Coming from HTC Desire HD, I was thrilled when I laid my hands on the Sony Xperia Z. But when I played around and wanted to tinker, I was utterly disappointed that my Xperia bootlaoder has a permanently locked bootloader. To my knowledge and spending hours on the net trying to figure out that there are no free or paid ways to get it unlocked I feel really disappointed that this powerful beast cannot be unlocked to run custom roms.
Thinking of selling my Xperia Z but it is such and elegant device. I wonder whether any developers are working on a solution for this or weather theres any prospect of finding a solution.

What on earth are you on about, the Sony XZ is one of the ONLY phones you can get permanently UNLOCKED, you simply go to the Sony site and you sign away your warranty and bam in return you get a bootloader that is permanently unlocked that you "officially" cannot re lock.
I think OP means carrier branded phones that come with an unlockable bootloader. Even Sony can't unlock such devices.

Some phones (usually carrier subsidised handsets) have non unlockable bootloaders.
The OP is asking if anyone is working on a way to bypass that restriction.

It was bought in Sri Lanka..Made in China C6603
It's simple to understand, if your Phone comes from a carrier then there's a 99% chance the bootloader can't be unlocked. I've SIM unlocked mine but the bootloader is a no go.

That's more the exception, rather than the rule. So backup TA partition, unlock bootloader, and start flashing Happy days

I know that Orange and T-Mobile brands their phones. O2 and Vodafone less likely. Not sure about Three (3).

T-Mobile UK sent me an unbranded handset. They usually supply branded phones, but not this time.

I don't have a z but I remember my xperia arc had same bootloader problem. To fix it you paid for a program (setool) or something...it was like a test point and you had to plug it into computer while holding tweezers to the SIM slot. Maybe someone can get that to work with the z?

The only problem with XZ is that its sealed to ensure its water resistant and theres no way you can get access to tinker with internals
My question to developer community is...Is it a no go forever or will someone at some point invest their precious time and energy on developing an unlock solution or should i get rid of this permanently locked XZ? Coming from HTC, I have little or less experience with Sony. Has it been an issue before eg Xperia series and some where down the line, developers at XDA found a solution? If so i want to wait. XZ is damn good phone and i really love it!!
There are some workaround for it to unlock at the Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 forum, and there were some discussion in the qna thread about this. Better u check it out.
So I just got rid of my lg g2 and am waiting to buy the z1 when its released this week I'm just wondering if the boot loader is going to be unlockable because if not then I might have to consider vying something else as it cripples our ability to flash certain ROMS. Anybody have any idea of how it works are all carrier phones going to be locked permanently?

Ask your carrier, but I bet they wont tell you.
Chances are that if you are getting on a contract it will not be able to be unlocked
Has anybody or does anybody know of there is a way to setup WiFi calling on the Z1 like TMO offers on other phones when cell service isn't good?
Thanks!
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
I didn't know that is possible. I'm interested too
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I believe that requires TMo proprietary software.
Sendt fra XPERIA Z SGP312
I had it on my Sony Z... hope someone ports it over to Z1....
... but there is liek a 10k bounty for it in the galaxy s 3 forums, and i think like a 1500$ on the Nexus 4 forums...
.. but i think it should be easier getting it from the Sony Z to the Z1 no?
Don't hold your breath for this one. I can't believe it's so difficult, but I'm not a developer and have no idea what it entails. I gave up on this after a quick bit of research and decided I'm just going to buy the T-Mobile version when it is released and sell my Sony-branded version. I wish this was easier!
I was also interested in the Moto X and found it's the same case: no wifi calling and no port or anything.

Just curious if anyone thinks that there will eventually be away to unlock xperia z bootloader.
checked mine and says it can not be unlocked according to offical sony steps.
Sent from my C6616 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Well, I can't unlock mine either...
If you got it through a carrier, the answer is no. Unless you pay for it at Sony store, i mean.
You can send the pgone over repairs claiming something about the battery, and pray for them to return a new one, but this is my opinion, not a fact
Sent from my SGP321 using xda app-developers app
Im honestly still waiting on that, I don't know why t-mobile wouldn't want Us to be able to unlock the boatloader. It sucks that we pay for it and not able to use it freely to its full potential.
It makes us c6606 users feel left out. Lol
Sent from my C6606 using xda app-developers app
It's fine if it isn't. I'm actually pretty satisfied with the stock software.
Just found out that you can't. I'll still hang around here incase someone finds an exploit to do it.
