My method is from this Thread
After alot of taking from this site, I am prepared to give something back!! I can make boot-screens and splash screens for you, if you like.
I will also upload my own customs, ready to flash!!
Here is the first set, I found a Picture of a little boy wearing a wizard costume.
It contains just Bootscreens, will not change anything else, you will not lose data.
They are only for Wizards!!
As requested I will share my "Method of Manipulation"... Hope you can follow along... As a side-note I will try to explain what makes an Image complex. If the image has clouds or gradients or highly detailed or a lot of black with white dots. It will be hard to compress. If it is a solid color it will compress easily. Sometimes I "pen" out the subject and put it on a soild color background to save the image quality..
First I open the file in photoshop. And crop it to 480x640x96dpi. If the file has a "complex-background" I go to "Part One;Step one. If it has a solid color background go to "Part One;Step 4"
Part one:
1.Using the pen tool (or your selection tool of choice) I create a work path of the subject (foreground).
2.Then I create a new 480x640x96dpi image And drag the subject (foreground) into the new document.
3.If the background is important to the image I then clear the selection.
4.Then I choose "save image for web". When the image opens up into the save for web sub-program, I choose "GIF" format, resize the image to 240x320 using "bi-cubic smoother".
5.Then I manipulate the "Lossy", "Colors",and "Dither" values until I come up with an image I find pleasing. Try to keep the "optimized" file size down below 15k to 20k if it is just the background. And less than 27k if it is the whole picture.
6.I then save the file as HTC.GIF in My "equinoxe boot/splash kitchen".
If the HTC.GIF is just a background go to "Part TWO".
If it is the whole Image, continue to part 7
7.Then I open the kitchen and right click on the HTC.GIF file and choose "edit". this opens the file in MS PAINT. Choose "save as" and save it as a "24-bit Bitmap".
8.Then I say a prayer, and click on "htc-compres.bat" and hope for a 65536 byte file. I always end up with a 67235 or something the first try.
If it is not, go back to photoshop and start over at "step 4" until you get a perfect 65536 bytes.
Part two:
"If the HTC.GIF file you saved was just the background"
1.Open the HTC.GIF file in Photoshop.
2.Resize it to 480x640x96 dpi
3.Change the mode to RGB
4."Drag and drop" The layer from "Part One; Step 2" onto The HTC.GIF file while holding "SHIFT" Move it around if it doesn't land right until it looks right.
5.Go to "Part One; Step 4"
Good Luck
Just an FYI, the 3rd splash screen should really be 320x320 so that it shows up correctly in landscape mode. The design still mainly needs to be kept in the 240x320 area (ie: the left side of the 320x320) as it doesn't get stretched.
To be honest, I don't know how many people start their phones in landscape mode, so its probably not a big issue, but if you see the original welcomehead.96.png files, you'll see they are 320x320 for this reason.
Thanx mfrazz, changing now!
Found the coolest little 3-D devil!! Added a welcome screen.
Made a new Black Windows Logo (Inspired by inneyeseakay). Moved the original here.

There are actually three screens:
The first is the "HTC-Logo" screen it has no IPL/SPL.
The second is the "Splash" screen it has the IPL/SPL.
The third is the "Welcome" screen (usually windows mobile)
The "zip" files replace the LOGO and SPLASH screens.
The "cab" files replace the third screen.

Like many other's i have tried to hop onto the skinning boat after the release of metamorph.
and i think like many others i have problems with those .9.png files. i read stericsons write up on them but i cant make any sense out of it.
therefore i would like to ask from any of you that do understand them: could you make a short video describing the editing of 1 file?
since i'm a visual kind of guy this would 99% sure make me understand it and make me able to continue with my theme.
i would really really apreciate this guys..
you can power up draw9patch and play with it and you will understand it..
few thing you should know
when you load a regular png file(not .9.png) the tool automatically expend the size by 1 pixel each side(up down left right)
then you can edit
the left and top sides represents stretchable area.. you should put there one or two black pixels.. no more!(for each side)
the right and bottom sides are represents the content area.. you can fill it how you like.. but keep it one line for each side
then you need to save it.. when you save it the tool adds a .9 to the end of the file name
the next move is to compile the file with eclipse........
i dont have time to make a vid right this second, but im willing to help you out...first tell me, have you checked out the source code? It has all the .9.png's UNCOMPILED, which means that they still have the guides drawn and you can take a look at certain images to get an idea of how the guies SHOULD be drawn for a certain image.
Brief explanation...The TOP and LEFT sides of the 1px border are where you will draw a single (or double is allowed) guide marker to mark where the image will be stretched. You are allowed up to 2 guides on the top and 2 on the left, but no more.
On the BOTTOM and RIGHT sides of your 1px border you will draw guide markers for the "Content area" of the image. That is to say, if you have a button that will contain text, image, or other content, you draw a line across the bottom edge from one side of the button to the other to center the content in the center of the button. Then the same for the right side to make it centered vertically.
You should check out the source and look at those images in there, that'll help you see what draw9patch does and how certain images should look when they're done.
Then you have to compile the images in eclipse to get them to work right. just start a new Android project and choose "From existing Source", then choose one of the samples that comes with the SDK...i use home.apk. then after you edit the .9.png's with draw9patch, you dump them into a folder (i.e. res/drawable or res/drawable-land) in the project, overwrite whatever images may already be there, and then right click the root of the project in the tree view and go down to "Android Tools" and pick "Export Unsigned package". (it doesnt matter if its signed cuz your just gonna extract it for the images)
This will save an .apk file to your eclipse workspace directory. just copy it to your desktop and extract it to get the freshly compiled .9.png's and inject them into your .apk or update.zip...then sign and flash!
Hope this helps...

ok so the problem for me seems to lie with eclipse, atm i'm stuck on the fact that when i try to open an existing project, i dont have the AndroidManifest.xml and when i extract it from some other theme, it says it cant be parsed. so eehm where exactly should i find a unparsed AndroidManifest.xml or what should be in it?
you already got me a lot further! thanx!
did you try using a different sample application? there are some that throw some errors when i first try to open them as projects but home.apk seems to work fine for me. i tried to figure out why youd be getting that error but i dont seem to get it for any of my samples so maybe its a problem with your SDK? im not sure but here is my AndroidManifest.xml from the home.apk sample, it works for me so it SHOULD work for you. if not you may have a deeper issue going on. anyways just drop the ".txt" from the end of the filename and drop it in [YourSDKdirectory]/platform/Android 1.6/samples/Home/ and then try to open as existing project again. Lemme know if it works...

yeah, you just give the image a 1px border on all sides and then draw the guides on the border and then save it and compile with eclipse...its the same basic thing, the draw9patch tool just automates most of it for you.

Hey, I'm also one of the people who jumped in the Metamorph bandwagon(not that it's bad), and I'm also having trouble with .9.png's.
In my case, I downloaded an existing Metamorph theme, and I'm basically recoloring some .9's here and there. So, is it possible to just open the .9's in Photoshop, recolor them, then save it as normal? or do I still have to recompile it in Eclipse?
Thanks in advance.

hey brotherin ..
i didnt have to do that at all. just make sure you have a fresh .png to work with.
)i.e - ballsack.png - wanna stretch it so the sack is in the middle of png.
)do the lines up top and left like stated .. but the guides really arent that important at the bottom.
)next you will than get it to your liking - watch the right side of screen in the example pane, you can see the image shifting - hence you can shift gradients and such with more guide lines behind the first pixel that you mark for guide line. get it?
)than you save the file from the "File" option as a .9.png file.
)and walla its a .9 that can be shfted with the existing metadata that is there.
just dont get too advanced or imsure it wont work to well.i have edited all kinds of them in PSCS4 and than the .9 editor from HTC. Its hard as **** to do. but it pays off. hope this helps.
like bmfc said, get the uncompiled .9.png from the source. makes it so much easier.
then what I do is
open the source .9.png in cs4
marquee tool, and select all content except the guidelines, make it invisible
save that image as ex. guide.png.
take all the images that look the same i.e pressed/selected/default of the same images
open them and the guide.png in photoshop, copy and paste the modified .9.png onto the guide.png, then I save as the original image, repeat as many times as needed,
then when done with that before I compile, I move all of the images with guidelines to a folder ex. guidelines, so that I will have them for future use.
then follow what bmfc said to compile them in eclipse.
check out this video walthrough for working with the .9.png files.

thanks for the info
the youtube link was a great help
less frustrated....and need improvement but at least getting better and getting the hang of it
the attachment was just for kicks and practice

Hi guys. I took an icon off of a website, and edited it to make the background transparent using paint.net. When i put the icon on my phone it has a black background. I also added another icon from a website that already had a transparent background and that one stayed transparent. any ideas?
the one you created yourself, did you re-save it as a png? if so what version of png did you save it as? 32bit?

they were both already in .png format, but let me check version....
well, I'm not sure where to check that, but if it's the same as bit depth, they are both 32 bit depth (properties/details, bit depth). so that can't be it. or...?
I don't know much on this stuff, just making some shortcuts for some bookmarks. even had to search how to edit the icons. preciate your help.
that's odd. i dont use paint.net (prefer fireworks) but i just download / installed it and went in, made the background transparent (opacity setting in Layers -> Layer Properties) then added a new layer and drew a picture. I then went Save As (choose a location) picked png as my file format and clicked save. I was then shown the Save Config screen where I choose 32-bit and clicked ok and it worked.
Was your process similar?

haha I wish! my process was this.
save file off of website. open file in paint.net. screw around for an hour trying to 'fill' (paint bucket) with transparent 'color'. give up, search for a bit. find that i can just use the magic tool (wand) to select the background area, change tolerance to 25%, edit/cut the selected area and it automatically makes it transparent. select background, make transparent, shrink down to 72 x 72-ish, save file and left on auto detect.
and that was it. the layer stuff confuses me (i understand the concept, but dont know how to work with it) so I didn't mess with layers.
ok, i went in and redid it and its working now. only thing I did differently was when I saved it, instead of letting it autodetect, I chose 32 bit. obviously they're both in 32 bit so I'm not sure what the difference is, but it worked! thanks so much for your help!
It would have been easier if I could just select the shape of the icon and pull it off of the square 'file' that it came as, but I didn't know how to select the image part of the file.
and what's REALLY weird is when I just made the new icon on my phone, i accidentally used the SAME file I was using yesterday instead of the updated version... and it now has a transparent background. WEIRD.
ah yes i hear the auto detect doesn't work as well as one would expect. I'm glad you are sorted now Some advice would if you are going to do more of this in future, acquire a copy of Adobe Fireworks

there's a ghost
never even heard of adobe fireworks, but you can be sure I'll be making more transparent background icons now! I had acquired a copy of photoshop but it takes up a lot of space and I've never really used it, so paint.net was good enough. I'll check out fireworks and maybe even look for some free online intro lessons.
i prefer it over photoshop, even for my day job let me know if you ever need a hand
Hi all.
I thought i would write a basic guide on how to modify a skin apk the way YOU want it. There are some great skins being made, but often the colour scheme is not the way you might like it. I am new to android so if i have made any mistakes please let me know and i will correct ASAP.
Firstly i will say if you modify any skin, please DO NOT post it unless you have the previous developers permission. This is IMPORTANT. They are for personal use only.
First you need to install the following on to your PC:
Android SDK Here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html
Java JDK and JRE Here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
Auto sign Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473580
A good photo editing tool. I use photoshop.
Once installed open the android sdk and download the relevant Android Platforms.
Download the skin apk you want to modify. The apk can be opened with winrar. There will generally be 3 folders a xml and arsc. The two we need to look at are assets and res.The assets folder contains the preview pic and the wallpaper for the skin. The res folder contains all the png files. In res, the drawable folder contains the xml's. drawable-port-hdpi contains the png's for the home screen like the softbar and sense clock. drawable-land-hdpi contains the pngs used in land scape. drawable-hdpi contains the bulk of the png used in the skin
The following is how i changed the carbon fiber orange skin to green.
Extract the Carbon fiber apk. Then i wanted to change to colour scheme from orange to green so i used the res/drawable-hdpi from the evolution skin by extracting with winrar as this uses green png's. Copy the green png from the extracted evolution res/drawable-hdpi to the extracted carbon fiber res/drawable-hdpi. You will need to go through each png and just replace the orange png as the carbon fiber skin has some parts in this file.
Then take a look at the png's in the extracted carbon fiber res/drawable-port-hdpi. You will see the ones used for the home screen button colours (there the one's that are orange) Here is were photoshop comes in. You can remake the buttons or simply edit the colour of the existing png's your choice. I also changed the colour of the clock numbers from silver to green. Then replace your modified pngs with the ones in res/drawable-port-hdpi.
Next you can change the wallpaper and preview pic in the assets/image.
Now you need to add the modified folders with winrar. Open the original orange carbon fiber.apk with winrar and drag the modified assets and res folders from the modified extracted carbon fiber, to the archive. It will now replace the folders. Then close winrar.
Next you need to resign the apk with autosign for it to install. Please read the instructions on the autosign thread. Once auto sign is set up just right click on the modified carbon fiber.apk and click resign APK, wait a few seconds and job done!
I hope this info comes in useful. If i have missed anything please let me know and i will add it.
That's great! Thanks!

It is for launcherpro. I don't use this sorry. it is not a skin but a whole dock replacement.
I have only been using android for around 2 weeks, so i am new to this.
Edit: i took a look and it is a skin for launcher pro. install instructions seem easy: Taken from the readme.txt:
Install:
- Download launcherpro
- On home: Press menu -> Preferences -> Appearence -> Dock background -> Custom
Can anyone tell me, after edit the apk file, how can i change the name of the skin and author?
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

Ive been learning how to do my own PS type work and have come up with a couple sets of glossy button icons with text. So far ive only been a consumer in the Android world and thought it was time to offer a little something should anyone be interested.
The two zip files contain 43 button icons each. One set is a glossy carbon look while the other has a carbon fiber infield with red boarded text. Both sets are .PNG files and if you have any software which will open them feel free to make some more and or change anything you wish. I made these from scratch based upon a tutorial I found on the internet and from hear on place them in the public domain so have at them.
Here are a couple screen of then on my phone. I havent fine tuned the background but you can get the idea of how they look. Using Virtual Desktop you can scale them to any size you wish as well as link them to whatever application your prefer.
Seems im too new here to attach photobucket images.
thanks very nice work.. will look good on my DINC...
Very nice work, you earn my respect, I can just dream of something like this made by me...
Hope those who have DLed these icon buttons have liked them. Im a bit of a noob at the PS aspect of things and noticed that if I were to export the icons they will retain the same qualities yet are substantially reduced in file size. Example being one of them went from 55KB to 9KB and the zip files were 1/10th of what i offered originally. So, if you feel like it grab another set and lessen the load on your CPU.
Im working on a set of small normal size icons that match and offer system setting functions so check back in a day or so.
Added a set of matching smaller icons to the original post list. They are a little larger than normal sized icons and fit 5 across on a Droidx. Remember you can adjust the number of columns and rows in LP to best suit your layout needs.
I guess a word on what to do with all of these...
Use LP Plus allows you to resize all that you add. Download "Desktop Visualizer" from the market and install. You will find DV when you long press for widgets on the home screen.
Ive been using the 3x1 for the larger buttons but found the 2x1 works as well. For the smaller icons use the 1x1 (not the first listed 1x1ss). Once you have them extracted to a folder all you need to copy the folder to your SD card. Ive been putting them in the DCIM/Camera folder. Then when you have chosen the icon size to use you simply browse to the image and then select a function.
Some of the smaller icons need to be associated with an event rather than an application. Instead of tapping Application, choose Other and then "Activities". A new list of options become available to map the icon to whatever you want. Just take a little time and read the smaller print listed under the activity. Some of the display and sound related items are found in the Settings folder.
Ive also found that DLing an app called "Blocco" (free @ Market) and a few of their plug-ins are useful as well. There are plug-ins for Airplane mode and wifi toggle etc. If what you selected doesnt work just drag it to the trash and take another stab. I figured it out so you should be able to as well.
Added the psd file for both types of the carbon button icons. Feel free to make your own by using photo shop or similar software. Just edit the text, reposition it if needed and export the new image. Exporting the image will reduce the file size a lot and help with phone performance.
Included buttons say Market

First of all....VERY nice work. Nice and clean. Second..I downloaded the .psd zip and when I opened it, I didn't find the .psd....only the market.png files (one red and one black). I assume this was an accident, but I wanted to make an icon for TapaTalk. So far your one of the very few that have done TechBuzz and I thank you for that. If you would be so kind to either verify the .psd file and re upload it or make a TapaTalk icon, I would be very greatful. Thank You.
