Does Straight Talk use an LTE SIM card for its Verizon use?

I am also interested in getting more details about this. I'm currently using an old sprint note 2 on straight talk (verizon) and would love to get the N6.
I'll add my experience with Straight Talk. I took my Verizon phone (Droid DNA) to Straight Talk and although it did work, it was not LTE and service (voice and data) was horrible. YMMV.
You would have to activate it as a GSM device. It would use ATT for service. Straight talk can not activate LTE on Verizon. If you get it to work on CDMA you will only get 3G. If you tell them it is LTE capable they will not activate it.

Verizon recently announced MVNOs will have access to LTE. It looks like it is already in effect. Here is a ST Verizon network LTE phone: http://www.walmart.com/msharbor/ip/Straight-Talk-ZTE-932C-Prepaid-Smartphone/39322439 There is also a LTE hotspot on the Verizon network. Now the question is will we be able to buy a Verizon based straight talk sim or can we pull one out of this ZTE phone and make it work in the Nexus 6? :fingers-crossed:

That's great if they're moving to LTE, but the coverage in my experience was definitely not the same as Verizon's. I would have areas where I'd completely lose signal and not be able to so much as send a text or make a phone call. And this was in a highly populated area. It was a night & day difference in coverage. Again YMMV.
I figured instead of making a new thread I would ask here. I have a Nexus 6 that was on US Cellular. I purc. a straight talk byop program and put sim for att in it. It worked fine last night. I woke up this morning and have no signal bars at all. will not make or rec. calls. Anyone have an idea what i need to do? APNs are all correct.
I just wanted to bump this old thread and mention in case anyone was searching for- that Walmart now sells the straight talk Verizon LTE sim cards. Just waiting on a speedtest review now.
Good News - Nexus 6 Confirmed Working with VZW LTE Sim
Hi All,
I finally was able to buy a Nexus 6 from Motorola. I have just finished setting it up with a Straight Talk Verizon LTE sim. AND IT WORKS! I purchased the verizon sim package from Walmart. The biggest challenge was getting the sim activated. I really wanted it to just work, but as some may have expected the IMEIs of Nexus 6 devices do not check out as valid when trying to do the CDMA registration step of the sim activation. This is likely due to the fact that there are no Nexus 6 IMEIs in the verizon network database... yet. This may be a pointless when Verizon announces they are finally carrying the Nexus 6, but you never know.
So... the How to:
Basically you just need to do the well documented Verizon display model IMEI trick.
Here is a detailed description of the sim activation technique: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/12/11/how-to-activate-a-nexus-7-on-verizon-wireless/
In short:
Walk into a verizon store and take a picture of the IMEI from an LTE phone, the one I used was from a HTC One M8, but the Moto Turbo would work too. (I grabbed a couple different IMEIs just in case one didn't work. The first one I tried worked no problem)
After that just follow the instructions on the SIM activation package, but use the Verizon store IMEIs instead of the Nexus 6.
When it comes time to stick it in your phone for activation, put it in the Nexus 6 and your golden.
I can confirm 3G works, LTE works
I have received texts to my Straight Talk number and to Google voice.
I have received and sent MMS messages.
This technique DOES NOT change your IMEI in the Nexus, it simply allows you to activate the sim card. It DOES NOT associate the verizon store IMEI with your account in any way.
On your account page you will see the sim card associated with your phone number not with IMEI of any phone NEXUS 6, store phone or otherwise. See attached picture of how it will appear in your account

Is there anyway you can run a speedtest for me on the Verizon network? I would like to see the speeds before I load my service card on the SIM card.

Huge thumbs up! :good: did something similar to get my nexus 6 activated on straight talk
1. Turned off my existing verizon note 3 and wrote down IMEI number
2. Activated BYOP activation kit sim from Straight Talk with my note 3 IMEI
3. After activation, put Straight Talk sim into Nexus 6
4. Enjoy Verizon LTE Speeds!
I'm out in the mountains and am pulling down ~5mbps with the Nexus 6, this is the same LTE speeds i get on my verizon iPhone 6plus and what I got on my Note 3. My other verizon phones pull down 20-30mbps in the city, so I expect the Nexus 6 to do the same.

I did the same thing, but for some reason i need to go to the apn and edit it for ST on verizon and its wierd because verizon your not supposed to edit that. and i still cant send mms
I can confirm that a Straight Talk LTE SIM card that uses Verizon towers will work in an unlocked Nexus 6, even though Best Buy, Amazon, etc say it will only work with GSM carriers. Voice, sms, mms and data are all functioning properly.
The SIM card I am using was activated with a Moto X Developer Edition about a month ago, but that phone started acting up so I figured I'd buy the Nexus since it was on sale.
Speeds in southern-central Maine are 5.2 down/2.4 up. Not blazing by any stretch but Verizon's coverage in Maine is better than anyone else.

Can anyone tell me if VoLTE works, meaning you can make a call and use Data at the same time? There are reports that this feature must be switched on internally by Verizon. As a straighttalk user, we don't have access to Verizon Customer service.
I'm also in Maine too, stefymarty and I'm thinking about switching my Straighttalk ATT lte sim for Verizon.
Thanks for responding.

Pretty sure Verizon limits MVNO's to 5 down so you're basically getting as fast as you can.

Just tried it and it appears that you cannot use data while on a phone call. Not a deal breaker for me - it's a feature I've never used.
On a side note - if you decide to root and flash a custom ROM, you may lose your mobile data. After 3 weeks of perfect performance, I got the flashing fever and unlocked, rooted, and installed the latest cm12 nightly. After doing so, I ended up with an exclamation point in my signal bars, able to call and text, but no data. When I checked the apn settings, it said "Access point names are not available for this user", instead of showing the usual dozen or so Verizon Internet APNs. I tried everything to get it to work, including the usuals - reinsert the sim, airplane mode toggle and reboot, dial *#*#4636#*#* and change the network type, toggle the radio, etc. Nothing worked. I decided to flash back to a stock ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/rom-stock-rooted-5-0-1-lrx22-stock-root-t2980206 and suddenly all the vzw APNs were showing up again, but I still couldn't connect to mobile data. As a last resort, I did the unthinkable and called Straight Talk customer service, told them I just updated my phone and lost data connectivity. The kind lady had me turn off the phone, called me back on another line, and turn my phone back on...instantly saw the sweet sweet LTE in the signal bars. Literally the shortest and most rewarding experience I've ever had with ST customer service lol. I'm tempted to reflash the cm12 ROM, but the fact that the APNs go missing kind of scares me. If anyone else is reading this and knows how to fix this problem, please respond. Anyway, just thought I'd give you a heads up. Enjoy the beautiful weekend we have on tap bub!

I just received my 32 GB Nexus 6 that I purchased on the Motorola store and I have not been able to successful activate it on Sprint. When they activate the phone both LTE and 3g work perfectly, but I am unable to make or receive calls and SMS . When talking to sprint they show that the device is activated correctly and can not find a reason why it would not work. Currently i am waiting on sprint to work a ticket for this issue, but I was wondering if any one else has run into this and if so were and how were you able to get it resolved.

possibly due to wifi calling enabled on your line?
after activating mine over the phone and watching my phone "update device config" by itself.. When I finally decided to make a phone call 30 mins later and noticed it not working.. I had to go under carrier settings and "update device config" a few times before my calling finally started working.. since then everything had worked fine..

I have been through that so many times and no luck. The only thing I can think of is the IMEI whit listing issues I have been reading about with the CDMA carriers.
Just in case any one else is having this issue or considering buying a Nexus 6 from Motorola to use with Sprint I wanted to follow up with how this ended.
After a week of going back and forth with Sprint, talking to them at least once a day and having multiple tickets opened and closed they were not able to provide a solution. The final answer they gave me was that the IMEI was not compatible with Sprint, even though the phone should be. They then continued to say that unless the phone is purchased from them they can not guarantee it will work and suggested I return the Motorola purchased phone. In the end the phone was more important to me than being a Sprint customer, and luckily I was in a position to leave Sprint after being a customer for 12 years. After porting my number over to AT&T my Nexus 6 is now working perfectly.
I can't say this will be an issue for all users purchasing a Nexus 6 from a seller other that Sprint but it is something to consider before doing so.

That sucks man, well I ported my # over to Sprint from Verizon and mine activated just fine - then again I didn't order mine from Motorola. I don't know your situation is a bit ridiculous though maybe your nano sim needed to be replaced..

That is one of the first things we tried. I honestly thing it has something to do with the IMEI white listing but that is just my conclusion from reading other articles regarding similar issues.

So last week I bought a Moto xt1060W on ebay for Verizon. When I got it on Friday I popped in the sim and set up the phone. Not really paying attention I rushed out the door as it was downloading updates on my way to Comicon. When I got there I noticed I had no 4G service or data so I could only send and receive phone calls. I didn't get home til late so I decided to try and resolve it in the morning.
The next day while investigating the cause of no data I discovered that it was indeed NOT a Moto X xt1060 VZW device. It was a Moto X xt1050W made for regional carriers in the Illinois areas (probably thumb). The device has no VZW or other carrier software or branding. It does use same bands as VZW. I contacted the seller who swore up and down he had the device on Verizon for several months with no issues, but had bought the device from a local phone store. I contacted the VZW support and they basically told me that since it wasn't a Verizon phone there was nothing I could do.
.
I was pretty bummed and had started the return procedures through ebay but decided to hold off and look into it for one more day.
After some investigating with the seller we determined the only thing of difference was that the device I bought had different APN settings. So I found some VZW APN settings online and configured the phone. Now it works on VZW with no issues. I looked online and I have found no other case of a non VZW device being allowed to function on their network.
Did I miss something in my searching? If so is it not true that other unlocked phones from the same carriers would work with an APN tweak?
Is it possible that whatever regional carrier the phone was made for was part of the Verizon network? For example, I used to use Qwest wireless a long time ago with our family plan. It operated on the Sprint network, but was branded as Qwest. Eventually they stopped using the Qwest name and just offered bundled service with Verizon branded phones and service (we had to buy all new phones to get on the Verizon network).
So if the phone was part of a carrier that piggybacked on VZW, the necessary info (IMEI?) would be in their databases to allow it, so long as your settings are configured correctly, as you described.
I know there was a lot of confusion about this with the Nexus 6 coming out where previously carriers like Sprint and VZW would not allow a device that wasn't purchased through them to be on the network. VZW people seemed to get in without issue, but Sprint users had a ton of issues for devices bought from Moto or Google Play vs. direct from Sprint. It was cleared up eventually, but it was a nightmare.
I believe that is the case. Now I want to try and replicate this with a virgin mobile device. I find in my area a lot of these smaller carriers phones get resold dirt cheap so I can pick up something nice phones of I can replicate this.
I've got a grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon (which they can pry from my cold dead hands!) but I also have a T-Mobile SIM I use for my overseas trips (love the free, but slow, 2G roaming!). My Project Fi invite should be arriving in 1-2 weeks, and my plan was to cancel my T-Mobile account and use the Fi SIM for overseas roaming. My question is, if I upgrade the phone to the Project Fi-only LVY48C build, will I be able to switch between my Fi and Verizon SIMs at will, without any loss of functionality? Has anyone on Verizon tried this yet?
Thanks for any help y'all can provide!
What are the benefits of the Project Fi build over the regular build?
I should be getting my Project Fi sim the next week or so also. I also plan on doing the same (US usage with VZ UDP, Int'l usage with Fi instead of T-Mo). I can attempt the LVY48C on my N6 as soon as VZ resolves some network issues associated with my line. I don't wont to complicate things right now...
Subscribed to this thread in case anyone can give a definitive answer in the mean-while.
@black7, what ROM did you settle on? Also, out of curiosity, do you have the Google Wi-Fi Assistant available to you? Check in "Google Settings" app-->Network-->"Use open Wi-Fi automatically".
I'm trying to figure out if this feature is triggered by the presence of a Fi SIM or specific Google accounts or the Fi ROM.

OK, that's helpful. I think this is a really cool feature, that I'd love to find a way to enable for everyone, but right now there's so many places this access bit could be stored (server-side vs. client-side; triggered by a handset having ever seen a Fi SIM vs. Google account with an active Fi subscription vs. phone with a Fi SIM currently inserted) that anything would help narrow down at this point. At the very least, you've helped me rule out the ROM as a factor!
I got my invite yesterday, so after I ordered my SIM I chatted with Fi support and asked about switching between my Fi and Verizon SIMs once my phone is on the Fi-specific build. She told me that I would have issues trying to use a non-Fi SIM and that I should only use the Fi build for Fi. I'm still going to try both once my SIM arrives, but that was not promising news. Guess I'll have to get a Moto X Style Pure Edition to use with Verizon....or a new Nexus in a few months.

I've switched back and forth a bunch of times, even while hot (while powered on) and it works most of the time. Takes about a minute for the radio to do its thing and get synced up.
One time I lost the ability to dial out with my Verizon sim (lost all APNs), but reflashing the radio got it working again.
Definitely worth trying.
I probably won't keep FI. The reality is Verizon works great for me and the new pricing structure brings it a little closer to that of FI.
You certainly don't want to use the "Fi specific" build on Verizon. But you also don't need the "Fi specific" build to join Fi. Any current build will work. By design, says Google.
If your Nexus 6 is already on Verizon, update your it to the current stock build, which I believe is would be LMY48I. Then join Fi and follow the instructions for BYOD devices here.
If you have any problems swapping SIMs between Fi and Verizon, it likely will be from Verizon's business rules that have nothing to do with device or build compatibility. Reportedly they often don't play nice with using the same IMEI that has been used on other carriers. (I have no experience with this. Verizon has never had its hooks into me.) And it is not clear to me if you also would be porting your phone number back and forth.
Interesting info, thanks! I will not be swapping numbers - I'm keeping my Verizon number, and using my existing Google Voice number for Fi. I'll keep the latest Verizon build, download the Fi app, and see what happens.

Be aware that there are issues porting your Google Voice number to Fi. As I understand it, you basically are abandoning it for Google Voice forever. See this Google Fi Help page.
All I want to keep doing with my existing Google Voice number is use it for my Verizon number's voicemail, and that will apparently still work. I don't use any of the Google Voice features that will be removed once I switch to Fi.

When I wasn't able to get the reception I needed I was able to port my GV number back to GV when I cancelled Fi.

Which Radio did you use? I never flashed mine, bought it unlocked from Google a little more than a year ago, but now, after using Fi for a couple of weeks, it looks like it might have updated the radio itself. Not sure how to force it back to the Verizon Radio...

The solution is to go into the calls section of the dialer and disable the call assistant settings.

Curious if anyone is using the unlocked Pixel 5 with T-Mobile? I bought the unlocked Pixel 5 from Best Buy today and went to activate it with T-Mobile and they are telling me it doesn't support VoLTE or LTE Extended Range so they can't activate the device?? This is the model I bought: GA01316-US
I have T-Mobile and dropped my sim card from my og Pixel XL into my new phone (same model # as you provided). Works well, no issues at all.
I'm waiting on the arrival of my phone, but there was a message from TMobile a while back about needing a new sim card to use the 5G SA Network. Does anyone know if this applies to Pixel 5?

I'm no expert on 5g, but the sim card I dropped in my new phone has been around since at least 2014, and I'm getting 5g in Phx.

I also picked up my pixel 5 at a Best Buy in the Chicago area. Getting 5G on T-mobile just fine with a 5 year old sim.
From what I'm reading, Stand Alone is supposed to be better. You need a new Sim card for that. I have 5G everywhere with my old Sim. Probably going to get a new Sim soon
I should mention I'm a Sprint customer but I'm using a T-Mobile SIM in my current iPhone 11. I don't think that should matter though?
I'm curious if you all put your IMEI in T-Mobiles IMEI checker what does it say? When I put mine in for model: GD1YQ it tells me that it's not supported on T-Mobile. I did the same IMEI check for Verizon and AT&T and it checked out fine. This is so weird...

I am.
It's a long story, I won't bore everyone with it. I have replaced (tried to) my Pixel 4 XL on Thursday the 29th, which was running on an eSIM.
I called T-Mobile after work to get a new eSIM downloaded. I wasted six hours of my life with getting an eSIM with absolutely clueless technicians. I was really pissed off, T-Mobile has always been number one in customer service from my experience. They gave up and told me to visit a store to get a physical SIM. Bull****. After I told them no way I was visiting a store they wanted $25.00 US to mail me a SIM. As far as I know, it's still coming, but Customer Service in the US has removed the charges from my upcoming bill, especially after I told them I'm talking to them on a SIM-less device. If do receive the SIM, I will be depositing it in a strong metal container. My trash can.
I called back the next day during normal business hours and the eSIM deal took exactly five minutes to get done, as was my experience with my Pixel 4 XL.
Lesson learned? Hang up and call back during normal business hours to find someone with a clue. Everything you are stating that T-Mobile told you is incorrect.
After speaking with the network engineer, I learned that currently T-Mobile is both 5G SA and NSA, that's how he was seeing my connection and provisioning profile for my account, but should change soon. in some areas and they are migrating to complete SA, I am good to go with my account on with both versions of 5G. Right now NSA isn't quite as fast as SA, in theory, but not reality at this time. If I understood him correctly I was on NSA, which could simply be due to my physical location. Pulling 100Mb/s but the potential is there for 300Mb/s or better.
You can find the distinctions on:

Your mileage will vary depending on your area I live and tower proximity, I live in a major city in the US, and I understand they are working with the city's downtown area as priority. He was unfamiliar with which bands the Pixel covers, but it does have the antennae to handle the higher frequencies AT&T and Sprint uses, T-Mobile is using the 600Ghz for the majority of its customers:

I put my ~4 year old T-Mobile SIM card in my Pixel 5 and it's working just fine on 5G. The sim was previously in my Pixel 4, Pixel 3 before that, and Pixel 2XL, prior to that.
I didn't know you could buy an unlocked Pixel 5 from BestBuy that wasn't meant to work with Verizon or Sprint. I'm wondering if your "unlocked" phone is really meant for one of those two carriers.

So maybe try with an esim? If you put your IMEI in T-Mobile IMEI checker does it say it's compatible? This is just so mind boggling to me. I can activate it with Sprint but not with T-Mobile. It's so weird.

Try getting an eSIM. Eventually, SIM cards will go away as bothersome. Do yourself a favor though, I don't know what your location is, but call T-Mobile during their normal 9-5 business hours. If your call is routed overseas, hang up and call again, or ask to speak to a US based engineer. Please don't take that the wrong way, I found that the outsourced call centers are poorly trained, and cannot perform the simplest of technical tasks. I actually had an argument with an "engineer" when he told me to scan the QR code without activating the EID in their system. Moron. He refused to listen to someone who has some understanding of cellular operations. Then he accused me of not knowing what a QR code is. This is not magic, you cannot just scan the QR code on their website and expect registration without prior entry into the system by EID.
Don't expect the reps at the stores to understand how to set up an eSIM either.
IMEI doesn't matter to T-Mobile at all. When it comes to an eSIM, they do ask you for an EID. The IMEI is either whitelisted after activation or rejected because it's on a "questionable or stolen list" The fact, as far as I understand it, report you phone stolen and the IMEI will become blacklisted. They have the IMEI and the phone is dead to the world. If someone is asking for an IMEI for an eSIM, hang up. Rest assured your IMEI will show up on their systems and your account once your phone is up and running on their network AFTER successful EID based registration.
This is why I find it incredible that people steal phones, when in reality they are stealing a paperweight.
As far as companies like AT&T, they refuse to activate phones if not on their supported list EMEI list, I told them where they can stick their IMEI and walked across the street to T-Mobile after being with AT&T forever. The last straw was refusing to let me use HD voice because didn't purchase the phone from them (IMEI related). Petty, idiotic, they lost a customer. I don't know why I didn't leave AT&T earlier, they refused to activate Nexus and Play Edition phones without a lot of drama.
Here it is, T-Mobile is bring your own device friendly, always has been, that's why IMEI is not relevant to them. AT&T can burn in hell.
Their polices may have changed since then, I wouldn't know, and I don't plan on ever finding out.

I think they have Verizon, ATT, Sprint/TM, Unlocked.
On their web site, Best Buy shows two options. Verizon and Unlocked.

Actually, the unlocked one from Best Buy works with all carriers. It's no different than the unlocked version you can buy from Google.

That's what's so weird. I don't understand why when I put in the IMEI on T-Mobiles website it says it's not supported. It's just so strange to me. Even when I call T-Mobile and try and activate they tell me it won't work. I think I'm going to go and return and try another one. Maybe I got a dud or something... I don't know how but you never know.

Works just fine. Those guys don't know what their talking about.
My carrier, Spectrum, sells the P5 but won't activate an unlocked P5. At least not now they won't, they said in future they would, no time line.
Multiple ppl I talked all bought it unlocked and just used their old SIM and it works fine, even gets 5G in the areas where its available.
My P5 comes tomorrow and I'm just gonna pop my old SIM in and call it a day.

I could not get the IMEI to check with Spectrum. I called them and they are sending me a new SIM. I was told I need a new one for 5G. I will verify I can activate it when I get it. I was able to verify the IMEI with the Verizon check site.
