We've been trying everything to get in but no such luck. I've been reading around and come to the conclusion that we won't be able to. Then I thought I'd return to stock from recovery but can't even get into that. Will the phone remain that way forever or is there someway to reset it?

first I am sorry for your loss.
if you want to bypass screen lock and have a working recovery, you can remove the file named"gesture.key" and after rebooting into system every password you inter , unlocks the phone.
if you have TWRP ,first go to recovery, mount data partition : go to mount section and check data.
then return to main menu and go to advanced section and choose file manager .
then go to the /data/system
find a file named "gesture.key" and delete that file by long pressing on it and choose delete.
now reboot the phone into system and in lock screen enter what you want ,no matter the phone will unlock.
if you have philz touch recovery or CWM .
FIRST download "aroma file manager" from here.http://d-h.st/iqn
then place it to your sdcard.
reboot to recovery ,mount data partition, and then flash aroma file manager you've downloaded above.
then just go to /data/system and remove "gesture.key" and it's done.
press thanks if you find this helpfull.

Thanks for the reply, but I should've made it clear. I don't think the phone has a recovery installed. I've tried all the combinations (power plus volume up etc.) but no luck. If I hold the power plus volume up it vibrates three times and that's it.

so if the phone has no recovery installed, but the bootloader is unlocked ,you can flash a custum kernel with built in recovery like Zombie kernel and then do the rest things.
but if the bootloader is locked.you simply can't do anything.
but there is a question here: what you looking for?
a)you just want to unlock the phone and you don't need the data that stored in it.
b)you want the phone to be unlocked ,without touching the data.
Yeah I have no idea if the boatloader is unlocked. I assume not.
At first we wanted to get in and see if he had any pictures, but accept that it might not be possible. Just seems a shame to have a brick lying around, so in that case I wanted to know if it's possible to wipe it and start again. Thanks for the help.

if u dont want to save some data like sms, mms, contacts, emails and so on u can simply install last flash tools on your computer, and then download any FTF firmware and flash it on the phone with check clear data box, or just tik the clear data box, this method would not wipe internal/external memory and u can save pictures, movies and all of files in internal/external SD (remember to not wipe internal SD) and u can use the phone
i also sorry for my bad english

Hey folks,
I have a couple of question before rooting, i was going to use regaw_leinad 2.1 guide unless anyone has a better suggestion ?
1. By rooting my phone am I removing the standard ROM or just making it that I can edit it?
2. How does one install a new ROM for example the ALOYSIUS 2.1 looks great but i haven't a clue what to do?
Any help is much appreciated

There are 2 parts to what you are doing. You are gaining root access, and then you are using that access the write a new recovery image to your phone. You may keep the standard ROM.

You install new ROMs using the recovery image you installed while rooting your phone. Copy the .zip file(s) for the ROM you want to flash to the root directory of your sdcard. Boot to recovery by holding the HOME key while you press the power button. In recovery, you have the option to backup your existing ROM and to install a new one.
Thanks
Awesome, thank you v much indeed.
I have rooted my phone with Regaw's instructions, and it was very straight-forward.
1.) When you root your phone, you have a special recovery image that you can boot the phone into, and basically back up/restore your phone in case you decide to flash different roms and didn't like it, or you screwed up somewhere along the way. You can toggle the usb function, meaning you can use a terminal emulator (command prompt for windows) and move files between your pc and the phone while in recovery. You can theme your phone, can remove unwanted apps, use apps from the market that require you to have root access.
The simplest reason; to have full control of your phone.
2.) When you aquire root on your phone and able to boot into recovery and such, you can take the zip file that the rom was created in, and transfer it to the root of your sd card. Then you can either A) Open the command prompt, type in adb shell then type in reboot recovery while the phone is plugged in with the pc. The phone will reboot into recovery. B) Just power off the phone completely, then press and hold the home key and turn the phone on until you get to the recovery screen. From there you will need to backup your phone if you haven't already. Select backup/restore, then select nand backup. It will take a few minutes for this process to complete. When finished, you can go back to the main screen, and select wipe. Then select wipe data/factory reset. Press the home key to confirm. Go back and select wipe Dalvik-cache.
When done, go back to the main screen and select flash zip from sdcard. Scroll to the rom that you put in and select it. It should take a couple minutes to flash the new rom on your phone. When it's finished, you need to reboot your phone. The reboot process will take about 5-10 minutes depending on the type of rom that you flashed.
A few tips:
*Once you root, you have voided your warranty for the phone. But have no fear! Make sure you save your sdcard to your PC and run the RUU before bringing the phone for service if you need to. When service is done, you may transfer your sdcard contents from the pc back to your phone, do a quick root, and you are good to go.
*When wiping, your phone will be factory reset, meaning you have to sign into google again, redownload all your apps from the market if you have any.
*If you do like the rom of your choice, try to tweak it out the best you can, then do a nandroid (backup your phone) just in case you flash another rom. If you flash a second or third rom or whatever and didnt like it, you may do a restore on your phone, and all your info will be saved from the last nandroid you made. Be careful on how many nandroid you do. It takes up space on your sdcard. You may rename your nandroids, and remove the ones you don't want.
*The battery may get hot when flashing roms. This is normal, just try not to over do it.
*This Hero CDMA forum is now your best friend. Read and search, read and search before posting a question. Not that we don't mind answering questions, but if it has been asked 50 times, some people will give you snarky comments.
Good luck!
thanks , one more thing
Very helpful and I have successfully rooted my Hero !
Now regarding the new ROM I have downloaded the Zip file do I just copy the whole thing onto my phones sd card? If so where into the Nandroid folder?
Or do I run it using CMD from my laptop and if so know of any guides on how?
Thanks again, muchly appreciated
MB
Easiest way is you mount your phone to pc via usb, and just drop the zip file onto the root of your sdcard. Do not place the zip file anywhere else, or in any folder, just in the sdcard itself. Remount the phone, reboot into recovery, and select flash zip. Your rom should be in there to flash.
A wise man once said, "You've taken your first step into a larger world."
So happy you guys were nice with helping him. I'm finally making my switch to Android (in 3.5hrs). I can't wait to get home and root and figure it all out. Seems a TAD more difficult than it was with WinMo. There's SOOOOOO much info here, it's difficult to figure out WHERE start. But this thread helped at least figure out WHICH guide to follow initially.
Hi,
I read everything i could find and I still can't get anything to work properly on the phone.
Is there even a milestone wiki so i know which version my phone is?
I got the open recovery thing to work once, but i can't get it to work again, it keeps saying I have a cache error. what do i do?
also, when I install app2card, it totally ruins my phone, is that app meant for my phone?
I tried to install app2sd, but it keeps saying busy box permission failed something.
I got my phone thru ebay, how can i check the region?
I just know I have an unbranded milestone.
I google all these questions and nothing helpful comes up.
Can somone please tell me how to get into recover again?
Do i need to reflash it?
I only got into it once and installed the zip.
but when i try to run the zip again, i get an error.
If you have nandroid file in your sdcard, you can copy and paste (anything that is important to you) to your PC.
1. Take out your sdcard and pluck it to your PC if your Milestone cannot switch ON
2. Format your sdcard via PC
3. Extract G.O.T OpenRecovery v2.00 or Androidiani OpenRecovery 3.3 to the root of
your sdcard. (you'll see OpenRecovery folder and update.zip) Put the sdcard to your
Milestone and enter bootloader.(Press and hold volume up+camera key & power ON)
4. Open RSDlite and connect to your Milestone. Flash sbf to your Milestone, stock ROM
or 2.2.1 G.O.T beta version
Guide -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696845
5. Your Milestone will be switch ON after flashing sbf is done. Turn it OFF and enter
into recovery. Press X button and power ON. Once you see the triangle and '!',
press volume up and camera key.
6. You'll see Recovery 2e, all letters in blue, select update and the rest is your choice.
You can nandroid backup if your Milestone works as before and restore your previous nandroid that you copy to your PC.
Yes i did that the first time and it worked.
but how can i get into it again to make a backup?
thanks
You mean you still can't get into the recovery mode after formatting your sdcard? Even with the button combination:
PRESS AND HOLD 'X' AND POWER ON THE PHONE, LET GO ONLY AFTER YOU SEE THE TRIANGLE AND '!' MARK ???
I get to the triangle.
and it get to the recover menu. but when i press install the zip again.
an error message pops up.
do i need to redo step 3 and 4 everytime i want to go into recovery menu?
what open recovery u r using? GOT or androidiani?
if its GOT then try switchin to androidiani to check if the problem presist, vice versa.
report back here if there is any improvement.
one more question:
when u enter the bootloader menu (pressing the up dpad and power key) wat bootloader version it states there?
Thanks
I'll try it out tonight been a bit busy this week.
does Flash sbf do anything to my system?
for example, will i need to reflash my current rom after doing Flash sbf?
I know for the x10 mini pro, after doing update.zip i will need to reflash the rom.
is it the same for milestone?
I still can't get it to work.
here are my steps.
My phone is already rooted.
and I already flashed the Recovery-Only SBF when i installed the new rom. (do i need to redo this step? Maybe I'm using an outdated version?)
Can someone link me to the file if there is a better one, all the links are dead.
I am using this version: vulnerable_recovery_only_RAMDLD90_78
I downloaded this:
http://groupoften.wordpress.com/2010/10/22/new-g-o-t-openrecovery-v2-01-launched/
I put the files on the root of my SD:
OpenRecovery
OpenRecovery-CFG (do i need this?)
update.zip
I press the Up dpad and power, I get the triangle thing.
I press the install.zip and still cache error?
E:can't open /ache/recovery/command
I don't get what the readme in the GOT is telling me to do.
it says:
create a folder in /OpenRecovery/recoveries ( for example "My_OR_MOD" i don't use space in folder name, to avoid problems)
does that mean I make a copy of the "openrecovery" folder and put it back inside the "openrecovery" folder? that means every thing will be duplicated? is this correct?
thanks
I would try the androidiani, but i can not find the english guide.
Edit:
just tried androidiani, and I'm still getting E:can't open /ache/recovery/command
Hi there.
I thought i'd try and get the 4.4 update for my Xperia SP as it was lagging a lot and causing me a lot of headache. So spent most of the day trying to figure out how to download CyanogenMod.. and i've got up to Now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>... I don't even know how to do that as I'm not techy at all
Was i supposed to send the package to the sd card before doing all this process? I wiped the data rom thing but had backed it up onto SD card before doing that. I restored it so I could try and move the package from the computer to my SD card but my phone just stays on a black screen
Have I broken my phone? Someone please help me as frustrated is an understatement right now. Not to mention crying like a little baby.....
Thanks in advance.
You must connect your sd card to pc through recovery or sd adaptor ( if your phone isn't booting), and extract kernel (boot.img) from the rom zip to your pc and flash the kernel (boot.img) with flashtool on fastboot mode, then enter on recovery and flash the rom zip

Your phone is broken. Now you can throw it away and hope for the best.
Okay I was kidding!
To get your phone back, you may need to at least know how to use a Flashtool. But don't worry I'll point out one by one.. I recommend viewing this post on a desktop browser, as Tapatalk does not show nested [ hide ] correctly.
The prerequisites are a Williams Kernel v7 (Direct DL link) and Flashtool and a custom ROM's .zip of your choice.
Put the custom ROM zip into your SD card by any means possible. Or you may use a OTG cable to connect to a flash drive.
Install flashtool
Execute the drivers installer located within "drivers" folder inside Flashtool's install directory (default C:\Flashtool\drivers)
Tick "flashmode drivers", "fastboot drivers" and lastly scroll down a little bit, find "Common drivers for Viskan board" and tick that as well. Finish the installation
Open flashtool. Make sure you ran it as an administrator to avoid conflicts.
Hit the lightning icon
Choose fastboot mode
Hit "Select kernel to flash"
Navigate to and select the downloaded kernel earlier. You may unable to see your kernel. Please change the file type from "*.sin" to "*.elf".
Continue. This will ask you to connect your XSP in fastboot mode. To do so, make sure your phone is turned off completely, hold volume rocker up and connect it to your computer. Once the LED bar lights blue, you may release the volume rocker.
Flashing process will run. It is important not to interrupt the process!
Once complete, remove the cable from your phone and turn it on.
Hit volume up when the lights blink to get into CWM recovery
From another guide:
3) Flashing the custom ROM
You can navigate in CWM by using the volume and power keys or by swiping the screen up, right, down, left.
NOTE: Please understand methods are vary for different ROMs. Please prioritise steps provided in a custom ROM thread. This guide however, can be regarded as a "logic" for you to flash such custom ROM.
Wipe everything you can.
WARNING: Please be careful to not wipe the /boot.
go to "Mounts and storage"
Format /system
Format /data
Format /cache
Go back to main menu
Get into "Advanced" > "Clear Dalvik Cache" (this is quite optional)
Go back to main menu
Attempt "Wipe data/factory reset"
Flash the custom ROM zip you've downloaded.
Go to "Install zip"
Choose "Choose zip from /storage/sdcard1" (I am assuming you've put the zip into your SD card)
Navigate to the zip you've copied, and select it
Choose "yes"
Flash gapps. The flashing process is similar to how you flashed the custom ROM zip based on the steps above.
Reboot the phone
You now have your preferred custom ROM installed! Congratulations! Set up your phone as usual now.
Restore your applications backup if you wish to have your apps back.
Your steps end here.

Here is my set of instructions to gain TWRP and Root on the Tab A (WIFI) SM-P580, SM-T580, and SM-P585.
WARNING Flashing a custom recovery to your device will trip the Knox warranty bit on your phone. Check with your mobile provider to see if they will still cover warranty on Knox bit triggered devices. If you understand this risk, continue on. You generally don't have to worry, as it's incredibly hard to brick a Samsung device, and physical damage warranties should be exempt from Knox triggering. [credit: jcadduono]

f. ashxy's Dm-verity and force encryption disabler https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24591000424951049
2. PREPERATION
a. While running your tablet in Android, go to Settings -> About device. Tap 7 times on Build number to enable Developer options. [credit: jcadduono]
b. Now go to Settings -> Developer options. (above About device). You need to enable OEM unlock, otherwise you might end up with boot problems or be unable to flash later on. Do not ever turn off Developer Options or OEM unlock. Doing so will cause your device to refuse to boot and require a full factory restore. [credit: jcadduono]
c. Turn off your tablet.
d. Get a micro SD card
e. Copy SuperSU and dm-verity script onto microSD card
f. Install microSD card into Tablet
g. Install Samsung USB Drivers on Windows machine
h. Unzip ODIN (1a) and Original firmware (1c) on your Windows computer
i. While tablet is off, plug in usb cable between tablet and Windows computer
3. REFLASH ORIGINAL FIRMWARE (Optional)
a. Enter Download mode, press and hold Home, Down Vol, and Power until you see the Warning screen of the downloader mode. Press Vol up to continue
b. Open up ODIN, confirm that ODIN can see your tablet, click AP button on Odin. In popup, select AP_[blah blah].tar.md5 (whatever AP file you downloaded in step 1c). After selecting the file, Odin will check the signature of the file you downloaded and appear to freeze up. Let it finish, and it will report: <OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully.. <OSM> Leave CS..
c. Then click Start. The screen of the tablet should show a progress bar as your tablet is being restored to its original firmware.
d. At this point, you need to let the tablet reboot into Android. If ODIN doesn't do this itself, reboot into to download mode (home, vol down, power), then select Vol down to reboot. After a while, you will be greeted with the Welcome screen where you can select your language.
e. Power off the tablet using the power button
4. FLASH TWRP
a. Enter Download mode (press and hold Home, Down Vol, and Power) until you see the Warning screen of the downloader mode. Press Vol up to continue
b. (Re) Open up ODIN, confirm that ODIN can see your tablet,
c. Important We do not want the tablet to automatically reboot after installing TWRP. If the tablet does reboot into Android before completing the steps in Section 4 and 5, there is a good chance the stock recovery will overwrite TWRP. So click the Options tab on the left and deselect Auto Reboot. After doing that, click the Log tab so you can monitor progress
d. Click AP button on Odin. In popup, select twrp-[blah blah].img.tar (downloaded in step 1d), click Start. You will see the progress bar on your tablet. Watch the log window of Odin and wait for the message "<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)"
5. ENTER TWRP AND CONFIGURE
a. At this point, from the last section, you should still be in Download mode on the tablet. It is important that, after flashing TWRP, to go straight to TWRP without letting the Android System reboot. To do this, Hold [Volume Down] + [Home] + [Power] to get out of Download mode and immediately swap to [Volume Up] (while still holding [Home] + [Power]) when the screen blanks. [credit: jcadduono]
b. In a few secs, you will see the TWRP first screen, you can let go of all the buttons.
c. If you don't see then TWRP boot splash try again from the start of 4. FLASH TWRP.
d. Swipe to Allow Modifications. (For some reason, TWRP has some issues with the touchscreen for some tablets. If you experience this, expect to make several swipes or taps until it properly registers. You have succeeded when you see the classic 8-button main screen of TWRP. Indeed, throughout your use of TWRP, expect that touches will often not properly register, and just keep trying until it does.)
e. Click Wipe then Format Data (do not just Wipe data), type yes and let it complete. (It is also a good practice, though not always necessary, to Wipe the Cache and Dalvik Cache whenever you make changes to the system. They are always rebuilt as needed. Now is as good a time as any.) Then click back until you get to the 8-button main screen of TWRP.
f. Click the Mount button. Select Storage button, and confirm that the Internal Storage shows non-zero MB. If it is, you know that the /data partition is now mounted properly. However, since we put the needed scripts on the microSD, go ahead and select Micro SD Card as our storage. Click Back until you are back at the 8-button main screen.
g. Click the Install button, install the SuperSU zip file you downloaded in step 1e and copied to your microSD. It will finish and say Updating partition details… …done. Click Back to get back to the install screen (do not reboot yet).
h. Install the no-verity zip file from step 1f. When it completes, you can press the Reboot System button and let your tablet reboot into Android. You can also disconnect the usb cable connecting the tablet from the computer. The tablet may reboot itself once or twice, let it do its thing, and eventually you will see the Samsung Welcome! Screen, where you can select your language.
6. CONFIRM DATA ACCESS IN TWRP
a. Before going into configuring your tablet, go ahead and turn off the tablet and re-enter TWRP (Home, Vol up, Power).
b. *Important* Since you will not be changing your system partition, this time, when you get to the "Keep System Read only?" screen, click the Keep Read Only button.
c. In the 8-button screen of TWRP, click Mount, click Select Storage. Confirm that the Internal Storage is greater than zero MB. If it is, congratulations, you have TWRP installed with /data mounted. At this point, you might want do a backup. If you want your TWRP backup to be on your microSD card, select it now while still in the Select Storage dialog.
d. Do a backup.
e. Reboot to System
7. FUTURE USE OF TWRP
a. Unless you are planning to make changes to the System, continue to choose the Read Only System when you return to TWRP. If you need to make changes to System, e.g. flash a new ROM, go back to Step 5 and install the ROM just before Step 5g
8. Click the Thanks button if my guide helped you.

Thank You!!!
having trouble with the SM-T580/XAR link
any alternative links ? and what is the difference between the to files under that link ?
I've read on other threads that Google FRP (factory reset protection) may cause boot loops when rooting if you've not disabled it, but I can't find a definitive answers on exactly how you disable on the Tab A.
Anyone have the answer?

Make sure you disable any ad blockers in your browser and you sold get to the free (slow) download. Different files are for various regions providing language and keyboard locale settings.
Fantastic write up. Worked flawlessly on a brand new SM-P580.
Only thing to add: After finishing all the steps and the tablet is booted, at first launch of SuperSU, it will ask you to disable Knox. If you say OK, the process will likely will hang. So press OK and let SuperSU try. If it hangs for more than 30 seconds, reboot the tab, go back into SuperSU, select OK when asked again, and it should successfully disable Knox.
Also, I did not re-flash the original firmware (since this was a new tablet).
Any work on SM-T587P being done? Us Sprint users are chomping at the bit, lol.....
Does anyone know if or when Lineage OS (official or unofficial) may come to the T580?
Negative On Sprint

I am unable to get this working on the T587P, Sprint Varient. I can flash the LTE version of it (For the T580) but it will not successfully boot to recovery, instead getting stuck on "Recovery Booting" and then showing an odd modified download menu (oddly, I can still flash things through this broken recovery).
Any workaround to root the device without modifying the Knox counter ? It's very hard to choose between voiding the warranty or standing with the ads!

In short, no. Any custom recovery will trip the Knox counter, and as this is required to obtain root, you can't get root without tripping the counter.

I agree with Dingo. As mentioned in the Warning on the first post, because of Odin, it is pretty hard to brick these devices; you can always flash a stock image (assuming you have one for your exact make and model) to bring your device back from the grave. If you think it is likely that you will seek support from your phone company, ask them if they can provide support to phones with knox tripped. If instead, you seek your support from XDA, then a tripped Knox is kinda the ritual of initiation. Welcome to the club!
I can get to point 5f.

However, I can't mount the SD card. Clicking on it doesn't do anything. Any suggestions? I checked if the card could be read before installing TWRP and the SU-file was there.

Are you able to boot into Android, and if so, are you able to see the contents of the SD card using the file browser?

Yes, it's all accessible through Android. But of course, once I start up Android after step 5f I lose TWRP and have to start over again.
Yippee! All I had to do was format the sd card and now everything works fine! Thanks for the help and a great guide.

Hey man ! French friend here !
I just had a misadventure with my phone yesterday (you can read about it in one of the recent topics) and had to reinstall the whole OS. Actually, it's not as tricky as you might think it is. I assume you already have the b130 zip file (getting the ROM was the hardest part in my case) ?
If you do, then connect your phone to your computer and allow file sharing. Now extract the archive content to your phone's internal storage. Among the files is one named "update.app". You have to cut/paste it in a folder named "dload", which you'll have to create in your internal storage.
With that done, power off your phone and turn it one again by pressing simultaneously the volume up, down and power buttons. The B130 version should be installing and after a reboot, you'll be good to go.
Note that this procedure will wipe out all the data in your internal storage. Don't be a fool like me and back up everything you want to keep. Your bootloader will be locked again as well and obviously, the custom recovery and all apps - including Super su and Xposed - will be gone. Your phone will be brand as new.
Come back to me if you need anything.
