Who's working on root these days? - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

What devs out there are still working on root for the turbo?
Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

I've found that kingroot works much more consistently if you clear cache before using it. It least we now have a temproot for sunshine if jcase ever supports the turbo.

Didn't get a chance to post in either shiffty thread before they were closed. Did anyone notice those screen shots shiffty put up there were 5.1 but I though "his exploit" was being worked on 4.4.4.
Maybe I missed something, but I did find that thread entertaining.

My poolman is. But not sure how successful he'll be since he's still using an LG flip phone.

There's something in the firmware making it hard to keep root
Sent from my XT1254

That would be WP dude. WP is why we can perm-root our phones thru the OS and is why it disappears after a reboot (Though you can just re-root using the same KingRoot app as before.) I'm sure you know WP means we can write/install the necessary SU binaries to the system. WP is part of the "firmware" you mentioned.

Just to put it out there - you can use a root app (after rooting your phone ofc) to set SELinux to Permissive so it doesn't keep forcing your phone to reboot. I'm testing it on my phone now. Again it will still disappear after reboot but still a temp work-around.

There's no question he wasn't anywhere near perm root like he initially stated (or unintentionally led people to believe-to me it doesn't matter at this point), but at least he is looking around. A lot of the devs on year old devices like ours and the note 4 have given up. I really hope he discovers something. Dmverity (which I think is still the culprit) is a tough nut to crack.
@jcase will eventually look at the issue, but apparently bootloader unlock is the most likely way around wp. To me that says that wp too hardened at this point and the bl is the better angle of attack. That is both good and very scary. My comments are based upon what jcase has stated recently.

So let me ask this, if I temp root, install an adblock, and reboot, what happens? Clearly ill lose root but will the hosts file get overwritten?

To me temp-root is useless. I mean seriously, who wants to keep re-rooting and re-installing root apps after every reboot? I don't, that's for sure. Without write protection disabled you are going to be very limited in what you can do with any root method you use.
Oh, and I use AdGuard for blocking ads on my Droid Turbo. You don't need root for it to work and it works very well.

Except I didn't have a double negative. What he posted makes no sense, and I posted exactly what I meant to say.
Simple: dotson assumed there was a comma where there wasn't.
Original: "No current root methods work on the Droid 3."
What dotson (mis-)read: "No, current root methods work on the Droid 3."
Thus he assumed he meant to say "No, current root methods don't work on the Droid 3."

From y limited understanding Gingerbreak works with 2.3.3, however the D3 comes stock with 2.3.4, which has all known exploits closed. So we just have to wait until more are found, with code as complex as an OS there's always some to be had.

Let's hope.
It should be even easier once the first OTA comes out, seeing how the moto devs access the OS is very likely to reveal an exploit, or at least point us in the right direction.

Hey @qbking77, Could you put in your OP which method you used please? Moto or CF's Autoroot?
Thanks!
:edit: I need to add why I'm asking - We have had a report of Motochopper not letting an app that needs root function properly where CF's Autoroot does. Being that it's early in the game, people may want to know this. I understand that CF has a disclaimer using the autoroot method but it's still a viable solution with the numbers coming in on successful. I do not believe we have had a failed attempt on Sprint devices. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

Thanks for the video. I did get it to work though I ran into an error. It said that more than 1 deviced or emulator detected. I exited Bluestacks, pdanet and the Galaxy streaming server. After closing those programs, I ran the batch file and it was successful. I'm sure that bluestacks caused the issue. Just a warning for those using this program.

Disable OTA update check? Keeping Root.

I have a Sprint Moto X that was rooted with PwnMyMoto.

So Should I Get the Moto X?

I'm contemplating getting a Moto X on Verizon. I want root. Don't care about ROMs or anything just want to be able to do a couple things mainly. I've read some threads and what not and am a little confused about how easy it is to root the thing with the latest update. Is it possible or did they patch it up? I'd be getting the phone from Verizon so I'm guessing it'd be up to date. Thanks in advance.

Even without root this phone is amazing! This is coming from someone who used to flash a new rom daily. Now like you, I still prefer root for certain apps but this phone is so good it would be just as enjoyable without root. You might get lucky and get one that's been in the cabinet for a couple of weeks then you could root it. If not I'd still get it. I would bet we will have a way to root the newer software before long anyway.

There is an alternative root method, it is not going to get released before 4.4 though... If it get released now, then the exploit will undoubtedly get patch with 4.4... So the creator is waiting for the big update to release, then release his root method.

A while back he said he had another way to root but would hold it back until 4.3+ update. That's cool he's pushing it out sooner... Hopefully the exploit doesn't get patched in the next update though, I understand the reason for waiting on these things, it's like playing chess.

I would be very careful of the Dev edition. With carriers you get good support and exchanges. With Moto, the support is horrible and no chance for an exchange.

there is an exploit for the comera ota update now. It is not that complicated if you toy with your phone and know how to use adb and run some simple commands. There is a video for it and another thread that gives you instructions for windows for those that really don't know how to run things in cmd prompt.

Yes, that would work but without a backup or a custom recovery you are really playing with fire. Huge Risk

thanks to @graffixnyc you guys have a backup already located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/img-kxe21-187-42-pure-edition-rooted-t2892882
it's also super easy to use root explorer and create a copy of your build.prop.
and you guys have a test recovery for at least flashing zips. that's all you need right now honestly. take some risks. that's how you learn.

So in theory one must change model number to supported device and hide root?
Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone had success?
