Android on Microsoft Lumia 640 XL. Is it worth it? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i was just wondering,
1. Is it possible to port Android to a 640 XL? has anybody done so is actually my question.....
2. Do you think it's worth the effort to ATTEMPT to PORT android to the 640 XL?
i personally think it is worth it, and i might give it a shot. It's a beautiful phone, with it's 5.7 inch screen and because it's a lot cheaper than most of the 500 dollar phones.
i'm thinking of going ahead and attempting to port android to NOKIA 640 XL. i guess you could call this a development forum/post, if i have questions for other developers, i would think this is the place to post.
thanks! wish me luck!

why you want ruin excellent phone with android...?
luckily not possible... IF YOU WANT ANDROID BUY ANDROID

I think this is an unsafe solution from Microsoft . Android users also do not want to use like this

Possible but it will ruin the system..
Oh you know, Android.. :/
Though I would love to see Android apps just to fix the app gap

It is really amazing to adapt new things. But it is always a typical task for those who trying to make something smart or creative.

iphone rom

I know people are going to hate, this but just wondering is it possible to make a iPhone Rom
Go buy a f***ing iPhone.
Ouch.
That's an interesting question, though. Mac O.S. is basically its own flavour of Unix. Because of this, it makes sense that Iphone O.S. is some derivative of Unix. Since Android is based on the Linux kernel and uses a sort of Linuxy userspace, it might be possible to reverse engineer Iphone O.S., or somehow get the source code (good luck doing this!), patch it and compile it for an A.R.M. prcessor and make a Nexus One boot into it.
I doubt that anyone will really bother, though; there is so much work involved, and you can already buy a Iphone.
It was a question to know if its capable I had a 3gs but I love me nexus and you don't have to be ****
Thank you keet that does sound like a lot but would be pretty cool

Why would it be cool?
A couple reasons if you could use the iPhone app store that would be cool because let's face it the iPhone games and some apps are better and you can switch between the 2 best systems and I know if you have a Android phone you don't really like the iPhone a jailbroken iPhone is still a good phone but it needs to be jailbroken
*~* P-u-n-c-t-u-a-t-i-o-n *~*
My brain hurts now...
P.S. I very highly doubt you'd have access to the iPhone's app store, just because you've got a ROM. If this were possible, don't you think someone would have found a way to simple bring that over already!?!?
I just wondering if it was possible thats all
Sure, anything is possible. It essentially comes down to getting the OS to work with the hardware.
but would anyone do it? No
How about a windows 3.11 ROM while we're at it?
Really??????
I only want DOS on my phone. Can someone do this please?!!?!!
No way, let me install Win7 on my N1, please. I want to play Crysis on it.

How did you find this place?
c'mon, plenty of people would be interested in trying an iPhone rom if it were available. however the difference in the chipsets means it probably won't be happening. especially now that Apple makes its own chips.

The A4 is a custom implementation of the ARM A9 processor. Guess which other phone this can be found in...give up? This is also found in the nexus one (Snapdragon). The big difference here is the GPU which is mated with the A9 in apple’s design.
Currently, the iPad is the first (and only) product to employ the A4. So for now, porting a rom over wouldn't be limited by the fact it is written against the A4 (A9) but rather they are written against the ARM A8. Not knowing enough about porting I would have to defer to those with larger interest in such a matter but I would think barring any wonky crap apple decided to utilize, a port may not be as impossible as one may think once all of apple's mobile devices are running this new processor.
Having the ability to multi-boot a phone would be insane.
Nexus - custom boot loader (grub) that defaults to the phone's os - android
sd card - debian, winmo7, iphoneOS
Don't like it, don't use it. The ability to do it simply because you can? Sure why not.

HD7 and Android - Use this thread for your questions about and stay On Topic!

Would it be possible to have Android on this phone since its basically the same phone as the hd2
I assume you mean as a duel boot? As i see a lot of people asking to put android on it yet they could just buy the htc desire hd an almost identical phone that is designed to work with android. tbh i would love to see some sort of emulator for a couple of the apps but i am so so glad to be rid of android i loved it but it felt like an early 90's computer all basic with no flair.
I think it would be possible but it will be glitchy and a long time off my advise would be if you want android to buy an android device they have a lot to choose from.

its more advanced then the HD2 and has less touch buttons
however its a bit of a silly question IMHO. If you want android get the Desire HD.
Why put a round peg in a square hole ?
I actually think it's a great question.
Why would people want it? because it gives you CHOICE!
It would be great if you could dual boot with Android and WM7 so you get the best of both worlds: taking advantage of Android whilst also using WM7 while it matures. I'd absolutely love to have a device with android and WM7.
Wish I was a developer, I'd work on that project straight away! I'd pay to have a dual-booting HD7 (or desire HD!) !
Bring it on dudes!
Wow please close this thread since there are so many options available for android these days and if anyone needs a android phone they should buy an android phone
I'm not sure I agree with the last poster. T-mobile has no android alternative to the HD7 that I am aware of.

really? for tmous or t-mobile europe? Cause there is the g2 and mytouch4g that just came out android...
To the OP, considering how the hd2 android is booted from the sd card and technically, there is no sd card on the wp7 (once it's inserted it becomes program memory), I don't think this is happening anytime in the future. Gotta agree, that dual booting for computers can be important to some people, but for phones, I just don't see it happening with the newer os's.
I'm a layman with no technical knowledge, just interested, so my comment was more on a visceral level than technical. To clarify, what I meant to say was that '...there is no android alternative ...... I am aware of'...' regarding the large screen format of the HD7. I bought a G2 but returned it because it was bulky, and I decided that I did not need the slide out keyboard. I really liked my first foray into the andriod world during my two weeks using the G2, and was hoping that I would be able to use the HD7 with android as well.
PS. I'm in Florida.

I agree. I don't get it. WinPho7 is amazing. If you want andriod, dont get a brand new phone that just came out with a new windows version. Sure andriod has its perks, but so does Windows. I've had Apple, Andriod and Windows, and I just dont get the point of changing something off the bat. Altho He is probably thinking that the HD7 is like the HD2, with WinPho6.5, which I personally did not like. But it did have its perks too, like multitasking. I don't think many realize how long and how much work it took to bring Andriod to the HD2. I'm not a developer myself, but I can only imagine!
hd7
Okay I find out there is a phone out that's come close to the hd7.. its called HTC desire HD.. its looks just like the hd7 but the only thing defferent is the cam. Which is a 8mp instead of 5mp and its a android phone.. its not windows..
Just get a desire HD if you want an android powered 4.3 inch screen

If you want an android phone.. Why are you buying a hd7??
The answer is maybe. If you want Android, get an Android phone. There is a high likelihood that someone will at least attempt to port Android to the HD7. Whether or not it will be anytime soon, if it will be stable/usable, or if it will actually happen at all remains to be seen. My advice is not to buy a phone on the hopes that Android will be ported to it.

WP8 on Android [Everything you could possibly do,even Launchers etc.]

Hey guys, first of all I am hoping that some of you don't get offended or anything, yes i love android and all that but i also love wp8 like a style ( metro ),and yes I tried launchers and all that to customize my phone ( not the real thing of course.Anyway i am starting this thread to see if anyone could make a rom based on wp8.I heard also that the new wp8 phones will have the dual core processor and HD screen so i guess there should be no problen with that to work.Anyway if someone could possibly make this even if its payable i would pay.And please dont tell me:Go get WP8 or something like that...
Thanks

You can't go beyond launchers and roms with skins, forget it.
Either use Android skinned as WP8 (with some work this can resemble the true thing) , or use WP8 itself and stay there for eternity.
WP8 is closed source.
Ok than, fair enough does anyone know any wp8 launcher or skin??

Windows Phone 8 has not even been released yet so never mind a loader (and I dont see that happening). Your asking for a WP8 skin for Android in a Windows Phone area ?
Sorry man, you need to go to the Android area. Not trying to beat up what you already said but, Your asking Android questions in a WP area, wrong place for this question.
Good luck, wait till WP8 comes out and get a WP8 device, then you dont have to deal with a loader that is even if anyone makes one.

If I had to...what should I pick...

Hey all,
Past couple of days been doing some research. Thoroughly confused TBH. Can't decide which is better...
Now, I'm on Android and not dying to get rid of it or something. But just keeping an eye open for better alternatives.
My sole concern is price. I believe WP8 is a fantastic product. But has got a ridiculous price tag. The kind of money MS is asking for is just bizarre. Nonetheless, I currently can't decide what to pick, LUMIA 920 or the HTC 8X.
Also, a question to everyone who has a WP8, are you truly satisfied in your experience with it or do you think Android is a better bet?
Sent from my RaZr on MIUI.
I'm in the same boat really, I have always used Android but starting to get a little bored with it so looking to try something else. iOS is okay but not for me, so am really looking into WP. The app store worries me, although most of what I use there is already an equivalent app, but it's nice to have more choice.
Have been looking at the 8X but the price is a little high, especially compared to the new Nexus 4. I don't know. Not sure if I would get bored with a Windows Phone, maybe a little more digging into it is needed.
If you keep the Nexus 4 out of the picture then the WP8 phones are priced pretty similar to what new Android phones are priced at, so actually I don't see why you think those would be problematic. Given that the Nexus 4 is also priced in that price range if provided by LG instead of Google (which it is in many countries as there is no Google Play Store there).
Aside from that WP8 vs. Android for most people will simply come down to preference. For some it will depend on certain Apps they rely on and have no equivalent. I personally currently have a HTC Titan with WP7.5 and will get my Lumia next week. For work I have an SGS2 (currently running CM9.1) and I actually prefer WP.
In the end I can only encourage you to really dig into the threads people opened on what they miss in WP. Sometimes they get told how it works in WP, sometimes it simply can't be done but it will give you a better picture than asking us WP users what we think because pretty obviously there are only 2 types:
1.) People who tried WP and don't like it (who will do anything to push you away from the OS)
2.) People who tried WP and like it (and will tell you that you won't need anything else)
In the end no two people are really alike in what they need so the only way to go is to really do some research. WP7 has been my daily driver for 2 years now and a lot of the stuff I was actually missing in the beginning is there in WP8 now (last thing I was missing was backgrounding of Skype). But there obviously are still functionalities someone might need that are not (one example is PPTP VPN - I don't need it, most don't need it but if you do it might be a dealbreaker).
As for the decission Lumia 920 vs HTX 8X. For me the great low light performance of the Lumia and the better App support made me go the Nokia-route. Also I simply wanted 32 GB of storage. My biggest problem with the 8X is that I simply detest the look of the colored speaker grill on the front (otherwise the design is really nice). Weight might be another thing that makes you want to go with the 8X.

Ive had Windows Phone for a couple years now. First one was the Trophy. Before that I had an Android Incredible and I now have a Nokia Lumia 920. I just switched from Verizon to ATT, and must admit, primarily so I could have the flagship WP8 phone.
I have to be honest. While I do love the phone (though it really is a bit big. Im selling my Trophy/Incredible and picking them up for the first time in a long time after having the 920 for a few weeks is strange. They seem so small, but in a good way as I can hold them in one hand and easily do tasks on them. But thats another story)
I do like the WP OS. I enjoy the look of it, and have always been partial to Windows/MS stuff. But I have to admit that there are indeed somethings that I really miss from Android. Specifically, I do miss choice. What I mean by that is with things like Email clients, messaging clients, true 3rd party browsers, customization. You will be limited to what MS has as base apps for these things. MS has the OS locked down to prevent Devs from giving us anything different when it comes to these things. Now while I do like how the Email works, and now real complaints about the messaging, itd be nice to have choice.
Here is just a small list of some things that are different that youll have to accept if you come from Android. Its up to you how important these things are, and if you want to make the switch.
1. Live Tiles. I actually love the tiles. Great visual aspect of the OS that sets it apart from others. I do find it annoying that even with WP8, there is a very limited choice of color. They give you a few more than WP7, but rather than let us make any color, we are still limited to a handful of choices. It wouldve been very easy for them to do this, I dont know why they didnt.
2. No real notification center. Most are aware of this by now, but I expect that MS is actually working on a notification center as we speak. So I wouldnt be too concerned with it at the moment, as I believe they will get an update out to give us this feature in the not too distant future.
3. Mail, messaging, browser clients. What you see is what you get. I always hoped theyd loosen up a little on this and let Devs provide different options but I dont think that will ever happen. Mail actually works well but its still limited. For example, you cant specifically download any attachment file to a folder. You can only open a pdf/pic/music file. On Android, I could open and save any file I received to a folder and access it later. Same goes with the browser. You cant save any file. IE is quick, but there is no dedicated back button. Very few options. On Android, Dolphin HD Browser was the best mobile browser ive ever used. You will never see a browser like that on WP's.
No other messaging clients either.
4. Back up of apps/data to SD Card. You dont have that on WP8. They have improved the back up utility, but it is still nothing like Titanium Backup. That app was awesome on Android. You could back up App data as you saw fit to your SD card and it was easy to re-install. Again, you will never see an app like Titanium backup on WP. MS lock downs have prevented that.
5. Tethering. It was rather easy to tether without having to pay some extra fee for it on Android. Not so much with WPs. Not sure if its the same on Android as it use to be, but if you enjoyed free tethering, it probably wont happen with WP.
Im sure there are more, cant think of any at the moment as Im a little tired. Its been a while since I had Android. I do miss it but I remember flashing ROMs alot. I dont remember if I did it more to improve my experience or just for phone. Probably a little of both but it did get old updating a ROM every week or so. But I will say this. There was next to nothing my Android phone couldnt do. That is what I really miss about it. Completely customizable, devs could do next to anything as they werent locked out of certain aspects of the phone.
Sometimes I ask myself why I switched to WP. Im a bit torn as of now and not sure where I am going next. I wish I knew what MS's agenda was for the future. What are they working on to improve upon, and what new features. At this point in time, Im going to give them another year, see what they come up with. But part of me is ready to go back to Android.
Sorry for the long winded post. Honestly, think about what you love most about Android. And no matter how silly, ask of those specific things are possible or featured on WP. Something you take for granted my not be here. So ask. Check out WPCentral too and ask questions there too.

Being a Google pure phone, why dont pixel phones get love anymore?

This post is not demand a build for our phone, this post is not to get anybody upset it is just a question that I've had for many years.
I've owned every single Nexus device up until the Nexus 6P, and have owned every single pixel device... I remember that with each Nexus phone the support scene was so robust that you look forward to a new phone to come out and see development on it...
For some reason pixel phones are one of the only phones that don't get love from any custom ROM development out there.. you see that lineage OS does not support our phone and has not supported our phone since the Pixel 1 officially. Paranoid Android has not supported our phone at all since the Pixel 1 , And the last official update from them was in 2017.. why is it that our phone being one of the latest phones does not get love?
The main thing that I've heard is that our phone is too expensive to build for, but I have seen the OnePlus 7 pro have vast support in the community and it is almost up there as far as pricing goes as the pixel.
I have always been one to contribute to donations or to work that's worth donating to, dirty unicorns has been a great ROM, but if you think about it our selection of ROMs can be counted with one hand .
Make Google phones great again!
I also believe the pixels don't attract the custom rom enthusiasts like us they are made & sold & marketed to people to be a iPhone competitor also I feel a lot of developers are getting older & many devs just support a few phones that's it & there are not as many devs on the scene like there were years ago unfortunately I remember have my OG Droid from Verizon the support was crazy unfortunately I feel we have to look at it this way its a end of a era for google phones sad to say
Those custom roms are made to make our experience feel like Pixel. They take here and there from pixel feature. Since we are using pixel software, so what the point of having the custom rom? Kernel is more important. Thanks god we have artemis and kiri. Soon we will have Proton or maybe Sultan.
Btw we dont have TWRP support while there is for OP7Pro. Install a custom rom or make one is pain in the ass.
Because they consistently don't live up to expectations. Everybody keeps waiting for them to live up to hype and at least attempt to challenge others with hardware or respond to feedback and they continue to ignore that feedback. it's still in all right device, I like it it's overpriced as hell and I'm glad I waited a few months to get it, still tempted by the OnePlus 8 pro after leaving my 7 pro for this.

Better off going back to the 7 pro.It jus got Dual boot twrp. I'm running Oos and lineage as of this writing tomorrow might be different  . I got a 3xl and it lost twrp after Android 9 you can fastboot boot it with half the functions not working the 7t the same way an id imagine 8 pro be the same. Only way to have fun with Magisk on the 3xl Android 10 is to be running a user-debug build. Without the debug build magisk will let you overlay the system an look at your data but that's bout it. The way things look nowadays looking alot more locked down then they used to wait til Android 11 hits even more so is the case. Now Google going to build their own chipset like Samsung with help from Samsung Which will bring us one more step closer to Google Fuschia instead of Android
ROMs in general have gone down hill.
The need for them isn't really there. Early on, Android phones had tons of issues, shortcoming and limitations... ROMs were a way around that, to get the phones to work the way we wanted and the way they should have come out of the box.
Now? Most phones are really good, and there's not much to improve. ROM's don't really have much to offer any more, other than to a shrinking pool of users who want to tweak their phones more than they actually USE their phones...

Realistically, what's the power of android these days? Yes, you can tweak icons and the status bar and stuff, which 99.99% of phone owners don't care about...
The differences between the platforms isn't as great as it once was... I am on an iPhone 11 Pro at the moment and its a great phone... I want to come back to Android at some point but the watch situation on Android is a joke. And for the Pixels... they just never live up to the hype. I love Samsung, but updates still suck. There is OnePlus but some of the features like Wifi calling don't work on ATT half the time...
I prefer Android overall, but if you want the complete package with a good watch, Apple has the better package.
I had high hopes for Essential but we saw where that went...
I wish that Google would put out a pixel without giant bezels, that didn't have a last generation processor, etc... They will put out a phone in November that's using the same specs as phones that came out last month...

It's kinda sad because I remember my Note 4 having a ****load of AOSP ROM options and this phone has 1 that hasn't been updated in months. I would love to root/flash a ROM on my phone but I think the main thing is a lack of developers. Most have probably moved on and don't see a point in developing custom ROMs when most phones nowadays are capable of doing almost anything. The main reason I rooted/flashed ROMs was for the ability to customize my phone to my liking.

IMO Pixels don’t have the fan base of the type of enthusiast that install custom ROMs and such. Higher spec phones like OnePlus and stuff like they are more heavily modded i feel like because those types of people are attracted to the specs. Pixels don’t have specs that are anything to write home about. Where as a OnePlus with 12GB of RAM is pretty impressive.

That's probably it right there. The latest and greatest Pixel, uses specs that are already obsolete... Every year, they bring half year old specs and release their new phones with comparable specs to everyone else's specs that are already on the way out.
My thoughts below are mine, and mine only..
The reason you don't see as many custom roms here on xda imho is because it's no longer a hub that's a viable place for most roms to gain any value. the passion for development hasn't died. There are many great new features, and things users would love. Sure, the pixels are great out of the box, but you can say that for any flagship that has come out recently.
Don't get me wrong, xda is great, I'm just saying you shouldn't think devs and users have lost interest because their content isn't on xda.
I mean you're right,. It's different than the days of installing a ROM on a Droid x or something and actually seeing a notable difference between Moto blur and not. Or my note two with some of the different runs I could get on it. I don't know, I think I would like the freedom to make different apps different notifications so that I could customize notifications by app or by person a little easier for text messages. Little things like that that I feel like I used to get in some of those older arms but maybe not maybe I'm just misremembering or something.

Why not try reading before you post, and make yourself look foolish.
