[Q] Recently bought "unlocked" Moto X

And it appears to be a Verizon moto X with towel Pie installed on it. So technically unlocked but I'm a little dubious as to whether I should just return this phone.
I didn't know what towel pie was at the time and didn't know the phone wasn't actually unlocked. The guy I bought it from said that verizon moto X phones were just naturally unlocked. I didn't really find that credible at the time but assumed the phone was nonetheless unlocked now.
After playing with the phone, I find that its not actually fully unlocked but rather has this program running on it that fights the Verizon firmware to effectively make it unlocked.
Here is what I want. I want this permanently rooted without any program running in the background to reroot the phone every time. And I want all the verizon logos off my login screens etc. Is there some sort of clean rom I can write over this thing that just has it unlocked?
I am not using Verizon as a carrier.
What do you think guys. Did I get scammed? I paid 400 USD for this phone. Prompt reply would be appreciated since I think I can still return it if I'm quick about it.

HAHA. I think there was some mis-communication there.
OK: There are 2 types of "unlocked":
1. SIM-Unlocked: Verizon phones ARE "naturally" SIM-Unlocked, and you can use them on any GSM carrier.
2. Bootloader-Unlocked: ALL Verizon phones (aside from the Developer Edition), can NOT have their bootloader's unlocked. Verizon forbids motoorola from allowing you to unlock your bootloader. "Towel Pie Root" doesn't even come close to the functionality of an unlocked bootloader -- there's simply no comparison. There is absolutely NO WAY to unlock your bootloader, except for one possibility.

It will cost you money -- but if he doesn't have your code you get refunded. If you DO get a code, your bootloader will be permanently unlocked, and for all essence, it will be an unofficial "Developer Edition".
And finally -- in my opinion, $400 is QUITE excessive for what is really just a standard run-of-the-mill Verizion Moto X, with nothing special about it at all. The average selling price is currently $220 on swappa.com
If it were ME, I'd return it and find a bootloader-unlocked VZW Moto X, or the Verizon DEVELOPER edition Moto X.
Just be careful!!! Many Moto X's on swappa say that they are "unlocked", but this refers to SIM-UNLOCKED. Make sure it -explicitly- says "BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED".

EDIT: Now that I see that you are NOT using verizon as your carrier, I would suggest that you buy an XT1053 instead.
The XT1053 has NO carrier branding, and it can be bootloader-unlocked FREE, direct from Motorola's website.
The price is slightly more than the VZW version - XT1053's are currently averaging $260 on swappa. They are ALL Sim-Unlocked, and bootloader-unlockable.
That's FAR less than the $400 you paid......

the sale is still going on on Motorola's website $324.99 brand new Dev Edition unlocked bootloader

A lot of my issue here is that I'm under some time pressure. My old phone broke and I really just need something to replace it now. So i got what i could get in a short amount of time.
That said, I'm only willing to put up with so much crap. I don't mind over paying a bit. I do mind not getting what I want.
Now, I do believe this is the developer edition. It gives me access to developer tools in the settings and the phone info information seemed to be what developer editions say. Is there a way I can confirm this?
And if it is a Verizon developer edition Moto X, can I properly root it and clean all this verizon garbage off my phone? It seemed like you suggested that if this were a Verizon developer edition Moto X I could still root it?
Please let me know. I'll eat the price hike as a convenience charge but I really can't put up with having it permanently crippled by Verizon.

Enabling "Developer Options" can be done on any phone. Once again, this also has absolutely nothing to do with rooting or unlocking the bootloader. If it WERE the dev edition, the previous owner would have no reason, whatsoever to install TowelPieRoot. That's just silly to use an "exploit" on a phone with an unlocked bootloader.
TowelPieRoot DOES allow you to root the phone - but that will disappear when you update to 4.4.4 -- the new update patches the exploit used by TPR. After this, it will be permanently un-rootable unless you can unlock the BL.
You are completely out-of-luck, sir. Unless you want to roll the dice and spend another $45 in hopes that the "chinaman" might have an unlock code for you. I gave you the link in my first reply to you.

I don't think you are understanding.....
There is no such thing as "rooting the bootloader".
Your bootloader is either unlocked, or it isn't.
There are some "Exploits" that the exploited vulnerabilities in android and allowed you to "root" or "disable write protection", but none of them are permanent solutions. Since they are "Exploits", they can be patched by future updates. They don't "root the bootloader" - they "root the android OS".
ALL exploits, including the one you have linked above HAVE BEEN PATCHED. The only working exploit is TowelPieRoot -- but it does NOT disable write protection. It isn't very useful, and it is not permanent. As I previously told you, once you update to 4.4.4 your phone will be PERMANENTLY un-rootable. Period.
The only way to gain "permanent root and write-protection disable" is to unlock the bootloader. You can NOT unlock the bootloader on a VZW device. Period. Not unless it is a Dev Edition, OR you are able to obtain a bootloader unlock-code from the china middleman that I linked you to before.
There are NO EXCEPTIONS. As I already told you, you are 100% out-of-luck, UNLESS your phone has a black front and woven white back, OR you are able to unlock through the middleman at a cost of $45. There is NO OTHER WAY. None.
Please trust me - I know what I'm talking about 100%. I've only given you the facts. Now you must choose what to do with these facts.

if you can get your money back get your money back moto will FedEx you the brand new dev edition for $324.99 you will have it in 3 or 4 days probably until then get on Craigslist buy a hundred dollar droid to use until then and sell it afterwords

well im gonna order the new verizon developer edition for 324.99 than and unlock the bootloader and wipe all the verizon crap off it and permanently root it

A couple of questions I haven't seen asked...
On the phone go to App Drawer -> Settings -> About phone... What is listed as the SYSTEM VERSION.
Next, what does the BACK of the phone look like or say? Does it have the Verizon logo on it? Does it have the words Developer Edition on the back? Does it have SMALL HARD TO READ Fine print at the bottom that says a model number? Or did it come with the original box that has the IMEI and Model on it? (the model would be XT1060, XT1053, XT1058, etc)
What carrier are you intending to use it with?
Power off the phone, then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously NOTE: you may need to have the USB cable disconnected first. This will bring you into the AP Fastboot Flash Mode screen (aka bootloader or fastboot mode). It will say DEVICE IS... unlocked or locked. Which is it?
I am asking these questions to know 1. What model X you have, 2. if it is bootloader unlocked, and 3 what rom version is on there.
That will help us guide you further.
@samwathegreat already did a great job explaining Boot Loader Unlock vs SIM Unlock. I've got a long and deeper explaination on bootloader unlocking and effects on rooting at -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-Locked.html It does need to be updated to cover rooting on 4.4.4 with a LOCKED bootloader is not possible.
In short, if your answers to my questions reveal you have a Verizon X that is not a developer edition phone, then the only way to unlock the bootloader is if you can buy a code from the China Middle Man. Unlocking the bootloader is essential these days if you want a full and working ROOT solution.
If you have a Verizon X that you are trying to use on T-Mobile, or ATT, then you might be OK as long as you don't need/want to root it, and are fine with running the stock Verizon ROM. You just might have some limits too (like not be being able to do Voice and LTE data at the same time)
Oh, but to get rid of some of the Verizon bloat, you will need to root it and delete the APK's which would impact future OTAs, or use something like Titanium Backup to freeze them. Both options need you to be rooted.

If you really want an X, Let us know what carrier, and I would still recommend a Dev Edition, either the GSM or the VZW version depending on your carrier, especially while they stay on sale for $325.99. Any non-contract phone you can get is going to be near that cost, or above.

[Q] VZW Moto X 1060 -- no hackee?

I liked Cyan on my old Droid X but it looks like from a quick glance at the Guides and Tips page that I won't be able to even do a Clockwork Recovery let alone a new modded OS like Cyanogenmod.
Did I read that right? Assuming so, is there anything evil I can do to this phone?

You are on Verizon, so your bootloader can't be unlocked at the Moto site. You can try Sunshine for $25. That's your only hope.

Thx. How odd they'd lock it then charge $25 to unlock it-- that seems so Apple-esque. I bought this phone used, so I'm unlikely to throw much more money at it, but it's nice to have the option.

I think you misunderstand. The $25 unlock is a third-party exploit developed by JCase and a number of other talented developers. If you are on VZW, that is the only way to unlock, but it is far from official. Plus, it rarely works on 4.4.4 for the Moto X. I think most people would be ok if VZW offered a reasonable priced paid unlock, but I doubt we ever see that.

What did you expect after buying a locked phone on Verizon? If you value rooting, look into buying phones with easily unlockable bootloaders. Folks are lucky to have sunshine as it is

I didn't research it much, but I was a little confuzzled by a webpage that led me to think I could (A person needs 10 posts to insert a link?). I was able to put Cyan on my VZW Droid X, e.g.

A little history...
The Verizon XT1060 has always shipped with a locked bootloader. This prevents flashing ROMs or Parts (like custom recovery) from being flashed to the phone. Only Roms signed by Moto and intended for that model and carrier can be flashed.
A Developer Edition For Verizon Moto X was available from Moto's web site only. For that device, Moto would give out the bootloader unlock code. Once unlocked, you could flash 3rd party roms and parts. With the Dev Edition, you did not void your warranty while doing this.
Verizon stores and Moto's Moto Maker web site also sold the X for Verizon, but for these not Developer Editions, you could NOT get the BootLoader Unlock code.
Later, someone was able to gain access to a database of IMEI numbers and their BootLoader Unlock codes, even for Verizon Non-Dev Editions and started selling them via a China web site, and later Middle Man. While it went away for a little over a month, it later came back. It has recently shut down again.
JCASE and others had found a vulnerability they could exploit to unlock the bootloader, no unlock code needed. Its called Sunshine. But it only works on phones which haven't even been upgraded to 4.4.4.
So depending on what you read, it could be "dated" and written at a time where you could have purchased the bootloader unlock code from the China Website or Middleman.

XT1774 - Verizon Variant - Subsidy unlock does NOT enable bootloader unlocking

Hey y'all, Verizon Moto E4 Plus (XT1774) owner here. I've seen a couple posts on XDA and other Android forums about bootloader unlocking for Verizon-specific Moto devices relating to subsidy (SIM) unlocking.
As we all know, the XT1774's bootloader is locked, there is no way around that yet. I have seen people mention that subsidy unlocking allowed their bootloader to be unlocked, but from my testing that is not true.
I tried an H20-Wireless sim, and an US Cellular sim; obviously I also got an unlock code. Neither of the sims changed my get_unlock_data, so neither would unlock the bootloader.
Just wanted to disprove any of these claims so no one wastes their time. Thanks.

You are correct. If unlocking your bootloader to customize the device is the goal, you need to steer clear of any Verizon branded devices. ATT, Sprint and a few others will also not allow bootloaders to be unlocked.
I have found that to be safe, purchase the device straight from Motorola as an unlocked device (Any US carrier/international) is the way to go. You will not get a discount like you do when purchasing through a carrier or big store name like Walmart but you will get a device that allows for bootloader unlocking.

I don't know about ATT, but all the Sprint/boost/virgin mobile devices ARE unlockable. It's only the Verizon variant that isn't. This is how it's been for some time.

I agree, but lately, Sprint has stopped support for bootloader unlocking. I read this directly from there site. It may be a little while tool it trickles down to current production devices but beware. And I am taking about Sprint Branded devices, and not devices you bring in on your own.

Thanks for the heads-up. I guess I'll have to start buying retail models. A little more $, but I'm very tired of the cdma data problems on custom ROMs every time there's a new Android version or new device anyway.

I hear ya. Where I live Verizon is there only network that is any good/dependable. As much as I despise BigRed, I have to use it. If I had my way I would go Boost Mobile or any other GSM network carrier. That would open up the doors for my YouTube channel and allow me to test more devices the right way and not just in WiFi. I love my OnePlus5 but can only use it with WiFi. So I can't fully enjoy it. But it would in GSM.

They do make a device that is unlocked for the US Big 4 carriers and that's what I bought. Subsidy unlock to my knowledge does not bootloader unlock your device. If I see a really good Rom come out, I'll look at it, but Motorola did a really terrific job keeping what they did to it "light". At the price I paid for it ($159.99); I might buy another one and store it, though I have read a few threads that indicate that Motorola won't update the device to Oreo.

I see if you got your device from Walmart. It will would be able to remove the bootloader? Do I have have to get Verizon to take the lock off? Or has anyone been able to take the bootloader off of Walmart prepaid Verizon xt1774? This will be my first build. I could use all the advice and help! Thanks

You cannot unlock the bootloader of the XT1774. No ifs, and, nor buts.

just got new one today and was gonna to use xposed-after do some reading...smh, should have read before buying to make sure all is set to unlock and flash

Should I return the ATT version?

I am junior here at XDA and am aware of the protocols for posting (search, search, search before asking), My query doesn't match anything I looked for because it is a combo of different things. Hence, this new thread
a) I've bought an ATT G020J on Ebay that will work with Cricket (that's what the listing said) and I am on Tmob. It is without contract, so I am assuming it is unlockable. Has anyone here tried crossflashing IMG files previously between these two exact carriers; is that even poss?
b) In cue, anyone care to share experience with ATT folks unlocking P4XL specifically, for other carriers?
b) Did October update/patch ruin face unlock for most or only few?
I will return or keep the item based on your generous/helpful replies.
Once again, I apologize before hand if I missed any existing thread that might have alluded to these three issues.

Can I ask why you didn't just buy the correct carrier specific Pixel? Also, buying an unlocked version avoids all of this experimentation. Prices are down right now and you can get an unlocked Pixel for not much more than a carrier locked version.
As far as your question, It's not going to work by your logic. Your not going to be able to flash anything that will carrier unlock or switch the phone, otherwise everyone would do it and every Pixel would be unlockable (which they aren't)
My suggestion is return the phone and buy an unlocked Pixel.
October patch didn't harm my face unlock in any way. I haven't Heard any widespread issues regarding have unlock and the October patch.

The phone will likely come both carrier locked and bootloader locked. There are quite a few threads on XDA about carrier locked phones. Hopefully you can return and get your money back. Best of luck.

Why?-- Bands are exactly the same across ALL variants here in the US, other than carrier-locked OEM pickle. So, once it is out of contract, the question was meant to see if anyone has had experience requesting and getting unlock code from the orange carrier.

(You are right, in that I could have bought the unlocked version. Not sure about you but I pay outright but for previous years' flagships, but only when they are in the $400 range, which is the most I can afford to cough out at once. I don't like doing installments unless they be for a car or house because that's just me)
Sammy's galaxies, albeit Exynos not SD, are often flashed across each other, despite the company's stranglehold on their version of Android. Google being the 'truer' open sourced company, my idea was if, again, anyone had done boot image flashing across different models but once out of contract and unlocked
Thank you for the last bit as well. There was a Reddit thread complaining how the security patch had ruined the face unlock/sensor. But your statement is assuring.

okay, thank youI shall look into it. I have a thirty day return window, so if nothing, I can return it within few days of researching to get it unlocked. The unit is assuredly out of contract for sure even if it is meant for AT&T network.

"Out of contract" doesn't mean anything. The market is flooded with locked phones for sale cheap. Could be stolen, could be broken contract, could be blacklisted, etc. Because it is carrier locked you *will have to* go through AT&T to get it unlocked. If the seller was legit, in good standing with AT&T and had simply upgraded to a new phone they could have easily had AT&T unlock it for free OTA and it would have been more valuable/marketable. There are also several threads here on XDA that will give you some insight on trying to get an AT&T phone carrier unlocked. I wish you the best of luck, but you are in for an uphill battle.

Thank you for the reminder. Yes, interestingly, seller should have been able to unlock it if it were out of contract and then sell. Let's see where I end up. I shall update the information here once I go through the grind.

THIS THREAD does a pretty good job of explaining it. If you are able to get AT&T to carrier unlock your phone, you can then unlock the bootloader too, if you wish. Only AT&T can whitelist the IMEI on the AT&T variant. @sdg1980

Thank you so much for that! I found that as well prior to posting this original thread. Seemed to be a mixed bag for commenting members. Persistence paid off for some, even within the contract period. I am chalking that up to luck and probably ill-informed techs who screwed their own employer. Ironically, @jac0b was unsuccessful in requesting unlock from AT&T. I have posed him a question about whether his device was paid off or not when he requested or had any particular hurdle unique to his case. Third party or ATT...,,,neither will unlock at any cost until the device is paid off, bad ESN, prepaid device within two month window, and some more stipulations I can't remember. They are listed on the vendors' websites.

A question about tmobile unlocking

Hi guys
I recently bought a used 4xl off ebay that I want to install grapheneos on. I bought the tmobile variant to save some money, as I assumed as long as it wasnt the verizon variant the bootloader would be unlockable.
I've called 3 different tmobile support techs, and reached out to the @tmobilehelp twitter account, all of whom are saying the past owner has to call to have the phone sim unlocked. Is there a way to get the device unlocked without ever being a tmobile customer? I didn't originally have intentions to put a sim in the phone at all, but if i have to, i will.
What are my options to getting the bootloader/sim unlocked? Can I become a tmobile connect customer to get the phone on the network, and then request an unlock as i'd be the current owner of the phone?

The past owner lost his phone or it was stolen while still under contract (hasn't been paid off), and it was sold on ebay. Pretty much the only option you have is to try and get your money back from the ebay vendor selling stolen phones. Have you contacted them already and what was their response? As for your last question about becoming a TMo customer with a stolen TMo phone, I guess you forgot to ask that when you talked with the 3 support techs? If you are lucky your IMEI is not blacklisted already and it is capable of being activated.

I have a similar problem. Mine is from AT&T. The only thing you should know is if it is blacklisted or not.
If it is you may run into other problems!
I am still researching how to unlock the bootloader. I have already learned a lot of things but still trying... To get the phone unlocked I think the best way is to flash original firmware that comes with unlocked models(you can download it directly from google here )
Now, as the bootloader is locked, you can't just flash it directly as the bootloader won't allow you to flash things to certain partitions(like boot partition⛔️). I will let a pic of what you get, even if you use the force attribute.
The case is that Qualcomm chipsets have and especial mode called EDL.
With this mode you can flash any firmware, even if the bootloader is locked.
This is because the EDL is like the main bootloader, and then there is the 2 bootloader, which is the one is locked(See pic).
Concluding, what I am trying to do is flash the not locked firmware through the PBL(which you access through EDL mode, to get there just run "fastboot reboot edl" without quotes).
The problem is that you need some strange files, which appear to be very rare. They have an .mbn or .hex extension and I didn't find them yet. They are supposed to be inside the firmware, but I didn't find them yet.
When I finally find it, I am going to publish a full guide on how to unlock any firmware, even if it is from Verizon.
I already have understood how to unlock the phone to work with any SIM, mine despite being locked to AT&T it's working fine with my Vodafone SIM. Here is the link to my post

But I had a OnePlus 6t prior to my Pixel 4XL and we had a T-Mobile to global conversion thread that used a tool that made our T-Mobile OnePlus 6t/6 a global model. I'll go grab the link to the thread and paste it here. I know OnePlus and Pixel are two completely different devices but what the hell. Hopefully it may help...

That is more less what your aim is here in quite sure... Make your Pixel 4XL T-Mobile an unlocked model. It would seem like there would be some way to do it, unless whatever the OnePlus developers did to have the conversion work is a no go because of how the two devices are made. I'm not sure as I have not dug deep in to this just figured I'd share. When I read your post this is the first thing that came to my mind. I hope you get it resolved. All else fails sell the T-Mobile model and try and get a Google model Factory unlocked. They have come down even more now I'm pricing.. Anyway good luck man.
