Battery consumption on school WiFi is unusually high. You'll notice the much steeper curve than when at home earlier in the day (school starts at 8). You can find attached GSam Screenshot, my app drawer and battery stats. Any ideas on how to reduce the consumption?

A few things could be happening here;
1. When you take your phone off charge, usage below around 96% is a steeper curve for Li-Po and Li-Ion batteries, especially in smartphones, so this could be an unusual drain on your battery.
2. When connected to your home WiFi Router, the smartphone has a stable connection to one source. When connected to commercial WiFi, you'll find the device can be connecting to multiple routers as you move around so the phone is constantly renewing the WiFi lease, this will force the CPU to wakelock also which will cause a higher battery usage.
I'd suggest looking around for apps which give you more detailed battery stats, make sure you're charging the device with an approved Samsung product etc. It could even be that WiFi isn't even the issue here so it's worth looking around for apps which give better stats on usage.

It's not a commercial wifi, as far as I know, there's a single AP, as it's not a terribly big facility

The router could have an agressive beacon rate...which just constantly probing your phone for connectivity. nothing you can do.
My fiance and I had similar battery drain issues whenever we connected to 5G routers. The only solution that I could find was to only use 2.4G on my router at home and cellular data when i'm out. Hopefully this issue will get fixed in a future update.

Not actually true.
If you wish root, then my SkyHigh kernel has Synapse options to adjust all this. May or may not work for him, as unsure of the exact cause.
Once you root though, there's no turning back. Warranty void and if you do re-flash full stock firmware after, knox being tripped, won't allow deep sleep.

Wait, does the no deep sleep without Knox apply to older phones? Because I think that my S4's battery degraded after I rooted, unrooted, then upgraded to Lollipop (though the latter part was done by a Samsung rep)*

I'm currently on Continuum v5.6 . I was also having this problem on 5.4 and earlier on cognition.
I don't have any 3G or gprs. Just WiFi.
With WiFi on and connected I get bad battery drain(10% in 90 minutes) even when wifi is not in use and phone is sitting idle as you can see above.
When I turn WiFi off or WiFi on but not connected, I get essentially flat curves with a battery drain of like 1-2% an hour. What gives?
I get fast battery drain just like you, with wifi on at home. My router is D-Link Dir-655. Some people say they get low battery usage with wifi turned on, so I'm beginning to think it's more to do with the router than the phone. I've had the problem from day one. My first phone developed the random shutdown issue and was replaced by AT&T. The second phone is just the same running down the battery fast when wifi is on. I have gotten in the habit of turning wifi off when I'm not using it. It's a pain, but I don't know anything else to do. I'm certainly not going to replace my router just because of it.

I have that same exact router! DIR-655.
I saw another thread in the dlink forums where a guy had that same router and the same issue. Here : hxxp://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=38655.0 (replace xx by tt)
Here as well : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1087278
Though he solved it by removing some HP printer drivers that were polling the LAN constantly.
Most people recommend leaving WiFi sleep policy to never, but I get better battery when leaving it to sleep on screen off. But thats just because wifi turns off about 10 minutes after screen is off so push updates like instant messages/email stop working until the screen is turned on again. (No 3G here)
I have acquired another captivate which is running the stock rom. I'm gonna run some tests on it.
The second captivate also does the same thing.
I can see a constant trickle of data from wifi using the OS Monitor App when not using the wifi and background data is set to off. Its something like 200 bytes every 3 seconds. Accordingy the wireless light on my router also keeps blinking, albeit at a significant slow rate..
Can the timeout for "Turn wifi off when screen off" be reduced to a few seconds instead of minutes??
I have a Zyxel WAP and a SonicWall router/firewall. So its definitely not Dlink only.
I see the same pattern as lurkingdevil.
I lose 5% in 10 mins with wifi on it sucks. It also depends on which apps are running in the background and which ones update like Facebook or email

I feel you..
I have now turned on 3G and it doesnt burn battery like wifi.
In OS Monitor when using 3G there is a static tx/rx value unless I do something that requires data transfer .
On the other hand with wifi on, tx/rx keeps going up even with everything off, some data is always transfering between router and phone...
I think there is some setting in the router that is causing this..
I love the whole android development game but I don't think I'm techsavvy enough to mess with my router, ill stay tuned nonetheless incase some brave soul experiments and gets results
I just switched to continuum 5.6 last night, but was constantly charging while using wi-fi. Ill look into it tonight to see if it affects me in the same way.

Ok so I dived into my router settings.
Good news is that I managed to nearly fix this issue. I have a DIR-655 , D-Link has done a great job by making a firmware emulator here : http://support.dlink.com/Emulators/dir655/133NA/login.html
Login with user : admin pass: admin
From the tabs at top choose ADVANCED --> ADVANCED WIRELESS (left pane)
Now you will see a bunch of things that have some value set to them. Here I changed DTIM from 1 to 200 . After doing this, I set wifi sleep policy to never and kept my phone aside. Checking after an hour and I had lost only 1%.
Bad news is that push notifications have gone flaky, I dont know what exactly the DTIM thing does so I'm still researching it. You can click on the "More.." link on the right pane and there is some info on it.
EDIT: I switched DTIM back to 1 and push is still not working perfectly. Can you guys check this?
Set WiFi sleep policy to never and log in on gtalk from the phone. Then send yourself some messages via another google account and see if you hear the notification sound on the phone when the screen is turned off. You might hear it the first time but try sending a bunch of consecutive messages.
For me, I hear it sometimes, sometimes I don't, but if I turn on the screen right after sending the message(and not hearing the notification) I can see the message in the status bar at the lockscreen.
EDIT 2: During my previous tests, I was logged in from my account on the pc as well as the phone. Notifications seem to work much better if I'm just logged in from the phone.

Probably a stupid question but do I have to change the wifi sleep policy for Stamina mode to work?
I have s stock ROM and Stamina doesn't seem to turn off wifi. Battery stats show that wifi is still the major consumer of the precious mAh.

If yes, all data will remain on.
Otherwise, stamina should turn wifi off.

you need to either add "Active Apps" to the list to stay alive during stamina mode or remove some from list. Another thing is Location Based WiFi; with this if you're in ANY area you have a saved wifi access point, the phone will turn wifi on and connect to it.
wifi drains less battery than your standard mobil signal sooo kind of a dumb complaint bro
I'm constantly on wifi and use my wifi calling + plenty of phone usages. 4++hrs of screen time and getting 22-30 hours per battery charge
Even with WiFi basically that whole charge.it only used 6%...

I don't know why its "dumb" to ask why a feature on the phone doesn't work correctly??
Anyhoo, back to the problem. As can be seen from the screenshot, wifi used 22% of the battery.
More importantly, it can be see here that wifi doesn't seem to switch off:
[/URL]
In the first half of the graph, the times that it was off was when I manually turned it off or changed the sleep policy.
Just to clarify, I don't need to change the sleep policy from "always"?
Yeah it seems this was added with 244 and not many people saw it before or simply don't have the problem but some people have...

Hmmm...now THAT assumption is kinda dumb.
Research first mate...then you will see that WiFi eats more juice than mobile signal.
Anyway, this bug is apparent on .244 update. Wait till Sony fixes it.

Thanks for the input, guys.
I didn't realise that it was just on .244. I only got my XZ last week and it always ran on .244 so I thought I was doing something wrong. Will wait for a Sony fix.
Do your research bro. Mobil signal saps more juice depending on strength of signal while Wi-Fi uses same amount of juice unless doing mass downloads. Why do you think T-Mobile devices get better battery life when strictly using WiFi with WiFi calling? Take it from a cs major bro. WiFi drains battery slower than a strained Mobil signal. As for your 22% of WiFi on that first image. Probably had a lot if data. Honestly though you should probably reflash

So basically, what you're saying is that WiFi eats less juice than mobile data PROVIDED:
1. Mobile signal is strained depending on signal strength.
2. WiFi is used normally with no heavy downloads.
Now this, I wouldnt argue with.
With your previous vague statement however, I would contest.

After days of monitoring my Galaxy S4 Active (S4A) battery life using Betyer Battery Stats and Wakelock Detector and Network Log, I noticed that my battery life is suffering because of these:
Connected to Wi-Fi:
Thousand of wlan_rx_wakelock
Connected to cellular (3G/4G):
Thousand of deleted_wakelock
Something must have initiated the network connection and when it couldn't see the Wi-Fi, it keep deleting whatever wakelock there are.
At the end, it woke my phone about 50% of the time, so I can't have more than 8 hours of battery life. This is just like my old Thunderbolt phone.
I am rooted, stock ROM. I debloated as much as I can, incIuding network related so like AllShare.
I tried factory reset, not using any 3rd party app,etc to no avail.
I do see in the firewall log and network log, the KERNEL is sending and receiving tons of packet.
So it looks like Samsung made something to the OS that caused this.
Either that or the root cause it.
If you're rooted, do you see this in BBB or other battery monitoring app?
Functioning but not best solution is to disable WIFI when using Mobile Data.

I have thought about it, but here's the problem:
1). Something is causing the network wake up. Even if I am NOT using Wi-Fi, I get deleted_wakelock instead, so much so that it took 50% of the time.
2). WiFi is always off when I am out and about (I use Llama to detect if I am not at home or work), but see no. 1
3). If I am at home or work and turned off Wi-Fi, then I'll be racking up charges for the mobile network (thanks to all carrier removing unlimited data).
The root of the problem is something causing this on the phone.
As mentioned above, I would like to get a consensus if anyone with a S4A seeing the same problem..

I am not beginning to think the root is somehow causing this, because I remember when I first got the S4A, the root is not out yet but I have awesome battery life..
And yes, I installed the same apps before I rooted the phone except those that require root (Titanium Backup, etc.)

Hello.
My XT1058 is running 4.4.4 at the moment.
I've noticied that when connected to a good WiFi, Android OS starts consuming battery.
It seems to only happen on my WiFi.
Signal strength should not be an issue, since connection is at about -60db.
I've a Linksys E900 running DD-WRT.
It's configured as N-Only, and running WPA2 Personal AES security.
I would not think it's a router's firmware issue.
Would you be able to assist?.
Thank you.
Is your phone always awake?
It's hard to tell.
It's not showing as "active" in the battery graph...
I've also installed System Monitor Lite, which tells me that the phone is actually going into deep sleep.
Today I've drained the battery until the phone shut off, and then charged it while powered off until 100%.
So I do not have more than a few hours of this deep sleep measurement.
But, slowly but surely, now back at home connected to WiFi, I'm noticing that Android OS is gaining a few % points each hour...
It's quite hard for me to ping point what's causing this issue, and was not able to find anything certain.
It's not location services, because it should happen on other wifis as well...
Thank you.
I had a similar situation with Android System eating a lot of battery, but my phone was always awake (solid bar in the battery stats) . Turned out it was backup to Google servers. I've unticked "backup my data" under Backup and Reset in settings and my phone goes to sleep now and battery is back to normal (4 hours of sot).
No, that is not what's happening here.
Phone is not active all the time, it's about 79% in deep sleep according to System Monitor Lite, and 12% at 300 or so mhz...
I've installed another firmware to my router, and the issue is still present.
Battery is draining while connected to wifi as hard or even harder than on 3G mobile data.
Went to sleep, and after some hours of not using the phone, this is the result:

You can see that the incline of the graph while being on wifi is steeper than on 3g. Also, Battery Drain app tells me that drainage is about 3-4% per hour, while it's below 3% being on mobile data.

I was able to run wakelock detector without rooting...
It turned out that there were some heavy wakelocks referring to nlpwakelocks.
I've read about those, and should be related to location services. But I didn't have location history enabled, and was already using battery saving as location configuration.
I also disabled location and rebooted the phone, without success...
So I decided to perform a hard reset on the phone...
I'm going to run it for a few days, and will report back

It worked ok for about 2 days, then the drainage reappeared.
I was able to run wakelock detector without rooting.
It seems there are a few wakelocks that are related to location services.
I was under the impression it was solved by forcing location services processes. It worked of for almost a week, but after connecting to another WiFi at another home, issue appeared again back at home...
So, summing up: I was not able to solve it yet... It has something to do with location services.
Aww that's a bummer, well good luck to you. I would try the whole root and use the xposed module to stop the wakelock, but since I'm on Republic Wireless and 4.4.4 there's no method of rooting for me.
It's something related to location services. I don't know what exactly.
It's quite odd, because for some reason Android seems to go south without any apparent reason, and starts getting fixates with location... and then, without me doing anything, it stops...
I've noticed that when this happens, if I'm using GPS as high accuracy, while having the screen on GPS icon would start appearing frequently on the task bar. That icon would be present for about 5-10 seconds then disappear. Then, after a few seconds or minutes, again, and again, and again...
This is not app related to me...

Hello.
It's been a while, and to be honest I forgot about this topic.
In fact, it was reminded to me while creating a new one, to tell you what I've discovered.
I've narrowed down the issue, and I think I know what's happening, but I have no idea on how to fix it, or why is it even happening...
It turns out it's not related to location services, since I've disabled them altogether...
But issue still remains...
It seems the drainage appears while connected to the wifi, and the desktop that's connected to the same wifi router is on...
Oddly enough, item that appears on the top of the battery usage is "Android OS", and nothing related to WiFi.
Also, idle time while issue is not present (that is, on wifi and desktop off) is superb...
I do not really know how could I fix this issue.
Any insights will be appreciated There's no network traffic while the issue is happening, because I've a meter installed on Android that tells me 0kb/s traffic.
PC is running Windows 7 64-bits, router is a Linksys E900 running DD-WRT firmware.
Thanks.
Believe it or not, after uninstalling ES File Explorer, issue disappeared... Not sure what's wrong with that app that makes Android OS crazy... But after weeks (or even months) after uninstalling the app, Android OS is not draining battery anymore...

I've been noticing huge battery drain on my Pixel 7 after the March update. No particular apps are draining the battery, phone idle alone does it.
I thought after the June update, it will make the battery backup better but I think it made it even worse. Last night I charged my phone to 100% and slept by turning off WiFi and mobile data. I even kept my network type to 3G to avoid background activities from 4G. And waking up after 5-6 hrs of sleep, I found my battery to be 89%. Screenshot is attached below. This is very disappointing. I bought this phone on February. It has not been a year and this is the performance I get from a flagship?
Clearly, this is not normal. Phone Idle draining 78%(of the 11% actual battery drain) of my phone's battery is crazy. I used to get 2 days of battery backup before that March update. And now I can hardly survive 16hrs. Please help me with a fix.

Factory reset, then be careful what you install.
You didn't use anything on the device though. The phone is idling more than doing any other task. So of course 78% of that small amount of battery drain is going to be due to the idle because idling is what is doing 78% of the time. I really don't see any issue here. I mean you only lost 11% battery over 4 hours and that first 15% drains quicker because lithium ion battery drain isn't linear. That first 10% always goes faster than the rest of the device. If it really bothers you, I would suggest changing the doze parameters to wear it disables the sensors on the device until it's unlocked.
Also, I just noticed that you have no mobile data on either SIM card. The phone is looking for a signal constantly and not getting it, that alone will drain battery, not to mention using dual sims has been known to affect battery life as well. Is the phone in airplane mode in that picture?
You aren't alone. I've been fighting the same issue with the battery drain since March. Up until the June update my excessive battery drain was showing as "Mobile network" but now it shows as "Phone idle". Strangely it drains the most when not in use. I've already done a factory reset and ended up with the exact same issue instantly.
It may be worth trying to disable the "adaptive connectivity" setting and see if that helps. I live in a weak 5g area and my phone was constantly switching between LTE and 5g causing signal drops and battery drain for me. I turned it off and it helped with both issues.
Settings, network & internet, scroll down to the bottom.

Tried almost everything except this one. I noticed this option was enabled on my phone. Turned it off today. Let's see how it goes. Thanks for suggestion!

Not in airplane mode. I turned off Data then why would it constantly look for signal?

I guess I should have asked first, I wasn't sure if you turned data off or not, I guess that's what led to the airplane mode. What about in developer options? Is mobile data always active still set to true?
Anyone with this issue my best suggestion would be use some kind of doze optimization mod. I know nap time is kind of outdated but some things still work correctly. I believe all of it does except for the GMS does magisk module. If you scroll all the way down to the bottom there's a setting that says wait for unlock. That keeps the phone in deep doze mode until you unlock the device, which also keeps the sensors turned off as well. Another option is diamond John's app Temefi. In the search box, type in doze, and you'll see a place where you can choose from several different Doze profiles. For this you need root, but if you're not rooted I would stick with nap time which just needs some ADB commands entered
i think it's a bug, i have no drain but look at the screenshot
"telefono inattivo" is phone idle, same percent but 1hr and more compared to yours, strange, indeed i've no drain
i always keep data, wifi and bluetooth on, since i work in a place where there's no 100% coverage of wifi, and bluetooth for smartwatch connection
have you tried safe mode?
