Just got XT1095 with 4.4.4 stock... what next? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got a new XT1095 Pure with 4.4.4 pre-loaded. I've already gone through the 'unlocking bootloader' routine from the Moto website. What's next? Should I be taking OTA to 5.1 first or rooting first? Thanks for any help!

OTA first, you can't upgrade if you are rooted.

The 4.4 bootloader is fine with every rom out there. I wouldn't take the OTA since you are unlocked bootloader just flash the stock roms via twrp on the android develop section there is one for 4.4, 5.0, and 5.1. its the best way to not risk hard bricks. I have switched back and forth several times going this route. AGISCI posted them.

I also just got an xt1095, is this the latest ROM http://www.filefactory.com/file/5d66szhobgmx/VICTARA_TMO_XT1095_5.1_LPE23.32-21.6_cid9_CFC.xml.zip ?
Also, I have unlocked my bootloader but didn't root yet (this is with 4.4.4 installed). If i simply DL this image and flash it using TWRP (which i have installed) will it overwrite TWRP or break it in any way? Can I then simply root via TWRP ( assuming it is ok) and boom have a fully rooted Lollipop phone ?

You can't flash firmware files with TWRP, it won't work.
You have to flash it with RSDLite or fastboot.
As far as if it overwrites TWRP. If you use RSDLite, yes it will erase TWRP and replace it with the stock recovery. If you use fastboot to flash just skip the recovery image when you are flashing.

Why? Is this limitation only for stock images or ANY custom ROM too?

Because the firmware files are just standard images which get flashed and overwrite the partitions. The zips you run in TWRP are instructions on what to do and install. They are completely different things/formats.

Sprint OTA and root

I currently am not on the ota for the sprint moto x, my boot loader is unlocked, and I'm rooted. I'm not familiar with ota updating since I've always used Roms. Can I simply rsd back to stock with stock recovery, then accept the ota, flash twrp recovery and reroot?

That should work. You might be able to just fastboot recovery then take the update. It may cause a bootloop and make you rsd back to stock and take the update again. It may be worth it just to see if you can keep your data. In ether case you would want to back up your sdcard.

Best way to root latest 5.1 pure edition OTA?

What are people doing to root the newest official 5.1 pure OTA? I saw a couple of threads about root floating around, but cf autoroot seems to have failed for a few people. What are you guys using to root?

Completing this question by adding one more bit that is there any root method which supports easy unrooting like Kitkat days where we don't have to go through hassles and risks of flashing whole stock ROM again?
I rooted 5.1 by booting twrp and flashing latest supersu. I haven't tried yet to full unroot but it should work.

Via fastboot. I just unrooted my device, although bootloader says "Software status : Modified" so i don't think it's safe to OTA update.
Be careful with this method though. Cause as of now there is no full image of 5.1. Therefore no stock recovery if you want to flash everything back like stock , unless you go back to 5.0 and then flash ota, hence the potential risk.

Yep. Kinda stuck as I didn't backup before rooting
Doesn't the factory reset convert the phone back into the stock? Like what used to happen in previous Android versions?

No, that's never been a thing. It only wipes /data and doesn't touch /system at all.
For that to work, they'd have to take up valuable phone space with system images.
As for root, getting it is virtually unchanged since 4.4.4. Use Cf-Auto-Root or let twrp do it.
Anybody tried re locking the boot loader.???
I tried every method but failed....

It's pointless to do. There is no valid reason to relock it.

the topic gone wrong, what is the best way to root latest ota? does cf-auto-root work?
since there is full image of latest 5.1 ota for pure edition, there are low risks of rooting.
any suggestion?

Just flash TWRP and root that way... If you don't want to overwrite the default recovery, boot TWRP. No real risks, it hasn't changed from 5.0.

5.1 Version 23.16.3.en.US

Hi. I just got an OTA notification for software update 5.1 Version 23.16.3.en.US for my rooted TWRP recovery XT1095. The phone currently has 5.1 version23.11.14.victara_tmo.tmo.en.US.
What is the best way for me to take the update? I tried to revert to stock recovery with multitool, but nothing happened when I pressed 3. Should I find another way to flash back to stock recovery and take the OTA update?
Thanks.

Xt1095 stock 5.1 update Rom?

Just wondering if anybody that has experience and the expertise could create a stock rom from the official 5.1 update for the xt1095? Using leonardoafa's stock rom which I love!!! Would be awesome to get the official update for the phone I have lol, installed the first soak test, and didn't realize it ruined any chance of updates in the future, so I unlocked BL and rooted! Now just wondering if the official 5.1 update could be put in rom form, to install via twrp! Thanks a bunch for any input, appreciated
Just get the official 5.1 zip from Motorola and fastboot the boot and system from that zip. You can safely fastboot most of the bin files on there just so not use the gpt or bootloader.

I'm a little nervous about fastboot to be honest lol. I downloaded the first soak test moto put out for the xt1095! Users have bricked there phone after installing that soak test. I know due to the fact of not being able to upgrade, so they attempted to downgrade to be able to receive the official 5.1. Just nervous about doing anything fastboot, and .img due to the soak test. So figured I would see if a rom could be built, able to flash via recovery. I love recovery, short straight and to the point lol

XT1095 Not getting past "Warning, Bootloader unlocked" screen

I was currently running 6.0 update when I flashed twrp 2.8.7.1. This was successful and was able to boot into recovery but when I was rebooting through twrp it asked me to install superuser since I was not rooted so I said yes. After the phone rebooted I was stuck at "warning bootloader unlocked". In an attempt to fix this I tried going back to stock so I flashed stock recovery and image from 5.1 with the same results. So not sure if I put myself in a worse spot or not by trying to flash back to 5.1 or not. I can still get into fastboot but not sure what else to try at this point. Any help would be great at this point.
You need specific kernel to flash superSU.
Suggestion : flash stock 5.1

No, it's a modified kernel, not official. You will find them in the development forum here.

Alright think I gotcha. Still new to some of this but I see your post regarding stock roms 5.1 link listed below. I should be able to flash through TWRP and be go to go?
