Hi, I'm having some issues with my dad's Fire tablet: the pictures he saves into his tablet vanish for no reason.
He sent himself a bunch of pictures as attachments, and saved them properly. Within an hour he found out the pictures had disappeared and thought that is was due to the fact that he deleted the emails (as if what he saved were references, not masters). He did it all over again and kept the emails this time but the result was the same. Sometimes all the pictures disappear, some other times just some of them.
I've had Android 1.6, 2.2.3, 4.0.3, 4.4, 5.1.1 and 6.0 and I never faced this problem, so I don't know whether it's Android's issue or Amazon's fault. Or my dad's.
He uses Piktures as the picture browser and has installed ES Explorer. 50€ Amazon Fire 7" tablet, running 5.0.1, no root but Google Now launcher and most of Amazon's services hidden.
Thank you
The new es file explorer has a "clean" feature on he homepage... maybe your dad clicks on that?

I am the one who uses ES Explorer as my dad doesn't know how to use anything really, and none of us clicked on that.
I'll try to investigate further although it's not easy as it's not my tablet.
I hope Cyanogen fixes this issue.

Pictures remaining after charge: 9
So it's obvious that something happens while the tablet is plugged in.
Found this thread [can't post links] and it seems it could be fixed by deregistering the tablet so that's what I'm going to try next.

You don't have to post links, just the thread title should be enough for search.
I haven't seen any issue with pictures disappearing, but haven't done much with picture on this tablet.
how are these being downloaded?
you said email, but which email app?
Where are these pictures being saved? not external sd card if it's not rooted.

Amazon.com: Customer Discussions: Photos disappeared from Kindle Fire
The thread is from Feb 2013 and I only look for sites updated within the last year by default so that's why I didn't see it at first.
It seems Amazon uploads the content of the Fire to its cloud when you register your device? And then removes it from your Fire? I don't remember being asked whether I wanted this to happen.
I can't understand how it happens tho if your tablet is off (that's what last comment says).
Dad's tablet is not registered anymore so we'll see what happens next time he charges the battery.

Ok, this may have been answered before, but when I searched I found no concrete answers. Please forgive the noobness. I just got the NC on Saturday, tried it out as an e-reader, hated it compared to my Kindle and promptly rooted the dang thing. Now I have a really, really awesome tablet.
Anyway, I'm having an issue with the Kindle app that's bugging me. When I go into my archive and download books, I get an error that the book is corrupted and I need to remove it and try again. I do this and get the same error. It doesn't happen with every single book though so I started experimenting with some free books. With both of these books, I went to the Amazon web site from my computer and "purchased" them. Then I synced my Kindle app on the Nook and downloaded them.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes loads for me with no problems and works.
Tale of Two Cities does not work. It will download, but when I load it I get the the error message. I'd post the links to the books, but I can't since I'm a newbie user. Both are the free versions of said books.
The same thing happens with several other books I've got. Some will load and some will not, but I'm not sure why or what the commonality is between them. Has anyone else had these same issues and found a solution? Any help is appreciated in advance.
Read/write errors? Are these books saving to uSD? Are you using a class 6 uSD card or at least a Sandisk class 4?
Nevermind. I was able to fix it. I had to uninstall and re-install the app, but that fixed the problem. Now if I can only get my VLC streaming straightend out, I'll be in good shape. Appreciate the help though.
Great thread title. Got me to look at it.

Glad that worked....I'm unable to download a certain book that I bought. All it says after a minute or two of "downloading" it says it is unable to download book. Opened a case with amazon, but they haven't figured anything out yet. This also happens on two of my windows pc's, so this isn't isolated to just android.
When the HD comes out, could somebody rip the Amazon Instant Video app apk and post it on xda?
The reason: Old app only works on Gingerbread. The new one should work on ICS and JB because the new Kindle Fire's OS is based on ICS.
Was just about to post a thread over here, we has one going on the old KF forums. ES File Explorer is on the Amazon market and should be able to read the /system/app directory without root. Really hoping this apk works on other ICS/JB devices.
An update bin file was posted and I grabbed the apk file from that. So far no luck, it FCs on my Touchpad with CM9. I tried installing as a regular app making sure Voodoo had me unrooted. I also tried as a system apk and rebooted, still FCs. It refuses to install on GB so I imagine its using API Level 15.
Hopefully it just needs another apk installed, Ill play around with it and see if I can get it working.
EDIT: I installed aLogcat to see if I could narrow down what is causing the FC. Its looking for the class "amazon.unifiedsettings.UnifiedSettingsHelper" which doesn't exist. Later in the log the FC is caused by a fatal exception with the class "amazon/unifiedsettings/UnidifedSettingsHelper" not being found. Is this a lib file or a system apk it wants?
EDIT2: I gave up on it for now. I tried some lib files, tried installing as many apks as I could (didn't try replacing system apks). It still FCs with the same error log and I can't find any files that reference unified settings. I also downloaded the Kindle Fire 2 update file (the updated original fire) and its using the same APK. LCD Density for the HD is 240 and 160 for the regular Fire 2. I use 160 on my Touchpad so that shouldn't be the issue.
How does one get apks out of Amazon's .bins?
com.amazon.dcp.apk
MyAccount-unsigned.apk
AccountAndSyncSettings.apk
These are the three extra apks (in addition to video apk itself) I needed to get it running on my Nook Tablet back in the day. I noticed back then that it seemed to work a little different for everyone. Some folks didn't need any of those while others of us experienced all manner of crashing without some of them. Sadly, one also forced my NT to appear as a KF in the Amazon app store, which made some of my purchased apps incompatible. Caveat emptor.
Would love to see those posted though if someone gets around to it. Would also love to see Amazon get their rear in gear and release a prime streaming app for android that didn't require all the fuss.
The bin files open for me in WinRAR, I think they are just zip files. AccountAndSyncSettings.apk is gone from the new Kindle Fires, the other two files are still there. I remember using those 3 files before allowed you to add an Amazon account and then open the app and you would already be logged in. With the new 2 files, it FCs in settings when I try to add an Amazon account. I didn't try using the old GB apks, it may be worth a try as they allowed an Amazon account to be added even on ICS.
I'll upload them, there is only 2 now, because you may have a different outcome than me on a different device.
No luck on a simple side load to an Acer A700 or an Acer A100 both stock and unrooted running ICS. I am reluctant to try the other apk's because I also had my a100 appear as a kindle fire and had to restore it to get use of my apps that were not kindle compatible.
I was messing around on my Touchpad with CWM so I always have the option to restore a nandroid if I were to screw something up. But I played around with it a lot this morning and didn't do any damage, everything was FCing.
No luck on Nexus 7. Tried after installing all three apk.

I will work through a flash capable browser with a desktop user agent in Android as well, but its not optimized very well for mobile devices. The app is much nicer when it works. At this point we may be better off trying to get the GB version working in ICS since it will at least open and let you browse.
In addition to a better UI in the app, I've also experienced intermittent, albeit minor, audio sync issues with mobile flash that I never had in the app. I hate that.
can someone with a kindle fire hd open up the app and then post the log? Wouldn't we be able to see where the unifiedsettingshelper file was with the log of it opening successfully?
Any update on this?

We need a Fire HD user or somebody with more knowledge of how things work to figure out where we can get "amazon.unifiedsettings.UnifiedSettingsHelper" from. This is the missing service it crashes on. I can't find any lib files or apks from the ROM that fix this issue. Also even if we get past this crash error another one may appear. At this point I'm thinking we may be better off trying to get the old GB app working since it seems to have fewer issues. It allows you to open and browse to videos on ICS, also allows you to add your Amazon account to the device, but crashes when you go to play a video. Its having a database issue according to the crash log posted over in the GB thread:

could amazon.unifiedsettings.UnifiedSettingsHelper be part of one of the odex files in system/app ?
It will be fantastic once this can be resolved. I hate that they are allowing this on iOS but not on other android devices.
Yes, it is absurd that iPad has access and general android devices are SOL. We purchased our content...and can't watch it reliably (app access). I would encourage everyone to let amazon know this is unacceptable - and I'm hopeful the good people here find a fix for us in the mean time.

I tried giving Amazon some feedback on supporting other Android devices - they didn't seem to care much. I guess they want to sell more Fires, but if they're selling them at a loss wouldn't they make more profit by supporting their app on other devices?
Our how about, I purchased my kindle to read, purchased a tablet before the fire was a gleam in their eye.
I purchase video content and have limited access to it, so i won't purchase future content with amazon as a result.
No I won't buy a fire and I am encouraged to buy my future content through Google play on top of that!
Loss, loss, and more loss for Amazon. Doesn't make sense.
Sorry for side tracking the thread, I will end the QQ

Yup. Of course they aren't going to listen to any one complaint, but Amazon is a pretty responsive company on the whole. Squeak enough and they'll grease the wheels. There's no indication they want to make this fire-only, given how many other devices its on, it's just a question of priority. You can bet the apple people whined more than the android people, so if you want them to get it in gear get on their contact page and make the request. I've done it repeatedly, but we need more people to get noticed.
** UPDATE **
To be more specific, I'm not having issue with Android Device Manager, I'm having issue with the message "You don't have any devices" in Google Play Store.
I've looked it up in lots of places but seems like no one has a concrete answer.
Any further direction would be appreciated!

Hello,
I've installed all of the required apps to run Google Play store and have installed apps without issue. I'm having a couple of issues:
1) When I tap on Google Account Settings, it doesn't load anything, just closes the app
2) When I log in to Google Play on my browser, it says that I have no devices connected to the account, even thought I'm downloading apps just fine with that very same account in Google Play app. I'd like to remotely add and delete apps from my tablets as they are for the kids and I don't always have the tablets by my side to install / delete things.
Please help, thanks!

Another poster (perhaps a few) described a similar situation along with the steps taken to remediate. If I stumble across that I will repost here. As I recall it involved deleting and readding Google account(s) on the device side (reboot between) plus a tweak or two from the web version of Android Device Manager.

While there are quite a few you might want to start with AirDroid. Generally well regarded albeit sometimes a bit schizophrenic. You should be able to accomplish basic app/device management with the free version. Can also look at some of the more focused tools once you decide which features are most important.

Yes - did you look at AirDroid? Claims to have that capability. Also note there are various workarounds (eg: create a second account) for the original issue you reported. None work 100% which is why I didn't elaborate. You are going to have to do a little research to get what you want.

Answered the last question in a previous post (below). As for remote install a tool like AirDroid can get the job done but you will need to get creative with the approach. In the end it may not be worth the effort, especially if the target devices are physically accessible albeit with a little inconvenience wrestling it away from the kid.

I have a brand new kindle fire 7, just did the steps for installing Google play store, installed a few apps but the gmail app won't stay open and work.... What do I do now?
Same with me. I would love to find the answer to this. Thanks.
I'm having the same problem... Have tried most of the standard attempts to fix it. It did refresh the messages initially, but it still opens, then immediately closes. (Still shows it's running and have cleared that, rebooted, etc). Very frustrating! (Sorry.... probably the wrong thread, but's happening on my new Fire 8HD 2017 too)
Getting the same error here, so I did a logcat on it:

Nope - characteristic if the underlying components that Gmail relies on. Can't downgrade those; will either fail or immediately self-updating to latest version. Look to another mail client (many fine options in Play Store) or use web interface.

Unlikely either party will pursue a 'fix' as Amazon and Google don't pursue mutual business objectives or cross validate apps. Especially hacks. Best option IMO is to consider a different mail app (there are many fine alternatives in the Play Store) or use the Gmail web interface (spartan but serviceable).
thanks
that makes perfect sense. i do use an email app but prefer gmail direct.
i will hold out hope. Had the same problem with Amazon's washington post - it finally fixed itself! found i could sometimes get it to work by just shutting it off normally.

I suspect (but have no direct evidence to support) a new dependency on a core Google component not included with the basic Play Store install for this device (FireOS v5 in general). Haven't peeled back the onion to identify root cause as I do not run FireOS on any of my devices. Do have temporary access to a 'stock' HD 8. Will take a look if time permits.
Could simply be a version mismatch on Android code shared between FireOS and Google components. That would be a tougher fix on unrooted devices.

I am a little surprised too. You can download it from the Play Store from the tablet so it's not to do with compatibility I don't think. I had the same problem earlier with Weather Underground and I downgraded a few versions and it worked. Could be an update Amazon snuck by us too. The tablet kicks you out right after you setup Gmail. It's like you can do everything else except read your Email. It even still sends you notifications. I thought it was working after my reset an hour ago because of the notifications. I tapped the icon, it went to setup and when it got to the inbox, it kicks me out. I'll reinstall it later using an older version and see if it works. I don't worry about auto update as I don't let my play store apps auto update.
EDIT: I recall when I had my Fire 7 working, you could go back a few versions of an app and update it from the play store to most recent and that fixed the issue. Perhaps try that?
Old version - good thinking
Didn't realize I could do that. I grew up coding assembly language on an IBM 50 - left when Smalltalk and C++ were all the rage.
I will stop auto updates and see about getting an older version.
I am kind of amazed that Amazon allows this "side loading" - it isn't really a root - just a sidestep.
Glad it works. The Fire 8 is a marvelous little gadget for the price. It will change EVERYTHING - like FIRE..
And it makes Jeff just a bit richer - like he needs it.
Many thanks.
cannot regress in Fire

OK, after a bit of a search, I found a repository of older versions.
Is this reliable? https://gmail.en.uptodown.com/android/old
I am on 7.7.2 - I see there is even a newer one.
OK, 7.5.21 lasts a little longer - not much.
7.5.7 nope. 7.4.23 , 6.11.27, nope.
I am going to stop for now. I did find that it seems useful to delete the storage BEFORE uninstalling. It's like the next install picks up on the existing memory and just uses it. If you delete that, it starts fresh. Not that it is getting me anywhere. Thanks. Later.

Older versions are also available on APKMirror. Not that it matters as it would seem an underlying dependency is missing. Becomes a cat-and-mouse game. Consider using a different mail app or the Gmail web interface.

Damn shame no one these days has built in POP options anymore. I'd take a totally manual interface over an app any day.

Google is good about putting updates across all versions. If that is the case with Gmail, no older ones will work.
Gmail used to work. I did have it on the tablet a while back. Though I never reinstalled it after I did my first reset.

Look to another mail client (many fine options in Play Store) or use web interface.

You were right, there are other email apps that are fine... Thanks.
Would having root allow one to give the gmail app the proper permissions?
I have the Amazon version of the G7 Plus. On my home network, I am running Pi-Hole as a DNS server. When reviewing the logs on Pi-Hole, the most active device on the network is my phone. Among the requests it send out, it is trying to send requests to 'web.facebook.com', 'graph.facebook.com' and connect.facebook.net'
I have never had Facebook installed on this phone. I don't use a web browser to access it either. I have closed all my apps and disable background data on all installed apps. It is still trying to talk to Facebook.
Is there a way I can identify what app is making these requests? In a 24-hour period, it has made nearly 500 requests. That boil down to a request every 3 min 30 seconds. If I can identify the app, I can decide if it's worth keeping.

So...I followed the instructions for adb. Since this was an unlocked phone that I bought from Amazon and since I am using a prepaid MVNO, I wasn't sure what to put in the 'OEM' or 'Carrier' variables. I downloaded and installed the App Inspector app. I scrolled through every entry on the list and could not find any that had anything resembling Facebook in it.
Anything else I can try? Thanks for all your help.
