Can you allow a child profile access to joining WIFI? - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just received my fire tablet and currently setting it up for my daughter as i'm a 'non-resident parent' and would like my child to be able to skype me when away.
One thing i'd like to allow them to do is to join wifi when out at grandparents etc. With the child profile it seems they cannot access settings at all.
Is there a workaround for this? I don't want to give her mum my password to fully unlock the tablet just to join wifi.

If you join the network once I think it should reconnect automatically ... so you may just have to get the connection set the first time. Maybe give her mom a temporary password to get it set up and then change it?

Hmm yeah that's ok for a one off, but what about when they go out and about places or on holiday somewhere with free wifi.
The parental controls seem a little bit unfinished.
You can either:-
1)Make a child profile where they can only run a few apps
or
2)Allow them access to your 'parent' profile, but turn on parental controls.
The problem with 2 is they can access ALL the settings in the settings app, bar parental controls. and you cant limit access to sideloaded apps ( play store etc)

Just found another issue. If you turn on Parental controls ( in your own adult profile) Block Amazon store purchases/downloads , but you can still open the amazon app store. You may not be able to see the store itself but you can see all the apps you have previously installed in the past and it even lets you download them without a password!

[Q] Nook HDs can't host Minecraft PE games

We got two of our boys a pair of Nook HDs for Christmas. They freaking love them, but as they were used to constantly playing on mine and my wife's phones, the NookOS was off-putting.. Plus, most importantly, it seems to be a known issue that Nook HDs cannot host Minecraft Pocket Edition games that other players on the same LAN can join. Thinking I was smart and cool I rooted the Nooks and installed CM10.2. The problem is that while they can see and join games being hosted on any other devices on our home wifi (kindle fire, Razr Ms) the two Nooks cannot host games themselves.
Could this be some sort of a hardware issue? I don't see how, but what the freak do I know? Could it be an internal setting that wasn't overwritten by installing Android?
Any ideas or help will be much appreciated. They're great kids, very grateful for the tablets, and they don't whine or complain. I would just love to make this work for them.
I think you need this:

If pocketmine will allow my boys to play together on the same world then I will get it. I'm looking at the site and it isn't immediately clear what exactly it is? It installs on the PC, is it something that helps create a server accessible to Minecraft PE players on the same network as the PC?
Just like that recent South Park episode I'm a typical adult who has no freaking idea what Minecraft really is. I find it totally inexplicable.

OK, I'm reading through the getting started section and it looks like this might be exactly what we need. Ideally someone would have been able to just give me an internal setting that would allow those Nook HDs to host games like any other android device, but in the absence of that this will be awesome. Thanks, man!

The Nook HD and HD+ certainly can host Minecraft PE (MCPE) multiplayer games on the same LAN! We have been doing this at my house since I outfitted the whole family with Nooks this Christmas. I found that the best way to do this long term is to dedicate a computer that is always on, like a desktop, as a server, but let me tell you how to do it without that:
**Note that the following instructions apply to Minecraft PE version 0.8.1
You have to have "Local server multiplayer" enabled in the MCPE settings screen on the nook that will be the "Host/Server" (you may need this set on every nook, but I'm not certain of that), and you need to know what the IP address is for the Nook that will be the Host.
You can find the IP address to your device (which can change but typically doesn't that often for most home WiFi) from the Nook home page tap on the settings icon in the upper right corner, then choose settings > all settings > Wireless & Bluetooth, and once there tap on "Find other networks" . On the next screen tap on your network's name and a pop-up will appear with information about your network. The last item on that pop-up is the "IP Address". This is what you need to write down.
Start up MCPE on the host Nook, and configure a new game the way you wish or just open an existing game you wish to share. Be sure to change the default name from "My World" to something more meaningful, also change your players name (on the same config page as "Local server multiplayer") from the default "Steve" to an actual name on each Nook or you will see a bunch of "Steve"s in the game and not know who anyone is.
With your game running (ie you can move around the world ) on the host Nook, set up each nook that you want to join your game like this:
After launching MCPE, and taping "Play", tap on the "Edit" button and the "New" button will change to say "External". Tap on the new "External" button and the "Add External Server" page will come up. This is where each player's nook will be set up to talk to the host nook, all you need is that IP address you wrote down, and a unique name for the server like "Shared Game" or "Dad's World". Don't change the port number! Tap on "Add Server" when done and it will show up on the "Play" page as the name you chose, with the IP address and port number.
To test, tap on the new game and it should load just like any other map. If it cannot connect to the host nook, double check all of your settings, make sure both Nooks have WiFi enabled and are on the same network.
That is all there is too it. For some reason the nook, even when rooted and booted in to Cyanogen, never broadcasts itself as an available server. BUT, if you use a different device/computer it will.
I had an older Android tablet that will automatically show up on every nook when it hosts a MCPE game. I configured it just like I described above and instead of having to manually add a server for it on each Nook, the Older tablet (running stock ICE) shows up in every MCPE game list in blue text with a wifi icon flashing! This makes it much easier to let people join in.
FYI, when a non-Nook Minecraft "host" broadcasts that is is sharing a game it shows the Player name, and not the name of the game. Not sure why that is.
Let me know if I can be of any help, it is incredibly fun to have the whole family playing minecraft together.

Holy shisse, man!! You are awesome!! I have scoured the internet looking for help and you are the only person I have found who has actually addressed the question. When I get home I will try this out. My boys will be so excited.
Just as a side question, do you know why it is that joining a game hosted on a non-NOOK device is as simple as hitting the play button? Any games being hosted on another Android or Apple device on our LAN just show up in blue at the top of the list.
Regardless I am soooo excited. My boys will think I'm a hero.

Thanks, I am glad I am able to pass on that hard earned information.
I wish I knew why the Nooks don't broadcast Minecraft PE games and yet other devices, even other android devices running ICS do it just fine. I can tell you that it seems to be hardware based though as I was testing both under the Nook OS and with an N2A SD card that boots into Android 4.2 and I could never get my Nook HD to broadcast a shared game, even though it shared them just fine if you knew the IP. Rooting made no difference either.
I thought it was a bug with MCPE until I got the broadcast working on my complete POS No Name 2012 Black Friday special 7" Android tablet. That little tablet has been doing nothing but running MCPE for days now and just keeps chugging along. (turn down all graphics settings on the host if you have troubles) I liked the idea so much that I resurrected a similar tablet with a broken screen to do the same thing but it hosts a survival mode game instead of creative. Before I had the two "Servers" up my kids would fight when they wanted to play MCPE, if the Host nook wasn't on or wasn't playing then none of the client nooks could.
ProTip: Install a widget that displays your IP address so that you can quickly give it out if/when it changes. This is helpful if you can't leave your nook on all the time. Look for "Ip Widget" in the play store.
Let me know if I can be of any help

You could probably host an MCPE game on an old (4th gen or newer) ipod touch, or any phone running Android 3+ or ios 5+, even phones without service. Using something other than your Nooks would make the game show up automagically, and it would be available as long as the host device is plugged in.
I am 90% sure that you could use a Raspberry/Pi device as a minecraft server, but I have never tried. :cyclops:

I am especially excited to show my boys how I got the help to get things working. Using sites like this one can be a lifesaver. Hopefully, I can get them interested at a young age so that at least one of them will go on to be someone who contributes hard-earned knowledge like this, not just a grateful parasite like their old man.

Ok, lets check a few things:
1. Make sure that both nooks have hosting checked.
2. Check that you have the correct IP address for the host Nook.
3. Make sure that Minecraft is actually running on the host, and that it has a "world" loaded. (It must be actively playing)
4. Make sure that all nooks are on the same network; it wont work across the Internet.

Create a http proxy for ios?

Hey guys, so I get my raspberry pi today, and one big thing I can't find is a way to use the raspberry pi to make a http proxy compatible with ios to avoid people trying a man in middle on public wifi, and get around firewalls/restrictions. My ipad gives me the option for a server, a port, and authentication on/Off after you go to setting>wifi>network name info>http proxy set to ON. I want to create my own proxy for us on the IPad, but don't want to use a full VPN (another area of settings). The main reason is it is a school ipad with MDM profiles on it where a VPN will get me in trouble, but there is no rule against a http proxy. So if anyone knows a way to do that, that would be awesome. I am going to create a full VPN server for use with my laptop, android phone, and android tablet, but can't use it for the school ipad. Anyone help would be useful. Any chance this would work with openvpn? It seems more simple and compatible than a hamachi setup.
Out of curiosity how do they track you? Can you leave school with it? If they are watching your traffic you can always use say ssh or SSL over VPN to mask the traffic. You should check out the app fiddler for your pc and use it to see what's going on in the background of that iPad as I'm assuming you obviously would be in deep trouble if you jail broke it. ☺

Yes, I can take it home. I'm sitting in my bed messaging you on it atm. Also I can't jailbreak it because the profiles on it won't allow me to connect to a PC. They have the mobile device management profiles on it so they can track all of my apps, wifi connection, os version, view some settings, secure their wifi password through it (fiber optics hitting up to 50 mb/s), and they have IP address filtering. I can upload it, but I got an email saying to stop playing a game and sent me a picture with my ipad name, the app name, and the IP address it was accessing. I believe with the proxy since it's under settings, and I can set the IP as a static IP to what I want at home for the pi, they won't be able to figure it out and think it a website or weird app connection, and can't tell what it is exactly. They already caught a ton of people downloading the open door app that is basically a web browser and proxy app wrapped together. I just want to use the fast speeds and not have my games and some of my blogs blocked, but not have to leave my phone in my backpack attached to my 22,000 MaH external battery to tether all day and not kill my phone. Especially with my smartwatch and bluetoothheadphones battery life is very precious.

[Q] how does CC really works?

Hello i've bought a CC a week ago but am really disapointed with it .
what i want from this device is to stream local pics and videos to tv but unfortunately
my country is blocked by google :S so i am forced to use vpn and connictify ((which is not a good
solution!)) If i dont use vpn my phone or tablet or pc cant find the cc to stream..
So thats my question ,how does CC really works?
Is google using thier dns to check my region (( i am from syria))
Is there any easier way than " Vpn or Smart Dns " to bypass it .
i dont really care about netflex or any other streaming services i only want to share
local pics and videos without vpn so please help if any one can
Except for the Netflix app, all Chromecast applications load from the Internet.
Also, Chromecast is hard-coded to use Google DNS servers.
How it works is:
Chromecast broadcasts its presence on the network
Application that supports Chromecast finds the Chromecast on the network and allows users to select it
Application makes a request to the selected Chromecast
Chromecast receives the request and queries the application Whitelist over the Internet to determine the proper handler (application)
Chromecast loads the handler (application) from the URL in the Whitelist
Application communicates with the handler (application) on Chromecast
Since Google is blocked, step 4 fails, and Chromecast doesn't load the handler for the application, hence no communication with the app.
For your purposes it sounds like a Miracast device and screen-mirroring would be more appropriate.
Thanx for you answer . The funny thing there are alot of google services that is working in my region only a few arent ((google play store , google earth , chromcast , and few others))
So the only solution is to use vpn right ?
i dont know yet if i use for example youtube on cc then switch to other app and cast then back again to youtube will it check for youtube handler again ? And if not how long can it store the application handler ? What i am thinking is if i can connect it using vpn and load couple of apps then switch to my normal wifi . I wonder how long it could last .ill give it a shot today.
The last app usually remains cached - but most apps will time out after a period of inactivity and return to the wallpaper.
If your Chromecast is not rooted, then the DNS redirect needs to be done outside.
Check the Can I use a DNS other than Google? section in my FAQ for options.
Ok i figured out that i only need to connect to vpn once and wait till i get the guest mode number, then switch back to my normal wifi network and everything is working till i power off the CC ,then i need to repeat the process again.
so does google check my region only once ?
Since your issue seems to be DNS-related for accessing the whitelist, as long as you don't change apps, return to the wallpaper, or restart it should remain cached.
As i have read we can block google dns by using static route in router . Ive tried that but still without vpn it cant work .
Have the same question with OP, seems like can't work without VPN, any solution?

you might want to check out other solutions instead of a chromecast.
other android tv boxes have similar functions, like Eshare or Miracast.
That should work without VPN.

I am in dilemma now...

I am in dilemma now , don't know should I keep my Nexus 5 32 GB rooted with Adaway, You Tube Adaway and Xposed working more than fine or go for S6(getting a great deal on 128GB) and use Samsung Pay but get annoying ads everywere..
I am on Kangakat Rom by IB4STid and literally have no problems with this phone other than maybe battery life .
I know that camera, screen , processor, fast charge on S6 can blow N5 out of water but the whole experience with Nexus 5 was pretty good especially seeing other people having to look at ads everywhere and their relatively new phones being slowed down by bloat and my N5 working faster..
Need some help here my fellow xda riders
Edit: Got an S6 tonight ,now how to disable ads without root?
ABP (ad block plus) is a non-root option to remove ads from browser, but there's no solution for youtubes ads unless you root.
you install ABP and setup network settings for every wifi connection you connect to and your APN settings for when using mobile data, the setup really isnt all that bad (i originally scoffed at having to set the settings to every wifi network, but in actuality i don't use that many networks so its not a big deal in the long run), the app gives you simple to follow instructions (set proxy to localhost and port to 2020 for each network, done)
with that said, i finally solved an issue i was having and discovered ABP will in turn cause MMS not to function properly when its active.
This means if youre connected to a wifi connection with ABP setup in its settings, or setup APN for ABP to work on data, picture messages etc will not send or receive until you disable it.
that was a deal breaker for me, uninstalled ABP the day i figured it out, now I just deal with the ads, but it's the only solution I found for non-rooted users

that was a deal breaker for me, uninstalled ABP the day i figured it out, now I just deal with the ads, but it's the only solution I found for non-rooted users

Thanks for the reply . I do have unlimited mobile data and rarely using wifi, but like you said would still have mms problem even with mobile data only.
Do you have to start this app every time before you open browser or not? Also , how safe is to use this app since all traffic is redirected thru it?
Will you recive missed mms once app is disabled?
Once you set it up its active, if you know anything about computers its basically just a local proxy to route traffic through that filters ads out.
As far as "safe" goes its all handled local so data like passwords etc never gets stored in outside servers or collected anywhere.
If mms comes in while abp is enabled on wifi/data you get a dl button but will fail to dl until abp is shut off.
For example if abp was enabled on data connection youd make a new apn with all the original settings and enable proxy with abps proxy config. Once that apn is active mms will show a dl button and always fail. To retrieve the mms you would swap back to the original apn and then hit the dl button on whatever mms came in. Not sure if it would auto dl once abp is disabled though
Its free and easy to setup so id suggest just trying it out to answer youre questions. Just know when mms breaks thats why and the solution is to just undo the settings wherever youre data is going through
When I heard that it will brake mms I went different route and installed Adguard for Android. It works pretty well, just needs to be disabled if using tethering..Trial versions is 14 days after that $9.98/year. No more ads , only on YouTube.

I've been using this app for more than 2 week now , as well as my new phone..
Pros:
Well app is great , like I said there is no ads what so ever in chrome browser nor in apps. The only one that still got ads is YouTube App and that is on the beginning of the video (I usually get this kindle tablet app that I can skip after few seconds). There are no ads in the middle of YouTube App videos which is nice. If you wanna use You Tube through browser you will not have any ads. So far I think it saved me more than 1GB of bandwidth which is crazy - Blocked ads 51319( awesome). Customer support is great. Somebody answered when I called on Saturday afternoon. My phone is still not rooted.
Cons :
It is a battery eater (in my battery settings this app is #1 in % when screen is off(I dont know if I can disable AdGuard when screen is off). On stand by during night time it shows AdGuard 17% followed by Android OS at 15%. I've lost around 1% per hour(which is not that bad I guess).
Notification icon is in the notification bar and you CAN NOT remove it or hide it( little annoying). Also when you pull notification down there is message : VPN is activated by AdGuard( this sits in your pull down notification all the time) .
You have to disable app if you intend to use mobile Hot Spot and Tethering.

Somehow I can not disable this specific app notification . After pull down when I long press on this "VPN is activated by AdGuard" it shows Android System. ..
In my opinion, don't.
I moved to S6 from then N5 and regret it. Sure the specs are better, but to me it wasn't enough to justify the switch. The N5 and its vanilla non bloated, overall experience to me has been much better than the S6. The moment I have money for the N5X I will be running as fast I can towards it. Id trade mine in right now if i could but gotta pay down the installment plan thing. Ive owned countless phones over my lifetime and N5 stood out as my all time favorite.

Just downloaded the 14 day trial to see it for myself. I see what youre talking about, the actual adguard icon vanishes but the key icon that says "VPN is protected by adguard" stays
I'm not entirely sure, but I think the issue is that icon isnt actually adguard specific, but VPN specific, and theres no "app" to block in the list inside S6 settings because its some kind of internal feature
I could be completely wrong, that's just a guess. I notice inside adguard settings theres an option to remove icon, but it only hides the shield, not the key.

[TASKER] Looking for some tasker profile ideas. Post your tasker profiles here!

So I just discovered the magical world of tasker, and am loving it! Totally worth the money, and one of the best apps to have (the best if you know how to maximise its use)! I have been experimenting a bit with it, so I don't have many profiles. I'm sure many folks here will be using tasker and would be having some great profiles, so I'm looking forward to hearing some suggestions! The profiles I use are:
1. WiFi off at night, from 00:45 to 08:00, except WhatsApp, Play Store, Quora
2. Airplane mode at night, from 00:30 to 07:00
3. Use of interactive CPU governor when using Real Racing 3, and revert to lionfish governor after exiting app(Kernel adiutor profiles do this for me). I also added a condition to use auto-rotate when playing the game, and revert to portrait orientation after closing the app.
4. Auto-sync every two hours, from 08:00 to 20:00 (I would like to improve this to auto-sync only Gmail, would welcome suggestions on how to do this from any tasker experts out here )
I would love to implement more profiles and automate my phone, so looking for ideas.
Need a tasker profile which can disable my mobile data only for some specific apps.it means If I start those apps then my mobile data would automatically disabled and when I close them Data service should be enbled. If u can help on this then That wud be very helpfull
Nothing very fancy for me - right now just have it turning on my wifi hotspot when it detects my car's bluetooth connection so my stereo can use the internet.
It sounds like you are taking it pretty far, @varunadi. You should check out https://www.reddit.com/r/tasker for more cool ideas.

I'm still finding my way around tasker, reading a lot of tutorials so once I figure it out I'll let you know.

I don't know if you can disable mobile data entirely (not just background which Android can do already) for just certain apps.
Perhaps it would be easier to use something like Netguard.
I've never used it but the description says "Applications can individually be allowed or denied access to your Wi-Fi and/or mobile connection."

Can't the secure settings plugin be used for that purpose? Toggle data on/off I mean.

I was actually going to suggest that as I have it installed already but when I tried it didn't work.
The "Mobile data" toggle was unavailable because it claims I don't have root. However, I'm definitely rooted and there's no listing (saying denied or otherwise) in SuperSU for Secure Settings so it didn't even ask for root. I'm not too surprised as SS hasn't been updated in over a year and a lot of the Play Store comments mention mobile data toggle specifically not working either (among other things). Too bad as it was pretty powerful and of course I think I paid for it right after its last update.
Not getting SS working for me might just be my problem and perhaps someone else can get it going.
I was also going to suggest [APP][2.2+][ROOT] Toggle Data 5.0 (xda-exclusive free version) but then I read more about what @anks095 said which was "can disable my mobile data only for some specific apps" so I'm guessing he just wants certain apps restricted and not all (although the next sentence seems to say otherwise but I might be reading it incorrectly). I'm not too sure that can be done via Tasker/SS - my guess is that it's an "all-or-nothing" kinda thing for mobile data so the VPN thing might be the only way.
I use a similiar app called automagic but some of the things that I got my tasker like program to do are: lockscreen enable/disable through wi-fi at trusted places (don't like geofencing due to battery), when connected to the bluetooth of my car. Auto silent 5 min before a meeting, but if not connected to my smartwatch then vibrate. And lastly sms emergency location request where my family can send a keyword and my phone will automatically send location.

How is the lockscreen one working for you? I find the built-in SmartLock to be really unreliable but when I tried to do lockscreen stuff before (last year) there was some bug in either Tasker or Secure Settings that would sometimes keep your screen black with just the nav buttons visible present. I'll have to re-try now.
That sms emergency request thing sounds cool! Can the recipient open the location in Maps to see exactly where you are?
Without issues I set it so that it clears the password. Makes it so that I have to swipe to unlock. As for the location, yes it sends coordinates and the user in the other end taps it to bring up Google maps.

Thank you very much - clearing the password was the key! I had been trying before to disable the keyguard entirely so I wouldn't even have to swipe but that's where the problem/bug came in. Thinking about it that makes more sense to have at least a swipe because I'd end up calling people from my pocket by mistake. So thanks again!
Tasker...hmmm. Bought it, but much to complicated for me. Macrodroid is much easier to understand and can also do complicated automation with a normal user friendly interface. I tried to like Tasker, but the more and more I tried the more stupid I felt.
