The long and short -- I now find my Nexus 6 in a boot loop. The device is rooted and I was able to get a TWRP backup made and transferred to my computer.
I need to be able to restore the text messages data -- how do I do that from the TWRP backup?
I have my S6 edge that I'm using now --- and don't want to reload the N6 until I understand the best way to proceed.
Thanks for the help.

Can you get into bootloader mode? Flash TWRP, recover the image? I've just tried a TWRP image in Winrar - no luck, so I guess it's some sort of proprietary format.
You'd need to restore that backup, then use a program like SMS Backup & Restore to backup your text messages. I use this to backup the XML files to a folder on my Google Drive, so I can restore these to my phone (or another phone) as needed.

Yeah -- I thought about that -- but the problem is -- if I restore the backup, then the problem (and I do know what I did) that put me into the boot loop will return as well.
I am hoping there is a way to just restore the text data portion -- or extract it, etc.

As I stated above -- getting into boot loader is no problem / recovery as well. I made the TWRP backup after I started the boot loop. I am hoping there is a way to just restore the text data from the backup -- because if I restore the entire backup, then I'll just be back into the boot loop.

Not that I know of, those files are entire backups of /system, /data, so this guy shows you how to extract /system and /data from TWRP backups: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKqYUPx4VrY
From there you'd have to figure out where the text file/db would be for SMS.
EDIT: Once you do that, this post should help you know what you are looking for.

i thought you could rename the folder of each nandroid backup, but after searching i read that now they might not restore anymore. is this true? i havent tried to restore any of them.
i used the time stamp of each folder to rename them based on the order of first to last because i didnt pay attention that the folder name was actually the date. so i dont know if i named them correctly, i.e. stock rom, cyan #1, etc.
are my restore files now trashed? also i havent done a restore yet cause i wasnt sure how much re-installing i would have to do. what exactly does nandroid restore, is it just the OS and all settings, but no apps? thanks!
Nandroid is basically an image or 'Snapshot' of your phone i.e. everything from your applications to your settings to the bootloader animation. As for renaming them, I think you need to keep the same folder structure but you can rename the 'BDES-20100430-1259' part to something more user-friendly.

Wait it grabs everything including apps, OS settings, even my desire black notification bar, etc?
I'm totally noob so I wanna do my first restore but don't know what if anything I'll lose and if its worth it to even restore. I'm wondering how feasible it is to bounce around between nanDroid backups and I always hear about titanium backup but don't understand the difference and why to use that or just the recovery. Thanks
I rename my nandroid backup folders on a regular basis, so I can quickly find a backup for any stage of modification I'd like to go back to. ORIGINAL, CYAN-506-BARE, CYAN-506-LOADED, FROYO-BARE, FROYO-LOADED, etc....
And it SHOULD backup everything (well, except for the radio image), and it generally does. I have done a few restores where it misses an app or setting or two but the majority of everything is there.
mine works restoring when renaming folders. i label mine using the rom versions (kang/cyan/etc)
And you don't lose root if you flash back to stock ROM, the one I made right after I first rooted?

If the backup was created while you had root access, then you should still have root access. Those permissions will be copied as a part of the backup.
crap my restore just failed. It said:
Error: run 'nandroid-mobile.sh restore ' via adb
Are my backups lost forever? I tried all of them and all gave that error.
That's beyond me. The only time I've had an issue with nandroid backups was when my SD card was close to full. My troubleshooting skills on that are limited, I'm afraid.
I rename all mine according to ROM/kernel...etc and yes nandroid backsup everything to the "T" the way it was when u aplly the backup. You should always keep more than one nandroid on ur card or save them on ur computer. They are known to sometimes not work. It has happened to me.
Ok I'm really having some problems. I just now created another brand new nand backup and didn't rename itand tried to restore it and get the same error. Google has tons of info on this with a million different answers. I tried removing all spaces in my backup name with no luck.

Since I've been playing with different kernels for Froyo, I now have to include the kernel name in my backups.

Hi guys!
I'm running Doc_Kalpik's V7.5 and I had a bad run in while trying to manually install MiniSquadron which I paid for yet have been getting download unsuccessful errors no matter what I do! But that's another story...
After I installed it, I got a force close...then I got force closes everywhere else so I decided to reboot. And I discover that once I get to the boot animation portion, I get several vibrations (the same as the force close vibration pattern) at this point and eventually the screen turns black while still doing the vibration thing..I press the home button and the backlight keys just light up nothing else. So I go into recovery to attempt to fix.
I decided to reflash the ROM via CWM so I disabled my lagfix first, then did a reboot into recovery. From there I chose to backup and restore and after all that I still run into the same problem at the boot animation.
I try to manually backup via CWM and then factory reset then restore via CWM and there I run into an error saying that no .android_secure blah was not found so it skips the restore of that. I again run into the same probem at boot.
I try to do an advance restore to just restore my data. Still the same error, and the same problem at boot.
I am only able to boot with no issues after a factory reset with no restore meaning all data is lost...So I was wondering is there any way to just restore some parts from the nandroid backup like messages and such...I would assume that the problem is with my apps that had been on sd...which were actually none at all except the manual installation of MiniSquadron I guess. I don't care for the data of the other apps, I just need my messages. I did have a titanium backup but it isn't very recent since I did not expect this problem to occur.
Any help is much appreciated!
I dont have specific information on restoration of messages because I have not yet looked into it - but I was able to recover a few files from a nandroid backup using unyaffs which extracts the content of the nandroid img files. Maybe you can extract the sms file ( /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db) from data.img and push it using adb shell.
In future, I'd suggest SMS backup app from the market - it backs up and restores into your gmail account.
Ohhh! I'll check out the img files later when I get home. I was afraid of looking into them expecting hard to discern, indescript file names I don't know how to make use of. But that file you pointed out seems obvious enough. I hope it's somehow usable without the full backup. Perhaps a simple move with Root Explorer app would work too? I'm not all too familiar with using adb commands...
Yes I have that app but I don't use it often for backup and restore jobs since I tried several times in the past to restore from backup and always seem to be missing more recent messages.
Thanks for the advice though! I'll report success/failure soon.
I don't seem to have anything inside my com.providers.telephony folder when I extracted data.img...Any ideas?
nvm! Found it in dbdata.img... will update this if this works.
Yes - a simple move with Root Explorer should work too.
It doesn't seem to work... No messages show up even after several retries with reboots I tried opening up the file within root explorer since it has sqlite viewer and it gives me an error..I forgot exactly what but it doesn't let me look within the database unlike if I try doing the same with the original mmssms.db file currently on my phone. I tried sqlite viewer on pc and when I attempt to open the file nothing shows up. Any work around to this? Is it possible for even this file to be corrupt in the backup...that's kinda devastating news..any way to repair this?
I need to send in my Touchpad for repair... and since I have Preware and a bunch of homebrew apps I'm hoping not to need to completely reinstall/config all of them.
Is there a way to take a complete backup image of the Touchpad so I can restore it on my replacement?
I've seen mention of something called CWM Backup but after many searches I cannot find a link or any real info.
thx for the help!

AFAIK Clockworkmod works on android partitions and not the WebOS partition.
I don't believe you can clone the entire partition, but rather backup most of the app data.
This should work I believe and if it doesn't, I'm sorry I'm a n00b:
1. Make sure you have your WebOS account attached and open the setting "Backup" and hit "back up now"
2. Use Save/Restore from Preware to back up all the apps data.
3. Copy all your personal files off of the USB drive including the save/restore files.
Again, this it what I believe will work. I don't usually back up my app data so I'm not 100% sure.
I performed a back up of my daily driver rom using Safestrap and then using TiBu I backed up my call logs/sms and etc. I then FXZ'd and updated to the latest OTA. I stupidly forgot to put my TiBu folder onto my SDCard before I FXZ'd, and the FXZ wiped my phone clean..including my TiBu folder. Now I've lost the number of this really cute girl I've been talking to (who I stupidly never saved as a contact!) along with a bunch of important text messages.
I still have the SafeStrap backup..but it's useless now because it's running on GB and I now have JB.
I have found a few apps, including TiBu that enable you to (1 click) automatically extract SMS/Call Logs/Apps and etc off of a CWM or TWRP Nandroid backup, but they don't seem to work for Safestrap backups. The only app that seems to allow me to access Safestrap backups is "Nandroid Browser" by Paradise Android. However, Nandroid Browser has no automated step to extract SMS/Call logs and etc. I don't even know where to start looking for where these are stored.
Does anyone have any ideas? I will be forever indebted to you!
Yes! Ran into a similar problem once upon a time.
You can use Titanium backup! Go into prefs, and you can use "Extract from Nandroid backup" option. Be careful though - I have heard of people running into issues due to cross-compatibility issues, can't recall the thread atm, but if you are restoring data only, rather than a whole app, you should be fine.
The rooting method for JB has already been posted (uber thanx to to Dan and SamuriHL) if you need that.

While I have rooted 6 SM-N910T devices using CF auto root, I have not needed to install TWRP recovey since all 6 run latest 6.0.1 stock ROM with no need for any custom ROM. Noting how restoring a TWRP backup restores everything including contacts, sms messages, wallpaper, apps, and keeps root, I created a full backup and saved to SD card. To my surprise, restoring this full backup reset SM-N910T back to factory losing all personalization including Google accounts, contacts, sms, wallpaper, apps, and losing root.
I twrp installed supersu 2.82 zip and restored root. Then restored same full backup stored on SD card and again reset phone back to factory.
Why is restoring TWRP backup not restoring all personalization including Google accounts, contacts, sms, wallpaper, apps, and keeping root mirroring how it was prior to making TWRP backup?
What steps can I try to restore everything back to just prior making the full TWRP backup?
Appreciate your help and insights...

TWRP backups don't include user data. If you look closely you notice the date partition in TWRP it state "not including used data". If your device has root you can patch TWRP to "including user data" when saving backups.
Good luck, happy to help

@Mr. JAVI, Thanks.
Device had root when backup was created but did not have tipatch. How do I restore sms messages which existed prior to creating TWRP backup ?
I now understand that this tipatch is required on rooted device to grab sms messages as part of backup. However Many TWRP guides state that TWRP backups restore everything. Everything suggests to me it would include sms messages. I have not comes across any that talked about tipatch. This could have been avoided with clearer more transparent guides. Am I misreading this?

This is how it looks on payched TWRP. Check your custom recovery it will differ from the image below. Mine"including" whithout Tipatch, like on your device "excluding".
Sometimes it may be possible to recover wiped data however if it has been writen over with mew data then unless you have the forensics of the FBI. Its gone for good
As for the TWRP site stating otherwise , I do not know. If I guessed, it might be Adoptible and expandable storage of the OS.
I remember years ago trying to better understand TERP advsnced options. II did a search and at the top of the page "Everything you need to know about TWRP". I think the title should have been""

@Mr. JAVI, I appreciate your help. See the quote
TWRP makes “nandroid” backups, which are near-complete images of your system. Instead of using them to restore individual files or apps, you use nandroid backups to restore your phone to exactly the state it was in when you backed up: the version of Android, your wallpaper, your home screen, right down to which text messages you had left unread.

If its any conciliation, I used to think a complete backup was actually "complete". Its unfortunate you were misled.
Maybe this will be of some help. To make a truly complete backup with patched TWRP, I recommend checking all boxes as displayed in the image below. Be aware that the Note 4 in the picture is not rooted and therefore not a patched TWRP. The illustration is merely to display the partitions and check boxes as all marked in blue .
There is an option in custom recovery (TWRP) that provides compression . Its in the setting. The cons= takes longer to backup and longer to restore.
