I can't seem to shake this wakelock! It has persisted between 2 clean rom installs and 2 kernels. Can anyone advise?
I killed it by doing this:
1. Install Greenify
2. Greenify Facebook
3. Go into Greenify and if Facebook has been woken by that process (kind of hit or miss. You have to catch it at the right time), select Facebook and icons will appear in the top right corner of the screen
4.. Select the icon that looks like a pair of scissors to prevent it from being woken by that process
5. Profit
I have an even better solution: don't install Facebook.

Is that really necessary? Why would you click the thread title if you where not interested? I understand the need for debatable topics, but darn, fishing for them seems to go on a lot on XDA. I get its invasive permissions, I do. So, I see your angle, sir. Perhaps recommending a better app that doesn't have said invasiveness?
OP: I tried Fast for Facebook, but its a bit buggy, and pro version is paid. I uninstalled it because attaching photos inside a webkit window in an app doesn't work for Messenger for some reason. It's a lot easier on your battery, beast of a battery it is in our Nexus.
Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot about Trillian! Trillian is really really good for Messenger, but a bit buggy for Messenger groups. It's still good for getting a hold of your contacts, though, without having your microphone and camera turned on and bugged for no reason. Picture attachments work too, they open a direct server link in Chrome and auto-attach to the chat window so that you can see them.
Alternative Facebook solutions anyone? This guy needs help not having his phone wiretapped. XD
Not going to lie, Greenify is gold! I love the xposed module, too.
Not installing Facebook is a viable solution to the OP's wakelock. In fact, it's the most sensible solution, since you can still access Facebook using a browser. Seriously, do you really need to know how many people are posting useless crap on your facebook wall?
So yes, stating the obvious is absolutely necessary.
EDIT: Just to make this clear, Facebook is a resource hog, which is why not installing it is the sensible move. Permissions have little to do with it.

that was my solution to a Facebook wakelock years ago. when I never used Facebook for months, it used 10-25% of my battery, daily. so I uninstalled it. I've haven't been happier about it since. now I only use Facebook in the browser. anyways, did you know that Facebook is ranked at top 5 most hungry resource hog android apps?
Did anyone know if you use Facebook in chrome it will still push notifications?

I keep my Facebook app because I like it. What I do is freeze it with titanium backup when I'm not using it and unfreeze it when I want to use it.
Try metal.
I used to only use Facebook thru chrome. You cannot
Share things or get updates as it is just a web site
Metal is for Facebook and twitter. Very light app.
It is in play store. Get it.
Can't greenify
Same issue here. Even greenify can't hibernate Facebook and messenger
On Chrome for Android, you can set websites to send you notifications as if they're a native app... What I do is click the dot menu, then tap "Add To Home Screen". Then I move the FB Website icon to my SOCIAL folder.
Then I go back to the 3 dot menu, select settings (while on the Facebook website), go under advanced and you will see " Site Settings". Give the FB Website permission to send you notifications through Chrome... And viola.
As for the greenify.... From what I can tell, somehow the FB app can refuse to be greenified... Look in Better Battery Stats and you'll see that FB is constantly running a bug report service... (At least that's what I've seen). What I used to do, before I got rid of it all together... Was just seipe to close it as soon as I was done with the app. That was a bit much in my mind. So I went the web browser route

Thanks so much for getting some resources together, guys!
Yeah, those push notifications for Facebook are annoying. Clear cookies and cache, log out of Facebook on Chrome, use Firefox browser instead, disable and greenify chrome (only when needed for webkits). I am going to try metal, but I love Trillian for Messenger at least. I was looking for an app solution, seeing as m.facebook.com doesn't have all of the functionality of regular Facebook.
When I get done rooting my device I'll make a video on this start - finish. Gonna give myself a 2A rapid charge so I can clear battery stats right off the gate - Nexus 6.

Have you considered just using Facebook.com and checking the option for request desktop site? It's a hassle unless you can somehow get it to stick for each visit. But that would give you the full site.

If you've got the Firefox Android browser, there is an add-on for "request desktop website" automatically for your specified websites. That might work.

So I was thinking that the contacts picture feature is really under used in most phones. I was wondering if there was a possibility of having an app that would sync contact photos with their profile pictures on facebook. You could sync by name or phone # if your friends have put their cell #s on their profile.
Also as a side note to that it would be nice to have a better facebook application something similar to the Iphone's app where you are able to use facebook chat aswell as see notification popups and such.

1) Open Market.
2) Search for "facebook"
3) Install app named "Facebook Contact Sync" (Syncs facebook photos to contacts)
4) Install app named "fbook" (general facebook app, no chat)
5) Install app Named "Meebo" (Supports facebook chat)
why cant there just be an all in one facebook app with chat. Why do i have to use 2 programs to do the job of one app that was already developed for the iphone and which im sure can be developed for the g1.
Sorry sir I'll get right on that.

Well from what i have read on this forum as well as off site, Developing a app for facebook with the abilities of the one for the iphone is virtually impossible at this time.
See, google and myspace are together and microsoft and facebook are together. and with apple, that app has access to the API's within facebook to easily sync and access facebooks information. Google doesnt have that ability since them and microsoft are "enemies". Full functionality with a facebook app for the G1 or android in general is probably not going to happen for a little while unless someone finds a way to access all the information on facebook.
i kinda of have an idea but i am not exactly sure if it would work

Are you the creator of the facebook app?
Bhogan123 I dont really think that that is entirely true though. There are many other programs that have integrated features with facebook. I dont think they are exclusively contracted with any company.
Fbook.
Does anyone of you have the last version of Fbook? Or any older one that is not current. I hate the new one, it won't let me upload photos!
Thanks in advance.
Have you tried emailing the dev and informing him of this issue?
I was being stupid. My album was full, it wasn't the application.
I just use iphone.facebook.com as a bookmark... the app just links you to the page anyways and I find it more stable than the app at times.
fBook application not in Market?
A friend just got the G1 this week. He is looking for the fBook application but cannot find it on the market. If he searches for "fBook" it does not come up. When he looks at the applications by popularity list, it is not there. I sent him the cyrtek barcode link and the market cannot find it: "There are no matches in Android Market for the searchname:com.nextmobileweb.fbook"
I can see it just fine on the market, I can search for it and find it, and the Cyrtek Barcode URL works as well. I do have the apk and I am waiting for him to get home to install it by "hand".
My question is, what could be the reason he does not see it? I do not yet know his firmware version and he is not the "rooting" kind. I assume (shame on me) that if he got the phone this week it should be at least on the RC 33 version, yes?
wergeld
Search typing facebook, i downloaded today...
Depending on when his supplier got the phone, it may still be on RC30. You should ensure that he's on RC33 at least, if for no other reason than he'll be ready for the OTA update push that's now occuring.
Because the market also works on SDK, if he is on the Android 1.0 SDK, he will not see any 1.1 or 1.5 applications, just as users on the 1.5 SDK will not see any 1.1 or older applications on the market either.
FBook?
EDIT: Apparently its still in the market...
Can someone confirm?
Im runnin ADP 1.5, and Im not really believing that it runs off SDK thing because I just re-rooted my new phone coming from another phone with 1.5 on it. I was able to download it on that phone fine.
I just did a fresh install of jf 1.5 adp, and can no longer find fbook in the market. I had this exact same rom installed previously, and was able to locate it with no difficulties. Seems strange...
I can't find it either and I'm on the new 1.5 official update.
Cyrket.com doesnt even have it listed under the "Social" section for any of the SDK numbers.
Maybe they're fixing it??
This is strange....
I can confirm its been pulled from the market. I just reflashed this morning and could not find the app. So I check my store demos just in case it was blocked. None of my G1s can find it in the market. I miss this app, if someone could upload the apk please, that would be awesome.

Facebook For Android is a piece of ****. I hate that people actually like it. The iPhone version is twenty times better....seems like the Android app was coded by an utter retard.
Flow is awesome: better even than iPhone official version of Facebook which - while good - suffers far more annoying bugs.
Through Flow you can set up push notifications easily through its gmail interception system. They work immediately and look brilliant. If you turn the popup on then when someone comments it shows their picture and what they said in a little window. You can scroll through multiple popups. notifies you for everything you have set up Facebook Emails to tell you about.
It supports loads of things that Facebook for Android doesn't support such as tagging, untagging, deleting posts, viewing 'likes', setting profile pictures and uploading whole albums from the gallery at full size. Not too keen on the icons on the main menu but the developer is working on it.
Also it doesn't keep you logged into chat 24/7 and drain your battery, nor does it link to the browser everytime you try and do anything. Only thing it doesn't support is inbox (owing to Facebook API I believe) but it does give push notifications of inbox messages and opens up the requisite page in the mobile site.
Flow for Facebook all the way - absolutely phenominal. Screw the official app.

Why would you want chat within the app? Its a piece of crap on iPhone too and drains battery like hell as it doesn't keep you logged in server side. You can download Beejive for Facebook for FREE. It not only keeps you logged in for as long as you choose to but its very reliable and uses c2dm so uses next to no battery.
Screw chat within the app.
For a great widget use Launcher Pro. Best Facebook widget I've seen.

IPhone Facebook app is a lot better than Facebook for Android but it still leaves a lot to be desired. Notifications are clunky and when you open up a push notification it doesn't refresh the notifications feed itself upon opening. Photo comments OFTEN don't show even though you've been sent a notification of one - often takes a number of restarts and refreshes to show them. Lots of other little bugs. Like I say, iPhone app IS better BUT just look on iTunes at reviews of the app to see that it is less than perfect!
Thanks, i just bought Flow for facebook and its great!
Flow is actually nice but the lack of a widget lets it down.
thanks everyone for responfding
i just installed flow and like it so far
gun bros
FLOW developer is working on a widget I believe.
The app now has an integrated quick reply feature so when your notification popup appears you can immediately respond to it without even leaving the screen you're in. Pretty brilliant I reckon and I've seen nothing like it on any other platform.
thanks for flow
Sorry if this is noob questions, but all the time on my phone, google play will open up to a random game/app while I'm doing other things. Specific examples:
When I'm using talk to text-- the microphone will grab half of what I'm saying, freeze, and then switch to google play with "uber" up or something.
When I'm typing a text message, google play will pop up.
When i wake up the the morning, and go to turn off the alarm, there is an ad in the way, and I have to press home, open clock to turn off the alarm.
These are the three most common instances where the ads come up, and it's just super annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions to get this to stop?
Thanks in advance!!
Must be an app you installed recently. Try checking Google Play reviews of apps you have on your phone (look for reviews with similar complaints).

As said above it's probably an app . I had a similar problem long back . It's usually from an ad supported app that runs in the background (eg: Applocker or equivalent, photo hiding app , another telephony app like full screen caller HD or something) .So check which apps are running in the background before you start un-installing :good:
surely an app....
If you're a normal user, you need to revisit you Installed Apps and find out! (some app which has lot of Permissions is doing this, ignore them in future)
If you have root, AdAway would be handy.
If you have root+Xposed, MinMinGuard will do the job.
It's surely an app. Try installing this, will tell you which app are pushing ads to your phone, then you can uninstall them.

personally its far too simple, there are more advanced tools out there if you have root.
Simple is not a bad thing if it does everything a more complex app does.
I use this functionality in Titanium Backup. It can deal with system apps in several ways

I agree 100%
I've tried Servicely, Amplify, Greenify, and Boot Manager (the last three with Xposed integration) and have removed all of them.
Ice Box beats them all hands down in ease of setup, ease of use and, most importantly, it actually keeps unruly apps from restarting themselves.
Somehow they would always spring back up when using Greenify and the others and I would always see them in the "Battery" screen as have used some % of my battery even though they weren't used.
:good::good::good: for Ice Box!
Give it a try, the free version can deal with 15 apps and is definitely worth a look.
I used icebox for a while too and thought it was the solution to all my life's problems but had to find a different solution after I realized that app keeps a constant connection to some mysterious address in China and sends data each time anything happens on your phone

Is that really happens? What's your source? I can't find anything on Google regarding this...
AFWall logs, NetworkConnections app, traceroute, google play store developer info. Trust me. I wouldn't say anything if it wasn't true. I really...really liked the app. It may be nothing but app analytics but I could never get the dev to reply and the address provided on google play appeared to be bogus when I looked for it in Maps...which I did report to google along with my firewall logs. Maybe its fixed. I get that developers make better results when they get feedback but I don't like unnecessary connections especially ones without an off switch. The amount of data sent appeared to be miniscule but very constant even when the app wasn't in use. I end up making my own using Everywhere Launcher + Secure Settings + Macrodroid. Secure Settings does the same thing but appears to be abandoned and the licencing used for it doesn't seem to be affected by being blocked from the internet.
How do I see which apps are always running? Im afraid that I'll freeze a app and it'll break my phone lol..

It seems to be ad pop ups. I would be using an app such as whatsapp or watching a video through my gallery and the add just pops up out nowhere. it has never done that before.
If you get apps from places that are not "trusted sources" many of them have these pop up ads.
Go through and we which apps have Device Admin, Accessibility, and Draw Over Other Apps permissions
Are you using stock Gallery or another app?

Personally, I do not use any antivirus on my phone. I tried some of them before but finally gave up due to the large consumption to the phone memory which results into a slowdown of system and a faster drain of power. Plus, the major drawbacks of these free AV, like Avira, Kapersky, Bitdefender and more in Top 5 Free Antivirus in 2018, are the ads and popups bundled with them. They keep sending annoying ads and pop-ups during running, and even worse, sometimes they downloaded and installed things automatically.
Thus, if you download apps from playstore, surf the safe websites and connect to a clean outside device, do not bother to install a AV on your phone.

so l read this thread awhile back and thought nothing of it ............ until now!
I have "developed" the same Issue! and yes Its definitely an app that has access to "appear on top" and its under Apps> special Access> apps that can appear on top! Now for me to identify the culprit......? only issue though is if you have this issue your most likely the kind of user who experiments and installs several apps at once.... so here goes my trial by elimination process?
Hi had this problem.
I deleted the free APK that I had installed but I was still getting pop ups.
You need to go to settings / apps and right at the end of the list there was a app with no name or app logo.
Deleted it, problem solved.
I tried virus scan apps and nothing found it.
Hope this helps

Yeah that's exactly what I saw on my list.
No AV will block an ad. They block known, to them, malware apks. Use something like Addons Detector from G Play store and/or Nice catch from S Galaxy store to list all the apks that have ads modules and then remove those you installed last or don't recognise or need.
Run Malwarebytes.
