Please see the attached photo. That is the web page on my wireless router, and I have circled the host name for my Note 5 connected on WiFi via 5g. I have noticed iPhones that connect, default to the below string as their device hostname:
"<Owner's First Name>-iPhone"
On a PC or a Mac I can specify the hostname as well... but how do I specify the hostname for my Note 5, rather than leaving it as some random sequence of characters (not sure where those characters came from)...?

looks like you might be using FiOS. if yes, after logging in , click the My Network icon (first red arrow in picture), scroll down to the find your device (Click Show More if necessary), click the link to Rename This Device (second/lower red arrow in the picture) and on the next screen enter your device's new name. it's always nice to know the devices connected to your network. in my home there are 40 devices connected to my FiOS router (some via wireless ac bridge configurations).hope this works for you.

Thank you Cortez.i. I will do that - but the default originally comes from the device I assume - how would I change the default on my phone?

Did a search and didn't see a thread on this. Is is possible to set up an ad hoc wifi connection with my 8125 and my laptop then surf the web from the laptop using the phone as a modem? If so, how would I set it up? Thanks in advance...
Configure Cingular 8125 as a dial up modem
Found this on Howard's Forum
"Driver Installation
1) Insert the CD that came with the phone into your drive. Close the window that opens up.
2) Open up Activesync and go to File - Connection Settings. Remove the check from the box next to "allow USB connections"
3) Connect your Cingular 8125 to your Computer via USB
4) On the 8125 go to Start - Programs - Modem Link
5) In Modem Link choose USB under Connection and wap.cingular under Access Point Name.
6) Choose "activate" in modem link
7) Your computer should recognize the device and an "add new hardware" wizard should appear.
8) Choose "No, not this time" and click next
9) Choose "Install from a list or specific location [Advanced]" and click next
10) Choose "Search for the best driver in these locations"
11) Check the box next to "Include this location in the search"
12) Browse to the Following location [CD Drive]:\OEM\APPS\Drivers\USB Modem
13) Click Next
14) A dialog box will pop up, click Continue Anyway
15) Click Finish to complete the driver installation
Connection setup
1) Go to Start - Control Panel - Network Connections
2) Choose "Create a new Connection"
3) Click Next
4) Choose "Connect to the Internet" and click Next
5) Choose "Set up my connection manually" and click Next
6) Choose "Connect using a dial-up modem" and click next
7) Choose any name you want for ISP Name and click Next
8) Type *99# in the Phone number field and click Next
9) User Name: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1
Confirm password: CINGULAR1
Note: the username and password need to be all in caps
10) Click Next
11) Click Finish
That's it, you should have a connection that will dial up to Cingular's GPRS network. If you have Edge service in your area you will get Edge speeds."
The windows mobile software doesn't have the ability to be a host for a ad hoc, i looked into it. The way i do it is using bluetooth, I run linux and have bluetooth on my laptop and connect to my phone that way. It works well, just slow.
Well darn. I was hoping to be able to set up a wireless connection using wifi, but guess not. Thanks Ozoner for the tips on using the usb. I'll just have to haul the usb cable around I guess.

I have played around with this, but could never get it work. Any advice on how to configure?
OK, this method was tried with a WVC54GC v1.1 with firmware V1.21.
We will have to see if video stream is same for earlier versions!!
Have TCPMP installed. (latest version)
Connect your WVC54GC cam to your network with open view access in setup (that is NO PASSWORDS) for basic view, not tried peer to peer yet cause its late and kn..tired).
Make a WiFi connection from your phone to the same network.
Open TCPMP, select 'File' 'Open file' and type into the top field http://the.cam.ip.add/img/video.asf where 'the.cam.ip.add' is the network address of the camera (of course )
I saved my links in a directory called Cam Links (as 'whatever.cam instaed of .txt) using Activesync then used Resco explorer to link them to a TCPMP ( IE open these with!!) upload for automatic viewing!
Hope it works but expecting lots of queries...
OH BTW, there is about a 10 second delay on my setup but HEY, who cares cause the vid quality is great?
One other thing...
Make sure you hit the pause button before you shut down TCPMP as it tries to open the camera on next load.
OK, here is a method to connect it peer-to-peer (direct connect with no hub)
Get it up and working as in the first method.
Change your camera wireless settings (New SSID, fixed IP (Ex 192.168.1.115 subnet 255.255.255.0) and Ad-Hoc (peer to peer).
You will have to also edit the security settings for wireless as this camera can only use WEP in Ad hoc.
Select 128bit encryption and enter a 5 character passphrase, hit generate and make a note of this long hex string and select shared key.
On your phone, go to 'Settings' 'Connections' 'WiFi' and on the Network adapters tab, select WiFi and set for 'Use specific IP address and enter something close to your camera (Ex 192.168.1.110 subnet 255.255.255.0) click OK, then under the Wireless Tab 'Networks to access' select 'Only computer to computer' you should then see your camera.
Click connect and enter the hex string you made a note of from the camera encryption, be sure to select 'Shared' and it should connect.
Follow the instructions for TCPMP as in first post and you should have a fully portable WiFi camera (apart from the mains adapter!) to take around with you.
If you need to go back to Standard WiFi use, you only have to re-select 'All available' under Networks to use and under Network adapters re-select 'Use server assigned IP'
Enjoy.
This method should work for all Linksys cameras and just about any camera if you can identify the jpeg or mjpeg video output stream (ie. http://the.cam.ip.add/img/video.asf in first post)
Anyone tried this yet?
it works for me
It work for me. i use orb too.
I've enhanced my Webserver sample to support reading from the device (where allowed), as well as reading/writing IsolatedStorage
The XAP is located in the Webserver project.
To access the webserver, open the app on your phone (it will disable the idle timer and run behind the lock screen--but WiFi will turn off, so you'll want to be connected via USB or don't let it sleep)
//phone_ip/IsolatedStorage
//phone_ip/Windows
IsolatedStorage is a special case (virtual directory that uses the SDK IsolatedStore APIs), the filesystem is mounted at the root of the webserver. Note that if you navigate to //phone_ip/, you will not see anything, as we are not able to list the contents of the root directory.
I am working to create a real socket library that mimics System.Net/.Sockets, and System.IO for file access. TcpClient and TcpListener are in a mostly functional state already.
Most of the socket and I/O code came from jmorrill. I have pulled code from mono to mimic System.Net.
Perhaps I'll spend some time on the web UI next, maybe a fancy Silverlight uploader. There doesn't seem to be a ton of interest though, so we'll see.
Update ("v2"):
- Authentication
- UI
- Adapter list
- More reliable
nice.. will try it out.
Very nice! Thanks!!
I've updated the sample to one with a UI, Authentication and more reliability.
Looking at your code WP7 looks more and more like a normal windows CE with a secured UI.
Yeah, I think someone with a strong WM background could port code to [native, homebrew] WP7 pretty quickly. Pretty much everything works just fine.... I just wish we could add the System.Net .NET CF assemblies back to the GAC. :/

Noob questions: It says "connect to your wifi address below". How? Also, connect the phone or the pc? And navigate via IE mobile?
As I said, noob questions. Thanks for any help.
start ie and type in http://wifi address
I have found on alternateboot.reg
HTML:
; Disable MTPz USB function driver
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\FunctionDrivers\CompositeFN]
"ClientDriverList"=multi_sz:"Serial_Class"
What is MTPz USB function driver?

I think (might be misreading your question), you'll need to plug your device in to USB (or be prepared to loose the connection), then on your desktop, go to one of the IPs listed (in IE or any other browser).
On the screenshot shown, WiFi is the last one, with "BCMSDDHD1" attached to the label, thought the device name may be different for you. Try one that has "192.168.1." as that'll be the most likely option.

I don't know what the default password is, but if you type admin/admin in on the device for user/pass that works fine.
EDIT:
Code:
// In order to secure the device, the default password is a random number, not a static default
So you'll need to change it, unless you can read minds

Ba-da-bing! We are in business.
this works great! does this work just over USB? I assumed that since I didnt see an SSID advertised that the webserver wasn't broadcasting over WiFi.
A few feature suggestions:
* Make it clearer in the device UI to use the last IP address. I had assumed I would use the SERIAL ON USB IP address
* When browsing files, show a detail view so that you can see date/time modfied, type (optional), size
* when in a subdirectory add an Up ellipsis (...) to more easily walk back up the directory tree.
* be able to filter a directory listing so that you can display just certain file types (ie *.exe)
* Be able to download files
I love it! Its handy to be able to get a file listing that you can copy so that you can capture file listings.
Scratch the suggestion to add downloading files, the filenames are of course URLs which enable http downloads
I found a bug. When you click on a file to download it the href seems to have an issue since the file extension is stripped. You can easily add it during the save but it would be easier to have that done by default. I need to check the syntax but for example for filebrowser.exe the html is:
FileBrowser.exe<br />
This was handy so that it was possible to download an EXE and see what certificate is used for signing.
It looks like if you press Back or Start the webserver shuts down or is tombstoned.
I wonder if anyone has come up with a way to keep an application from being killed.
If that was possible then the webserver could provide active control. In that case if it was running in the background a great feature to add would be a screen capture function.
Gi guys. Im thinking about update my x8 to miui but to have working wifi on this rom u have to do static ip.
Can someone tell me how to do it ?

Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Wi-Fi settings
Press the menu key -> "Advanced"
Tick "Static IP" and fill out the required info
I have no idea about how often this question was already answered.

Since neither me nor anyone else knows about the network configuration of the network you want to connect to, I don't think we're able to tell you what you should put into the various fields.
The one to work out, or know, that stuff is YOU.
If You're using Windows - run cmd.exe and type there ipconfig/all. And this will answer Your question

I can help you. You need to connect your computer or laptop first with the wifi network. Then open the wifi adapter property from PC(pic 1). Click on Details button as in picture 1. The details window copy the details marked in yellow rectangle(pic 2).
Just follow all values exactly same except he IPv4 address. Use the IPv4 address in your phones IP address box but change the last digits after dot.
If you are getting confused please send me the screen shots of your windows as mine.

dipusen, you forgot to mention that this will most likely work without troubles in a home network but shouldn't be tried in a School (WiFi) network, or any other public WiFi, as chances are (by incrementing the last octet of the IP) that this could trigger a duplicate IP in the network if the $currentIP 1++ is already assigned to another device by DHCP.

Good point, you are right.
hi, Enable Ad Hoc for Jellybean ((without router)) with Infrastructure Wi-Fi windows 7
follow the youube steps
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klHzMyYFGeQ
cmd run as admin ,
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=testwifi key="123456789012"
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
netsh wlan show hostednetwork
But can Nexus actualy see Ad-Hoc networks? I remeber having a problem finding iPhone 3GS Ad-Hoc tethered network on my previous android devices, I had to use hacked wpa-supplicant to enable support for this and it never worked stable enough.
this work for all android ,ios ,this dont need to hack wpa_supplicant ,it will work like router , stable but it need windows 7 , with wifi card built in that support virtual miniport

Still need hacked wpa-supplicant to CREATE ad hoc networks on the Android device.
OP is showing how to create wireless network from the Win7 machine, for the Android to connect to.
This is a new feature in Windows 7 and differs from the normal adhoc networks. It shows on any Android device without problem. The video shows quiet good how you can set it up.
However, you might have to enable "Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" first, and set it to Automatic start. This is done in Computer Management -> Services and Applications -> Services. The Service may have a different (translated) name if your using Windows 7 in another language.
Also I would add keyUsage=persistent to the command line setting up your network.
And finally, since the Network has to be started again if you have restarted your PC or have woken it up from hibernation, a little tip:
- create a folder (doesn't really matter where, I just put it in C), name it, say, "Wifi" or "SoftAP" or whatever you like.
- Create two text documents in there, start.txt and stop.txt. (or on.txt and off.txt, again, doesn't matter)
- type netsh wlan start hostednetwork into start.txt and save
- type netsh wlan stop hostednetwork into stop.txt and save
- change both file's extension to .bat
- right click on taskbar -> Toolbars -> New Toolbar
- browse to the folder created earlier
You now have an on/off switch for your Soft-Access-Point on your taskbar!
You can also add start.bat to the list of services run at system start if you want to.
Been trying to get this to work and now its working. Thanks a lot
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Just what I needed.
Works perfectly on my Nexus 4.
