Trying to save files while stuck in soft brick - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

First, I will say that i'm not a developer. I am familiar with backups, rooting and custom roms. I'm just at a total loss with a total loss phone :/
So here's the rundown of my issue/s with my Moto Turbo (XT1254)
The phone is completely "unmolested." My phone is stuck in boot loop, currently. I did bust my screen a few weeks back but it had been working just fine. I picked up my phone to check texts, and I saw the "updating 24 of .... apps." Once finished, it's been stuck in a boot loop since. (Odd thing, my screen now shows split Moto image when trying to boot. Ex: a slot machine with only 2 roller wheels that wont match up)
I have tried to clear the cache several times with no luck of it booting up correctly. I do have files that I was trying to recover since they are not linked to a cloud account, and was trying to avoid a full on reset. I did, however, get frustrated and even tried to reset it back to full factory settings. That did not work either. So, all this being said, I'm back to trying to recover my files (my daughter's first year of life, family stuff, etc), since I cannot get it to even preform a factory reset. Does anyone have some guidance or same issue on this matter? Again, I am trying to salvage my files now while stuck in soft brick / boot loop status.
Thanks any and all who can help me with this!
******* Solved********
I have better diagnosed and fixed my own issue. I'm sorry I don't have pictures or video to better document what I did, but in short, it was as simple as replacing my damaged screen/digitizer, with a new one.
My theory was that during the update, the phone checked over it's systems and found that the digitizer was non-responsive in a few very small areas (this I already knew from using it a couple weeks with the screen damaged) and it somehow caused it to go into a boot-loop. My experience with fixing Playstations 3's, helped shed some light on this for me. I had a PS3 i thought was in good working order, updated firmware to it, and it bricked the system. Come to find out, the blu-ray laser head was no good. Upon the firmware doing system checks, it found that was bad and ended up bricked.
I did replicate the problem by switching the broken screen and new screen back and forth 2 more times after the initial fix. Upon disassembly, (youtube for teardown vidoes) you disconnect the battery from the logic board anyways, so when you boot the phone up, it does a app check and system check again. Every time the damaged screen was connected to the logic board and then powered on, it would end up in boot loop. The new, undamaged screen, would do the required checks, then boot up like normal.
I will do my best to borrow/rent a camera soon, so I can make a short video to show this works.
I'm not going to promise this will work for everyone but with replicated results, hopefully it's a fix for someone!
I hope

Need Suggestion on Repair

I have a 6 or 7 month old Kaiser branded by AT&T. I got seperated from it late last week, so it ran it battery down till failure. When I went to recharge the phone, it started attempting to boot, staying at the AT&T globe screen and then appearing to boot again, (black screen and momentary vibrate.) With a bit of searching I found the suggestion of boot to loading screen and leave it there to charge. After 6 hours, the battery has a measured voltage of 4.17V so that should be enough, but the phone continues the booting loop.
I tried hard resetting with the two keys and stylus. The phone acted like a normal hard reset with the questions, but when it tried to boot, it continued the reboot loop.
My question, do you think I should attempt to reload the stock AT&T ROM?
I'm new at this so there's a large learning curve. If you guys think this is a low probably solution, then I'll sent it back / buy another one and save the long learning curve. I use this for business so I could spead the learning curve time writing software I get paid for writing.
Thanks,
Bernie
your phone got damaged from battery drain? is that possible?
i think your phone has another problem... i really dont think the battery drain was the reason...
can you go to bootloader if so try flashing new ROM (you will loose data) but again you said you have performed hard reset (partial HR) so your phone is clean!
if you want send your phone back - yes you need to get stocked ROM and stocked SPL back

If you already have Hard-SPL installed and it is a version capable, you may try to put the Rom with a Radio onto the Micro-SD card and re-flash the phone that way. I had an issue where i got a boot loop and it turned out that flashing the radio fixed the issue. I hope you at least had a current backup prior to the hard reset because as of now, there is no way to retrieve it
No worries on the backup, it's backed up daily and I only use it as a data carrier. The only drag of the reset is the time of reloading apps.
I agree it may be more than just software issue due to dead battery, but I have to try everything I can. I've back on my old Moto smart phone and it's just not the same, hahahaha.
Now back to studying Kaiser ROMs and how to.
Bernie
As a follow up for anyone who runs across this in the future. I flashed the original AT&T rom and the problem still exists. I spoke to tech support yesterday and they are mailing out a new/reman replacement. So the problem appears to be terminal.
Thanks guys for trying to help.

[Q] Dropped HTC M7, now boot loop and no recovery

Hi there... new to the forum, but long-time reader, especially over the past two days since I dropped my AT&T HTC M7 (flashed to GPE) on cement and it pretty much died.
I'm out of ideas and could use some help. After the drop, it was stuck in a boot loop, but I was able to get to hboot with volume down. From there, I can access fastboot, but recovery or factory reset options just trigger the boot loop again. During the loop, it shows the Google logo (or HTC logo when flashed to stock) for 15-20 seconds and then reboots. Physical damage to the phone is not too substantial, and I have unfortunately extensive experience opening it up from repeated attempts to fix the purple tint issue with bad modules from eBay, so I checked inside and everything is intact.
Over the past two days I've flashed RUUs and recoveries like crazy, downgraded and upgraded hboot, changed CID, etc. I can oem lock and unlock... fastboot kicks out an error when I do it, but the status in hboot is changed when I reboot into the bootloader. Flashing ROMs and recoveries works like a charm, so does erasing cache. What I mean is that the process works exactly like before in fastboot, and I can see the splash screen logo change, so I know it's taken effect, but NOTHING gets past the boot loop. I am thinking the drop resulted in a corrupt partition, but since I can't get into recovery I haven't been able to find any way to do anything about that. If it was physically broken, it just doesn't seem like I would be able to do everything I can. I initially thought maybe it was a busted/stuck power switch, but that works perfectly navigating hboot menus and nothing ever auto-selects or anything like that, which I would expect.
Aside from the fact that I really like this phone, and that I really don't want to have to pay to replace it, I feel attached to it since I've dismantled it successfully to repair more than once and flashed ROMs many times in the past without issues. I've just run out of ideas, and of course I can't go on much longer without a phone.
Does anyone have any experience with this or hunches I can try out?

Thanks clsA. I'm surprised by that since in my experience a broken motherboard results in a much more substantial and obvious failure, but I guess the point is moot if I can't get into recovery to try anything else.
There isn't much of a market for new motherboards, and my experience with eBay sellers for oem components on this device makes me think trying to replace it there would be a fool's errand. I guess I could buy a used M7, but on the other hand the damn thing has basically been nothing but problems. The defective camera turned to garbage in under a year and one drop killed it? Unless anyone has another suggestion, I guess it's time to cut my losses on this thing. I may feel a sentimental attachment because I've nursed it along so much, but damn... a phone is a phone and this one has been a LOT more problematic than any other one I've had.
Gotta thank you again clsA! Your words of doom made me feel that extra bit wreckless, so I decided if the phone was cooked anyway I might as well tear it down and try whatever I could... firmly reseating cables and squeezing heatsinks, etc. Low and behold, I reassembled and the problem is fixed! I'm not sure what the exact issue was, and I won't be surprised if it comes back at some point down the line, but I'm back up and running tonight and that's a hell of a lot more of a victory than I was expecting.
So... it wasn't a motherboard issue, but it was hardware related.
I should have posted on here when this first happened. I love xda!

5.6 update bricked my Fire Tablet 7 5th Gen

Boy am I upset about this. So I get the update and I even liked it looking around at the new freed up internal storage. Well, I clean my history, run ccleaner, etc. like I normally do to restart and when I restart it will not pass the fire screen whatsoever. Now this tablet is not and has never been rooted or tampered with in any malicious way. Launcher hijack and things from this forum are the only tweeks used. It will not work.
I have tried factory reset dozens of times, restart, anything I can do from the hardboot blackscreen (I guess it is called). Somehow managed to make it run the initial setup once, ran through hours of fixing it back the way it was. Restarted it again, bricked again. I can never manage to factory reset it like normal again and I mean I've tried 30 times by now. Only "Fire" loading screen. Has anyone seen this? This is not fair.

Yes - I have (indirectly) seen this on numerous unrooted Amazon Fire devices from several generations following a major OTA update. In most cases the device is NOT recoverable unless the bootloader is unlocked (not possible on 5th-7th gen devices). Boils down to a borked update which is not totally unexpected given the manner in which they are engineered and administered by Amazon. Clearly a very high percentage work without issue. Still sucks if you're a member of the substantial minority...regardless of size. You can try giving Amazon support a call...they might throw you a coupon that can be used against a future purchase (including deeply discounted Amazon/Fire devices during "Black Friday" week).
Just an update on this...
After a few days of not being able to use it I powered it on for the umpteenth time and it properly went through factory reset mode. I was able to manually download the 5.6 update again and it is finally back to normal. Funny thing is I now have even less internal storage than before but at least it is working now. That was a huge inconvenience and I still have no clue what happened.

Note 4 Reboot Problem with Weird Temporary Solution

I'll try to make this short.....
I am using N910T3. Phone was charging in car while using (stop by roadside). Out of sudden it shutdown and went into reboot loop and the phone is extremely hot. I took the battery out for soft reset and try to turn on again. Phone will freeze at different screen (Lock Screen, Home Page, Samsung Logo, Powered by Android) and give two separate vibration before reboot.
I thought it is battery problem so I bought a new battery to try, but still the same problem. So I went on to backup all file before I perform hard reset. While doing that, I find out the phone can be use for longer before reboot if it was stay off for a long time. So I have this crazy idea: put it in a fridge. Surprisingly it works! The phone will not reboot anymore and I can manage to backup all file before doing anything else. Also, the phone will not charge if you plug in right after a few reboot.
Then, along with the fridge method, I perform factory reset through normal android setting. Now it will just stuck at powered by android screen while in reboot loop. I then try to flash with Odin, multiple times. Flash by Odin is complete, phone restart, then it freeze and reboot, at different screen (Installing system update, Erasing, powered by android).
Out of frustration I try with the fridge method to flash, and IT WORKS AGAIN!!!. The phone can now boot to welcome screen where you first setup your phone. However, it will then freeze again and reboot while doing so.
There was only this one time, where I left the phone off for a day after flash with a previous stock ROM, turn it on and skip as much setup as I can, finally reach the homepage screen, then will stay on without any reboot issue. I thought I finally fix it. I then power off the phone, put in my Sim Card and SD Card, power it on, then again, reboot issue appear.
I tried flash with latest stock ROM, previous stock ROM (one updates away), flash any stock ROM with pit file. I sometimes will get error code on device after flash (can't remember the exact error). I also cannot boot into recovery mode without flashing a twrp. Sometimes if success, I will get straight to Lock Screen without going through the phone welcome setup process. But again, none of these I tried can solve the reboot loop.
I may went too far and mix up all steps to the phone. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Or is my phone, as I believe, has a faulty motherboard that cause the reboot loop? Thanks in advance for reading through my problem!
Hello there, I had a Tmo Note 4 which I loved it until the end, it's a hardware problem and there is no fix for it unless you replace the board, by the time you buy the board and what you need to pay for labor you're going to expend a few hundred dollars, I also tried the freezer method but it finally the phone gave up, it does not turn on anymore. That was my experience. Good luck bud.

Factory reset has not restored Auto-Rotate, Active Edge, and the "ear sensor" when making calls

Hi!,
I'm a long-time reader of this forum, but this is my first post. In the last few days, something happened (I wish I could pinpoint exactly what) where I ended up restarting my phone and it entered a continuous boot loop. The phone was receiving updates per normal and may have received an update not that long ago that required some kind of restart, but I'm not confident about that. Either way, the phone was restarted and it entered into a permanent boot loop.
Before restarting, I'm confident the "ear sensor" that turns the screen off when I'm on a call as functioning. I'm also confident the auto-rotate functionality of the phone was working perfectly.
After I tried to factory reset the phone from the power-volume reset options, I actually ran into a TON of trouble trying to get the phone to properly reset. It tooks me countless tries to eventually get the phone to start after resetting it over and over again. I was stuck trying to get the phone to actually move through the setup steps. SUPER frustrating. I actually went to sleep while the phone was somewhere in the middle of setting up and when I woke up the phone somehow eventually made it through some setup steps.
I'm now using the phone as I normally would, but it's very odd. The phone is a LOT more unstable. At least 3 of the sensors I had working have just completely stopped working.
The phone is in otherwise perfect condition. I'm genuinely confused about how I should go about trying to resetting this thing to a pure stock configuration and slowly installing apps again to make the experience what I'd want.
And no, I'm not a super power user. I am a strong engineer happy to do crazy things like flashing bootloaders and whatnot, but I'm honestly confused about where to start. I understand other versions of this device may have had corrupted persist partitions during updates -- those problems seem like my problems -- but I don't know how I should go about simply flashing my phone at the lowest level into something stock that I can try to build back from.
And obviously when talking to google support their suggsetion is that I mail them the device and wait 10 days without a phone. I'm confused about how that could EVER be a reasonable way to get a phone repaired, sigh -- phones are not toys, they're pretty critical to the day-to-day work of so many people including myself. I'm pretty disappointing with that approach from Google and I had always considered them much better than that before this experience.
Anyway, I'm really lost and I'd love to understand how to repair the software on my phone.

You did not provide the most important information we need- whether your phone is bootloader unlocked. Probably not, otherwise you would have already flashed it with a full Google image, which returns the phone to "out of the box" condition. You need to determine whether you can unlock your bootloader. If you cannot unlock (allow oem unlock is off and or greyed out in Dev options) then you will not be able to fastboot flash ANYTHING. If that is your case, the next best thing is flashing a full OTA image (sometimes called a rescue OTA) from recovery mode using the OTA via ADB option. This means you need fastboot/adb installed and working on your PC. Instructions on how are on the same Google dev page for OTA's.
So, my phone's bootloader is not unlocked. But I have an update for the crowd that may one day find this. I know your frustration and I can report that my phone is once again fixed.
A day (or two) after I sent this, a set of updates came down to my phone. And WebView was updated. That restored all of my sensors and also restored most of my crashing applications. It was an incredibly odd experience.
My phone once again functions. And the nightmare of owning a Google phone and talking to Google support has ended.
