After I got my nexus back from HTC for a faulty power button, my nexus has been rooted via a replaced motherboard. Now I have already root my phone and unlocked the bootloader, however when I try to flash the recovery image I get
sending 'recovery' (4074 KB)... OKAY
writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: image update error)
Also I can somehow access recovery, and it looks as it should. However when I try to backup my rom it says "Run 'nandroid-moblie.sh' via adb!" and similar things when I try any other the other options. Could someone please help with this?
How are you trying to flash it? Fastboot is the best foolproof way to do flash the recovery. I have never really seen that error before, what recovery are you trying to flash?
Your nandroid error is most likely because the sdcard thinks it's still mounted, or is mounted. Also, I don't know if this still happens but make sure you only do a backup, not backup +ext if you don't have an ext partition on the sdcard.
he's obviously using fastboot...
Did you make sure recovery.img had the right MD5 hashes as amon_ra posted?
I have check the MD5 checksums, and they match up. Also, i am using fastboot to flash, and I am trying to flash RA-nexus v2.0.0. Are you suggesting that I remount the sd card to get it to flash the recovery image?

I would suggest you try in command line with the adb commands as follows:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
chmod 775 /system/bin/flash_image
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
rm /system/recovery-from-boot.p
reboot recovery
You need flash_image for this, check the wiki for the file...don't forget to put the recovery in the root of the sdcard and rename it to recovery.img for convenience purpose

What do I do with flash_image? Also this device came back stock with frg 83, which I am trying to flash the recovery on. When I type in adb shell, I get "error: device not found" even though I can see it through "fastboot devices".

flash image has to be placed in the root of your sd card as well as the recovery!
As for the adb shell, try enabling USB Debugging in Setting > Applications > Development
Make sure you're rooted too (use SuperOneClick if you're not already)
I can get through that string of commands until
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
rm /system/recovery-from-boot.p
reboot recovery
Then it says "No such file or directory". I have already rooted, and both the flash_image and recovery file have been placed in the root directory of the sd card.
Well, after you did that string of commands, does the problem persist?
Also, do you have at least 400MB free on your SD card?
Well, I can't get
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
rm /system/recovery-from-boot.p
reboot recovery
to work as it responds with "No such file or directory". Even if I go through after the errors, the recovery still gives 'nandroid-moblie.sh' via adb!" and similar messages. Do I need to find a way to put the file install-recovery.sh in my sd card root directory if so, where can I get it? In addition when I try to flash recovery with nexus one superboot I get "(remote: signature verify fail)" even though the MD5 sum matches up.
Yes I have over 5 gbs on the sd card.
rm = remove
The steps you are trying to perform with the 2 rm command is to remove the 2 files that automatically rewrite your recovery.
If you reboot without succeeding in removing these files, the recovery image you just flashed will be written over by the stock recovery...
Since you have rebooted, and are still having the problem, you need to do the whole list of commands again... be careful how you type...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Danger, it seems as I can't remove those two files as I get the error message "rm failed for /system/etc/install-recovery.sh, No such file or directory". Any ways to successfully remove them?
Sounds like the files aren't actually there then, unless you're making a typing error...
Did your recovery update after the last attempt? Did it look different, what is the recovery version that is listed on the recovery screen?

I have been flashing different themed recoveries to see if any data transfers, and the background changes. But as before the actions all say "Run 'nandroid-moblie.sh' via adb!" or something similar.

if the rm doesn't work it's fine.
But what about your flashing command? It simply works or outputs an error too?
When u flashed themed ones, did the background change?
The background did change when I flashed the themed ones, however it still outputs errors like "Run 'nandroid-moblie.sh' via adb!" when i try to run any of the options under recovery. The fastboot flashing command gives this "writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: image update error)" error.

When you try running a NAND backup or restore a previous NAND?
When restoring, the backup must be at the exact position where it was when you did it: /sdcard/nandroid/HT#####/BCD######
I was trying to backup my current image, and this happens with all other actions even the shut down action on the recovery page just with "Run 'reboot -p' via adb!"
lawl xD that seems useful...
well, that's extremely odd to be honest...uhm...I think you should try and contact amon_ra if possible...He knows the code of his recovery and might know what's wrong...
I really have no clue, sorry =\
PS: Have u tried clockworkmod recovery?
Alright I will try contacting amon_ra, and I will try clockwork tomorrow. I was going for amon_ra recovery to get Sense HD on it with sd partition. Thanks for the help though I learned more stuff about my phone.
EDIT: Wow, clockwork installed like a charm, and I didn't even have to do anything. I'm now a clockwork convert.
I used z4root's temporary root and enabled RyanZA's OCLF but the phone never booted again (stuck at Galaxy S logo, after my carrier's logo.)
"adb logcat" shows that pretty much everything in /data is missing.
I can't get root to investigate much further. I installed update.zip from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754
which gave me su and busybox, but su just reports "Permission denied" and logcat shows
E/su ( 3315): stat failed with 20: Not a directory
W/su ( 3315): request rejected (2000->0 /system/bin/sh)
(in recovery mode, the stat fails with 2: No such file or directory instead). "su -s /system/xbin/busybox" fails in the same way.
I have /system/app/Superuser.apk, but given that nothing is really running due to the state of /data I don't think that helps. I can't see what's in /data due to not having root though.
any suggestions?
ok I have unfucked the phone. I couldn't get RageAgainstTheCage to run (never got a root shell), but the newer KillingInTheNameOf worked.
In /data I found that the lag fix had renamed data, system, app, app-private, dalvik-cache with .old suffixes. The ext2 volume was there but nothing was mounting it on boot. The directories had been replaced with files just containing the text "stump".
For now I nuked the files, renamed the .old directories back to what they should've been, and the phone is working again. (Still no lagfix though.)
hi all,
I was running my TX with advanced kernel v4, rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922925
yesterday i installed Miui Security from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663222
Then the root is gone. I checked that /system/bin/su and /system/xbin/su are still there but they are inter-linking with symbolic link when i view them with root explorer.
fixes tried:
When i use ADB push trying to replace them, it said "too many symbolic links encountered"
I cannot remove both file as i cannot su in ADB shell.
I booted into CWM recovery but ADB is not enabled in CWM.
I reflashed the flashable zip in CWM to gain root access with no error message prompted, but after reboot into system the SU files are still the same
I reflashed the kernel with flashtools and fastboot, still no change applied to the phone.
Any idea?
finally got it fixed...
I rewrite the updater-script in the CWM flashable zip for root package to force remove both /system/bin/su and /system/xbin/su and rewrite them back.
Thanks for watching...
I've the same problem
Hi guys,
I've the same problem.
I've flashed my Xperia T with MIUI-3.11.22 rom.
I've activated the root permission on Security tab, but my phone doesn't give me the root access (I've tried to install adbd insecure and BusyBox but the result is "problem with root access".
Some ideas?
Thx

what have I overlooked ?
i had planned to root it, install CWM recovery and make backup of the Optus carrier rom, then instal custom rom.... maybe i should download australian rom from sammobile and flash that replacing the current optus carrier one.
also when i load into the default android system recovery (Pwr + home key), down the bottom there is a message in yellow saying...

If your phone is unlocked try to flash a fresh stock rom via Odin, maybe you don't have enought free space in your system patition
cheers i'll try that. freeing up some space.
also i dont know if it is locked to Optus (the carrier) or not, does it matter if it is ?
if so i might have to look into that....

hmmm... well aparently it IS locked to the carrier Optus network. - i dont kno how/if that effects it being rooted or not.
i tried to root the device with the gb_universal_v25.zip again, and then without rebooting installing CWM 5.0.26.
the CWM is there now. but still no root.

OK, just had a terrible time with this, but i may have got it now..... (have tried to do as much research myself, so i dont be a noob and ask every noob question under the sun)
i ended up getting the crappers with it, so in the menu settings i did a factory reset.
and... got stuck in a boot loop.....
rebooted into recovery.. wiped data/factory reset, wiped cache, wiped davlik aswell.
rebooted, and still boot loop.
put Ace into download mode (Pwr +vol dwn + home), ran Odin multidownloader 4.38 and used proper firmware (one package) from sammobile and coopers_v1.0.ops, and reflashed stock FW onto the Ace.
successfully passed Odin, rebooted.. (cant remember if it worked right away or if i had to do another wipe session).... but got it working again...
went back into recovery (reverted back to stock now)... tried rooting with universal_gb_root_v25... didnt work... unrooted with universal_gb_unroot_v9.
tried for ages to find universal_gb_root_v26 but couldnt find a site that didnt want me to do a survey and give my mobile number... so i found (somewhere) a universal_gb_root_v25b.
rooted with that.... rebooted.. and checked with 3 different SU / root checkers... and each one says Root is Good ! Yay !
so now i'm going to go back and put on ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.6 and then try some custom roms
still undecided which one to use. (ideally looking for one, lean, fast and stable considering how restricted the Ace is)
cheers for all your help.

Samsung Galaxy Ace [GT-S5830] root method (Optus branded units and possibly others)
I tried many methods, and none would work with my Optus branded S5830. I assume it was partly due to having less than 1MB available on the /system partition. After some perseverance, it now has root, here was my method, hopefully it can help others.
Some files mentioned in this are available here: http://goo.gl/6XlwEx
1. Install Samsung USB drivers: SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe
2. Install and setup (for atleast your android version) the SDK from Google (http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html)
3. Ensure that the platform-tools (or which ever folder contains adb.exe) is in your system path variable (google it).
4. Put custom recovery image on sdcard: recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace.zip
5. Turn off device, and boot to recovery (home + power)
6. Flash recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace.zip and reboot
7. Turn off device, and boot to recovery again (home + power)
8. From a command prompt, run 'adb shell' it should drop you to a shell with root privileges (#).
Code:
> adb shell
#
9. Mount the '/system' partition from the custom recovery (mount partitions)
10. Make some room on your '/system' partition, delete Skype, Think Office, etc. You will need to do this as the bloatware has left no room for the su binary and SuperUser.apk
11. To get rid of skype or Think Office, from the command line type the following and then press enter.
Code:
# rm /system/app/Skype.apk
# rm /system/app/thinkdroid.apk
12. Extract universal_gb_root_v25.zip to a folder, and open another command prompt at .\universal_gb_root_v25\system\xbin and type the following commands:
Code:
> adb push busybox /system/xbin/
> adb push sqlite3 /system/xbin/
> adb push ssh /system/xbin/
> adb push su /system/xbin/
> adb push ..\app\Rootvalidator.apk /system/app/
> adb push ..\app\Supersu.apk /system/app/
13. Go Back to you 'adb shell' command prompt, and type the following to confirm the files have been pushed (you should not get a 'No such file or directory' message)
Code:
# ls /system/xbin/su
# ls /system/app/Supersu.apk
14. Set file access permissions (change mode) with the chmod command
Code:
# cd /system/xbin
# chmod 6755 su
# chmod 755 busybox
# chmod 755 sqlite3
# chmod 755 ssh
# chmod 644 /system/app/Supersu.apk
15. Now also copy the files you pushed to /system/xbin to /system/bin
Code:
# cp su /system/bin/
# cp ssh /system/bin/
# cp busybox /system/bin/
# cp sqlite3 /system/bin/
Code:
# reboot
The phone should reboot as normal,
17. Once in turn on USB debugging (google it). Go Back to you 'adb shell' command prompt (which will have quit the shell after the reboot) and type:
Code:
> adb shell
$
18. Note that this time there is likely a $ prompt, if so, enter the command 'su' and hit enter. SuperSU should pop up on your device asking for su rights, say yes. If you get the # prompt, you are now rooted.
Code:
$ su
#
19. As an alternative to steps 17 and 18, (after the reboot, before turning on USB debugging), you can just open Rootvalidator from your app drawer to test for root privileges. You will also notice the SuperSU and cwm_recovery apps now in the app drawer too.
If it hasn't worked, make sure you've followed the steps correctly, you can safely repeat them, or play with the file's (busybox, sqlite3, ssh and su) user owner/group owners so they match most of the the other files in '/system/bin' and see if it helps. USe 'ls -l', 'chown' and 'chgrp' (again, google their usage)
ie. as an example, below shows that 'busybox' is owned by user 'root' and group 'shell', to change the group ownership to root, i would type 'chgrp root busybox' at a root (#) prompt.
Code:
# ls -l
-rwxr-xr-x root shell 2007456 2008-08-01 22:00 busybox
-rwsr-sr-x root root 311872 2013-12-08 09:09 su
- The End -
I think you should you should flash a stock rom via odin.
I have been trying for hours to install a custom recovery in my AT&T Atrix HD (mb886) phone. Every time I go through the flashing process, no matter what recovery I try, and whether I use the stock SDK fastboot or one of alternatives, when I try to boot into recovery, I get an ominous error message about how my bootloader is unlocked, and Motorola and ATT will not honor the warranty, and so on. However - it then always boots into the normal startup. I did try holding down both volume buttons when I cycled the power button, and I briefly (about 5 seconds, maybe?) got what looked like a text-based recovery menu, but then the error message popped up again, and I'm back to ????? is going on.
Any help? I have read a number of article/forums online, but all assume that your recovery is working so you can install a custom ROM. I have done this on a couple of Android tablets in the past, so I know I'm not totally stupid, but I can't seem to get past the AT&T nanny.
How can I fix this?
Android 4.1.1
System 98.4.20.MB886.ATT.en.US
If I remember correctly, I had to rename install-recovery.sh (or something like that) by adding .bak to the end of the filename. Boot into fastboot, flash your recovery, and try to boot into recovery.

That warning you see is just the boot logo and can be gotten rid of by flashing a custom logo. Stock Moto boot logos on this platform have two images -- one for locked and another for unlocked bootloaders. It's a non issue and just confirms that the bootloader is unlocked.
You accessed that menu by powering up and holding both volumes and power. Volume down scrolls and volume up selects in there.
To install a custom recovery, boot into fastboot mode and flash it with fastboot. Mythtools, maybe BootMyHD, can do that for you if you don't have moto-fastboot binary or are unable to run "moto-fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" with your phone plugged into a rear usb port in fastboot mode with a terminal/command prompt open to the directory with the recovery image.
More questions
audit13, how do I access that file to change the name? I tried again this morning, and after doing the boot to recovery key sequence, I got a menu, and before it went away, I selected boot to recovery, but got the dead android icon. I tried several other options and it just did a normal boot. Still stumped.
skeevydude, I have tried installing a couple of custom recoveries, using fastboot, and when I do, I get a message saying all went well, but when I boot up, it either does the "failed Android" or just boots up normally. I'll try Mythtools and BootMyHD, but it seems that there is something else going on here.

Maybe something else going on. Are you flashing using the rear usb port of your PC? It really does matter.
To answer the first question about install-recovery, once you're rooted, use Root Explorer or something similar, mount /system as read/write, go to /system/etc, rename the file install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.bak, and reboot.
If you have adb installed on your PC you can do
adb root
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /system
adb shell cp /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak
adb shell rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
adb reboot
I'll try it and see what happens

Well, I tried front and back USB ports, in all cases, adb says "adb can't run as root in production builds". adb sees the phone, but about all I can do is start fastboot, but once there adb doesn't work until I reboot.
I tried running the remount command, but got a message, "Operation not permitted" I'm assuming because I could not root into the phone. Titanium backup shows that the phone is, indeed, rooted.
Stuck again...
Install Root Explorer, find the file, add .bak to the end, reboot to fastboot, install Philz, boot into recovery.

I tried that, got a "Rename failed". It appears that the file is set to read-only, and the Root Explorer doesn't seem to have a way to change that. I'm open to additional suggestions. I had thought that root access would allow me to do things like change file permissions, but I cannot do this with Root Explorer. Everything I try, I get a message that it can't be done, because the file system is read-only.
At the top of the file list, it says "mounted as r/o, but nothing shows to change that, although I see num, erous web posts that claim that there should be a "R/W" button somewhere.
Better luck

OK, I dropped Root Explorer and loaded ES File Explorer. ES Explorer allowed me to change the file R/W permissions and rename the stock recovery file.
adb would still not allow me to get to root, so I loaded adbd insecure from the Play store, and that gave me root access. I flashed the CWR 6.0.4.4, and so far (fingers crossed) I was able to boot to CWM and I'm backing up my system now. Hopefully, the next update will be to say that I have a new ROM installed...

OK, I dropped Root Explorer and loaded ES File Explorer. ES Explorer allowed me to change the file R/W permissions and rename the stock recovery file.
adb would still not allow me to get to root, so I loaded adbd insecure from the Play store, and that gave me root access. All you need to gain r/w access is to click on the ro button to change it to read/write.

Audit13 I'm not sure what you mean here. Root Explorer never indicated a "R/O" button or any other way to change permissions, it just kept saying that the file system was write-protected. ES File Explorer was very easily able to change this and allow me to remove the automatic recovery overwrite.
So, at this point, I have Cyanogen 10.2 running on my Atrix HD, and although I have found a few glitches, it is faster and it is now MINE!

In Root Explorer, You'll see the words "Mounted as r/o". To the right will be a button that says "Mount R/W".
I went with Validus 5.1 over 10.2.
