Can't get custom recovery on Moto g 2014 XT1068. - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think I've tried every method of flashing a custom recovery on my moto g2 but the thing won't show up. I try to boot into recovery but the phone just turns off. Nothing happens so I tried booting into recovery through command prompt and still no success. Can someone please help me out with this. I have seriously no idea what to do.

Hello,
Before flashing custom recovery, make sure that you have unlocked bootloader. If not, here is the procedure: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
Remember to install adb and fastboot on your computer along with Motorola drivers. Minimal ADB can be downloaded from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
Once bootloader is unlocked, follow below steps:
1. Switch off your phone.
2. Press Power + Volume down button for 5 seconds and then release. You will see a menu with options like Normal Powerup, Recovery, Factory Reset etc. This mode is called as bootloader mode.
3. Now connect your phone to computer and from command prompt run below command
fastboot flash recovery <recovery image file name>
Click to collapse
4. Now power off your phone and start in bootloader mote (see step 2).
5. When you see the menu, press volume down button to navigate the menu to downward size and select/highlight Recovery option.
6. Now press volume up button and your phone shall boot into recovery.
Good luck :fingers-crossed:

After this how to install phillz custom ROM?

Stuck @ Fastboot

Hey guys, sorry for a new post. I did a search and wasn't totally sure about what i found so i figured i'd start a new post and get some help.
I bought a nexus off a guy for cheap but it was stuck at the fast boot (?) screen
image
the trackball doesnt work so i cant select anything. the only thing i can do is pull the battery out to shut it down. what can i do to fix this phone? I have no idea what to do to an android. I switched yesterday from wm6.5 so you're going to have to explain everything.
thank you!
You search the forums. That's what you do.
Trackball might be effed up. Replace that
That phone is unlocked
You get to that screen by holding down the trackball when you press power. (Like the above poster said)
Make sure the volume buttons or the trackball are not stuck in a pressed state.
I thought to navigate that screen you use the volume button and power button to select. Trackball doesn't work in that menu

thanks for the helpful comments guys. :]
i meant to also add that none of the buttons work either, volume or power button. i tried to flash amonra's recovery thru cmd prompt but i couldnt do much after that. i couldnt get into the adb prompt. it says the device isnt found, although fastboot promt found the device fine. anyway so after i flash the amonra recovery img i can't get into recovery mode. holding the power and vol down button gets me to the hboot (i believe it is?) but again, i cant navigate the menu with any buttons to put it into recovery mode so i'm pretty much stuck here.
and just to clarify, I have done a few searches as i've said and I didnt feel sure enough that the problems mentioned were my problem so that is why I'm asking for help here.
You should not go to any forum and feel bad for posting or have to say over and over that you did a search. There are many people that can do better and some will show up, hopefully with answers that are not painful to someone who has purchased a new phone... cheap. I would flash amon ra which you can do adb without using any of the phone hardware buttons and then see where you are at. There are many posts on installing amon ra and the instructions are also in the offical thread. With any luck you just have a hosed recovery and the flash will get you rolling.
Can you not navigate the fastboot/hboot screen with the volume buttons? If not then you're gonna run into serious problems. Make sure both the volume buttons and trackball are clear. You can clean the trackball by pressing it in with a piece of cloth and pushing it in different directions while pressed in, this should clear most of the junk on it.
You can also clean the volume buttons and power button a little better by removing the battery cover. Good luck bud.
trackball+power -> fastboot mode.
volume+power -> recovery mode. if you see androids on skates you have the stock recovery.
trackball+volume+power held = reboot
Recovery, boot etc can be flashed from fastboot only.
just to clarify, the first thing that pops up when i press just the power button is the fastboot. i dont have to press anything else, just power.
i flashed amonra recovery img while i was on fastboot mode from my computer (cmd i used was fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1.img) and it was successful.
Then i tried to put it into recovery mode w the command adb shell reboot recovery. It said that the device wasn't connected.
when i input the cmd fastboot devices i see my device connected, but when i input adb devices it says its not connected.
So i figured I'd put it into recovery mode on my phone by pressing volume+power. I get to the hboot screen with the three androids on skateboards (i realize the screen looks the same as fastboot but the selectable options here are different) but the volume buttons, trackball, power buttons don't work so i can't select "recovery" on the phone.
so this is where i'm stuck
It sounds like you have a stuck or f..d up trackball.
P_
I have the same problem has anyone figured out a solution?

You cannot use ADB commands when you are in the bootloader (i.e., fastboot) screen. You need to be booted into the ROM or into the recovery for those commands to work.
What I find difficult to understand is how come your volume buttons work to boot into the bootloader, but don't work once you are there?
Try flashing each partition from a stock FRG33 ROM (from here). Unzip the files, and flash the boot, system and data images using fastboot (e.g., fastboot flash system system.img) and then try to reboot normally.

[Q] Device not going into recovery

So I just unlocked the bootloader. I tried flashing the TWRP custom recovery. I accidentally installed the incorrect version (I'm sporting the 4.4 unlocked GSM version btw), so I thought no big deal, I'll just get the correct one. I find the correct one, the twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4 one, and flash that using fastboot. It looks like it works but at the beginning, it says "<bootloader> Variable not supported!" but it finishes. I try booting into recovery from the fastboot screen. It goes immediately to the unlocked bootloader screen and just stays there for like 3 minutes, then powers off, and goes back into android. Any help? I would love to get a recovery on here to root my device.
Edit: I've also tried mfastboot

Try fastboot reboot-bootloader and unplug your phone , from there use the volume down button to move to recovery and the volume up button selects recovery, not the power button. You may have to reflash twrp again as it gets over written sometimes

Yea do what he says. Right after you flash the recovery go directly to the Recovery use the option in the Bootloader menu. The recovery gets erased if you flash it then reboot the phone.

yes, I was making that mistake!
So you do this:
1) mfastboot flash recovery twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4.img;
2) fastboot reboot-bootloader; and
3) then get into recovery mode by pressing the Volume Down button to highlight recovery mode and pressing the Volume Up button to select the recovery mode.

I only did it the one way like I posted and it was successful. Before that, I didn't realize that you had to hit Volume Up to select boot into recovery and was hitting the power button, which of course, did not put me into recovery, it did a normal boot. Once I posted here and realized what I was doing wrong, I did it like I posted above, including fastboot reboot-bootloader command, and it worked.

strange, are you unlocked and using twrp/cwm or locked and using slapmymoto? if you're unlocked, i'd recommend reflashing twrp/cwm recovery image, sounds like it may be corrupt. if you're locked, i can't help as i haven't messed with any of the locked device stuff.

Why do you need to be in recovery. You should have write protect off already. If you are trying to flash something you can't without safestrap and the zip needs yo be made for safestrap. Just manually move the emails and change the permissions

If the button presses while rebooting to get to where you can select recovery doesn't work... You could try Quick Reboot -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot to reboot into recovery, or open a command prompt on your PC.. and issue the command.. adb reboot bootloader then pick recovery from there.. If those ways also error with that same message you are seeing now, then your phone doesn't has a problem with its recovery partition.
As others have said, if you are rooted with Write Protection disabled (SlapMyMoto v1 thread tells you to run MotoWPNoMo first, to disable write protection, then follow its process), you should be able to go in, rename the old APK, and replace it with the new one (and set the attributes the same) without needing to be in recovery.
Then again, if you rooted with SlapMyMoto .5 (before the MotoWPNoMo was available), or you never did the MotoWPNoMo process that would explain why you want recovery... you're trying to boot to "recovery" so that you can boot with the Write Protection disabled so you can make this change.

I was holding down volume up first, and about half a second to a second later the power button (while not having released volume up button). That didn't work.

Can't go into fastboot mode. Please help!

Hello. I have a razr I and decided to unlock the bootloader. I tried the button combination power + volume down several times, but the phone just powers up normally (actually rhe screen flashes for a second, but doesn't go into fastboot mode. I trided using adb reboot fastboot but the device just reboots. What can I do about it?
NVM, just did it by fastboot reboot bootloader...
Ok, one more thing. It seems my device ignores the key combo, but I was still able to get into fastboot mode by using adb. However, I have tried to flash a custom recovery with no success.
I tred using the supplied installer and after rebooting I get to the open robot screen with the red exclamation mark. Then, after holding some keys (not sure if power or power + volume down I get into recovery, but it's still the stock android recovery. Then I tried flashing the recovery image from fastboot mode. It sait the recovery was flashed, but still cannot boot into recovery. What's wrong with my phone?

[Q] Cannot enter recovery mode of Moto G

Hi guys,
I just unlocked my phone and tried entering recovery mode, but it won't work, it just boots normal.

Similar issue here: I unloacked the bootloader, and can't enter recovery mode of the stock Motorola recovery. Recovery mode stops with same picture as described above, robot lying on it's back. Does Motorola prevent loading the stock recovery when the phone is unlocked? I did not try to enter recovery with locked phone by the way, so can't tell if stock recovery didn't work in the first place.
Hi
That's the correct behaviour. Press volume UP+power, release power then volume UP, that v then shows the menu in recovery

2. Press Volume DOWN + Power buttons for 3 to 5 sec then release Volume DOWN and then Power
3. Now select Recovery. Android with /!\ will be shown.

4. Press Power and while pressing it tap Volume Up

Thanks, for the explanation! Only remaining odd thing: my device reboots to system OS instead of recovery when selecting recovery in the bootloader. I'm only able to go into recovery by:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery
I have the same exact problem where I could not go to recovery mode.
When in fastboot screen, I select Recovery by pressing volume up button and instead of phone going to recovery mode, my phone restarts to lands to lock screen.
When you say that you are able to go to recovery by -
Code:
fastboot boot recovery
What does it mean?
Which directory I have to be in to execute this command?
