Thank you so much carth24, I enabled the option and will try if it works tonight but I'm sure it will.
Thank you!
Jesus, I feel stupid.
Thank you so much for your post. I spend the last hour searching for new drivers and a solution.
Did a full wipe earlier and couldn't restore the adb backup.
It applys to any device running AOKP I guess. At least it did to my Galaxy Nexus. Thanks again!

Sadly mtp doesn't work in Linux..
thanks alot bud, that helped me out after about an hour trying to install drivers, lol....
And you know what else is great about this?
If your MTP isn't working great, or being flakey (more often than not), you can select mass storage and give that a go too. But apps using storage data may be stopped I think as it relegates usage to data transfer to computer

Don't know how well this works, but I ran into it searching for something else.
http://gmtp.sourceforge.net/
What about usb thumb drives? I get the message that it is corrupted when mtp is on. If I turn on ptp nothing happens except that I get the message "usb storage is being prepared".
Any idea?
Thanks guy you roxxx
Guys,
I just got one of these tabs recently. I will upload a fix that will allow the corret build.prop updates and file configuration to allow te Samsung tab to work in USB mode always.
On linux the reason why MTP doesn't work is because Samsung tab is transmitting as if it is a camera (which sux quite frankly)and that means your device that is reading the transmission NEEDs to have drivers for that particular device. Allowing the mass storage method that I will make for you should enable the Mass storage on any device....heck you could even plug it into the side of a TV and it will see the folders on your SD card haha
I have this working on other samsung devices, so I can't see why it wouldnt work on the tab? I believe there are kenels on here that say USB host even? So I will assume the method will work. I just have to familarise my self with the partition layout etc on this you-bute toy I now have
Ive come cross from Dev'ing S1, more recently S2 and now this cool lil Tab!
So hi from Aust.

my Windows Explorer (win7 x64) keeps crashing when uploading larger files than 2gb...
also when i try to format the sdcard.
I used the Nexus Root toolkit to flash the latest factory image onto my Nexus 6 but chose not to wipe the data as I've done in the past (as I was rooted, and wanted to flash the security update). In the past, this has worked fine with no issues. I re-rooted using the Toolkit (it flashed Chainfire's Systemless Root as it has done before) afterwords.
After flashing the latest factory image (6.0.1 - keeping data as I have before), the Feb 2016 security patch was applied (according to the settings) and my phone was detected by the toolkit just fine right after (nothing wrong here. It seemed to work just as it has before in the past when I've done this).
A week later however (phone has not been plugged into any PC since), I tried plugging my phone back into my PC and it is no longer detected at all. It no longer appears in explorer OR device manager. I've tried it on multiple PCs, my laptop (both running windows 10 with the Google drivers installed) and even a couple of linux boxes (Mint 17.3 and CentOS - the latter was a Uni PC with the Android SDK) and none of them detect the phone, and the phone just charges from the connection instead.
I've tried:
- 5 different cables (including the one Motorola provided in the box, which I generally just used to charge the phone). Each cable worked fine with my brother's Nexus 4 (detected in ADB etc).
- Uninstalling the drivers via USBDeview (and re-installing them - as the phone doesn't appear in Device Manager, I had to use USBDeview to get rid of the drivers in the first place).
- Unticking USB debugging and re-enabling it.
- Forcing MTP in the storage settings (no 'PC connection' option in the overflow menu in Storage options) but whenever I try and force it to use MTP, it just resets the option back to 'charging' or occasionally it'll set it to MTP but will remain charging (I had to use the storage options under Developer Options to see the MTP setting).
- I've also followed the Driver Configuration guide from the Nexus Toolkit and same behaviour as before.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've already 'been around the block' with other potential fixes and none of them have worked so far.
What's really weird is, it only just started happening but was fine immediatly after the factory image flash which leads me to believe if it were an OS problem, would it not have started happening immediatly after the flash and not left it until now?

So when you plug the phone in, you don't get anything in the status bar saying that it is charging only or that it is connected? When I connect my device, it defaults to Charging Only and a swipe down of the status bar I press to change it to MTP.

Nothing in the status bar. The only difference I see when I plug my phone in is the battery charging icon. It's acting like I've just plugged it into the charger, and not the PC.

Thanks for replying . It's fine. It's a really weird issue, especially since not even device manager detects it (most of the "phone not detected" threads I've found, it's at least in device manager but I haven't even got that - but I did before, which makes it so much harder to debug).

I've tried connecting to it via my laptop as well (also running windows 10 with the drivers) and 2 linux boxes (which should mount it like a drive regardless of the drivers) but it's not even doing that - which is what makes this so strange.
I cleaned out the port in the hope it would be a physical connection issue (a lot of lint in there - although the same amount as before when it worked fine) and I noticed a shiny green piece (almost like a piece of green glitter) on the second from the left pin (if the phone is facing upright) but it doesn't seem to want to come out if I use a pin or something to get rid of it (thinking a possible physical pin connection block. Possible corrosion?).
I was thinking of factory resetting it (it might be a software issue. I don't really know but I'm grasping at straws at this point) but if the phone doesn't connect up to the PC after that - well, I'm at a loss as I won't be able to re-root it etc.
Try this, manually restart the phone in bootloader mode and try connecting the phone WHILE on bootloader.

I've tried that before and it isn't detected by either ADB or device manager.
The bootloader just says "Connect USB Data Cable" and "Battery OK (Charging)" if connected. This case on both the laptop and desktop.
This is using the cable Motorola included in the box (which has worked in the past).

It's fine. Already tried and nothing. The phone is just acting like it's been plugged into a charger and not the PC, so the notification shade doesn't change, neither does the storage options (no "PC connection" under the overflow menu).
Would it be worth replacing the entire port altogether? It doesn't look to be a software issue as it's not even recognised when in the bootloader.
Running out of options here...
Have you tried factory data reset? I know you'll loose your info. But it sounds like it's software related. I had this issue before and factory data reset fixed it. You can use airdroid or something similar to transfer your information. Also you should try to use a OTG cable and see if it will mount.
If you can mount something via OTG then it's not broken, as it uses the same pins.

Tried the factory reset route and it didn't work (and I've lost my Root). Since I had to use a custom kernel to prevent the "this device has been tampered with!" error (SafetyNet I think it's called) when rooting it, I can't apply OTA updates in it's current state either. It's a horrible middle of the road position to be in (no root and no ability to apply OTA updates).
I'll try the OTG method if I can find a cable for it. Am I right in saying, if I plug in a USB stick or something via OTG to the phone - it'll mount it like it would on a PC (drop down option in the notification shade etc)?

That is right will mount as long as you have android m. Otherwise you'll have to download an app with root to mount.

Hi Everybody,
I'm trying to connect my Mi5 with my PC using MTP connection (i'm on Ubuntu). The problem is that I can see the device connected and mounted but i can't copy anything from it. It always crashes. Strange thing I can copy files from pc to the device without any problem, but if i try to copy something from the device to my pc it always says " libtmp: Could not get file from device."
I've also tried with windows, but nothing changed. i cannot copy or transfer any type of file.
While googling around i've found that this might be an Android 6.0 related problem rather that a MIUI one.
But i've also tried a possible solution that has been proposed which consists in changing a configuration under developer option and switch it back but it didn't work.
here's the steps i've followed:
Open Settings
Enable Developer options:
Go to About phone (or tablet)
Scroll to the bottom
Tap Build number repeatedly. After several taps you will see it count down and then say "You are now a developer!"
Back to Settings
Tap Developer options, near the bottom
Scroll down to and tap Select USB Configuration
Change it to Charging only
Tap Select USB Configuration again
Change it back to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)
I don't know how to proceed.
If someone can help me it would be great!

How long do you have to tap build number?` nothing happens here :/
Edit.
Found it tapping Miui rather than build version, but cant find the USB configuration after being in developer mode.
@zofox I don't have a solution but can confirm the problem.
On WIndows 10 latest release, it's working like a charm.
When I connect the Mi 5 to a Usb 2 or Usb 3 port on Ubuntu (same computer) it does nothing, only charging works.
So that means: I am not sure if it's a problem with Ubuntu, your PC or both!

It might be the USB port(s) in question: check if the port used is on some external controller or part of the PCH/southbridge (i.e. part of the motherboard); next up, try direct ports instead of through USB hubs (if any in between). Other than this, I have no further idea.

First go to settings, then click the option 'about phone'.
Then click on 'miui version' several times until u become the developer.
Then go back to settings and find the 'developers option' in the 'additional settings' .
Afterwards look for the 'usb configuration' option in the 'networking' section.
There select the 'mtp' option
This worked very well for me and solved all my problem
change the cable works like a charm, thanks!! you guys save my semester.
This works like a charm to me. Only one thing I have noticed is, in my phone(Mi5) Developer options comes under Additional settings of systems& Device section.

I was facing the same issue in redmi note 5 pro.
I had same on Redmi 5 (rosy), my 'solution' was to drag drop down down, tap Android System and change from 'Charge this device' to 'Transfer files'. I was expecting a pop up when I connected the cable to select what I wanted to do, none came.
Hi everyone,
Loving my 3T, which is stock 4.16, rooted with Magisk, and has TWRP recovery. ADB debugging is enabled in settings.
One thing I noticed that I want to change is that when I plug it into my PC, the USB defaults to "Charge Only" and I have to go into the USB connection settings and switch it to MTP mode. I haven't noticed a way to set MTP mode to be the default behavior. When I plug into the PC it is always to transfer files so I want to set this as the default.
My previous phones remembered the last behavior chosen, I think.
What's the process to choose default USB behavior for the 3T?
Thanks

Tonight I will try it out. I figured I would need to unlock the phone (via fingerprint in my case) but would prefer not to have to poke around in settings each time. I think it is sorted with the change in Dev options. Soon I will know for sure.

For me it seems to work. I'm at work and my work computer is blocked for lots of things, so if it had failed it could be a false negative (hence my plan to try this at home). But, I plugged in my phone to the work computer, and it popped up the directory no problem, as long as the phone was unlocked.
This was a big change from before where I had to first unlock, then get to the menu and change from charge only to file transfer mode.
I will also test at home and see if it works normally there too, but it seems changing this developer setting works at least for me.

Interesting. I tested this repeatedly on my work laptop, and it worked fine (Windows 7), defaulting to MTP as long as the screen is unlocked.
Here at my home computer (also windows 7), it reverts to charging unless I use the pulldown menu to set it to MTP.
The only difference I can think of is the "driver installation" on the laptop failed. But, connectivity was fine.

if yes, just unlock it using face unlock or fingerprint,
plug to pc, and tap around the area where you normally tap "Transfer Files" upon plugging to PC,
hopefully you managed to tap it on the right place,
once it detected by the PC, just do adb pull comand from adb to manually backup data or even whole media
