How To Fix Android 6.0 M Wifi Drain Battery

So.... other than setting WiFi to OFF during sleep, what is new here? Everything else has been suggested as a fix and has been shown conclusively to NOT be the fix. Did I miss something?
The problem is that the issue is sporadic and often goes away for a while. That causes everyone who does anything to the phone to think they found THE solution.
Back when I was in college, I lived in a building with an elevator that would occasionally freeze with the doors open. The actual problem was it had a bad cable and it would eventually spontaneously freeze and restart. But everyone who used that elevator had their own unique cure because that was what they did just before it spontaneously restarted

Media battery drain

I know this bug is common on jb devices, but I didn't have it until one week or so. I tried formating my SD, etc, but it sometimes appear sometimes not. There is any fix for this that can be applied on our phone? Anybody had encountered this problem?
PS:I posted this on DEV section because I think is very important and urgent.
PS2:In the screenshots the applications didn't drain my battery, I made them just to show you what apps I'm talking about.

[Q] mdm_hsic_pm0 kernel wakelock

Hi, currently running CM10.1 on my i9305 and am getting a big battery drain from kernel wakelock mdm_hsic_pm0. Done some searching around and can only find out that its connected to something called Fast Dormancy?
Anyone know how I can solve this problem or explain what this is so I can try and fix whatever is causing it?
Thanks in advance! :good:

Have the same issue. Means my phone rarely goes under 9% battery drain per hour.
The only information I've found on the problem has been off this other forum - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=23643509 - where someone states that
mdm_hsic_pm0 is to do with network traffic, so something might be using data in the background or something.

I don't know anything else though. After reading the above, I thought it might be to do with my battery management app (the issue has remained with both JuiceDefender and GreenPower) monitoring traffic and during off data if traffic drops below a certain amount. Maybe the traffic monitoring is causing wakelocks whenevery it's checking?

I had the same issue on the i9305....thought i m not even on a 3g network...its a pain why samsung is always trying to making things more difficult in their products. S2 had fastdormancy but you could toggle it off in the *#9900* menu but S3 does not. Anyway i fixed my issue that cause a massive drain too, but let me say that fast dormancy and mdm_hsic_pm0 wakelock are different. once i fixed the fastdormancy i got this one to worry about. i suggest you go over to youtube and search in the field : "fastdormancy erica griffin"....she has about a 10min video that explains the fastdormancy in the first 5 mins and how to check if ur service provider has it on your network and how to turn it off....that did the trick for me
Heads up: shes using a i9300 but the same thing goes for the i9305 (yes including the app in the google store that you'll have to download by the name fastdormancy i9300 toggle switch--->works just fine on my i9305!) and youll have to be rooted first....
FYI theres another tutorial how to turn it off but that involves tasker and is best left to the developers (i didnt understand one bit of that coding so i suggest you stick to erica's video. shes done a great job...)
I still don't understand how to fix since you said its not related to fast dormancy

Hi. I replied to another thread regarding this issue, but I have the same problems and I can share my thoughts on the matter here.
From what I understand (and read from another forum - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=23643509), mdm_hsic_pm0 is to do with your phone monitoring network traffic. In this sense, it could very well be related to FastDormancy.
Through my experience with the problem (which is about a month of use now), I've found that restarting your phone fixes the problem until something unknown sets it off again. After a restart, my phone will sit on ~2% - 3% usage per hour and then once this problem starts, my phone doesn't seem to enter sleep. No idea why.
I was able to remedy a big part of the problem by installing Greenify and having it hibernate apps like, Google+, Facebook and WhatsApp. No solution though.

From my experience apps have nothing to do with it, I tested with a clean install, not even google account set! Those wakelocks are still happening on 3G, but not on Wi-Fi. I'm trying a stock rom now to see what changed... the situation is just horrible, I have "android system" using more power than "screen". On my S4 on a 3h screen and all day usage on 3g "android system" is at the bottom
Never found a solution in the end. Tried everything, wiped and started again.... Deleted all apps... Etc etc. Switched to the rextreme ROM and the problem has completely disappeared. Battery performance is now amazing. Still a shame though as I use cm on a few other devices without any issue. Rextreme is good but not as good as stock jelly bean.
If anyone every finds a solution, post it in here so I can find it and switch back
I found that by editing the build.prop file in system with a manual command worked for me.
Not my own idea, but by putting the code ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=0 at the end of build.prop worked.
Seems to work fine on all 4.2.2 aosp ROMs I've tried.
Just save it and reboot. Root explorer works fine for this task.

PAC ROM on Tenderloin/ HP Touchpad
Hopefully, I am not the only one with this issue. I have searched around but no answers
I installed the latest PAC ROM on my Touchpad and have been able to update it to 4.4.4. I moved over from Evervolv and the performance jump appears to be significant. I do get the sense that the screen resolution/display is a bit reduced and not as high quality as the Evervolv version but it could be a simple case of my eyes deceiving me.
Regardless, here is my question - I have set up multiple users with me being the owner/administrator and the other accounts set up as restricted users .
The device works fine under the Administrator/Owner account. However, the restricted user accounts do not work. I have setup three different accounts and selection of any one of them after startup causes a reboot. Switching from an Administrator/Owner account to the restricted account also leads to a reboot.
Would appreciate any help/guidance/suggestions on how this can be fixed. Thanks.
My device take so long to reboot and also big lack when I use power or home button to wake up the screen. Other than that I love this Rom and using in severeal devices. Running latest 10-31 here.

Any one wanting to help me? Or do I have to post 10 of these silly notes to get to post to the real forums?
Hi
Thanks for the rom, I've had a coupe of issues, hope this feedback helps. The first one was after installing the 3.0 kernel 18 nov rom, mounting the ext partition on Windows 7 was flaky. Attempting to copy large chunks of data back to touchpad would freeze after about 100 to 300 mb. However, plugging in since had worked fine. Strange.
Trebuchet was scaling icons on home screens and drawer. Switched to nova and all looks better.
Next is the pac settings. Just enabling halo once has messed things up with the button bar. Back stopped doing any actions. The button settings section is broken, with buttons and lastly sub menu having top headings of rearrange/settings repeating every time you switch to the settings app. When it's like this neither rearrange our settings respond to key press.
After a reboot back button works for a while, and then stops working (across all apps and launcher).
Flashed 24Nov, back button issue still there, now considering to remove user data. If there's an option to restore pac defaults I might try that.

Or your issue is so specific that no one else has reported it, and since it's not repeatable, no one can help you. Most likely any issue with multiuser in CM11 is with Android itself, not the ROM. Try some other ROM and see if you have the same problem.

Very valid.........or it could be that there is a problem with the ROM?!
I had a different ROM about two months ago and multi-user worked fine on it. I switched to this ROM for performance. Although I was able to setup multiple users on this ROM, I cannot log in to the additional user accounts that have been setup
Hoping it is a bug with this ROM and I can get educated on the option to fix it. Please help and bump to the regular discussion thread where I can post my request.
Thanks
shumash, thanks for posting the query to the main forum....no answers but that is not the point. Thank you for being helpful and for taking the time. Appreciate it.
Hopefully, there will be an answer OR it might that the ROM does not support this feature. Via a terminal window, I have verified that Android is reporting the max number of users that have been setup. So, have to think it might be bug in the ROM.

I just setup another user account (not a restricted one). Rebooted and logged in with no problems. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it doesn't appear to be with the ROM.

Good golly, that is good news indeed!
So, I retraced all of the work. This time, instead of restricted users, I setup up regular additional users. Kept my fingers crossed, waited for the planets and the stars to align and watched the screen closely. No go. So, something is not quite right then at my end. shumash, thanks for the confirmation.
I did the next best thing. I updated the ROM from Oct 13 build to the latest. Cleaned the cache, installed the ROM and GAPSS and restarted......and then waited......and then waited.......and then some more......and then some more......did I say I waited for the boot process to complete?!
Finally, the screen is up, and I setup the additional users and then selected the new user to login. It worked! Deleted the new user and setup a restricted user. It worked! So, only thing I can figure out from this excitement is that the old ROM had a problem which has been fixed in the new ROM....or some gremlins were out to get me and they are now gone.
Either way, thank you. I have a working device. Will play with it some more and share feedback if u like....but here are a couple to consider - the start up process is taking almost five minutes....my PC boots faster! The Oct ROM was a snap to boot up but this is on the slow train to nowhere! Not sure what happened last night but I went to bed after the update around 2:30am....turned the device on at 9am and found the battery had run down completely. Not sure why.
Seems there are some compatibility problems with online audio streaming and blue tooth speakers? I cannot get TuneIn to work with external blue tooth speakers. The stream is lost and TuneIn craters......will give it a try for a few more days. TuneIn itself works fine. But when I try to stream to an external speaker via BT, it is goodbyesville.
let me know if you want me to share feedback.....and if u bump me into the main forum, I can post it right there rather than this rookie holding space!
A bit of an update......figured a few more things in life with this ROM
The battery issue was a one-time thing. Have not seen that drainage issue again. So, good news. What I did see is some thing is not quite right in how the battery is getting charged. My completely drained battery was fully charged in less than 30 minutes.....something that takes quite a few hours normally. I can only chalk it to something not quite right with the code in the ROM regards battery charging and capacity. Backing this is the Battery Doctor app.....while it states the battery is fully charged, the ROM indicates charging is not yet complete. Not sure which one or if both of them are getting inaccurate read on the battery in this ROM. Will keep an eye on it for a bit more time but no issue with battery drainage
Same story on the wireless streaming on BT. It was a bad call. All is fine but I seemed to have lost all of my bookmarks in TuneIn. Had to set them up again but will keep an eye on them.
Now if only I can get excited about watching paint dry or the grass growing while it reboots.....sigh!
Another update.....there is still something funky with the battery charging. I thought it was a mistake and a non-issue in my update yesterday. There is an issue. My tablet went to deep freeze last night. Cannot quite figure out what the issue is.
The tablet was at 65% charge when I was ready to call it a night around 2am. To be sure that there was nothing else that would cause problems, I rebooted the tablet and set it aside. The battery charge went down to 64% after the reboot. Set it aside for the night to check on its performance. Tried to turn it on @ 9am approx and the device would not come one. No sign of life when placed on the charging stand. Not even the dead/empty battery sign. Left it there for a few hours and still now sign of life. Did a hard reset of the tablet and it came one and displayed a charge of 13%. That is after it was on the charging stand for atleast 3 - 4 hours which accounts for the little bit of charge it showed. Took all day to get full charged. Did not touch it until it was fully charged. I am going to do the same tonight i.e. reboot the tablet and set it aside. Will see what happens.
Anyone experience this with the Dec release of the ROM? I installed the Battery Monitor widget to see if I can figure out what is going on. Will share an update when I see a bit more information.

I have been using the Touchstone charger for a couple of years now without problems......so, unless, we have an extraordinary coincidence, I would not think that is the problem. But again, strange things have happened......will post an update when I have figured out more clues.

Thanks, sstar, for the tip. Fortunately, I found the original charger cable and barrel. As I suspected, the issue was not with the Touchstone. I have charged with the barrel as well as the the Touchstone. I seem to have stabilized the issues with no more surprises. No more run down tablet with no charge left, no more blue tooth streaming issues. Have not played with the camera, etc. but that is not an active need for me.
Multi-user works well, device streams well, blue tooth works well, battery charges well (with the charger as well as Touchstone). All is well in PACROM land., atleast from where I sit at!
Open items from my end is the long boot time. As I mentioned earlier, the October release was a snap to boot/reboot. Less than a minute. This version takes almost 5 minutes - one minute of a blank screen followed by over 3 minutes of insert coin. I am sure there is a reason for this change and that smart folks are working to get this improved. I did notice that the boot sequence often fails and starts over once or twice before settling down to complete the full five minutes of startup.
Now to the mystery of what could have discharged the battery completely - I have no clues here. Atlease once, I did not see it complete the full boot sequence, so perhaps, it crashed during the boot sequence and bled the battery dry. Other times, I know it was a fresh boot that had completed fully. I have installed battery widget to monitor the battery charging/discharging and have noticed an anamoly atleast once which could be simply attributed to an application/measurement error. The widget reported a battery charge during the middle of the night when all creatures big and small in this home had gone to bed.....excepting the gremlins who volunteered to plug in the tablet for a charge for a brief moment!
Thanks to all of the good folks behind the PACMAN ROM. It is a wonderful and capable ROM and is an excellent demonstration of the community putting its best foot forward for the betterment of life! Thank you all again. Kudos and keep up the good work.:good::good::good::good::good:

Probably not a ROM issue. With latest build, mine boots in 40-50 seconds. Don't know what your problem is, but sometimes it's a network issue. Turn off wifi, boot with it off, and see if the boot time improves. If not, you may need to go the complete clean and install via TP Toolbox.
Disable NavBar on HPTouchpad PACMAN Rom
Hey All,
I've installed PACMAN Rom KK RC-3 dev recently with kernel 3.4 and it works very well. Battery live is very good and everything works a bit smoother than with my old CM11.
I choosed PACMAN because there are a lot of customisations... so i liked to get rid of this navbar! Can't count how often i hit HOME instead of spaceon the virt keyboard.
i planned to enable pie on the bottom border left side.
Now i have trouble getting rid of the navbar. In the Past pacman had customisation oints for AOKP, paranoid settings now there's only PAC settings. After Googling i can't find these settings (maybe because these posts where from jan-jun and an earlier pacman version)
ROM control > navigation bar > menu location > don't show
Hybrid Properties --> Interface, under Workspace drag the slider for "Navigation Bar Size" to 0%
installed build: pac_tenderloin-userdebug4.4.4KTU84Qeng.shumash.20141201.130846 test-keys
Can someone point me to the correct settingspage or give me a hint?
Do i have to wait for a newer release?
Thanks a lot and keep up the good work, you've gained a follower for this ROM

Well all I can say is I have no issues with signal strength at all. When my WiFi works fine, the throughput is good too. The problem I am having with mine (on both 6.0 and 6.0.1) is that I lose my WiFi connection every few minutes. What happens is I'll be browsing online and after a few minutes nothing is loading but the signal indicator in the status bar shows a full signal. I have to turn off WiFi on my device, then turn it back on in order for it to keep going. Very irritating. I have many wireless devices in my house, this is the only one doing it. Oh and I've tried using 2 different routers, no change.
Anyone else experience this?
No issue with mine, reaching as fast as 400Mbps near the router. Signal strength works as well as the Intel PCI-E wireless AC7260 cards in my house, so that's pretty impressive. Overall pretty satisfied with the WiFi performance.
I'm using a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router with a fibre connection, so I guess that's something.

But what is actually happening is that the Device itself seems like it is putting itself in to this wifi sleep state briefly for a minute or 2 and then just suddenly comes back to it's senses (suddenly wakes up and starts sending/receiving data packets which then resumes loading like normal.. and it does this randomly at nonspecific times..
It could happen within a minute or 2 of using the wifi... or sometimes even after an hour or so of streaming (sometimes within 5 minutes of streaming)....
***NOTE***
My Xperia Z5 has custom ROM and Kernel and is rooted with SuperSU with Xposed and busybox installed running Latest Marshmallow 6.0.1 (.224) Firmware..
THEN I suddenly decided **** this, I'm actually going to fix this shi* lol ( you know that moment when you just had enough and finally decide to bother doing something about it, ).. that's the moment I had..
Anyway to keep this simple...
After several hours of troubleshooting, testing and diagnosing , and trying to narrow down, isolate and fix the damn problem causing it to happen, I'm not sure 100% just yet but I may have found the problem and the fix to this IF the wifi "Hanging" doesnt occur anymore after doing some minor editing of the system files. (Only able to do with a rooted device) .
I will inform you guys with my results in a couple of days and hopefully the outcome is good news .. IF not, ill just have to keep trying and if all else fails ill just factory reset the device since getting everything back on to my phone will only take 30 minutes..
Peace!

Awesome, keep us posted if you find anything! I'm looking into it at my end as well FWIW, I have factory reset and even re-flashed the firmware multiple times with no improvement. Just trying to save you time and effort into reinstalling and stuff
Sweet as bro, thanks for the heads up.. Well so far I haven't noticed any dropouts of any sort as of yet. But I still have some things that I am testing.. Will update soon..

Well.. Here i am.. And unfortunately the issues still persisted.. To top it off, my phone decided to start having random moments where it would just restart on its on, even when left idle for a non specific amount of time. Anywhere between 1 and 3hrs.. I started getting really ticked off with it, so I decided to factory reset the device and install the latest (stock) firmware .253 from Sony using xperifirm and flashtool.. Flashed successfuly, applied latest andropluskernel, applied root, and xposed and also debloated the rom.. so far its been little over 12 hours and i havent really noticed any WiFi issues apart from the WiFi at some point tends to almost seem like it lags and slows down briefly and then just loads.. Not as bad as it was on previous firmware .225 .. Overall performance and battery on device seems pretty decent, without Amplify, without disabling any services or any system tweaks of any kind...
So now that I am onthe new firmware and rooted etc... I will as of this point specifically going to dedicate my diagnosticsand testing solely on the WiFi issue and see if I can find a permanent fix this time on the latest firmware..
Will report back soon.. Hopefully what I have in mind works..
(buffer size, WiFi chip power tweaks, WiFi sleep timers, etc etc etc)

I have tried looking through logs on the phone to try and diagnose with no success. Still trying here though

Sorry its been a while..
Just been busy..
So far on the recently updated firmware (.253), I have not had any wifi issues as of yet. And it has been fine since my last post...
One thing ive noticed though is that by default the wifi scanning frequency is set to 180seconds by default.. If you can, try and change the interval between wifi scanning and see if that helps at all..

No worries at all, I have too which is why I didn't see your reply for almost a week.
I haven't updated yet to .253, not sure how to go about it so I have been delaying. I've been poking around the forums here trying to see if anyone posted any instructions on how to upgrade if you are rooted on .224. In the mean time I will keep looking through logs and I'll try the WiFi scanning.
The crappy part is I recently turned on the fingerprint reader and I am also experiencing issues with that. Once or twice a day I get "fingerprint hardware not available" and have to reboot my phone to get that functionality back. I see others with the issue and it happens regardless of firmware so it's probably a marshmallow issue.

All good..
Well you're gonna have to download the firmware from xperifirm and flash it via flashtool.. And since you're rooted with 224, you will have to download the new andropluskernel v34 for 253 firmware.. And TWRP custom recovery 3.0.2. specifically for the Xperia Z5. If you need help on locating the files/guides, I can link them to you, since we aren't in the right thread for this topic .. Just shoot me a PM if you need to and ill happily point you in the right direction.

[Guide]Android System/OS Battery Drain FIX

After Installing Custom Mods and rooting on Oxygen OS I was experiencing a Android System battery Drain .
Also in custom Roms based On OOS I also had the same problem.
I was draining 35-40 percentage of my battery in a charge cycle.
I searched alot past 2-3 days on my phone to see which process is causing this Drain problem.
I found many but stoping them didn't fix it .
Finally today when I found that after SuperSU was installed
It was causing the Drain so I found a fix for this
Fix for all Roms having this problem
-Go to SuperSU app
-Settings menu
-Enable trust system User
-and enable grant permission during boot
-Then put the phone on flight mode and wait for it to cool down.
If this doesn't work
-Try setting default access to grant
-Enable MultiUser access
Hit the thanks button if this helps
Also tell me if this helps in the comments
Remember to follow all steps

Testing ... I post the result at the end of the cycle.
Doesn't work still battery drain and phone always warm

@Nishidh
Thanks for sharing but both solutions are security risk. Maybe Magisk is solution till SuperSu is fixed (hoping that it IS the culprit).

Try to delete all of the mkv files. That helps for me. No battery drain at all
i would say "kindda" help. cause still android system drains. but, a bit less then before. i would like to see some more days.
I switched to Magisk and drain is still there so reason is something else seemingly. It has something to do with FW/Modem. We all need to deluge OnePlus with requests to fix this mess.
Helps me
My current battery cycle
For me clearing the Google Play Services database solved the battery drain.
Apps,
Google play services
Storage
Manage Space
Clear all data
I then remained on that screen and restarted the phone into recovery without returning to the launcher.
In recovery clear cache only.
Reboot
Since then I have had no problems at all (though I am running complete stock no root)
No data is lost but you will have to add cards to android pay and set a couple of other items when prompted (like default backup account etc).

I mean no disrespect to the OP when posting this..
Isn't setting default root access to "grant" a crazy big security risk? Potentially malicious apps could reboot recovery in the middle of the night, flash some REAL spyware and feed back all your passwords without you knowing and could compromise your online accounts, still have to be installed first or some exploit would have to be found, but it just seems the risks outweigh the benefits.
Are you sure it's not another app you've consistently installed? F2fs? Clean installs + factory resets? Checked your signal strength lately? Wi-Fi + Bluetooth scanning? Facebook/whatsapp/etc installed? Google location history? Different versions of twrp? Titanium backups? Uncheck the the option in android settings to Backup and restore android apps? Installed several versions of older supersu?[ R4, r3, r2, r1, r2d2?]Franco kernel? [HIGHLY RECOMMEND. All the other kernels I've tried leave my device pretty warm, but franco keeps it cool), or Anoint your phone with luxurious oils, passionately bathe it and whisper sweet things into its microphone? I just wanted to make my thoughts known, some newer users to root might come by, try and follow these steps hoping for SOT gains, and needlessly compromise their phone in the process.
If you persist in believing cf supersu is the root cause (that's a knee slapper!!) I think trying another supersu might be a better way to go than ticking all those options. Say like, phh's or CWM.
Again, I mean no disrespect to the OP. Just my thoughts.
Forget about SuperSU, You guys have no idea what causes the andriod OS drain after flashing.... So stop blaming kernel, SuperSU, gplay services etc.. The answer is out there in forums.. Feel free to browse and search for it...

I saw you also sprayed ppl with their own bs on Blu spark thread. All i can say is I roam those forums a lot myself but haven't come across a clear stating about these issues (apart from the SELinux shenanigans). So what about you flood us with your great wisdom instead big boy?

Here you go:
Apparently you claim that you roam this forums and yet you didn't find the answer. Interesting claims.
Anyways here is your answer since even you didmt even fi d answer after roaming..
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811&page=5
Read it carefully though.. Explains why andriod OS drain battery more in first days (Not cycles) after flashing rom.. More apps, more the drain..
Tl;Dr for lazy people out there... Andriod os drain is present because Google itself has changed how andriod works..
On side note, I don't spread bs.. I just put my observations. It is upto people to fix it and accept the truth or get emo over it..

I read this post from Rovo long ago, and I of course was taking about abnormal drains they were occurring long after reinstalls or new ROM flashes. It's well known, the rebuilding of caches etc.. Anyone complaining before this incompressible period should be treated like you do. Also, still thanx for minding sharing something at least and on a SECOND side note, read again, I never said you spread bs, pretty much the other way around, i was just suggesting you enlighten us instead of "spraying people with their own bs" like for example, on the Blu spark thread where I know you were putting whiners back in place. Cheers.
I am using magisk, so what about me?
