Looking to Root - running marshmellow stock - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just had a problem after using root toolkit to attempt root on nexus 6 with marshmellow. (6.0 ), build MRA58R. After this attempt, got the message that" device is corrupted" and would not boot into system. Luckily bootloader was still unlocked and was able to flash stock image. Phone boots fine now with Boatloader unlcocked, and TWRP is gone, with no root. How do I root from here and install TWRP again without going through what happened before.
In the beginners guide to root, Chanifire's link hasn't been working and I want to be sure I do this right to avoid what happened with the toolkit. Also, my phone is setup with apps and data, and I dont't want to loose my setup.
Thanks for your help.

rooting marshmallow..
1. unlock the bootloader(yours is there already)
2. fastboot flash twrp recovery.
3. flash the latest supersu in twrp recovery
4. flash a custom marshmallow kernel, any. this ones new for marshmallow, and is needed.
5. boot up.

how did you manage to flash stock again after corrupt. mine wont recognize adb while corrupt. please give step by step
nvm. i got it finally

You don't flash with adb, but with fastboot.
The steps are:
1. Turn on phone with pressing vol down and power.

Thankyou very much danger-rat really appriciate your help but today was a bit lucky day for me
I tried to flash a recovery image through ADB and then it went well and then flashed the su.zip from sdcard that gave me superuser permission again thanks again for your help
@0mpranav
No need to flash the system partition, no need to use ADB, just flash Superboot:
Code:
https://bexton.net/2011/09/24/root-access-for-nexus-one-on-android-2-3-6-grk39f-superboot/
If your bootloader is unlocked all you have to do is reboot into fastboot mode. Flash a custom recovery such as RA or CWM, reboot directly into revovery and flash su.zip or whatever flash zip you used to root your device before. Reboot and you are rooted once again.
The following thread has a step by step how to do it. It's fast and easy.

Yup. This is the way every one should be doing it. It's sort of the whole point of the Nexus One. It has an unlockable bootloader.

I have purchased two second hand Nexus Ones. The first thing I did after receiving them and charging the battery was to reboot into fastboot mode and issue "fastboot oem unlock" command. Since they were purchased second hadn I didn't thing I had a warranty anyway so unlocking the bootloader seemed to be a non brainer.

Will any version of su.zip, and fastbook.zip work? What about recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img? or should we be using a different version?
If we should be using different versions of those, could you link to where we could get them?
I've had my Nexus one half-rooted since 2.3 came out, and I haven't been able to root it back.

I'm sorry I have no idea what that is. I don't even know if its helpful at all. Again, I don't even have root, or a custom recovery. Presently, I have an unlocked bootloader, ADB on my PC, and a half-rooted nexus one from before 2.3.
I have absolutely no idea how to do anything presently, and when someone tells me that trying to root on 2.3.6 is futile and to just use a custom update, it doesn't make any more sense to me.
Care to elaborate past one line that doesn't help at all? Hell when using shell commands through adb, it keeps on saying "permission denied" any time I type in su.

Thanks Danger-rat. Although I know you said nothing different that what was already said in this thread, I figured that since you didn't give me specific info about whether or not there were multiple versions of su.zip or fastboot.zip, I figured I should take that as a "No.", so I went for it. All re-rooted now.
I appreciate the help.
EDIT: So if you are as new to this stuff as I am, anyone else who's reading-
You can DL su.zip from http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...ZxOuf9Kw_URvtvh9Q&sig2=Hj72LDNoiBq2Zoa4QquZWQ
and fastboot.zip from http://www.mediafire.com/?ttdkgamud3j
and amon Ra 2.2.1 from http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img
then follow the directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019759
** Note: again, these are for people who have unlocked bootloaders. For that info, you'll have to go elsewhere, but it should be readily available, such as this stuff is. I'm just linking it again because I know how frustrating it can be for people like me who aren't too well versed in rooting/unlocking yet.
Downgrade 2.3.6 to 2.2.2 - Nexus One
Problem:
I would like to downgrade my Nexus One to 2.2.2, because I've had non-stop problems with Gingerbread.
So I've gone through the Bootloader -> Recovery -> apply sdcard:update.zip steps, and it fails. This begs the question, how do I go from 2.3.6 to 2.2.2?
Fix:
Generally, phone manufacturers will not allow you to downgrade for various reasons. The stock recovery does indeed validate the update image, so that it's of a greater (or same) version than the installed system. With the Nexus One being a developer phone, you can unlock the bootloader and replace the recovery image with the one that doesn't perform this check, and will allow installation of any image. The caveat is that unlocking the bootloader voids your warranty with the carrier (and sometimes the manufacturer too,) and wipes all user data off the device.
Unlocking the N1 is dead easy. Just install Android SDK and the USB drivers (located in "google-usb_driver" directory.) Then restart the phone in bootloader mode by shutting it off and powering on while holding down the trackball, hook it up to the computer via USB, and in command prompt issue the following command: C:\<path to Android SDK>\tools\fastboot oem unlock. You will be presented with a confirmation screen with further instructions. Upon successful unlock, you can flash a custom recovery that will allow you to install any custom ROM, including downgrade to 2.2.x stock version of Android OS.
To flash ClockworkMod recovery, download the latest version for Nexus One from here, reboot into bootloader mode (power on while holding the trackball down,) and in command prompt issue command C:\<path to ANdroid SDK>\tools\fastboot flash recovery C:\<path to downloaded img>\recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-passion.img
Reboot to bootloader mode again, and then use the Volume keys to highlight the "Recovery" option and press Power button. You are now in ClockworkMod recovery, and can flash any custom ROMs via the "Install zip from sdcard" option.
Here is a "stock" 2.2.2 ROM (with root) off XDA-developers forum.

Issue rooting with unified rooting tool

Having an issue with the unified rooting tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/orig-development/toolkit-skipsoft-unified-android-t2967053). Paid for the pro version because i enjoy supporting quality work.
Went to do the all-in-one unlock/recovery/root, however it's not rooting for me. The final step of rooting gets stuck in TWRP and nothing happens. The program says 'Recovery mode not detected' and just hangs asking me to try again, ask for help, or abort.
I have ADB and everything on and working as unified can connect to my phone, just can't get root going.
The phone is now unlocked with TWRP, but I can't achieve root. I flashed 5.0.1 via the app. Anyone have any clues?
edit: did it manually (before reading simms22's post). was hoping for lazy-automated as i paid money for the app and all.
If you have twrp installed just flash SuperSU. The newest version of SuperSU (2.37 or something I think) can be flashed like old days.
lol, learn to root a nexus the right way. its easier than using a toolkit..
1. fastboot oem unlock
2. fastboot flash yourself a recovery
3. flash the latest supersu with that new recovery
4. reboot and profit
root

recovery will not stick on 6.0.1

I was having issues and wanted to switch to the systemless SU so I decided to start over fresh. used toolkit to restore stock image and unrooted. tried to install newest twrp using toolkit but it kept coming up with bugdroid with red triangle and exclamation mark. Did some research and few places said you have to go back to lp. so I downloaded factory image and went back to lp unrooted and locked bootloader. unlocked, rooted and installed twrp everything was good. I extracted the newest 6.0.1 factory image and installed each component separately except for the recovery. now I am on 6.0.1 and try to go to recovery and bugdroid with red triangle and using toolkit I cannot get the newest twrp to stick. my sdk is updated.
any ideas on what to do?
thanks

Never trust a recovery installed by a tool kit. Grab the recovery img from the site and flash it manually.
all i have now is stock recovery. whats the best way to manually install twrp
go into fastboot and flash it. you have to be in your bootloader to flash via fastboot. you put the file in the same window as your fastboot program, then type.. fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img, and that will flash twrp. if you type fastboot boot recovery recoveryname.img then itll only boot into recovery one time, thats what your toolkit did.
Wugfresh Toolkit works great for me and I used it for 6.0.1
Make sure you flash permrecovery file provided by the toolkit, it prompts this during the steps.
If the copies of factory img or recovery provided by the toolkit are not working one easy way is download your own, the toolkit allows you to use your own files and not the one it obtains.

when you have root, you can always use an app, like flashify, to flash twrp recovery. but you need to have root first.

I have tried with and without perm recovery checked, I had the newest twrp img file so I choose other and selected it, I even used the option for one time recovery boot with twrp and then flashed twrp within it like I was updating twrp and still nothing. I am going to try fast boot itself without the tool kit.
Is there any other part of the stock factory image that would update the recovery? I didn't install it coming from lp but it still went back to stock instead of staying on twrp

no. but when you flash the full factory image, stock recovery will replace twrp. if you just want to update, flashing the system.umg and boot.img will work, and youll keep twrp.
This is why we don't use toolkits.
Boot to bootloader mode
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <recovery filename>
Where <recovery filename> is the path and filename of the twrp image you downloaded
After flashing use the arrow keys to boot into your newly installed recovery
Take a backup of your phone
Use recovery to boot android
Reboot to recovery with custom power menu options, or by opening a console on your phone and typing in reboot recovery
Post here to tell me that I am right, and thank me.
If you don't reboot to recovery from the bootloader, it will likely be restored back to the OEM recovery.

well, thats how you should flash recovery. but its not the reason that we dont use toolkits. we dont use toolkits for several reasons.. 1. they mess up 2. doing it properly is just as fast if not faster 3. newbs think that toolkits are made for them to use. well, they are wrong. toolkits teach you absolutely nothing, which is the worst for beginners.

if you skipped the recovery.img, your recovery should have stayed.. oh, never mind, i just remembered a file that you need to remove after the first boot, or itll install the stock recovery after the first reboot. its called recovery-from-boot.bak. if you remove that on first boot, youll be fine

Can't root LG-H811 20p because supersu soft bricks phone

So I connected my LG-H811 running stock ROM 20p to my PC successfully and ran adb and fastboot to transfer twrp and supersu over to the phone internal drive. So far so good. I couldn't get twrp to flash properly, so I simply did a temporary boot and got twrp to run without flashing it as a recovery. Then I used twrp to flash supersu (SuperSU-v1.94.zip). The problem is that when I try to reboot, it says the superSU binary is not installed. So I tried newer versions of supersu (SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip and SuperSU-v2.48.zip). Each time with these newer versions it soft bricked the phone again and required a full stock ROM restore. Specifically, it hangs either on the black LG screen or the white T-mobile screen, while the blue LED flashes on and off every few seconds. To unbrick it each time, I did a restore with stock ROM H811V20p_00_0913.kdz with LGUP. That got it working again with stock ROM, but no root. There must be a way to get superSU to install on 20p (and even get the twrp recovery to flash). I unlocked the bootloader, and it seems to load, so apparently that's not the issue. Thanks.

Thanks raptorddd, but that's exactly the problem. I did flash superSU using twrp, and it seemed to install fine. I expected that I would simply get root as you say, but that's not what happened. The first time with SuperSU v1.94 newly installed, the phone rebooted normally, and the superSU app showed up, but it didn't work because it said there was no binary installed. The newer versions of superSU simply soft-bricked the phone. So I need a way to get superSU to work and not soft-brick the phone. Is there a preferred version of superSU for LG-H811 ROM 20p, or some obscure setting that makes it work?

Thanks -- that's the the exact same version of superSU I used earlier (I even ran a diff, and the files are identical). After I flashed this version of superSU on the p20 stock ROM with twrp, it soft-bricked my phone. By that I mean it got to the boot page, and the blue LED pulsed on and off every few seconds, and it never got beyond that. When I flashed superSU v1.94, at least it booted afterward, but when I opened the superSU app, it didn't even give me the option to update binaries -- it just said the binary isn't installed, and so superSU can't run, it exited.
Maybe I'll try flashing an earlier stock ROM and see if that allows superSU to flash and run properly -- not sure which ones are compatible given the anti-rollback versioning.

OK so I finally got root. The key was to copy over this file to the phone's internal memory:
Imperium_Kernel_G4_H811_v4.8a.zip
Then:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img
Then in TWRP, flash the imperium kernel. After that everything worked with root, though I still can’t get the twrp recovery to flash properly. Having root is good enough for now though.
EDIT: just now got TWRP to flash using flashify, so everything works. On to unlocking...

May I ask where you downloaded the Imperium_Kernel_G4_H811_v4.8a.zip
Did "fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img" work?
What version of SuperSu did you install? I am planning on using "SR1-SuperSU-v2.78-SR1-20160915123031.zip"

Yes, fastboot boot from the twrp image was kind of a hack, but it worked. As for SuperSU, I tried v1.94 and SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip. Both soft-bricked the phone. Maybe the newest SuperSU will work, but I wouldn't count on it given that several previous versions didn't.

I need to flash twrp and root from 20p also. One question to clarify exactly what you did,
Did you originally try flashing TWRP from TWRP? You said you flashed root from TWRP but I want to verify if you tried flashing TWRP from TWRP like:
> adb reboot bootloader
> fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img
then in TWRP:
> install click on image tab.. then select twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img recovery and flash it.
> reboot recovery (should reboot to TWRP you just flashed)
Just to be totally clear doing > fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-h811.img leaves your stock recovery intact and just loads TWRP temporarily.
Or did you actually flash TWRP from TWRP and it didn't flash properly?
Thanks!

Yes, just loads TWRP temporarily. Later I installed some apps that flashed the recovery successfully, either rashr or flashify (I don't remember which)
I hope you have all the files and pc is reading your phone in adb.
Keep the downloaded twrp file in your adb folder with dwonloaded name (Ex:1234twrp.img)
Copy the file and keep in phone internal storage with names recovery.img
adb reboot bootloader (wait for phone to boot in bootloader ofcourse)
fastboot boot 1234twrp.img (whatever your twrp img file name would be)
Now you are in twrp recovery page in the phone.
Tap Install > Images (bottom right) > select recovery.img >
Now you are in next screen where options to slect recovery or boot
Tap recovery and swipe you will see [image flash complete]
Now twrp is permeant. You can restart in recovery without PC. (Tested)
I have flashed more than 6 methods to install supersu. Keep trying and reply.

No boot after flashing supersu. Attempting stock rooted.

So I followed a guide off of YouTube on how to root this phone. The steps were simply put use fastboot to enable oem unlocking. Use adb to push twrp. Use twrp to flash supersu walla you have rooted stock rom. I attempted this and got stuck after flashing supersu. The rom would not boot. I let it sit for 15 mins. Held the power button let it try again. Again it didn't boot. So I fiddled with it trying to figure out how to get stock rooted and wasnt able to. I could flash a stock image in twrp and it would boot. But as soon as I flashed supersu it would no longer boot. I read somewhere I needed a different supersu so I tried that one. Just asking simply how can I achieve stocked rooted. I also don't understand the encryption thing this phone has. Apparently you have to delete a partition to get rid of it but at boot it will just encrypt again. Any information on that would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for any spelling or grammar mistakes. Writing this out over my lunch break.

I always use this toolkit: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/development/toolkit-oneplus-3t-toolkit-unlock-t3507729
So far it worked flawlesly and saved me trouble.

What version of supersu you installed, and on what version of system you were ?
I was on the latest official version of both as of yesterday. I will try the toolkit when I get home. With this toolkit are you able to root the new 7.1? I tried that out and liked it when attempting to get back to stock. Ultimately the goal is the newest software one plus has to offer with root, snapchat working, and a custom kernel set for better battery life.
You probably flashed an older version of SuperSU, which will cause endless boot animation. The SuperSU included in the toolkit should be the latest stable version. Alternatively, you could root with Magisk, which I have personally found to be easier to install (not as many branched versions) and use. Magisk is not the same as SuperSU, but they both result in the same outcome - systemless root. It's also easier to hide root from other apps (such as Snapchat) using Magisk through the Magisk Manager app. You can find out more about it here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
Toolkit worked perfectly for me. I flashed the latest beta directly from one plus and installed snapchat and logged in. Used the toolkit to root and install franco kernel. Moderator please close this thread.
Are there any issues using adb backup to babkup all apps and restore after unlocking the bootloader? Or is there any better way to backup apps?
