I am on the latest gingerbread DXJPE. As most of you know Z4Root and Superoneclickroot and Gingerbreak don't work on this firmware.
We have available CF-root by Chainfire, DiP7 kernel, and Overcome which have root in addition to other features.
Myself and others that don't want OC/UV or CWM or Voodoo but want to use Titanium backup, etc want a simple root application or a patch to our firmware.
I cannot understand why can't a straightforward root cannot be done unless you have CWM or OC/UV....
So I am pleading/begging you expert coders/programmers in XDA-PLEASE PROVIDE A SIMPLE ROOT APP/PATCH FOR THE LATEST GINGERBREAD.
THANKS!

I am rooted on 2.3.4 and I don't have CWM. It's super easy to flash with Odin, no harder or longer than rooting with SuperOneClick would be.

May I ask what you used to root?
Update/edit: You have a sprint tab....
I agree, I have tried CF-root,DiP7 kernel and Overcome Gold. I have also posted my problems re: CWM but there seems to be nobody interested. I even asked Chainfire the author of CF-root for a way to root without the "extras" but he said it is not possible.
Maybe I will just be content on what is available?....

DXJPE. I have already tried rooting successfully- it's just that I wanted to have root with the following:
1. Stock boot animation with sound.
2. use of the default recovery instead of CWM.
3. be able to change CSC with no errors
All of the above can be done when I rooted using Z4root or superoneclick but not CF-root or Dip7 or more so not with overcome.
the stock bootanimations its already in the stock and it will only work in the stok !!!
if you rooted with superoneclick or Z4root how come you get CWM ? it only suppose to flash ROOT (superuser and busy box) thats all
to change the CSC ,tbh , its sucks way to do so , so ignore it and don't worry about it i also wanna try update via kies but never had
I think the person who posted the original question has a GSM tab and the guy who replied has the cdma sprint tab. The flash for cdma/sprint won't work for GSM. I might be wrong but if you try to flash with the wrong thing, there's an excellent chance you're going to bork your GSM tab. Same thing applies with the other android device I'm dealing with, the nexus s 4g. The GSM and cdma for ns4g and ns are different. The software and hardware under the Hood are different. Not drastically different but enough to make it so that development for the two types must be separate and aren't interchangeable.

to root a phone it doesn't matter if its CDMA or GSM , what is matter if you flashed rom is not for your tab ,
root only contains SUPERUSER and BUSYBOX and nothing else , what chainfire posted is a Kernel and not Root , but kernel contain both , CWM and Root access , and the kernels are for specific tabs.
my point is to root , it doesn't matter if you are GSM or CDMA , then how Z4root work or Superoneclick ? they just push the busybox and superuser to the system. so basically Root tools aren't that harm to your phone or tab

Are you sure that by only editing the dat file you will also reset the settings to the CSC that you choose? Example are language, frequency settings, applications for the region, etc?
What I know is that the CSC should match a nv_data.bak file for your particular firmware. If there is no match then it will be pointless to change CSC but just changing to any value.
BTW,hacking the cache file and installing the hacked file via CWM also solves the missing PDA and CSC ....

The advantage of android is that non market apps can be installed even without root. IOS in idevices do not allow non appstore apps to be installed unless jailbroken.
Also apps which require root are available for android on the market while you will find similar apps only thru cydia.

Our firmware is DXJPE, w/c is the asian region... I think there is an option for gingerbreak on superoneclick but I personally have not tried it out... Maybe bongski can try it out and see if it works...
@bongski: There is an option on superoneclick for "gingerbreak", just take a look at the available option, it may work for you... I don't have superoneclick on my laptop so I cannot tell you where exactly is that option... Try it out and see if it works...
I don't root my TAB, only on froyo when I want to flash other ROMS, so I can't be of much help here...
Both gingerbreak under superoneclick and the gingerbreak.apk don't work on the JPE firmware. I think the exploit in which gingerbreak is based is already closed by samsung.
the root you are able to achieve is through the rom not the kernel or recovery or any of that. that is not a horrible issue especially since there are only a hand full of roms. what has happened in the epic 4g forum is that some roms rely on kernel root and others rely on rom root, like what we have. rom root is fine for average root users cause you can get into the root directory and install or remove stuff at your whim. the issue will arise when the recovery is in place and roms are being developed. if you have a kernel thats not rooted and you flash a rom that isnt baked with root then you lose root. its kind of a chicken and the egg discussion on the surface. i imagine that kernel and recovery devs can argue the preferred method, but for most end users its moot. from what ive learned devices have a recovery kernel and a "rom" kernel. one gets you up and going and allows recovery to boot and the other will control how the rom runs. people have had some issues when they flash what that think is substantial kernel and use an app like quick boot only to find out they dont have a custom recovery like cwm. however when using 3 finger boot or in our case vol up +power they find the custom recovery. a rooted and properly flagged recovery kernel will boot into the custom recovery from the app or from the hardware induced recovery boot. if you read through oldmacnut's thread he eludes to partial root issues. again when our root comes through an odin of a rom thats got root baked in, you dont get to access all the innards of the device and the possibilities that other devices are seeing.
thats my interpretation of the situation
Hey, i'v understand that lc1 kernel stock is unroot for now, how can i downgrade for rooting?
or should i just wait for someone to release root for lc1?
Thanks.

After that, install Mobile Odin to flash custom kernel and you will get CWM.

Hi,
Used odin to flash a kernel (speedmod 2.8) then install super user from play and etc (mobile odin and titanium backup)
when you use odin you will get yellow triangle and the flash counter will grow but i is no a problem coz' ICS is just around the corner, so you can eventually reset flash counter in ICS
Hope I helped
Cheers
Have a look here too... Just flash using pc Odin.

It is a fair assumption that everything you need is in another thread..
If you have tried a method stated in another thread, then post in that thread if it failed... then your fix will be recorded for posterity and perhaps the thread OP changes the initial post to provide better/improved instructions for other users. This aspect is VERY important to the smooth running of the forum and the main reason why 50 individual threads on unroooting, the content of which are covered elsewhere, essentially render the search function useless.
if you just up and did something without guidance from another thread i suggest you go to square one and visit..

Greetings folks. Been playing with my T-Mobile Galaxy Note for about a week and thought I would put together a little basket of goodies and quick starts to make the transition a little easier for the rest of us. I will keep this short and sweet. Follow up rooting guides posted in post 2. If these help, don't forget to hit the thanks button and/or donate. For anything that's not my work, I'll post/clean up the sources/credits/references tonight. Also, I am testing out a new online storage facility, so mirror these as soon as you can since I might have to bring it down in a month or so. If you need anything that's not here, just ask.
Disclaimer:
1. This post is intended for the T879 only. Some tweaks are necessary to get a full port of the build/baseband from the T-mobile Note to the AT&T Note. Stay tuned.
2. As is common knowledge, you use of any of these files/guides at your own risk and I am not responsible for any damages your may incur in doing so.
1. T-Mobile Note Goodies
a. T879-PRE-ROOTED STOCK SYSTEM IMAGE UVLG3 BUILD - WILL NOT TRIP FLASH COUNTER. https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/3s7FNMjsmCGLMWi. This is the latest build from the OTA update. It has been pre-rooted with the Super user, su, and busybox 1.21 installed. Flash this through ODIN. It will not increase your flash counter. Thanks to roloracer for doing for the i717 first and letting me know this was possible!
b. T879-STOCK RECOVERY IMAGE - https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/3sx0g1iX7W331Ui. This is the stock T-Mobile recovery for the T879. If you rooted using rotohammer's UVLF5 nandroid backup then you are likely stock with the UVLF5 build and cannot get the OTA update to complete because you don't have the stock T-Mobile recovery. Flash this recovery to revert to stock recovery, then the OTA update will complete without aborting and bring you to the UVLG3 build/baseband combo.ii. After you complete the OTA update, flash the pre-rooted system image in 1.b. above for easy root.iii. N.B. If you used Android Revolution's nandroid backup and you already have the UVLG3 build but not the UVLG3 baseband, the OTA update will not initiate because it thinks your phone is already completely updated. Flash the radio below to get the updated baseband to match the UVLG3 build. Speeds are best for me with the matching build/baseband.c. I managed to get DAGr8's AOKP CM9 rom to boot and it was functional except for mounting external_sd so some tweaks are needed. May post a guide on what I did.e. T879-FLASH COUNTER RESET - https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/3sifFwMg3wmcKRi. If you flashed CWM through ODIN you tripped the flash counter. Use this to reset it to zero. Thanks to braway for this for the i717.f. CWM TOUCH RECOVERY - https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/3sFurRZpksbs6k | ODIN FLASHABLE CWM TOUCH RECOVERY https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/3sYujqhSWDjt5I i. Self explanatory. If you don't care about the flash counter, or you are going to reset it, flash this through ODIN to get up CWM recovery up and running.g. Super User CWM - https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/3sRc8Cz8TcpOLC i. Self explanatory. If you don't care about the flash counter, or you are going to reset it, flash this through CWM recovery to get root.
Rooting Guides
General Guides
How to get T-Mobile 879 Galaxy Note into download mode
To get the T-Mobile phone into download mode it MUST be connected via usb to your computer first. Then hold volume button up and down while turning the phone on. When the warning prompt come up, press the volume up button.
Rooting guides.
If you're like most people and couldn't care less about tripping the flash counter (especially since you can reverse it) rooting is easy.
1. Apply the OTA update
2. Download the odin flashable CWM touch recovery in bullet item f. in post 1.
3. Flash that through ODIN
4. Download the super user zip in bulllet point g. of post 1 and flash through CWM. You should now be rooted. Alternatively, download a rooted custom rom - karryt has a UVLG3 build posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838067. I think that rom is rooted. If not just apply the super user zip after installing that rom.
5. If you did not complete the OTA update as stated in 1. before flashing CWM or a custom rom, download the modem in bullet point c. in post 1.
6. Now, download the flash counter reset in e. in post 1 and flash through CWM to reset your flash counter.
7. That's it. You should be cooking. When more roms pop up, you will have your phone in CWM all the time flashing roms and missing calls like a player.
8. Thank rotohammer, Android Revolution, karryt, and easyguy for getting the ball rolling doing all this and posting about it. Thank braway for flash counter reset. Thank me too ( it's just a button ).
If you have an unrooted t-mobile note and you want root without tripping the counter:
1. Apply the OTA update now when you still have the stock recovery.
Do that first. If you wait until after flashing CWM you won't be able to get OTA and will have to use another method (easy enough) to update your phone
2. After your OTA update successfully completes, download the pre-rooted stock image to your computer
3. Flash that image in odin. To do that:
i. Put your phone in download mode.
ii. Click the PDA button and select the tar ball you downloaded
iii. Make certain only "Auto-reboot" and "F. Reset time" are selected
iv. Click start
4. Let the phone reboot
5. Now you should be rooted but WAIT. You cannot use any custom roms just yet. now you need CWM.
6. If you want CWM but are paranoid about tripping the flash counter:
i. Download rom manager from market and use rom manager to flash CWM - Select the version for the i717 if a T879 is not yet available
ii. Now you have CWM and can create your nandroid backups and get started flashing custom roms.
iii. If you prefer CWM Touch, download if from the list in post 1 (fourth in the list) and flash it through CWM.
7. Thank rololancer for showing us i717 folks this was possible. Thank me too
Running T-Mobile T879 Stock rom and radio on the i717
*EDIT: Had to change these instructions a bit
1. Download the pre-rooted image (first in the list above)
2. Download the odin flashable boot.img
3. Put your phone in download mode
4. Start odin.
5. Flash the pre-rooted image
6. Your phone will reboot - keep holding the volume down button so you get back into download mode
7. If you miss download mode, the phone will try to boot but you will end up at a blank screen
7. Turn off the phone, remove the battery, reinsert the batter and power on the phone while holding the volume down button. This will get you back into download mode.
8. Now that you are back in download mode, start odin
9. Start odin
10. Flash the odin flashable boot image from post 1
11. Lastly reboot into CWM and flash the radio for the i717 from here this brew in CWM.
12. That's it.
13. No promises on improvements especially upload speeds. Like I said on jeet's thread ... "Not much of a speed improvement though. The T-mobile Note gives me 10-16Mb down and .8-1.2 Mb up. Best I have gotten with the modem on the I717 is 6.7Mbs down and .4 Mbs up and that is with a fully stock T-Mobile rom running on the AT&T note so the T-mobile lib files are being used. When I flashed the radio on an AT&T i717 rom - AOKP CM9, so lib files built for the i717 were being used, the results were about the same. So, the radio/rom themselves don't present that much of an improvement, but the complete T-Mobile Note definitely gave me more love in the speed department. Still funny though that I cannot get past 1.2Mbs on uploads. Anyhow, seems unless someone is able to edit the amss.bin without breaking the signature, that's the best we can get out of the i717 for now."
EDIT: Got 10Mbs and 8 Mbs down on this modem consecutively, then 3Mbs down. Uploads still 500kps. Then another 9Mbs, so teh modem seems capable of pulling high speeds, just not as consistently as the T879. On the T879 I can hit 9Mpbs and above consistently. Uploads vary between 800kbs and 1.2Mbs.
EDIT2: Last edit. Downloads are more consistently in the 8Mbs - 10Mbs range now with some 3-4Mbs in there.Attached are two speed test screen shots to give you an idea.
Booting I717 AT&T Galaxy Note Roms s
Ok, I have only tried this with DAGr8's AOKP CM9. It boots and is useable but there is an issue with mounting the external sdcard which I was working on but ran out of time. Anyhow, these are the steps to get it booted.
1. Get the rom flashable zip
2. Get CWM specifically for the I717. This will save you a lot of trouble because most devs use assert checks to verify the you're installing the rom on the "correct" device (in this case the i717 not the T879. Safety first, but it can be a pain. I don't think I have that file on the server so do a quick search on the I717 forum for the quincy-att cwm.
3. Flash the rom in CWM
4. Flash the T-mobile boot.img in odin. Alternatively, restore your boot.img from CWM from a T879 backup.
5. Reboot. Don't be alarmed if there is no boot logo (AOKP unicorn). So long as the second Samsung logo pops up at some state ... the one that glows, the rom will continue to boot and you should soon be greeted by the home screen.

Yes, you would flash it through odin. It's only for people who don't want to trip the flash counter. Look at the rooting guides in post 2 and decide which method is best for you. Most people will opt for the nice and easy method in the first guide.

The flash counter tells warranty people if the phone was flashed to non stock roms or other software and modifications via odin. So it can sometimes void your warranty if they(warranty people) are on top of things and do their job.
Braway came up with a program to reset it to look like it was not tampered with. So if you have problems, it can be returned or warrantied without the "I wonder if they will honor this since I modded my phone?" type of guilty questions to self!

I should have also added flashing stuff via CWM does not bump up your flash counter. Putting CWM on your phone via Odin does bump it.

It's up. Third guide in post 2. Gotta say, even with a fully stock T-Mobile image and radio (expect for the amss.bin needed to prevent lagging) the results are still not as great as the T-Mobile Note. The speeds are consistently 5-6Mbs down and .4-.5Mbs up. So uploads, which was the only real problem I suffered on the i717 are still paltry.

Hey
I am new to this forum and new to my latest project.
I want to gain root access to my Samsung Galaxy Note and be able to explore more features and install different ROMs.
I am running the latest android version for my note that have been officially released to me (Sweden)
Android 4,0,4
I am looking for a "how to" guide to do what i want.
Gain root access
Install ROM´s
I am a "Noob" at this, have never tried it before and is unfamiliar to many terms etc.
Any answer would be appreciated.

Thanks allot, after a quick glance it looks like something i can follow and understand.
Tho i have a few questions.
What method is best or most useful for me to use.
What i understand there is a few to chose from.
0.Root with apk
1.Rooting with stock recovery
1B.If you want just Root but not kernel, follow this
2. Short, easy - requires to reset counter
So with "0" ill get root access, right?
And with "1" i can do what? Phone will do a stock recovery and get me root access?
"1B" what is that and what does it mean?
What does "2" mean, what is a counter? What am i resting if i where to use that?
Thanks
using apk to root? do u read 1of the sentence written This method won't replace kernel, so if you root with this method,I recommend to flash safe kernel)
i suggest u just need a 1time root wif PhilZ-cwm6*
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
flash it wif ur stock recovery is the safe way without increase binary counter.
Go with installing philz kernel. Which is the best, safest and easiest method. Only prerequisite is to have and external sd
and i feel lost...
what is kernal... ?
whats the difference between the things i asked?
i read everything but i dont know what
"This method won't replace kernel, so if you root with this method,I recommend to flash safe kernel"
means, thats why im asking.
why do i want to replace kernal?
so i should follow this thread instead
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
and ignore the first link i got
ok
Stock ics kernels are dangerous. Could brick your phone. That's why when on ics its recommend to install a safe kernel.
I think you really need to read a lot before rooting your phone. Most of them are sticky threads which have all the information. It's better to read and go about it as latter damage could be irreversible

Are you on custom kernel?... this is a known issue with some custom kernels... try changing Kernel.

Install arter97.com kernel. No issues whatsoever.

+1. This is a well-known issue on some kernels. Flash either Arter97's kernel or SkyHigh.
I recommend Arter's. I'm on v11 and have no issues at all.

Thank you guys for your responses. I really appreciate them.
I used Odin to install the "Noble Kernel_auto-root" and I guess is the one is giving me problems.
Lake I said before, I am new in Android and probably you find my questions dumb but just to be sure I'm doing the right procedure. Do I have to download the arter97 for galaxy note 5 and can I use again Odin to overwrite the previous kernel Nobel I had installed? or do I have to follow a different procedure?
Thank you Manishvy, Akw6190 & Brava27 again for your help!

You can try Dr. Ketan's rom..it has option available for different kernels (including stock modified). If you want to flash kernel alone..i think odin is the only way (until flashable zip available- for that you need custom recovery).

Incorrect. If @alfboy001 has a custom recovery installed, he can flash the kernel that way. Most kernels I've seen are .zip format so custom recovery would be the only way to flash them. ODIN is for .tar or .tar.md5 files only.
