I installed Google Play from rootjunkies tool but was wondering if it is possible to clear the default application launcher?
I tried to install Nova but I cannot get it to switch to Nova as the default.
"Clear default" is greyed out on the Fire Launcher Settings
thanks
Well there's http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/alternative-launcher-one-click-script-t3239966 though I edited the batch file to copy the amazon launcher to the sd card to reinstall as a non-system app as some are saying some other apps don't like it not being around.
Think once you've prized it out of system you should be able to set nova as default.
@Tomsgt how about updating the supertool with option 8. Replace Fire Launcher? But make a backup before deleting it so that people can install it later...
I had Nova Prime on my Kindle up until a few days ago when the unit updates the OS in the background to 5.1.2. Supertool no longer works for me, I cant install SuperSu and root the unit and consequently can't run the scripts from Supertool. Gutted. I am quite technically minded but wouldnt class myself as skilled, so Supertool was perfect for me, I'm hoping RootJunky will update the scripts as it was a fantastic tool to get rid of FireOS (which is PANTS!)

I just can't figure out the whole rooting thing. But I hate the KFHD's interface. Can I change it, if so, how?
Go to the Amazon App Store, download Easy Installer. Then go to Google and search for a Go Launcher HD .apk file of any version. Transfer that apk file to your storage on the tablet, load Easy Installer and install the launcher. Afterwards, go to your apps and initialize the launcher.

Didn't work for me....
That tells me nothing. WHAT didn't work for you?
I downloaded Easy Installer, got the apk and installed the package. After Go Launcher installs nothing happens. The option to "open" is geryed-out, my only choice is to click "done". After that, Go Launcher doesn't appear in my app list.
Then that launcher isn't compatible with Android 4.0, or at least with Amazon's OS. Apex, Nova, and ADW works fine.

I just wanted to confirm that this method creates an icon where I actually boot the launcher? I've considered the non-root methods to install an alternate launcher but it looks like they all are kind of a "soft" install where hitting the home button actually takes you back to the Amazon OS (requiring you to re-open the alt. launcher.)
You can set it inside the launchers. Nova, for example, allows you to change the function of the home button, when you press it, it asks what launcher is your main one, and when you select Nova, every time you hit the home it will return to Nova.
And yes, it does create an icon in your app drawer.
So I rooted my kindle a couple weeks ago and it was working good, but it got slower and slower. It wouldn't let me do a bunch of things so I finally just reset it to the defaults. Everything was wiped, which was fine, but I still have magic locker, no lock, nova launcher and like three other launchers on it. I opened ES File Explorer and found the files and tried to delete them but it said it cant "Read Only File System". Whenever I turn my kindle screen off it goes crazy with magic locker and the other launchers. How do I uninstall these?
You have to re-root and then enable root browser in es file explorer. Then delete them from there and reboot.

Hello,
I have a Kindle Fire HD 7” from 2012 using Android 7.5.1. After lots of troubles with the ADB drivers I finally got it rooted. Now I’m ready to do cool stuff! The problem is that most things don’t work.
FYI I hace ES Explorer with Root explorer ON and ROM Toolbox Lite.
I would be grateful if you could help me in these issues:
Issue 1: Google play services has stopped working.
Back in 2012 I installed all the google apks following instructions from one of the threads in the forum. Some time ago I started to get the message “Google play services has stopped working”. That’s when I rooted the kindle.
Once rooted, I uninstalled all, downloaded again all apk and reinstalled with google play services version 7.0.99. Same results. Reading forums, sites, watching videos, I tried many ways. I even created the folder and dummy apks i read about in a thread in this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...google-play-services-7-3-28-stopping-t3086528). Still no results. The services dont’ update, I still have 7.0.99 but still does not work. I suspect it is some issue related to the android version... I don’t know...
Issue 2: Custom Launcher
I’m sick of the lame amazon launcher, I tried to install a custom launcher (downloading the apk from apk downloades site). I install the apk but the open button is greyed and I can’t open it. Also, It does not appear on my app library. I tried with Go Launcher EX, hola Launcher, Nova launcher... All the same. I can see them in the app manager (in Settings) so they are installed. I also read threads about this issue and tried moving the apk from /data/app to system/app but even with root explorer ON and RW permission enabled in /system, ES explorer can’t paste the apk there.
So, even I have the most Ironclad version of android or I am useless ant this. Can anybody help me please?
so i'll try my best to help you out on this.
Issue 1: i believe that for whatever, google play and amazon just don't work well even with root, when i rooted my kindle first time i got the google play store but eventually got the same thing you did the whole "google play services has stopped working". So i had to uninstall all of google play and then reinstall to where i just had the android market(If you don't know the market is it's just like a downgraded google play store) but for whatever reasons, it agrees with amazon more then the actual google play store and doesn't crash any.
In short your solution for issue 1 is either uninstall all of google play and only install what you need to have the android market, or go about using a custom rom, like the official cyanogenmod rom, or the unofficial Omnirom and Candy5 rom, as i've never had any sort of google play store trouble with any of those, excluding candy5 as i'm currently flashing that as i type this to try it out.
Issue 2: So this could be one of 2 things.
First off, after you installed the apks, did you reboot your kindle? Yea it's really simple but if you don't reboot the apks don't intialize which could be why you can't access them in the app library. Secondly, i read somewhere on one of the XDA threads about one of Amazons OTA updates making it difficult to install customs launchers, i had a lot of trouble with go launcher ex which is mainly why i finally decided to just flash a custom rom.
In short your solution for issue 2 is to try installing the apks, and then reboot the kindle, see if that maybe initializes them. Or it could be Amazon just locking down harder on its device, which if it is that, you could probaly find some sort of work around, but you'd probably be better off with a custom rom, although if you're a fan of the kindles stock set up try Kinology.
Hope i've helped!

Okay so I rooted and installed apex launcher, and have google services with hangouts/gmail working. When I try to make a gmail widget on my screen it brings me to the settings page, and then the widget is gone.
I tried making apex launcher a system app by putting it's apk file in the /system/app folder that also did not work.
Is there a way to get widgets working?
Can't speak for apex but have no trouble with widgets using either now Launcher or Nova on my wifes, rooted with play services and store (and never registered with Amazon). Initially with now Launcher had to wait for play services update before it worked. Can't remember if I did anything else to get it working but I recall that I originally had the same problem.
I used Nova and made it a system app, and widgets work. I used this app /system/app mover from F-Droid: http://click.xda-developers.com/api...f-droid.org/repository/brows...systemappmover That I found from another thread on here.
I was successful on creating widgets for those apps that I'd made system apps. There are apps at google market which can do so.
I tried both Nova and Apex and converting to system app didn't do it. (So maybe build version matters. I'm running November 12.) Anyway, you may need to install Apex in /system/priv-app (recommended by @martinml and others). First make sure perms on the apk in /system/app are rw- r-- r-- (chmod 644) and reboot. If still no widgets, move to priv-app (confirm perms, reboot).
(Or, as mentioned here and by @sd_shadow in several posts, widgets work with Google Now without conversion.)
Widgets working in Google Now Launcher if you are willing to switch.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I never did get widgets working on the stock rom but i never tried google launcher.. I'm on CM12.1 and never going back. It just works great and widgets work too.

/system/app mover from the Play Store worked perfectly, moving Nova launcher as a system app (running rooted 5.1.1)
Now I have widgets! Thanks!
thank you that did the trick... i was just going to give up and not worry about widgets. had the problem with trying to put widgets and all it did was take me to the settings menu.

So do you just install Nova from the play store then convert it to a system app while leaving Fire OS alone to get widgets to work ? I tried Super tool which deletes Fire OS and installs Nova as a system app automatically, but widgets do not work that way.

I did the same thing and was able to move Nova over to system apps with the /system/app mover without any trouble even with the Fire launcher having been deleted.
Finally! A solution that works!

Thank you so much for this solution...I've been trying to get around this issue on my rooted Kindle Fire for weeks now. Many thanks!
Please help!
I tried the /system/app mover from F-Droid as mentioned above by SilverPony2001 in an attempt to change my Apex Launcher from user/app to system/app. I rebooted and now my tablet screen only comes on and off for a few seconds as if I was pressing the lock button over and over. I'm not sure what to do at this point?

Reload FireOS: https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/unbrick-amazon-fire-7in-2015-5th-gen-t3285294
So i used Root Junkies tool to install nova launcher on my 5.11 amazon fire. I dont particularly care for it. Is there a way to remove it. The app is not able to be uninstalled from the settings.
The batch file made it a system file like the Amazon apps. It's not a bad idea to have two installed tbh.
Anyway before you try and remove it, make sure you've another launcher on the Fire as the batch deletes the amazon one.
Easier to just add another launcher from the store, then pressing home should* give option to switch to it. (Now Launcher is a pain though and for that you need to go to Settings, Apps & Games, Manage All applications, slide across to all tab, find Nova launcher and Clear Defaults. Then press home).
You can delete Nova in a rooted file browser (ES file browser with root permissions maybe), or a system app deletion app, or from shell. You could edit the batch file if you've the file of the new one you want, put it in the pc directory with all those other files and then run it to install that and wipe nova.
How could you get the stock fire launcher back on?
Grab the file com.amazon.firelauncher.apk from OP in this thread
