USB port broken - can I still root? recovery? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive got a broken usb port on my z3c
Are there any apk's I can use to get root?
5.1.1
1.264

It gonna be hard. You can use adb over WiFi but in most scenarios You need Flashtool to downgrade to 4.4.x and I don't know is there any alternative way.

Do you have a custom recovery?

@GeePrhyme read thread title.

@Chamelleon
I've seen the thread title. He needs to root but his usb port is broken. So I'm asking if he has a custom recovery then all he has to do is flash a custom kernel that comes with root. Is that simple.

I understood it differently that he needs both root and/or recovery.

Actually I really dislike and I never recommend this method. Here is why: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/kingroot-4-0-t3105593
But in your specific case, I see no other solutions.
Once you've got root access, you can try to flash the recovery through Flash Gordon app.
It's just an idea, never tested on z3c yet, but it should work...
Download modified FlashgordonBB from HERE
Download NUT's dualrecovery from HERE (you have to download the "flashable" one for z3c)
Install FlashGordonBB.apk with a File Manager
Open Flash Gordon on your phone, tap on "Select zip..." and select NUT's dualrecovery ZIP file
Tap on "Grant" when root permission is asked
Tap on "Flash Now!"
Turn off (do not reboot through Flash Gordon)
Done!
Let me know

May I ask why? From my experience I can tell You it's not so hard to change port like this if You have hot air station or know someone who has.

it isnt the port itself that is broken,
perhaps the controller chip or something
and i dont know anybody with a "hot air station"

Ok, I get it. If it doesn't looks broken it doesn't mean it's ok. At least few times a month I'm repairing USB ports that looks like new but not working. Sometimes one of data pins can be broken inside and it may look fine but it wont be. I don't know how US services working but in mine I'm charging for it around 15$ so maybe it's worth to try in some service center instead of risking brick Your phone. If anything goes wrong with rooting and phone starts to bootloop You end with nice looking brick cause You wont flash it to bring it back to life.

You have to wait for next updates of kingroot or a new exploit to come out.

I have tried:
- FlashGordonBB
- Flashify
- TWRP Manager
- Rashr
None of these seem to work.
Apparently it is because of a FOTA kernel partition?
Could I flash a new kernel and then flash the recovery?
All I want to do is to flash [ROM][5.1.1|STOCK][D5803|D5833] 23.4.A.1.264 SLiM 4.9

It's not only for Slim rom, which is good, but if you get recovery you can flash all the android version in the future!
FOTAkernel? yeah maybe... anyway with Andorid 6 the partition table will change, so those methods could work soon. Let's hope
You're not able to flash any kernel without usb-cable OR recovery. Sorry.

I can confirm that this process does work. It's the method I went through when I upgraded my Tab S.
Tbh that is a long winded way to achieve something much easier. The Cf-autoroot step was totally unnecessary. It only does what the supersu zip does or twrp does itself.
Just flash TWRP from the first post. It will root your device with the latest binary.

Thanks for the update. Are you going to keep up with every new SU updated binaries and update TWRP every time the binaries are update. That would be great if you are willing to do that. I rather rely on the actual TWRP and SuperSU Developers to give me the zips etc. and flash my self as long winded as that may seem but people can choose.
Twrp is updated more often than the super su binary, but team win never seem to update the binary, so I'll just update it myself with each release. Not only that, each new twrp release has the same problems as mentioned in my original post.
I'm also looking for a way to get MTP working properly as that is the only issue now.
Regarding cf-autoroot. I don't think people realise there is nothing special about how it roots.
It basically does the same thing that twrp does itself or flashing a super su zip.
Cf-autoroot simply installs a modified stock recovery which runs a script to Install root then flashes back stock recovery.
If someone intends to install a custom recovery anyway then there is no point in running cf-autoroot.
Twrp will do exactly the same thing and so does installing a super su zip.
They all accomplish the same thing using a slightly different method.
The only difference will be that chainfire may keep each cf-autroot updated with the latest binary.
The reason chainfire created it is for people who want to stick with stock recovery instead of custom

Just flash twrp, boot into it then hit reboot. Twrp will give you the option to root.
If doesn't then you are already rooted and probably just need to update the super su app.

That's a feature of lollipop. It overwrites with stock recovery. Happens on many devices. You need to boot into recovery immediately after flashing twrp, twrp will then patch it so stock recovery can't replace it.
When flashing uncheck auto reboot in odin. When it finishes flashing hold power + vol down + home. As soon as the screen goes blank hold power +vol up + home to boot into recovery.
Thanks for the information, but now I've flashed your new package root+twrp and it's working great
Thanks again.

Xperia SP - TWRP Recovery problem

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but anyway, to the point. I rooted a Xperia SP with towelroot, checked with rootchecker and it was okay, after that I installed CWM and then flashed a ROM and probably CWM changed to TWRP with the ROM. Then I ran some debloater script the ROM maker had done and forgot to flash gapps (lol), or more like debloater script made the phone to reboot, so I let my phone to reboot and try to go back to TWRP and it just doesn't work... Touches won't get recognized. Also I just noticed that the root is gone. Looking for some help here now. Not so used to this stuff.
Things I've tried:
root again with towelroot, didn't work
flash gapps, didn't work
try to install recovery.img again with adb, didn't work(I just may aswell not know how to use adb anyway)
Ask if more information is needed. Thanks! Hope someone could help me.

1.You should have posted this in Q&A section
2.Never use towel root on lollipop because all ROMs are rooted by default.
To enable root Settings->Developer options->Root access->Apps and ADB
3.Dont try debloater script just yet. Use it when you are settled with ROM working.
4.Now what you need to do is
a.Boot into recovery and flash the latest TWRP zip.
b.Reboot into TWRP and wipe everything(data, cache, system but not external)
c.Flash ROM zip and gapps.
Hope this works:good:

Realy dude? Tons of threads of how to root with 6.0.1.
Anyway here are the basics:
- Enable oem unlocking and usb debugging in developer options
- Unlock the bootloader: Boot into fastboot and in cmd type: fastboot oem unlock (will wipe your phone so backup first!), reboot
- Flash or boot into TWRP, do NOT modify system if TWRP asks you to.
- Flash the latest systemless superSU.2.67 root zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/wip-android-6-0-marshmellow-t3219344, TWRP will ask you to root, ignore that!
- Reboot and install BusyBox from Play
- Done.
Don't i have to install the files for the computer and all that for the drivers and download such stuff?

You can unroot from within the superSU app or flash the UPDATE-unSU.zip in recovery and reroot. Next version of TWRP will probably be compatible with systemless root.

Leave it as it is if you have no issues, but both methods used at the same time on the same phone can cause problems with root and permissions.

[GUIDE] Marshmallow Root Guide for ZE500KL

ATTENTION!
You MUST read all the guide BEFORE doing it, if you do it without reading all of it first you may ends up bricking your phone!
Prerequisites:
Asus ZE500KL (may work on ZE500KG, but haven't tested, do it on your own risk) on Marshmallow, NOT LOLLIPOP!
Also, it must have fully booted AT LEAST one time, otherwise, you'll soft-brick it.
If your phone is not on Marshmallow, you can use THIS guide insteadDownload and put the unlocker zip file and the SuperSu zip file in the phone
How To:
1 - Install adb and fastboot driver (follow THIS guide)
Now you can connect the phone to your computer2 - Reboot in fastboot mode with one of the following method:
a -Volume Up while booting upb -With adb, after enabling USB debugging in developer settings, using:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Now that you are in bootloader, you have to boot in TWRP,
download THIS recovery (is the twrp one) and boot in to it, using this command:
IMPORTANT: DON'T FLASH IT OR YOU WILL GET BOOTLOOP!!!
Code:
fastboot boot TWRP-x-x-x-x.img
(Obviusly the recovery name must be the one you downloaded)
IMPORTANT: DON'T FLASH IT OR YOU WILL GET BOOTLOOP!!!
It should automaticaly enter in recovery.
Now you MUST flash FIRST ZE500KL_BootloaderUnlock.zip, otherwise you'll brick your phone
Btw, the recovery will mount your phone's memory, so you can put now the files in the phone, if you forgot to do it before
AFTER you installed the unlocker zip, you can install the SuperSu zip
When the install is complete, clear the cache and reboot your phone, now you can enjoy your root!

to make permanent.. the command must "fastboot flash recovery twrp_X.X.X.X.img"
but make sure to unlock bootloader first...

[HELP] How to Install TWRP without PC.

Hello everyone,
I'm in a little trouble. I need to install custom recovery on my Xperia SP C5302 but I have no PC.
How can I install TWRP ( preferred ) / CWM/Philz on my device ? Is there any way ?
Thank You.
Note : There's a cyber cafe beside my house. But all their computers are running Windows XP.
If there's no way to install without PC then can I be able to install custom recovery on my device with Win XP ?
Thanks again.
Do you have root?

Most likely soft brick. But who knows, hard bricks even happen when they never touched anything for some people.

okay. Is there any way to install TWRP without PC then ?
or any custom recovery. philz, CWM anything
Install a terminal emulator by Jake Pelvich from Play store.
Extract the official TWRP img from the TWRP fota zip, or, if you already downloaded an official img, put it into the root of your internal storage.
For ease of access, but still mnemonic, rename the img into "twrp.img"
Open your terminal emulator, and enter "su" and run. This will make the terminal to request root, as you're elevating the shell into root.
Now, we "dd" the TWRP image into your FOTA partition. Copy and run the following:
Code:
dd if=/storage/emulated/0/twrp.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/FOTAKernel bs=4096
Reboot to check if recovery is accessible after hitting volume up when LED lights up

Like already mentioned, press volume button UP when the LED lights up during your XSP bootup

There is no LED during bootup. Either I didn't understand. I tried with software to boot into recovery. But my device just complete a reboot everytime. What to do ?

What ROM are you using? You need a ROM that can boot a FOTAKernel recovery, and not all of them can (especially stock based ones, since stock by default doesn't allow this).
Ditto.
If you are not using a ROM that supports booting from TWRP, then I can't suggest a method to install other recoveries without a PC.
I do not say it is impossible though, but it'll take a lot of brain power, and moderate understanding of shell scripting in order to reverse engineer the other recoveries provided in the dev subforum.

I tried with Terminal Emulator and it seems okay. But I can't boot into recovery. Tried a lot of process. Doesn't work. Now can I install TWRP with pc ? or I need to flash my stock back to install from PC as I replaced my stock img file ?
Again if I flash stock now, will my bootloader be locked again ?

Like already explained by Tomoms and me, you need a ROM that supports booting recovery from the FOTA partition in order for my explained method to work. You didn't also tell us which ROM you are using.
No, you dont need to flash your stock back. Leaving the FOTA partition replaced does no absolute harm at all.
If you flash stock, your bootloader will still remain unlocked. In order to relock, you will need to explicitly relock it, by using the relock bootloader option provided by flashtool. If you backed up your TA partition, restoring it will automatically relock your bootloader.

Okay thanks everyone. I finally installed TWRP, CWM as well as Philz.
I was using 4.3 Stock. Finally installed those from Doomlord's thread. That was really handy to use.
again thank you all for supporting me.

Alright, good to know you finally installed the recoveries. 4.3 Stock ROM does not support my method explained in my recent post. And no problem!
