Help with M8 831C cm12.1 - Sprint HTC One (M8)

I'm a noob with the m8, I've ran cm on several other devices.
Can someone please show me a guide to where you have an unlocked bootloader and twrp? So that I'm ready for cm12.1.
I know there is sunshine, how is this different than htcdev unlock?
I assume I need to gain
1) root (how?)
2) sunshine (is this needed?)
3) twrp (link?)
4) install cm12.1 for 831C

How to gain root with S-Off but bootloader locked

Hi,
My device is currently S-Off. I don't have root anymore and I relocked my bootloader. I'd like to be able to remove the test device message but all the links I found requires to have root or to go back to S-On. I tried using HTC DEV to unlock my bootloader again to flash custom recovery and then to flash supersu.zip but it didn't unlock my bootloader. I also tried to just do a fastboot boot customrecovery.img and also didn't work. Any idea if with S-Off, bootloacker relocked, no root access, I can removed the HTC test device message?
thanks

Check out this thread on unlocking your bootloader without HTCDev. If you are able to do that, then you should be able to flash a custom recovery. You can use the Guru Bootloader Reset tool to remove the tampered sign and I think the test device will go away.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was referring to but I can't run that since I don't have root access. If there could be a temporary way of getting root access with a locked bootloader and s-off, that could probably work to use what's being said in your link
1) Which is the best recovery? C-Mod or TWRP or any other, i mean i want that to support maximum number of stable roms and that is widely used by developers. Can you suggest me a link?
AND
2) For any rooting procedure you first have to S-Off, then unlock the bootloader, root, then install a recovery and flash a ROM..........right?
AND
3) How to be S-Off and rooted and have Locked as a message on the bootloader?

if you're still looking for this, root access is available in custom recovery (so no need to mess with the ROM), and with s-off you can flashed a masked firmware using ruu mode:

[Q] Is it possible to root my HTC One M7?

Hello,
I need help. So I have a regular Verizon HTC One M7 running on 5.0.2 with Sense 6. I want to know if it's possible to root this yet. I've looked everywhere and can't find any luck. Does anyone know if it's possible yet and if so, how? I'm kind of a noob when it comes rooting (first time) so I really don't know what to be looking for. Also, do I have to pay for S-off (What does that even do?) or can I root without it?
Thanks to anyone who tries to help
Google sunshine s off, that will be your best bet, after you get s off u probably unlock boot loader , then using a custom recovery you can root. Verizon is a pain when it comes to rooting

Well the only way you can be able to flash a custom ROM is by gaining S-OFF on this one so that means you will have to pay $25 for sunshine and then install a custom recovery then you can flash the ROMs found in the development forum for the Verizon HTC One. If you are having problems with sunshine as you said that you are on the latest software update from Verizon, you can see this thread for help. Here's an article talking about S-OFF. You might want to check it out. Lastly, you must be wondering why the users of the HTC One from Verizon has to achieve S-OFF before everything else. It's because Verizon has locked the M7 down making it impossible to unlock using HTC Dev and the only way to be able to flash a custom ROM is by getting S-OFF'ed and getting your bootloader unlocked using sunshine.
You can flash a custom recovery by using fastboot and typing the following command in the command line.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <recoveryName>.img
In where <recoveryName> is the name of the custom recovery image you are going to flash.
Good luck!

You'll need to
achieve temp root
use sunshine to unlock the bootloader / s-off --->25$
flash a custom recovery (TWRP)
and you can root flashing latest supersu.zip in custom recovery
Im sure there is some threads in the Verizon HTC One forum explaining how to achieve temp root
Verizon is a pain when it comes to rooting

I don't need S-off because I don't have plans to add a rom. I just want to give apps root access. Can I use HTCDev.com to unlock my bootloader?
EDIT: I read what the guy above me said. I guess I have to pay for Sunshine.

[Q] Pre-root HTC One M7?

Hello,
So I made a thread earlier about my Verizon HTC One M7 on 5.0.2 asking if I was able to root it.
Y'all basically said I need to use Sunshine S-Off to unlock my bootloader so I can root. So I downloaded the Sunshine-latest.apk file and it says I need to "Pre-root" before I can use it. I'm confused. The app that's going to root my phone needs root to work? That doesn't make sense. I now understand that S-off is needed for roms, but I don't want roms. I just want root apps. I'm still confused on why S-off is necessary for root, and apparently root is needed for Sunshine S-off.
Anyways, does anyone know how I can pre-root (Temp root?) my phone so I can use Sunshine? And what do I do after I get S-off to root my phone? Is there anyway I can root without S-off? I just want root access no roms.
Thanks for all those willing to help. Sorry I sound like such a noob (I am)

Right because Verizon asked HTC to block their phones from being unlocked the normal way using htcdev.com website so they can have more control over their customers. With S-OFF you or sunshine can directly write to the PG1FS partition to unlock the bootloader without the need to use the unlock code generated by htcdev.com

Sunshine need at least temp root to work. Achieve temp root, use sunshine to s-off and unlock, flash a custom recovery and then using your recovery you can root for good (permanent root).
I now understand that S-off is needed for roms, but I don't want roms.

Not really but that doesn't matter for now, you can read about what s-off really do later if you are interested. Flashing roms doesn't require s-off, its only requires and unlocked bootloader but yes since your phone is Verizon you need s-off if you want to flash a rom because its the only way to unlock the bootloader. On other variant of the M7, you can unlock the bootloader from htcdev.com so s-off is not needed to flash roms. I know its confusing...

no, sunshine is the only way. it is well worth the $25. I recommend doing it now before the 6.0 update makes it impossible
Now I think I can install nougat 7 on my droid turbo without unlocking the bootloader, I saw the method like Download the Nougat 7 Rom and Gapps file, Copy into the Internal Storage and from recovery mode Flash the Nougat 7 and Gapps.
That's it.
It is possible ??

No. It is not. You have to have the bootloader unlocked to flash anything like this. If you try without unlocking at best it will fail, at worst you will brick the phone.

With 5.1 (and beyond, if it ever comes) you have to unlock the bootloader to install any ROM on the Droid Turbo, and on the Droid Turbo unlocking the bootloader costs money. Blame Verizon. The other Quarks have free bootloader unlock from Motorola.
You don't understand how many THOUSAND TIMES we've had this discussion. People even dig up old threads (back in the 4.4.4 era) to ask the question again, as if the answer if going to change. Then they go start a NEW thread to ask the same question.
So i suspect this has been answered as well, but I'm unfamiliar with Android development, but if I unlock via sunshine can Verizon relock it via OTA?

So far they have not. But they always CLOSE the current exploits. So, you do not want to take OTA before you unlock the bootloader! Or you may never be able to do so.
Also, if you unlock the bootloader, usually you are also going to install TWRP recovery (so you can make a backup and have the ability to flash installation zips). At that point any future OTA from Verizon would fail to install because you have significantly changed the "system". That's OK. All OTAs are usually posted here in XDA and many other places, in a format which you can flash manually. You want to do that anyway, to let someone else be the guinea pig tester on just the question you asked.
