question: how to update android system on google g1 development phone - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have a google g1 development phone (NOT a T-Mobile google g1 but a phone from prior to that release) and I am not a developer. my phone is progressively losing functionality as i can't load new versions of applications presumably since it is a development phone and licensed applications won't download. i don't need the development capability but would like to restore functionality, like youtube access etc., and also other licensed, purchasable applications.
i am probably in the wrong forum (not being a developer) but it is hard to find anywhere to ask this question and get direction to 'where to go' ... so my apologies, if that is the case.

Nope, this is indeed the proper forum and place to ask
A couple of questions though, is there an android version you want? The newest official update would be 1.6 doughnut but there are custom ROMs that may be better for you and even 2.3 gingerbread runs fairly well on this phone (and has more app choices)
Also to know the best way to change the software we need to know current firmware, can you boot to bootloader and write down all on that screen? (Power on while holding camera button)

response to demkantor
thanks for responding!
if it is possible for me to update the android system, that is great and i don't know too much about the systems to specify my needs in terms of system capabilities. as a user, i am not sophisticated and my main mission was to stop my phone from its progressive decline due to, i think, its inability to update the applications that were initially installed on it [i bought it 'new and in the box', not knowing it was a developer's system].
the parameters that i can access directly from settings ('About Phone') are as follows;
Model number
Android Dev Phone 1
Firmware version
1.1
Baseband version
62.33.20.08H_1.22.12.29
Kernel version 2.6.25-01843-gfea26b0
[email protected] #6
Build number
dream_devphone-userdebug 1.1 UNLOCKED
121975 test-keys
IMEI
351676030141180
IMSI
00

OK, I would suggest a custom ROM which would allow you access to more apps and actually be more stable in many ways then current one
There are multiple methods to do so but in order to allow you to skip a lot of the steps (which I believe you can being a dev phone) I need you to tell me all on the bootloader screen

Looks like tapatalk didn't let me respond.....
So basically you do have options to do oneclick root apps but in order to use the latest-stable custom ROMs you will need to update firmware anyway
So I would suggest going through the same steps as someone without dev phone

See these old threads and we have walked people through this many times, but of course if you need a hand let me know where you get stuck
Best of luck!

many thanks, ... have browsed those threads and see that i need to do some studying to get a view of the structure of these systems and understand the terminology. i guess the CyanogenMod website is the place to do that?
I notice the link that others used to for their pre-education is no longer viable;
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Dream:_Rooting
and there is no HTC Dream listed on the cyanogenmod supported devices.
also, i do not have a dataplan on my service (Rogers), should i be looking for someone to loan me their sim? (i guess i should hold my questions until i have done some homework).
thanks for getting me launched into this!

No problem! It is possible to do things differently than what's laid out in those threads, but I would be most confident using the ol tried and true methods
I've played around with a countless number of these phones for many years and this method always works without hitch so its the way to go IMO
Even if it feels complicated it really isn't much but there can be a learning curve if you are new to this kind of stuff
But to answer your question it is easiest if you can use a sim (this is an unlocked dev phone so any gsm with data plan) but it is not needed as you can bypass the start screen
And I have all files needed on my server as well as other places so if you can't find the right ones let me know and I'll link you
Best of luck!

Newbie- Could use some help

Hey there, I just got my G1 and got it unlocked and semi working on Orange UK. What Id like help with is some of the terms you use on here,
What is "Rooting"?
Where do I get the latest firmware update, as it's unlikely to come over the air to an Orange customer.
With the APNs do I need to set up a different APN for each service? I.E. MMS, WAP, GPRS?
My marketplace is showing only free apps, is there another marketplace where all the paid for apps are stored and if so how do I access it?
I'm sorry for all the questions, it's just i'm a total noob.
Thanks in advance,
Steve GOral
Steve_Goral, I can try to give you some answers... still a bit of a newb too tho
Rooting- basically allows you access to system areas/files of you phone that are protected to keep normal users from breaking the os beyond repair. (someone can probably explain this better?)
You'll have to look around for the latest firmware update for your model of phone, RC=bought from t-mobile(not rooted), JFRC=rooted t-mobile firmware, ADP=phones bought for app development(rooted by default)
I have no idea about the APN stuff, sorry.
Market Place is currently only available to RC(rooted & not), US model phones as far as I know.
Cheers for the help, my phone was bought off ebay in the UK. As far as i know it's a total UK model. How do i check the phone to see what the firmware version is?
from the home screen press -> menu-settings-about phone, your firmware version will be near the bottom, check out the Build Number: .....RC##....
Just done that, I'm such a knob. There's actually a whole thread with a proper idiots guide to rooting the phone. As soon as I get in I'm going to do it - if only for the auto rotate feature and stuff. It seems like such a good phone but there's just a couple of features that let it down. Blue tooth seems pretty poor as standard too. Be good to get access to the whole range of apps to really get this thing ripping away.
ya, I basically just did it to have the to 'kewl' features too(coming from the wing which got old pretty fast). With a little bit of reading I got debian (command line os) on here. I can use the G1 as a virtual 'modem' with speeds around 50-100kb/s. Kill apps that are running in the background at will There's a ton of other 'how tos' as well.

I want to go back....

Unfortunately, I think I'm done with my Cynagogen ROM. Too many little bugs, I don't have enough time and patience to keep updating and hanging out on the forums for solutions to basic functionality of the phone, like BT and the stereo headset, namely. Love the work, the community and everything about the dev world, but I just plain don't have the time to mess around with it.
I'd like to keep my phone rooted so I can continue to tether, but I want to go back to the factory ROM, android cupcake. I know this is sacreligious, but I just want my phone fully functional.
Questions: (1) I never partitioned my SD card and supposedly my version (which I can't even remember now) of Cynagogen has apps2SD built in. Can I keep my apps when I downgrade? I paid for several of them....
(2) How do I even do this?
(3) If I keep my phone rooted, will basic cupcake allow me to tether?
I searched the forum but the Q&A section is MASSIVE, so I apologize if this has been already addressed.
Thanks in advance to whoever helps me out.

To keep root and have the most stock ROM check here

Is the 1-Click Rooting still available for Dream/G1?

i've been all over this site as well as others trying to find a fairly simple way to root my T-Mobile G1, non-dev phone running Cupcake 1.6. It looks like the 1-Click Rooting will work but first, before i do anything, i wanted to see if this procedure was still working.
Is it?
When i d/l Cyanogen's Mod i noticed that it d/l the update-cm-4.2.5-signed.zip version as well as the 4.2.7.1. Which one should i use?
It looks like the Radio is the same, so that would be one less step to perform, correct?
i'm attaching a .txt file which i've made so that things/steps are a little clearer for me to follow.
Any help would be appreciated. Have a great morning!
I am a total newb on the scene but from what I understand you can still do the one click root as long as you revert back to cupcake (RC7 for europe, RC29 for US? You will need to check). You can't do it on Donut (Which is 1.6 is it not?).
I might be way off, so hopefully someone more experienced can help you.
As far as the rest is concerned, I have no idea, sorry.
Sigh. i think you're correct -- i already have the 1.6 - Donut. Grrr.
Now i gotta figure out how to get back down to 1.5.
Thanks, zamtetsuken, that was a great help. Maybe i should just stick to the "If it's not broke, don't fix it." routine.
What advantages have you seen with your change to root?
Have a great afternoon!
You're most welcome.
I have been reading (and watching videos) from this website: http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/htc-g1-dream/ today and they have videos that show you how to get back to cupcake, the 1-click root for the G1 and other good stuff.
I haven't actually done it yet, I am trying to do a lot of reading before I do try it, just so I don't mess things up. I know which rom I want to use but some methods require to have a SDCard reader when you're flashing the radio, rom etc, so I need to see if there is a work around as I do not have one. All I hear is good stuff about rooting though, apart from obviously those who brick their phone.
If you do it please let me know how you got on .
If you're running 1.6, part of one of the threads says that you can format your SDcard with your telephone! You don't need a card-reader. i don't have one either and am running PCLinuxOS 2009, fully updated on my home computer.
Have a great afternoon! and thanks for the link to the videos!

Yeah, I knew about the format option in 1.6 but in one of those videos once he reverts to cupcake (I believe) he takes out the SD Card while the phone is off and then puts the files on the card and then puts it back into the phone and switches it on. I will have to find out whether I can do it differently,
Thanks for the reply , you going to try it?

Am still trying to find an answer to a couple of questions, like will we have access to Market again? Whether i can set Google up with the kind of buy-as-you-go minutes that i have in Mexico through TelCel and wondering how i'm going to obtain all those WEP keys i've got on my present phone again.

You do get access to Market again. It just seems to work exactly as before . I am not sure how you would get the WEP keys again .
Hey! Congratulations!!! Wow! i'm stuck on the "Set up Gmail." Since i don't have a 3G Plan i'm in the process of getting past STEP1, Sub-section 6 -- lol.
i'm going to call a friend - my son-in-law - and get him to read off the APN settings on his G1. i set it up for him and i think we use the same carrier, TelCel. i need the MCC and MNC settings - i think, in order to get WiFi on this. Then i can set up Google and proceed.
i also had some strange things happen even in Sub-section 4! But it's fixed, so we're still hangin' in there.
Thanks for posting again, Congrats!, and have a wonderful evening!

Just got a Rogers Captivate (i896) - New to Android & Rooting, Couple questions

Hey everyone, I just recently got a Samsung Captivate with Rogers, which is the i896.
I've been hearing a lot about rooting lately and i'm starting to understand a little more about what it is exactly. I'm interested in the idea that it can help speed up the phone and allow for more apps, but I have a few questions.
1) Where can I find the most recent way to root a ROGERS Captivate? I was reading around and read that the "One click fix" does not work anymore
2) Will rooting my phone change the interface of the phone?
3) If something goes wrong and my phone doesn't root, can I go back to the default settings easily?
I might have more questions later on but thats it for now. I'd just also like to hear your opinions on rooting and what exactly YOU have been able to do with your phone by rooting.
Thanks!
welcome ill answer your qs first then ill give you some links to help you out
A)rooting and flashing roms (2 diff things) are easiest done from STOCK 2.1 (which you should have) if you plan on flashing custom roms DONT do the rogers/samsung keis firmware update. it changes the recovery to 3e. (ink below if needed)
B) rooting does not change the interface. ROMS DO
C) if you cant successfully root, nothing has changed. you should be able to tho. and you can UNROOT, and wipe to factory too. for warranty repairs and they will never know.
OPPINION:
custom roms are the way to go, more current, full featured complete and on time, cutomizable, fun, and brain-power using than stock roms.
MY ADVICE: DO IT but TAKE YOUR TIME AND READ. I READ FOR 3 or 4 days before i touched a thing!! and still had very minor issues and things that had to be ironed out. dont let that scare you. its a learning experience. hopefully with the links i give you you will have less SEARCHING TO DO. but you my freind, are in the right fourm and right section, too! i have a good feeling about you already!
YOU CAN DO IT WATERBOY!!!

oh and it took me forever to learn that there is an ODIN one-click, and an Odin3 1.7, both flashing programs but DIFFERENT, we can use ODIN one-click but not recomended it flashes AT&T stock back. ALSO not to be confused with one-click ROOT,,,
Typically its best to read around but you can use the following for rooting and unrooting
It doesn't change the interface

First of all, thank you guys so much for giving me real replies instead of a bunch of "Go read for yourself" or "try the search button" lol... I've been doing some reading but I needed to ask a few direct questions.
@Trusselo, i'm not too ignorant to computers. I know my way around a computer and used to do some web design and basic coding so i'm somewhat okay.
My only concern is that once i've rooted my phone, I have to use some sort of unix/linux commands to work around my phone and do things? Is this true? Also, I read that the rooted version has a different keyboard? I still have a hard time getting used to this touchscreen board.
SIDE QUESTION ABOUT CAPTIVATE AND WIFI: This is my biggest problem right now, its actually a small problem but it gets annoying. Basically, my WiFi stays connected when i'm at home but sometimes it seems like it slows done or the connection lags or even stops working. I can usually tell if this is happening because pages don't load fast enough in the browser or don't load at all. While this is happening, my wifi connection still says "Connected" though. I always have to go back, disconnect, re-type my password, connect again. Then I go back and it works fine. Is there any way to fix this?

Just rooting the phone does not change the interface at all. Rooting just allows you access to the locked system files so you can change them.
Also you won't have to use terminal commands to do hardly anything, but it would be a good practice to learn how to use it.
From there you can change your keyboard if you like. There are a few keyboards out there that are better than the stock keyboard is, as far a functionality.
Be warned once you get onto flashing and modding your phone, its like an addiction, and you probably wont be able to stop.

i really hope that you didnt think i was accusing you of not being good with computers or being patronizing, i was just trying to provide you (or anyone else that reads this) with as much info as i could, while not doing the work for you.
terminal commands: ive never had to use them, no adb shell, no terminal emulator on phone, although it wouldnt be outside of my skill, i just prefer to do it without learning something i dont need to. (yet.. still thinking about learning some apping)
keyboard: rooting does not change any part of the UI at all, all rooting does is allow you to access (read / write / copy /delete) protected system files. And you can only do those scary things with use of other root apps after rooting your phone.
wifi: this is why some people flash new modems, if you still have issues and really want to send it back for warranty, dont worry, you can have it back good as new in no time!
Not too sure what you mean by flash new modems... ? And I wasn't accusing you of anything lol. Just letting you know that i'm not 100% dumb when it comes to computer but even then I don't know if I would be ready to use typed commands and stuff to use my phone.

The modem is simply what the phone uses for connectivity. It is a separate piece of the firmware that can be flashed on its own. It is a topic that is a little beyond the scope of this post. However, there is a stickied thread in the Captivate development forum called 'the modem thread' that outlines a lot of the information. The main reason many people do this change is that some experience better connectivity, lower battery consumption, and some other benefits. Again modems are beyond the scope of this post, so I encourage you to read that sticky, as there can be some pitfalls to changing modems. Best of luck and enjoy the great phone!
Oh okay thank you. I thought you meant I would have to take my phone back and get a new one. The WiFi works fine, its just that I have to disconnect, enter my wifi password, then reconnect sometimes for it to work properly.
Do you mean that the WiFi is something that can be changed after the phone is rooted to work better?
Can't say for sure, but it's always worth rooting anyway.

Newb questions about rooting, recovery, and ROMs

I know there are guides, but it's hard for me to follow how much applies to my specific case, and how much risk there is in applying those methods.
I have a Moto G6 with Stock software (build OPS27.104-15-10). Here are some things I would like to learn about.
1) Root: This would allow me to use tethering, among opening other doors, correct?
2) Install TWRP: This I just see as a useful step in playing with custom ROMS.
3) Install Custom ROM: I want to customize lock screen and various buttons, but my stock ROM doesn't support much.
I've always used my Android phones (HTC Hero, HTC EVO, HTC One M8) with root and custom ROMs. But I never knew much about the process other than to follow certain steps that would take me there. With TWRP, I could download ROMs, run them, and switch back whenever I wanted. Is there a simple recipe that gets me there with the G6? I don't need a zero risk solution, but I'd like to know if it's been reliable for most people.
I apologize if this has been spelled out already elsewhere. Feel free to point me there if that's the case. Thanks!
1. Which kind of tethering are you talking about? If you mean to share your data connection with other devices, root doesn't really help achieve this. It all depends on your carrier. There are workarounds such as PDANet on the Play Store.
2. There are (at least somewhat) functional builds of TWRP available in the ROMs section of this forum.
3. As of now, custom ROMs not available. Since there's a TWRP, development will hopefully take off soon.
Nowadays, rooting isn't so simple and should be taking seriously. Before you do anything, I highly recommend that you read everything carefully and research on how to recover if something goes wrong. We don't want you to have a bricked device.
Re 1: I was talking about sharing my data connection over Wifi. I'm on Sprint, and my old HTC One M8 running Cyanogen could tether. So there's certainly a way to do it, but my G6 with stock gives me permission issues. I tried PDANet, but it said it doesn't support my carrier.
I suppose I'll hold off on this for now until I can see a clear path or a clear benefit. I hadn't realized that this process might be more difficult on newer phones. Does this vary with brand and model? If I were picking a phone over again, how would I know if there was good custom ROM support? Just by reading the XDA forum for each phone I'm interested in?
Thanks!

I'm on Sprint with a bone stock G6. Data sharing works fine (Settings > Network & Internet > Hotspot & tethering). I think the previous poster is right: You have to have a plan that allows tethering for it to work.
My old phone worked, and it was on the same Sprint plan that I have now.
