light on optimized setting.
And Naptime/A.Doze was unable to hibernate Social APPS/Cloud apps/system apps only Greenify was able to do that.
Whatsapp still has it's place imo because the dumbest feature ever doze on the go exists, if your phone moves doze doesn't work as well as it should. Greenify isn't affected by that so if you greenify an app it will remain in hibernation no matter what until it is opened or called on.
the only thing i suggest that is useful is Wakelock detector. While by itself it is just for monitoring, if found when apps were misbehaving. E.g., i had an incorrectly configured Tasker profile that just drained my battery, and would have never caught it if not for this app.
But i would like someone (with a lot of free time) to re-flash their rom to stock, then use it for 1 week with Greenify, Naptime, G+N, neither. and report back battery stats.
I have a question regarding battery life, I am using magisk + Super SU. will it drain more battery ? To attain root in system I am having to use super su.
I used to be a greenify user but now not anymore ..the aggressive doze feature is awesome ..as for preventing WhatsApp to launch in background..you can switch off auto launch in background and also restrict background data in whatsapp and that extends my battery life dramatically

As I always say when it comes to computers and computing. Your system knows whats best for it. Use the system's doze over any third party app. Your system is always tailored to itself, whereas any third party app needs to be as inclusive as possible to apply to every phone out there.
I have a bad experience with this application from all devices that i used in all my life. Facebook is like a devil for the battery juice. It makes things easy when navigate but it drains my battery more than any other application and more than hardwares themself (wifi, 4G, bluetooth, screen...) Now i fond my self using the Facebook by google chrome it's not the same experience of the application but my battery is happy now
No social media, shopping, banking or charge card apps should ever be installed. Browser login only.
fb, lol I have another name for it. Heavily censored, data miner and epic purveyors of biased disinformation. An untrusted site to put it mildly.
you can check the news, some exemployer reveled that, the fb and instagram apps eat the battery on porpuse

Interesting. Don't know about being illegal but no one needs to be beta testing unknowingly
Trashware and malware. Even with browser login fb wastes your time and battery.
Moving to FB lite can help you to save few %, disable all notification and enable battery optimisation for the app ... nothing more can be done unfortunately.

If facebook app a devil the Facebook lite is the son of this fuuuucker devil
I use Frost from F-Droid -- still evil and not being updated in a long time, but better than alternatives...
