Update MRA58K to MRA58R - Nexus 6 rooted - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am currently android 6 MRA58K. I received a notification for a OTA update. (update MRA58R or MRA58N ?).
My 6 nexus is rooted. How to update ? (fastboot ?)
I don't want to lose root and TWRP recovery.
Thanks !
Besta1204

You can always just flash the system.img from the Factory Image of MRA58R
(https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#shamu)
You 'll need also to flash superSU again (version >= 2.52)

first rtell if your device is stock or rooted and on a custom recovery?
if rooted , then download 6.0.1 stock rom, if not rooted, then just wait for ota update..

Error 7 is usually cause of modified system files. Did you removed some system apps or installed xposed framework? If yes, the easiest way to install the ota is flash the full rom. The universal ota is already available which can be flashed in any Android one (Sprout 4) phone.
You can download the files from here:

Faced the same problem.
I was on stock rom with twrp. Flashed thunderzap 3.5 kernal and then Super Su. No other modifications was done on my side(no system app remove and no xposed). Tried flashing 6.0.1 ota. Failed. So I think that's the kernal problem. I'm not sure though. Do we require original kernal for flashing ota in mm...
Edit update. I was wrong. Tried flashing 6.0.1 ota with official kernal too. Failed again with twrp. Then flashed with cwm, again failed error code 7 again. Let me try it with official recovery. Wait for results...

Found the problem. It is related to the user release keys and build props. Our phone should have 6.0/MRA58N or M. But it has 4.4.4/KPW53 user release keys. See the attachment. So I searched Google. See this forum

It is for one plus one. But they faced the same issue. Any solution found please report.
Found the solution.

Ota doesn't install because the recovery have wrong fingerprint of build no. The solution is very simple. Reflash 6.0 ota and do clean install. Don't flash recoevery or kernal. Now your default recovery os changed to stock again. Now download next mra58n ota. Don't download universal ota's as they might fail via stock recovery. Download device specific ota's.
And now if your build no. is mra58n then you can flash 6.0.1 ota file (75.6mb). Screenshots of successful install attached after facing same problem. Now on stock with jan patch installed too..

Custom recovery for EMUI 3.1 (Lollipop 5.1.1)

I'm currently on stock recovery but I used to have TWRP before Lollipop. Not sure if it works for 5.1.1.
Can someone confirm which version TWRP/any custom recovery I should get?
EDIT: sorry for potentially wasting your time, I just installed 2.8.7.0 TWRP and it seems to work fine.

I would recommend using 3.0.0-0 version, because it has some bug fixes and an integrated emui updater so you won't have to flash the stock boot image again if you just want to update or downgrade.

Nexus 6 + SuperSU + ElementalX = no (full) root?

Root checker and AdAway are telling me that I don’t have root. I’ve rooted my phone using super su and other root apps are working ( FireFlash and Clocksync for example). But AdAway and BusyBox are not.
Flash stock system.img (june security update)
Flash stock boot.img (june security update)
Flash supersu
Flash elementalX
No profit ☹
I’m using:
twrp-2.8.6.0-shamu
ElementalX-N6-3.16
Systemless supersu 2.74 ( on I have 2.65 same issue)
Everything was working for me since last year after update to june security update I can't root fully my phone . Any ideas? Please help.
You didn't give much information about the state or history of your device before hand. Stock/Custom ROM? Wiped? Factory reset from stock recovery? For starters, you're using a way outdated version of TWRP. Should be 3.0.2-0. Install the latest recovery and try flashing SU again from recovery. Any errors? Record them. If that doesn't work, flash the stock recovery and do a hard factory reset and try again using fastboot (not FF).

flash your kernel first. EDIT: first meaning before supersu. And also try updating to TWRP 3.0 always want to stay up to date on recovery releases.
I have the same set up with root...

I have the exact same issue. The issue is we can't seem to remount the system partition as read/write anymore.
The problem is that for the life of me I can't get it to remount using any method. Someone else has the same issue also https://www.reddit.com/r/nexus6/comments/4nvgfv/can_no_longer_modify_system_after_june_ota_even/
Any help would be appreciated.

Question about new Oos 4.0 flashing

I saw that the 4.0 version of Oxygen OS was available with a full version to flash. I have finally recieved my OP3T today, got TWRP installed with supersu root as well. Will I ruin anything if I flash the new 4.0 nougat version? I haven't gotten xposed installed yet (wanted to check out DPI scaling on nougat first), will that be possible after flashing 4.0 as well?
thanks in advance, so excited about this phone!
Hi
You can flash the zip using TWRP. Just flash SuperSU afterwards. Xposed won't work.
I've done that now, got nougat working fine, with twrp and SuperSU but I can't get the dm-verity warning to go away. I've tried flashing the stock recovery and then reflashing twrp and superSU, but no luck so far

How to update to Oreo from Magisk rooted stock rom OOS 4.5.1?

Can anyone help me with the steps to update to Android Oreo (OOS 5) from OOS 4.5.1 retaining root?
Below are the current setup of my phone
Rooted - Yes (Magisk version 14.0)
Recovery - TWRP version 3.1.1-2
Current Rom - Stock OOS 4.5.1
I haven't had any problems in updating earlier but now when I try to flash the full oreo rom from TWRP, I am getting error 7.
Below are the steps I followed.
Downloaded the full OTA zip.
Rebooted to recovery.
Unistalled Magisk.
Tried to flash the Oreo OTA zip. At this point TWRP showed error 7.
Reinstalled Magisk and rebooted to system.
Phone is working fine.
you need to use latest twrp for oreo, for example blue spark version, search for it on xda...
Follow this guide here:
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/how-to-install-oos-5-0-over-rooted-4-5-1.684519/#post-17134194
It's exactly what you need.
All Oreo ROM threads clearly state under the "Instructions" heading, that you need either AkhilNarangs Modified TWRP or Blu_Sparks TWRP V50. Using stock TWRP would result in an error.
If the error may still persist, try flashing a different firmware.
Just to get some more clarity.
I have the original OTA full zip. Should I download the zip file from your thread?
Can I install the custom version of TWRP using the official TWRP app? I am bit confused on how to install it.
Is it important that I should use Magisk 14.3 or will v 14 have the same effect?
Hey there,
I can tell you how I have done it yesterday (successfully).
1. Update TWRP - I prefer blu sparks version 8.52 (Link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=27225); you can do it by using your installed TWRP Version (Install .img)
2. Dirty flash OOS 4.5.1 again (to remove root / magisk) - once finished DO NOT reboot into system, reboot into Recovery/TWRP to verify the new version and afterwards to system
3. flash OOS 5.0 (Oreo) - dirty flash is okay
4. flash magisk Version 14.3
These are the steps I have followed yesterday and all is running perfect and without any problems.
BR
Which recovery is mentioned in this linked discussion resp. in the linked download? Is it blu_spark TWRP?
Regards
Clark
This worked perfectly for me.
Glad to hear that everything is good ?
I did the same and I was suddenly encrypted and no chance to get my data back. Still forcing clean my phone because I cannot format the device. I get always an error message in TWRP like: unable to format to remove encryption
I go crazy...
Enter recovery and wipe data and then cache.
Then reflash the rom and probably you will be good to go.
