Where to go from here? Note 5, etc - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Like many of you, I am eligible for upgrade now. And like many of you, I am frustrated by the eternally locked bootloader. So where do you all plan to go from here? I've looked at the Note 5 and S6 Edge+. I have the Note tablet with stylus so I don't really need it in a phone. The Nexus 6p looks great except needs payment upfront. Also, it seems like AT&T Next plan isn't such a great deal. I have Project Fi but I'm not sure on that either. Seems no obvious great option. What do you all think

The Note 5 is just sexy if you can get it in platinum or gold. I am unrooted and enjoying Samsung Pay quite a bit. There are a lot of promotions going on right now with the Note 5/S6+ and Samsung pay if that helps any

New Nexus - Impressed

So I was able to get a used Nexus 4 cheap and in perfect condition SO I decided to sell my Galaxy S4. Decided at this point in time I could pocket the extra $$$ and over the last 3 months of using the S4 I had turned off ALL the special features so questioned why do I have this very expensive phone?? Probably should've kept my Note2 (another story).
I am so impressed with the N4 I just had to drop a note on the forum. Yea there is differences and I am aware of the faults/complaints many comment about on XDA but they really don't bother me and 4.3 is running pretty smooth. My experience with my new Nexus 7 tablet impressed me enough to start looking into the N4.
Wished last spring when I decided to dump my Note2 that I would've gone straight to the Nexus4...and save me some hassle (tried S3, HTC One, then my S4). Actually I had ordered a Nexus4 in the spring but cancelled it based on some comments in various forums...oh well.
Now if I can use some restraint I plan on keeping this Nexus 4 at least till Spring!!

I too have a similar experience. I broke my Galaxy S4, and decided I could save some money while getting an unlocked, fully unlockable bootloader, and Nexus phone. I got one straight from Google, (16 GB) unlocked the bootloader, and installed Cyanogenmod 10.1 stable and Franco kernel. I am loving this device so far.
Maybe use some of that saved money towards the Ubuntu edge indiegogo campaign

Touchwiz update for note 3 possible?

Do you think samsung will update touchwiz on the note 3 to be the same as on the gs5, or will they keep it exclusive to the gs5 and later to make you buy the new phone?
I've seen kitkat on the international version and it wasn't even a noticeable difference visuslly, so I'm hoping samsung will push an aesthetic update to touchwiz.

If they think that making it exclusive to the S5 only to make anyone buy that phone, they are ridiculously stupid.
90% of current Samsung owners look at the S5 and laugh at how mediocre it actually is compared to older devices. They really didn't upgrade much and what is upgraded in miniscule at best. Not worth dropping the S4 or the Note 3 to get it.
Another thing is that TW sucks the fattest of asses. Most people would agree with me on that. The only class of devices it is good on is the Note series of phones and Tablets simply because of the S-Pen and it's features.
So... If they update it any time soon, it would be nice/won't matter for us on the Note series of devices. Any other device will probably fall under the don't matter/don't care side.

Oh yeah I definitely agree that I don't think it's a legit reason to upgrade. I have no intention of even considering it I would have just liked the visual overhaul of the settings app and the quick settings (I like color is the only reason). Also I like flip board so having an easier to access extra home screen for the magazine would have been better than swiping up and waiting for it to load. I will probably just use the regular flip board app though.

Oh I meant to add in that I see samsung being dumb enough to think making the new touchwiz exclusive is enough to make people upgrade. Take for example a heartbeat monitor thing... I run with my phone and I don't think this is something I need. But oh man its the next big thing!

[Q] Is the S5 worth it? I need your opinion!

I have a Tmobile Galaxy Note 3 unlocked which I use with AT&T.
I am debating on trading for an AT&T Galaxy S5 16 GB.
the question is.. is it worth it to do straight up swap for 16gb S5 since my Note 3 has twice the memory and more power.
Please let me know what you guys think!
Most definitely, I had the s3 with latest rom & I have to say this s5 kills it in battery life, speed, smoothness. Plus the camera is phenomenal. This is probably the best phone out currently. Plus we got root, the easiest ever and recovery. I have already debloated and installed V4A, PLUS most all my favorite apps.

If I were given the chance to go back in time and remake my upgrade decision, I wouldn't have gone with the S5. I didn't do my research about the bootloader and knox, which I had no problem with on my S3, and I am now considering trading my sister for her Nexus 5.
If it had unlocked bootloader I still wouldn't go with it. I feel like Samsung is slowly turning into Apple. Giving you outdated tech and saying it's new. Why didn't they put a better processor in the phone? Why didn't they put 3GB of ram in the phone. Why only 16GB of internal space? Why so when and if they push the Galaxy S5 prime/ Galaxy F they can give you what they should of in the first place? I'm on a rooted LG G3 and I love it. Glad I picked this phone.

I seriously doubt you'll actually need 3gb of ram. I understand that samsung decision to not include it when the tech is there is stupid but nonetheless, anything above the current flagship standard is frivolous (unless we suddenly reach the next generation of mobile apps and gaming). That being said, just the water resistance and battery alone is totally worth an upgrade. I've never had a phone that even comes close to the s5's battery and I've had them all from older galaxies to blackberries to iphones

Looking at the specs on Phonescoop, the note has a bigger screen and more memory, a little slower processor, not as good a camera. If camera is super important to you, you might want to switch. I'd guess the processor speed difference isn't noticeable to most. Think about it in depth before you switch. Also although the camera is better, there is still not more than 4x zoom. I love my s5 but this sounds like a really close call for you.

I had the note 3 and sold it.went back to the s4 for a bit and now the s5. I think you shouldn't have any regrets after switching. Phone is tough http://bgr.com/2014/04/02/galaxy-s5-drop-test-video/
I would go with the S 5 Active or the HTC (M8). At least with the M8 you can unlock your bootloader and get root.
All we have for the S 5 is root and safestrap (Which is awesome) Thats all you should have for the Note 3 right?
Dont get me wrong, you will be happy with the S 5 but a lot of people are extremely happy with the HTC M8.
HTC actually had an 30% sales increase since this phone and business is looking good for them!!!
Samsung is going the wrong way in my mind. They want more corporate peeps.....
PS: I had the Note 3 before this S 5 and I like the S 5 better.

[Q] Nexus 6 or Note 4 if...?

Nexus 6 is $749.99 and Note 4 is $799.99 (I live in Canada so prices are different)
$50 dollars is not that much, and i'd gladly pay a little more for a better phone, if the Note 4 is better, if not than i'll just save $50 and get the Nexus 6.
Help me please! Thanks
i had both i like pure android dont with all the add ons from samsung but both devices are nice imo note 4 seems to take a better picture
What is the price difference between the Nexus 6 and Note 4 in the US? If it is like, over $100 then I might just get the Note 4 because of the better Canadian deal
note 4 $720
nexus $648
thats from sprint i dont know what you have

Thanks, not much of a difference in the Note 4 and Nexus 6 gap for us Canadians, only about $20 dollars so that probably won't change what phone I want.
wait for s6 or other upcoming phones
I've decided to get the Nexus 6 because I already have the Note 3 and the Note 4 really isn't that much of an upgrade for me, and I like to change things up a bit after using Touchwiz for a couple of years i've decided to try out the pure Android experience
yea i had note 3 then went to note 4 didnt see much upgrade so got nexus 6 i love it also a lot more development
Believe it or not I actually liked TW. Except for the lag that it has. Loved the camera. But now with 5.0 I really like stock android. Between the two phones I would hands down get the nexus 6 again. Rootable, unlockable boot loader seals the deal for me.

There is no "better" phone. Different strokes for different folks as they say. Get your hands on one of each if you can, and see which you like better.
I could afford both but I didnt want the note 4 for the following reasons.
1) Samsung - Not a fan of how they handled warranty on the S3
2) Touchwiz -although better now, still a resource hog
3) Samsung - Closed Source for many HAL's etc, making AOSP very difficult and buggy
4) S-Pen - although pretty cool, paying for something I wont use much...
5) Although technically better screen, wanted slightly bigger.

That's the same reason I picked the Nexus 6. Coming from the Note 2 and 3 I was ready for a change and the Note 4 was more of the same.
There is already a large discussion thread on this topic. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/note-4-vs-nexus-6-t2906800
Please continue discussion there. Thanks!

I just paid off my Verizon Note 8

Usually I'd get the next Samsung Note as soon as I paid off my current one. But this time, I'm not sure if I want to just right back into an extra $40 or $50 on my verizon bill. I really like the earbud jack and actually, the Note 8 still works great. I'm not even ready to have to battery replaced yet.
But I sure am tempted by the new S Pen. Has anyone upgraded to the Note 9 or 10 and decided they were happier with the Note 8? (maybe this is the wrong forum now...)
You might want to ask on one of those devices forums, but I'm on the same boat as you... I know there's a substancial upgrade on the hardware and some functionality, but my note 8 is running just fine, no complaints whatsoever... I don't use it for gaming or anything, so I can't really justify spending the extra cash... I think I'll use it until I break it or until there's a device it there that I really want...

Got a screen replacement under warranty, which also included a new battery. I think I'm good for a while.
