My Amateur Tablet In Dash Car Installation

I thought I'd share this here, in case anyone is interested, and to not go off topic in this thread in the Q&A section that was interested in some detail of my build.
I couldn't find an aftermarket stereo that was as customizable, or had as many features as I'd like. My car is a 02 Mitsubishi Lancer which also is designed for a single DIN stereo, which limited my selection as well. I decided a while back that I wanted to attempt a tablet dash install, and when the Nexus 7 came out, I decided it was time to start on this project.This was my first attempt working with fiberglass, bondo, vinyl wrap, and I'm sure a few other aspects of the project I'm missing.
I failed to take pictures at all steps, as it was trial and error for awhile anyways. Here are some photos of some of the process and a parts list.
Also my Home Screens I created for this very purpose.

RadioTrim Piece found in a junkyard that I cut the innards out of and filled with fiberglass and bondo. My car dash originally looks something like this.
So I had to create something that would house a 7" tablet, and also relocate my temperature controls.
Radio Trim Piece covered with Adhesive Promoter and paint.
Nexus 7 without Radio Trim. Backing is a piece of pegboard cut to fit in dash.

Thank you, yep, I still have the original Evo 4G for my phone. I just have a tasker shortcut to toggle a Portable Hotpsot. It's only 3G but its worked pretty well so far

looks nice! the work with the fibre glass is very good!
the only issue I have is the use of an inverter, couldnt you have got a in car usb adapter? as this would mean 1 less power conversion.

Assuming you're leaving the Nexus 7 in the dash, aren't you worried about the heat?

Thanks, I was just going to use a USB adapter, but I tried the 3 I already owned, and none of them would register it was charging. I bought a 4th that I thought would do the job, and had the same problem. I'm sure its possible with the right charger, and I may end up switching it out later. I just ended up being impatient and went with the inverter lol.

That is a concern. It's been in the car for maybe 24 hours now and no problems yet, but I plan on running out to my car to check it on my breaks and lunch tomorrow and probably throughout the work week to see how it holds up. If it becomes an issue I may need to take it out, if the car will be sitting for long stretches of time, or find another solution.
I saw a thread awhile back where someone else bought some sun shades to try and keep the temperature down inside the car. I guess we'll see how it holds up over the next few days.

Thanks, good to hear others havent had overheating issues with similar installations.
I've been looking into this stuff for the last couple months now and I don't think I've seen either of those two builds, thanks.
I know this instructables build and too many random YouTube videos to list on different in-dash installs is what got me finally started in on this project.

You might want to consider some kind of retractable or removable cover. Couple of reasons. One...it can keep direct sunlight off the unit. That would probably be the biggest issue with this setup. Second, it would deter theft. Generally, a thief might not risk breaking into a car to guess what's behind curtain #1...if you know what I mean. However, seeing a full blown tablet in a home made setup (e.g. not built into the vehicle/easy to steal) might be too tempting for some crack head.
Mostly blocking indirect sunlight though...

had an acer a100 perm installed in my dash for several months even here in sunny florida i only got heat warnings when the sun was directly hitting the tablet, using a windshield shade when parked was sufficient to keep the heat warnings from coming on
i'm waiting for the pogo pin dock to be released before the nexus 7 gets a spot in the dashboard, i dont want a perm install again as i like using this tablet outside of the car too

Thanks for the tips, and again its good to hear these reports of other tablet installs with minimal overheating issues. I checked on it today at lunch and it was hot to the touch, but functioning fine, i believe the temperature on the tablet read 134 F..... It was maybe 80 here outside in WI today. I think I'll definitely be investing in a windshield shade to be on the safe side at the very minimum.
I have a Transformer Prime for my other tablet and at this point I was going for a perma install look, although it isn't all too difficult to remove from the dash if needed.

Oh AHeavens, you're a neighbor then. So you know we top the hundreds a few weeks every summer. So if a 80 degree day warms the tab to 135, imagine what one of our 105 days would do to it!
Not to mention our winters where it gets to -35 to -40!

I've installed the Nexus 7 in my WRX too. The trick to getting USB charging to work via a cig adapter is to put a USB hub inline. I pulled apart a tomtop GPS charger and wired it into the factory stereo wiring then plugged a USB hub into it and then the N7 (and my Galaxy S3) into the hub and they both charge nicely.
Having trouble with the audio output though, it is horrible... it buzzes every time i touch the screen and it buzzes when wifi is active and it is just generally crap.
I would like to plug in a USB soundcard (DAC), something like the Fiio E10 but then i wouldn't be able to charge the tab while USB OTG is active.
I was hoping that the pogo pins on the side would allow charging whilst the USB dock connector could be used for OTG but it doesn't look like it will work since both the pogo pins and USB connector go to the same usb switch internally.
I might put up a thread on my WRX N7 install.

I put my nexus 7 in my dash for 3 hours one day it turned off on me... I assume because it was too hot.
For now I remove it when I get to work and leave it in the car when I am home. I have no issues in the garage. Only problem is the place I mounted mine is a perfect fit and no room for the usb charging cable till I modify the hood but I am hoping for the pogo dock soon.

Stock Samsung Galaxy S3/Note 2/S4 Micro USB Cable Modification

Since the plastic housing in the micro USB end of my USB cable was falling apart, I decided to open it up to see what's inside. The following will be half a recount of what I did and half instructional directions.
The cable actually uses a very surprising design. The wires aren't soldered onto the micro USB receptacle, but instead there are vampire teeth (because they puncture two holes into the wire) like contacts on the plug that pierce into the wire through the insulation.

The wires are threaded into this green plastic retainer through each of the 4 holes. Directly above each hole, there is a letter in the recessed triangle area shown below but they are so small that they are invisible to my Note 2's camera.
The letters read from left to right as follows: R W G B - corresponding to Red, White, Green and Black respectively as shown in the above picture.
And here is a closeup of the vampire teeth contacts:
Note that there are only 4 contacts - there isn't one for pin 5 ID, meaning you can't make it an OTG plug.
What I did was ditch the original cable for a 3 metre long one. I just so happened to have a broken 3m Apple Lightning Cable lying around, so I cut the Lightning connector and stripped the white cable by about 1 cm, leaving the individual coloured cables unstripped.
In order to remove the cable anchor, I had to strip it off the original cable like you would with a regular wire (without cutting through the core and pulling the insulation off), cut it lengthwise (horizontally/inline with the micro USB connector) then remove the twisted wire and foil shielding. Then from the inside of the anchor I also had to remove the remnant cable insulation to accommodate for the new cable.
Then in the correct order, I insert the four wires into the green plastic retainer and snap it back against the vampire teeth contacts. To ensure they make good contact, I used a pair of pliers to clamp the green plastic retainer into the dark grey vampire teeth holder with just enough force to not break the plastic (if that made sense). At this stage, plug the cable into the phone and then to a computer to make sure it is making good contact to avoid having to open it up again.
I then re-assembled the metal case (noting the up/down orientation) and crimped the wire anchor securely onto the new cable.
To re-install the two halves of the cable anchor, I used a generous amount of brush-on super glue on anything that needed it, also noting the up/down orientation of the parts. If unsure, assemble the connector without any glue to ensure the correct orientation.
And this is the finished product! It is as close to original as I could make it without using the "traditional cut-both-cables-and-reconnect-Frankestine-style-using-heatshrink" method. As seen here, the cut made to the cable anchor is visible but it seems like a very stable bond.
The plastic casing is almost as if it hadn't been opened before.
Now I have a custom-made 3m micro USB cable that looks like the stock one, but with much more flexibility!

Are you getting a full charge strength through it (using something like GCC to measure)? All the microusb cables I've bought thus far won't carry but maybe 700, if I'm lucky; generally about 400.

I suppose I am getting a full charge current. It's the same reading as the stock cable, anyway. 1698 mA is about 1.7 A.

Update: Realistically though, I think it only charges at around 300 mA, which leads to my Note 2 to charge to only 80% in 8 hours. How disappointing. I should've known better than to use a cheap generic cable that was obviously too thin.

The ONLY cable I trust is from monoprice: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5457&seq=1&format=2 (you can also find it on amazon).
They clearly specify 24AWG rating for power wires (max 3.5A), and 28AWG rating for signal. Plus you get ferrite core filter, which I suspect only wrapped around power wires to filter out any high current spikes and to keep EMI away from signal wires, and gold plated connectors. I have been using these wires at home and in my car for years. For $1.20 (for 3ft) and also in black or white and 1.5ft, 3ft, 6ft, 10ft, and 15ft variation you can't beat it.

No, only have 6ft version; found it to be the most ideal length in the car and also at home/work.
With a wire that thick, 15ft will not be a problem since you will have a very small voltage drop.
The problem with ebay and some other cheap amazon cables, they use pc usb wires intended for 500 mA standard.

I was looking for a high quality USB cord. All of them have been pos (plural form) I just ordered 3...for that price you can't beat it.... Just need a spare charger that gives me a rated 1.8 minimum. I see it's an ongoing problem with the cords and or chargers when it comes to these phones. This really helped. Thanks

It might be possible for me to go down to an electronics shop, buy a long 4 core 24-ish AWG cable and make my own high-current USB cable from my existing cable.

I just don't see how in the world you got the white cover off.
My phone slid onto the floor while charging and I guess landed just right. It bent the end of my oem cable (the only freaking cable I had that would charge "quickly")
It is bent at about a 45 degree angle. It also pulled the white casing apart a little.
Since the cable is pretty much useless now, I decided to try to pry that piece open so I could look inside and see if there was anything I could do to "fix"it.
I have been trying for 30 minutes and I cant get it apart. It won't budge except that it is starting to crack.
I guess I'm just not capable of doing these things.

Mine just so happened to conveniently break along the seam on one side, so I just needed to lift it up. Also, I'd consider myself to be pretty good at taking things apart without breaking them, then reassembling it to look like it hasn't been opened before.

I'd be curious to hear your experience, I wonder how thick or fragile it is. I'd buy one to test but I am not in the US and would have to import it.

I ordered one a week or two ago. One of my wireless charging pads (which I didn't have any of, so I had to order a couple) arrived yesterday, but still waiting for the receiver coil. Hopefully any day now.
Edit: bah, I forgot, it's being shipped from HK; it'll be a while yet (the pads came from the US).

They are pretty thin. I've never use one quite like that, but I used the external pads for the Note 2 that I retro fitted into my old Verizon Galaxy Nexus... and it worked extremely well.
I ended up hooking it up to the POGO pins and taping it onto the battery I had to do a little case modding to make it all fit in a normal Incipio Feather case (basically cut a back plate in half, but I had like 5 of them).
So it works really well. The problem I see here though is you are eating up the USB port all the time. With the thin profile cable, I wouldn't attempt to unplug it many times. Just leave it and forget it. Fortunately the G2 has a great battery. My Verizon G2 has this built in, and I Qi Wireless Charge every night.
The Coils are thin, but thick enough to forbid the use of a thin case like a Incipio Feather. If you use this, you are best off using a TPU case that is flexible.

player911 has nailed the situation. My plan is to 'switch over' entirely to wireless charging for the most part, and wifi file transfers -- I don't want to be unplugging/plugging the usb connector in at all. I figure one more charging pad (total 3) should do it... 1 at work, 2 at home kinda thing.
The eBay version of the amazon listing linked seems to suggest it will come with a case (the one pictured). I can't imagine why I would be asked to pick a colour otherwise black or white, when ordering. Yet both listings state "1 piece", so who knows. Will report what I end up with when it arrives. My S3 had the pogo pins so that you could use wireless or usb for charging but I never went that route at the time. The use of the usb port on the G2 did give me pause but I'm going to give it a go.

I would give it a go too. Perhaps temporarily until a internal solution pops up (bound to happen). Even if it doesn't come with a case, TPU cases are a dime a dozen.

How thick is the coil? Do you think it is possible to fit it under the back cover? Because I'm planning to do that and run the cable through a hole I want to cut in the back cover so that I can plug it in the usb connector.

Eh that isn't too bad. Looks fine IMO. Besides you don't really need to use the USB port with the Wireless Storage option (awesome feature) and Qi Charging.
So if the port is unused, the also acts like a port saver to keep dirt and lent out.
If you feel lucky and want to further reduce thickness, you can open that package up and remove just the coil. The packaging is basically a thick plastic sticky back that is folded over. Removing the outer plastic housing will cut down 1-2mm. Inside the hard plastic cover, there is the actual coil that is in a black square sticker. The Coil itself is round. On mine, I removed the outer shell and trimmed the unused outside area around the coil. Creates a smaller footprint and gets even thinner.
My goal with my Galaxy Nexus was to fit it in a hard Incipio Feather Slim Case. As it is, any TPU case should work though.

it is thin, but I don't if there is enough space under the backcover, I've never removed it.
I'm still testing it, if my readings are correct it is charging the G2 with at least 400 mA.
Now I've moved it to check how much does the positioning matter.

I've charged it from 50% to 100% using this stuff, it was charging with ~450 mA

Qi is a slow charge. I use mine for my desk and nighttime charging.

I've ordered two different kinds, one is the same as Wizard7 that purports 500 mA output and the other purports 750 mA output. I've received neither one yet although according to tracking, the 750 mA one is finally slated for delivery today. But it has a longer cable that I'll figure out how to fold or contend with.
While I fully expected qi charging to be slower, I have to admit I hoped it would be faster than PC USB at least. It would have been a decent solution if I didn't "lose" use of the usb ports but I guess as long as it charges overnight, I can't complain.

Sooo which qi chargers do you guys recommend?

Magnetic QI Car Dock for Turbo Ballistic?

Has anyone tried magnetic car dock chargers on the Droid Turbo?
I have the Droid Turbo Ballistic Nylon 64gb edition. I read that it has metal weaved into the backing so I was hoping to see if it would work with magnets.
I have the iMagnet but it doesn't hold well. I holds but given my 86 CRX shakes rattles a lot, it eventually slides down and falls off.

I have the Droid Turbo Ballistic Nylon 64gb edition. I read that it has metal weaved into the backing so I was hoping to see if it would work with magnets.
I have the iMagnet but it doesn't hold well. I holds but given my 86 CRX shakes rattles a lot, it eventually slides down and falls off.

I would love to know this too, I am looking at this phone and the fact that there is no dedicated car dock (with built in charging and/or audio is keeping me from pulling the trigger. A neat magnetic option would be great for the charging portion, then the only annoying part will be the aux cable being on the top of the phone...

Contacted Air Dock and they responded the following:

I guess we'll know by next week. Instead of AUX, I'll likely go with bluetooth audio for a wire free setup.

I wouldn't recommend the airdock. In would likely be okay on a desktop/table. But my nexus 5 (smaller and lighter than the droid turbo) is quite finicky on it. I backed the kickstarter and it has numerous issues. The sticky material for the mount on the glass is too thin. So it almost rips when you try to take it out of the car. The magnets help with the nexus 5, but not all qi devices have the magnets. The USB port is inexplicably on the top instead of the bottom, so the USB cable gets kinked and tends to fail. All in all it seems like it needs a full revision before it's reasonable. I wish it had a small lip on the bottom for the phone to rest against, that way the magnet/sticky plate would work just about vibration, instead of vibration + gravity. I've had my n5 fall off several times.

That is NOT a qi charger. It claims "more efficient than qi", but it's designed for their custom phone case to add wireless charging to phones that don't have it like the iphone and S4.

So Ballistic Nylon probably doesn't stick as well to the "sticky" surface the Air Dock has and is therefore rated "Fairly well"

I know what you mean. I had the Air Dock prior and ended up breaking it when I tried to take it apart to remove a magnet that was causing my phone to lock (Moto G).
In all honestly, from taking it apart, it is basically a small QI charger with magnets lined up in 4 corners. The design is pretty poor and there is plenty of room for improvement. I'll try building my own based off that design and your idea of having a lip and loop back when I'm done.

I have the Air Dock and used to use it with my Droid Maxx...but just picked up the Turbo with Ballistic Nylon this past weekend. I probably wouldn't recommend it...unless all the roads you drive on are super smooth. It holds it just fine most of the time, but if you hit any decent bumps, expect to be picking your phone up off the floor. Bumps that did not affect my Maxx on the Air Dock at all either shift or cause my Turbo to fall off. I just ordered the iOttie Easy Flex Qi Dock to replace it. It's a shame though, as I did really love it.
Also...if you do happen to go with one of the magnetic docks. Disable the Motorola Flip Case app, or else the magnets in the dock cause it to believe you have the flip case on.

I always use Pro Clip holders. I got one for my GNEX and have since stretched it to fit my new Turbo. MicroUSB charging cable built right into the console. They also offer magnetic solutions too.

AirDock has been redesigned and is in a Indiegogo campaign right now. Check out the new specs - has NFC for things like turning your Bluetooth on and off....

Tzumi Magna Mount
I just bought this mount at Walmart for $10. It's on the electronics section it's called Tzumi Magna Mount. I am in no way a supporter of Walmart but this actually is a decent car mount. It's small and strong magnet held up even with my cell phone being plugged in and talking on the phone going over some of the really rough roads in Columbus Ohio and never fell off. My only question is where should I place the magnet to not interfere with the wireless charging when I set my phone on the charging station?

To answer your question, the Qi circuitry is about 2/3 the way down the back of the phone. It's not centered in the back, it's somewhere in the lower third. That's why the triple coil Qi chargers work very well, because they hit the charging spot no matter how placed.
For single coil charger, you have to place the phone very off center.
Anyway put this magnet in the UPPER 1/3 of the phone to leave the bottom third free for the Qi charger.

If you have to connect something to charge, what's the difference between this and just connecting it normally without losing DASH charging?

maybe you just come home and put your phone on to wireless charging dock instead desk. And you dont care how long it will take to charge. I was on wireless charging on my previos phone (Nexus5) and it was perfect for me it feels good forget about charging.

I thought that I'd miss wireless charging, especially since I invested in Qi chargers in the house and cars but I found dash charge to be a LOT more convenient.

Same here. I thought I would miss qi charging, but I've been okay without it. I bought a couple USB-C docks for my nightstand and work desk. I'm not using dash charge on them but it charges quickly enough without it.

Purchased one of these and it arrived today. It's a bit picky with detection on my two upright wireless charging docks requiring it be sat at an angle, but it does work. Flat docks may work better. Charging time is assumed slower but I don't have an exact number. Last thing to note is the angled USB-C plug, you won't be able to pull it out without giving the ribbon cable some slack by moving the pad downward, so if you're using a case over the pad you may need to remove it on occasion as needed.

want to order one tonight. i noticed the tag has adhesive. is it strong? id hate to gunk up the back of my phone.

There is only one small strip (2cm x 0.5cm) of some sort of 3M adhesive. I haven't bothered taking the protective layer off to try it since it will be underneath a case and I anticipate having to move it to access the USB port anyways as I mentioned.

ok cool so it stays stable under the case without the adhesive. just ordered one. dash is great but the convenience of dropping my phone on a pad at night is great

Could you put this inside a case, and leave it in? Theoretically leaving the phone as a wireless charging device.
The question is: Would this work through a case? Would efficiency be decreased?

Depends on the case.I'll be putting mine between the phone and case. Its trial and error with thickness .though the manufacturer says i think like .2mm I'll leave it in all the time.kind of like a dust cover too

I got my hands on an ordinary flat charging pad and the phone properly charges positioned pretty much anywhere on the pad.

Cases typically aren't thick enough to prevent the system from charging unless the distance and position of the coils is already at its limit, like with my upright charging docks which were made with smaller phones in mind. Nicer and newer chargers will have multiple coils for better coverage. Case materials like metal however will prevent all charging through them, which is why wireless charging and NFC has been excluded from many recent phones. Increasing distance does decrease the efficiency but probably not to a significant amount in this scenario.
Certain cases will have tighter tolerances for fitting this device underneath than others. I would say the pad gets about as thick as a US quarter in the middle. You also need enough space around the USB port for the plug and ribbon cable. I will try the stock OnePlus 3 sandstone case once it arrives, but my current $3 clear vinyl case is fine, just a bit wobbly when laying on a flat surface.

got my adapter on Thursday.Got married Sunday and was out of town and in hotels for a few days so i got some good testing time with this. it works great. im using it with an anker qi charger. i have it behind a rubber case and i have no problems with it. it charges slow obviously but its stupid easy and at least with the anker qi charger there is a big sweet spot.

I must be missing something but this thing seems to me to be a power pack that you plug in via the sub port, however small.

It's a Qi compliant inductive coil for wireless charging

Ahhh. I though this small metal strip was all you needed. Should have paid more attention to it.

Just wanted to confirm that this wireless charging pad fits fine underneath the official Sandstone case from OnePlus. You will still have to remove the case to remove the plug to access the USB C slot, but other than that it works just fine.

Complete utter rubbish based on what it actually does:
1. Charges at only ~650 mAh rate (slow to hell, my USB PC & Laptop & Tiny client is faster then this, I can get up to 1400mAh with my set up(s) if not using DASH charge).
2. Can not plug OTG-USB, connect to a PC at will or use DASH charge if not removed.
3. Not all protective cases are ok with this external QI pad.
Based only on these 3, it's a complete fail...... and so on... until it is a complete and utter fail yet again.
Verdict: a total waste of money.
