Follow the instructions to backup and then flash the AOSP dialer and contacts in TWRP. This worked perfectly for me on my Turbo.
Works great. Thanks!
I'm considering flashing this. Then I got to looking at these apps in the play store. Of course it shows that they're incompatible with all my devices, but my question is to ask if after flashing this, has anyone tried updating to the updated apps that are in the Play Store? Of course if I don't get a response in the next few minutes, I'll probably give it a shot anyway. After a nandroid, naturally.
I was able to get the contacts to install and initiated, and the dialer installed, according to Aroma, but for some reason, it wouldn't initiate. I suspect it's something to do with it being CM. I recall that CM somehow broke the dialer compatibility, back in either 10 or 11...

The original write up didn't pan out for me. I renamed the stock dialer and contacts, extracted the ones from the .zip and put them in the folder where dialer and contacts were. System>priv-apps>Dialer/Contacts. I then rebooted and they seem to be working, time will tell. There doesn't appear to be the oft desired Call Blocking. I think that's only on the newer versions, Marshmallow only. The newest versions of these apps that are on the Play Store won't work either, as they're MM only.

I did the same thing. On CF's 1.2.5 odex ROM, renamed the existing dialer.apk and contacts.apk, flashed the zip, and it worked.

Flashing the .zip wasn't panning out for me. When I did it that way, I didn't have a dialing app. I could go to contacts and initiate a call from there, and it would ring through, but there wasn't an interface for the ongoing call. I couldn't close the line. I removed the .apks from the .zip and placed them in the appropriate folders then rebooted. Really only had one incoming call, yesterday, and it was fine. I don't think that we have video call though, not that I've ever used it, but I didn't notice the icon for it.
Can somebody help me out? I'm trying to figure out the difference between the 5.1 stock contacts and the Google contacts zipped with the Google dialer in the OP. I'm comparing the 2 side by side on my phone and I swear I cant find a difference. I know the Google dialer has differences I am specifically asking about the contacts app. Thanks.

couldn't get this to work on my droid. i tried the OP way by deleting the folders and letting the flash repopulate them, but the problem is that the zip's folders aren't 'contacts' and 'dialer', but rather 'googlecontacts' and 'googledialer'. i tried to flash and then to rename the contacts and dialer apks, and replace them with the new ones, but i still didn't have a dialer to speak of on my phone after reboot.
anyone find another way that works? i would really love to have this dialer...
I renamed the .apks inside of the Contact and Dialer folders to .bak, then flashed this file.
By the way, I believe that these Google .apks have been updated, but I don't have a clue how to make a flashable .zip. Anyone want to have a go at it?

this is where my hangup is. the folder structure in my system is priv-apps>dialer>dialer.apk; in the flashable zip it's priv-apps>googledialer>dialer.apk
whether or not i rename the original file or delete it entirely, the new dialer apk just isn't routing to the same directory. guess i'll have to be patient and keep on with what i have...

Odd, in the flashable .zip, and as installed, mine drills down as: priv-app>GoogleDialer>GoogleDialer.apk. The structure is the same when I drill down into the .zip file that I keep because I have to rename and flash it again after ROM updates. I can't help you beyond that. Beyond my abilities.
If you are running CM 13, download the latest version of gapps stock from open gapps project. You will have Google Dialer. They have white listed our device"quark" as compatible.
Once flashed make sure that you set the app as default in your app settings.

There is not much that i miss about the stock apps on the Fascinate. However, I must say that I do miss the awesome music widget that you can pull down the CD (with album art on it) from the top of the screen. Do you think it's possible to port this over to use?
I have tried taking the apk and odex files from the stock rom and placing them into /system/app but it does not work. I'm not sure if voodoo's new ext4 file format is causing permission issues or what, but either way i haven't been able to get it working. Anyone have any ideas on this? If not, anyone up for porting over the app

Are you on JT's rom? if so don't use an apk with an odex, his system is deodex'ed.
Try the following apk, it should work.
I get "application not installed" when I try to install it. Could it be because there is already a Music app called "Music" on Jt's rom?

That is a system file. You can't just install it. You need to replace the original file with that one with adb or root explorer (or something similar).

adb pull /system/apps/musicplayer.apk
backup that version, copy new version into its place.
adb push musicplayer.apk /system/apps/
?? is that how you would do it? or is that even where it is?
I think it's /system/app
regardless, i have tried this and every time i do it my phone goes to black screen after the VZW screen. It will just sit there. Then when I go back and put the original .apk back in place...it boots right up and works. I have a friend trying to go back to the touchwiz calendar who has the exact same problem. Neither of us can figure it out.

Here flash this through CW and see if it still gives you a black screen.
that worked can you make one for the touchwiz calendar apk too? I'd love to know what you did to make it and what the difference is so i can do it myself.
The one part that stinks is that the widget on the lockscreen is a feature of TouchWiz lockscreen, as it's not work on stock. Once I flashed the puzzle lock it worked.
This is the same file that was modified by Mammon88, all I did was make it an update.zip and I can confirm it works on my phone running DK28
EDIT: Updated zip file to include the new APK mammon just provided.
If you already flashed and its working for you I don't see any reason to change to this zip...

Its easier and quicker to move it to system/app via adb. Just copy LogsProvider.apk from the downloaded zip into your tools directory of your SDK folder. Then type in hitting Enter after each line:
adb push LogsProvider.apk sdcard/
adb shell
su
remount rw
cat sdcard/LogsProvider.apk > system/app/LogsProvider.apk

worked perfect for me. Thank you very much! That log was driving me nuts.

Just a FYI people, I think that this stops future messages from showing in the call log, but it doesn't remove previous messages that are in there. I just flashed this and i see messages in log but i just text'd myself and it didnt show up in there.
Bopchie is correct. If the sms still show in the call log you need to delete them and no future sms will show.

Wish that were true. Unfortunately, new received texts still show up in the log. Even worse is when you select all the texts individually, it also checks the all logs box and when you click on delete, everything is gone.
odd, working fine here.. no new texts are showing up, just ones from before flashing it.

What's really odd is that now all my logs are back to where they were before I deleted all those texts in an effort to get them to stop showing up. Lets see what happens after I just deleted them all again.
so... im still lost. i get that i have to use the .apk or the zip... do i just copy the apk to that folder? or do have to run and install it? or can i just flash the zip as an update in clockwork?? totally lost.. but i definitely need this fix.
First off this work is based on Digiblur's PRL Write Enabler from the Sprint Galaxy S3 forum. I simply modified it & packaged it for our Sprint Galaxy S4 devices.
Here is the original S3 post that this was found in... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159054
Also, post #8 below provides additional info.
I tested it by flashing with TWRP and it worked on my stock, rooted S4 with the MDC and MDL releases.
If you're on a stock rooted Rom and not using TWRP, you can just copy the HiddenMenu.apk from inside the zip file downloaded into /system/app/ and overwrite the one that's there. (You'll need a root enabled file browser to do this of course).
Thanks to Unknownforce here is a version for MJA...

Enjoy!!
This certainly will save me from having to use CDMA WS to switch like I just did yesterday. 55014 was not working well for me in my market so I switched back to 25014.

You mean the install of the zip?
If so, you can pull the APK out of the zip and replace HiddenMenu.apk in the system folder (make a backup first). You may want to also set the permissions to rw-r-r after replacing the system app. Reboot, then you should be good to go.
@ChadH42,
I know it seems like I'm harping on you but I'm really not..
You need to update the OP on - 1. What is this? 2. What does this do? 3. Why is this in the Development Section.. ?
A good OP leads to less questions.. Development Sections aren't for information. That would be considered a Discussion Thread that belongs in General.
Let's keep the Dev section clean from the start.
My suggestion - Edit the OP on the What's/Why's?/How To's and you won't get posts like mine.
To the OP, updated your title as [WIP], and I suggest you provided additional information so that folks aren't bricking their new devices.
I will check in, if you need anything, let me know.
What this MOD does (in case the OP takes a little while to chime in)
What this MOD does is modifies our ##DATA# (select View) menu to allow for the PRL Write option to appear and function. With this menu option, the user can change their PRL on the fly from the device itself by placing a copy of the desired PRL in the root directory of Internal Storage and name it "test.prl" (no quotes), dial ##DATA# (choose View), tap Write PRL, tap the sub-menu option Write PRL ---wait--- and then the device reboots with the test.prl PRL applied upon reboot. Not every PRL works and sometimes it takes a couple of tries.
A tip for multiple PRL options is to, of course, keep a folder of the PRLs you like and keep them labeled in there. Copy the desired PRL to proper place as needed and just remember to rename the copy to "test.prl". Switch back and forth as you please. I hope this helps clear some confusion and helps some find purpose with the MOD like I have.
For a clear set of instructions that I did not want to just copy verbatim, check the link below. Also, if you are having issues with the zip not installing in CWM, just extract the APK from the ZIP (inside the system/app folder), use Root Explorer or your favorite root-access file explorer to place the APK in the APP folder, apply the proper permissions and reboot.

I just tried this mod with the Force ROM and it did the same thing (blank options). The only thing I can think of is that it works with the odex version of the stock ROM so maybe its a problem with deodex ROMs of which Force is one.
O okay. Its currently not a necessary thing for me at the moment, just nice for when I travel to Alabama. Hopefully later on someone gets it working on deodex.

I am actually running it on the Rooted Stock DeOdexed ROM. So I don't think it is an Odex/DeOdex issue...might be a Force ROM issue.
Also, moot point for Force ROM (1.0+) anyway because the PRL Write mod is already included with that.
I'm also having this problem and I'm pretty sure it was working this morning. I haven't flashed anything since then.
edit-- I tried:
1. wiping both cache's
2. killing background process "OIThiddenmenu"
neither fixed it.
I reinstalled the stock odex ROM and flashed this again and it worked.
Just an FYI, OP, I get Error Status 6 when trying to flash this via recovery, which indicates one of two things. Either the format of the file is incorrect or there is a syntax error. The syntax looks fine, but opening in basic Notepad shouldn't "look pretty" like it currently does. So it's likely it was edited with a non-Unix-compatible text editor like Notepad or MS-Word...
To make modifications to an updater-script (or just about any Android/Linux files like this) you need something like Notepad++ or gVim.
Anyways, I did a quick test with this, and it does in fact not work on my ROM as it is, but I see why it's failing, but I don't know what exactly it's trying to reference yet. (It fails with an id number instead of a name, so I'll have to de-compile some things to find it.)
I'm not sure it's a ROM issue or a MOD issue yet. (meaning it might have to be updated for each custom ROM, depending on how they are configured) But I'll track it down and update when I can.

I think TWRP can read the non Unix type characters, which is why it works on a different recovery.
I'm hoping it's a mod issue and I can just modify the mod to work universally regardless of the rom. But we'll see.

Update Why are people using v0 & not v3? V3 has less issues & both have the "no visable dialer issue" for those using stock data. The dialer is fuctional but you have no access without a play dialer app. Now is the time to try out those ones with many features above stock, not really a problem. Stock cannot sort out non phone number contacts- just one limitation of the invisible dialer.
I really like this app! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.startupmanager.full
Even the free version works well. Some apps show as user when they are not. I have it set to boot so that only 12 apps are running yet when I call for one of the "disabled" apps it works.
Use cwmr only.
Still no Dialer for those coming from stock ...79 or ...94.
Get this! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=intelgeen.rocketdial.pro
It has Many features. The bad review on the info page is a BAD REVIEW!
I am back on this as I still find it superior to even 98.30.1 for many things but Bluetooth in particular- connectivity & audio volume.
I found a path for all unlocked Vzw stock'ers, on 98.18.78 (same as 9.8.1Q-78) OR 98.18.94, to upgrade to a newer kernel and have a built in SD swap.
The first rom you flash is just a simple work around for Vzw users.
A facilitator that alters something in a way that Telstra needs to boot with your data partition.
Don't want to stay on this rom. Restore your former system & boot of any of the previous ones & keep your current data! That is right do not wipe data coming or going!
Those on Mhous33's DST or Deodexed roms may not need the Moparman371's facilitator flash. Testing.... Deodexed & DST works on their own!
Dialer & contacts show in launcher.:good::good::good:
Steps needed to install:
DO NOT WIPE ANY DATA!
Start on the newest ...94 OTA or Factory (or the one before ...78) [...66 alpha tester you are]
Start with your activated & rooted (vzw) stock (unlocked bootloader only)
Make sure you have booted up & done google login & used the stock messaging.
Go CWMR (6.0.1.3 or greater, TWRP will not install the attached rom). (see goodies for flashables)
Backup!
Mount system (& keep data- do not wipe anything)
Flash (install) http://d-h.st/2iE {Mhous33 rom users may skip}
Reboot system.
ReRoot on boot is ok but not needed.
Be sure stock messaging works.
Go cwmr
Wipe Cache & Dalvik
Flash/install the the attached rom.
Reboot. Answer NO at the disable recovery flash until xposed (or is it philz?) is set up & the nag is gone!
Update su binary.
Launch Xposed Installer.
Go Framework>Install/Update>reboot.
Ditto>Modules>Check the ones you want, there should be 4.
Reboot.
Enjoy.
Notes on this Rom:
Most important) DO NOT try to activate this system with Google login as you would a normal Rom.
It must be activated via your currently activated data partition.
Vzw users: You will never be able to do a privacy > factory data reset OR a recovery data wipe on this rom. Doing so & then rebooting will bork your radio partition & result is 3g only, but this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391641
is the fix if you do.
Rarely): The Xperia launcher will need to be restarted when you see no home shortcuts visible right after a boot up. : Go app drawer> 3dots> launcher settings > swipe, move right to end > restart launcher.
I have found there were some apps causing this.
1) Use the Razr data widget at your own risk when on vzw it can break the radio.
2) Telstra base from ZaYAC-ua http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2246081

Feel like this rom will either upgrade me from n00b or break my phone...or maybe even break me

Been using touchpal for couple of weeks now it works fine for dialling etc. but i can't figure out how to load previous contacts. I tried using appex to restore contacts from previous backup. it says its working but i don't find any contacts in touchpal after reboot. I have also got all my contacts as vcf files on my sdcard but can't find a way to import them. Also in my text message app when i receive a text and try to save the number it says it can't find the app to save the contact with. After much messing around with permissions etc i finally made touchpal save a contact if i type it in. Also touchpal doesn't seem to be creating any call logs so i can't find any of the previous numbers i dialled. It's all a bit frustrating really.
So i am thinking there must be some way to tell the phone that the contacts app is not the default one it is now touchpal, and perhaps then this will allow me to access android contacts and then import the vcf files? I suspect this is something to do with permissions and/ or android wanting to find a different app to manage contacts. I have been googling a bit but can't find anything useful about how android contacts work and how i can make this all work without having the native contacts app.

No, a) i don't know how to do that and b) i don't have any google stuff set up - i am trying to use the phone without using google's (skynet) services.
I remember importing vcf contacts before using the stock contacts app so i guess what i am really asking is if i can make touchpal do that...and it would be great if i could save numbers from text messages... many thanks as always
Can i upgrade from the original telstra to the v3 version here? And can it be done without losing apps/ messages/ data etc?
Thanks as always...

Can i go from this one back to an XT907 ROM? How about v4.4 or even v5 ROMs?
Anything I need to be aware of to avoid the dreaded bricking.
Thanks...
Does anyone know if there is a way to install the dialer that searches? I believe I was told recently it is a Nexus only feature that allows you to search for a store/business by typing in the name of the business and it will show a list of addresses and phone numbers right from the dialer.
I have had it on my phones (sideloaded) in the past and I was hoping to see it on the L update, but no such luck.
Use Nexus L dialer. There are many sites to download it as: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/download-new-apps-apks-android-5-0-lollipop-preview-images/. But remember: the dialer indeed enable you to search sites but it is not a replacement for Moto phone functionality. So you must keep original phone.apk and dialer.apk in the system.
Thanks for the info, how do I install this on a non-rooted (VZW) Moto X? Cannot access root to push the .so file and the apk won't install.

Did you get it to run? It wouldn't load on mine. It just kept force closing.

In fact I have previous version of Moto x (2013) and I used various Nexus apps many times. I still have Nexus dialer even inverted and it works flawlessly. I believe that it could be installed on 2014 model too if it is compatible with lollipop.
I found the last version of dialer and tried it on my phone. It works and it should work on 2014 as well. I attached the zip. Try this:
Unzip the file and push it with appropriate explorer (as root explorer or similar) to the file where original dialer exist (mine is system/priv-apps). Change permissions to rw-r-r and reboot.
If your launcher supports activities find phone (new) and pin it to the home screen. Otherwise download Anycut form Google Play and find it in its activities.
If this method wouldn't work it means that there is no lollipop Google Phone apk available for downloading yet. It's just a question of time to get one.
In meantime and if you don't have rooted phone you can find a phone app which supports global contacts search. The most popular is CallApp (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.callapp.contacts).

I've gotten the previous dialer to work. It's the new one (2.0) that I can't get to work. The one on the site you linked. I was wondering if you had any luck with that.
I didn't. But if you had previous Google dialer working on Lollipop, do you expect significant improvements with 2.0?
