Review for the MONTAR QI Car Holder with wireless charging - Galaxy Note5 Accessories

Let me start off first by saying thank you to the wonderful people over at winnergear.com who provided me this product free of charge. Any thoughts on the product are mine, if a product sucks it sucks.
So to start it came packaged nicely and included everything you need to get started. The clip that holds your phone is nice and sturdy and at no time was I worried that my Note 5 would fall while driving. The suction on the base of the holster is very strong plus it also has an adhesive on it as well, it was actually a struggle to remove it off of my windshield lol. After a few days of use I have nothing but good things to say about this product, but 1 thing that I had an issue with is no fault of the product but mine because I unhooked my front 12V accessory charging port to hardwire my Garmin GPS unit to and my other 12V accessory outlet is in my center console which is to far away to use the wireless charging that this unit offers. It can be purchased here http://winnergear.com/product/montar-air-qi-car-mount/

Looking for a car charger for the x1.

I live in the UK and have been to Carphone warehouse, Phones 4 U, The o2 store (where I got the phone from) and they all redirected me to each of the other shops...?!?!?
Now I've read other posts about mixing chargers from different manufacturers, so i'm not too keen on buying a car charger made for a different make and model phone...
So...can anyone point me in the right direction?
just get any car charger with a usb connector.
I use the one that came with my TomTom.
I use the BlackBerry car charger.. it works fine..
My car has a USB socket, just plugged in any normal mini-USB worked too
can someone recommend a car charger and a holder for the x1 ?!
Brodit has actually made a nice custom fit holder for the X1. But I just find it too expensive for a piece of molded plastic at about 40$ for the holder alone. If you factor in the cost for the actual car mounting kit and the charger it ends up costing about 80$ or more.
I went the cheap route and ordered a custom fit cradle through ebay from Hongkong for only 15$ and a generic USB car charger for about 7$ incl. shipping.
If there is any interest, I will report back once I receive the holder.
I've had the Brodit cradle and mount in my car for the last couple of weeks and I'm very happy with it; good solid build quality and easy to fit too.

i second that, got an old balckberry charger and it does the job perfectly.
I use a garmin charger, it sits at a right angle though and the wire comes out the front of the screen kind of
I use a Motorola charger that came with my old V3i, however the screen is always on while charging in the car, just like the Moto
You guys are talking CRADLES, but if it's just a CHARGER you're asking about... this is all you need

$1.02.
Plus a USB cable, you're set. I've got one, works fine. I got extra USB cables and USB wall chargers from these guys too, verrrry cheap.

I have the brodit and it is worth the money, very good quality. I was not happy about paying for the mounting kit either though, especially as i want to swap it between 3 different cars. What I did was attach it to a metal angle bracket I had lying around - That fits between the vent on my old mitsubishi, and in between bits of trim on a bmw - you just have to be a bit inventive. You can get ideas for mounting from brodits web site anyway, most they just look like bent bits of metal anyway
You can use the Motorola V2 Charger
i just bought a USB charger via ebay for the glorious amount of 1€ (+2.80 packaging).
it even charges the Phone when i use it with my Motorcycle
it works ... what else can i say?
so why pay 30 bucks when u can have it so cheap?

Xperia Z1 Car Dock?

Anyone heard anything about an official car dock?
First Sony phone for ages and I'm not sure if Sony tend to sell phone car docks. Suspect the magnetic charging pins are for power only - my old Galaxy Nexus had 3 pins, one of which is for data.
Sony has actually produced a fair few accessories this time around (some being universal, which is also a good thing).
However the car holder is just that - a holder. To me that seems rather stupid, as if you were going to use it as a SatNav (with the screen on) then you're going to either kill the battery while driving, or soon after.
Why couldn't Sony produce a holder that could charge via the pogo pins? Imagine how good that would be! Then include a smart tag (NFC) so that once you put the phone in the dock, it would connect to your car radio via Bluetooth and/or load up your SatNav software/Spotify or whatever.
And charging £40 is also a bit of a liberty if you ask me!
I hope we get a third party holder that does the above, and costs a bit less too.

agree thats a bit expensive for a holder, I just bought one on amazon for £14, which I'll modify to charge as well
Brodit
a couple of days ago I've contacted brodit if they could tell me a date when the holder for the Z1 would be available.
They told me it would take a couple of days.

There is the official one...but it just holds it. I really want one that has a charge attached, I can deal with a cable down for the headphone jack, but I can't live without power. Sony really missed a trick on that one.
Especially with the magnetic charger port, and the fact they're even selling the cable separate to the dock in some regions. How hard to rig up this very lead to a car holder?
well I did not find any sony manufactured genuine car dock for Z1 at Amazon..there are some on ebay but not find one for Z1 and they are bit expensive too....and also found some from other vendors at Fommy...they have variety of docks with reasonable prices...

That's the one I was talking about earlier. It doesn't charge, which seems rather silly as I've regularly driven for 6-7 hours in a day (albeit with breaks) using satellite navigation, and there's no way the Z1 would cope with that and not die part way through.
I really did expect it would have been a dock with an integral magentic charger. Of course, you can presumably rig up a separate cable of your own - but you'd expect to buy something that looks sleek and designed for the phone.
Of all the Sony accessories, this has to be the worst.
Just ordered on if these: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/ultra-desktop-dock-for-sony-xperia-z1-p41456.htm
Will use some sticky tape and stick it on my dash. Been using a Galaxy Nexus the same way with the desktop dock, works great, just drop the phone in the dock when you get in the car.
Any hard breaking and your phone will fall out of the dock and either smash into your windshield or in your face. I'd not use those dock type of holders.
It's not perfect, but I plan on using my iBolt I have had for several phones now, and just ordered a couple magnetic usb cables from EBay. I'll just attach it to the back and leave it dangling. Then I can simply flick it in place when required. Should work! I just wish the Z1 had the analogue USB audio with charging the S4 has......only thing I miss so far!
How many phones do carry audio via USB? The Motorola Atrix did (very nice car kit) but I've not found a phone since.
I like the dock but price is a bit steep. The only problem I have with my universal dock is that since all buttons are locked on one side its very hard to place without hitting the volume of camera button. I'm sure soon we will see some aftermarket copy cats that sell it a at a reasonable cost .
Brodit has a Car holder ready! Not sure if it's a 2a or 1a charger and if there will be a passive charger.
http://brodit.se/productList.html?brand=Sony&model=Xperia+Z1&pn=prod
I got answer from Brodit.
The charger on the active dock is a 2a charger.
There will be an passive holder.

Brodit always look so tacky though.
Considering there is a charge point on the bottom someone could design a nice looking dock.
The deskdock would work if it had a slightly higher back and then a clip that could fold up and hold onto the top of the phone.
It needs to be a design that doesn't look like it has been made in metal shop by a 7 year old when the phone is not in there.
Yeah I believe this is definitely something Sony need to wake up about, because these sort of things will hold them back. Sony need to ask themselves a question what is going to be the thing that is going to piss people off the most. Obviously opening and closing flaps every day. Love the headphones jack with no opening and closing flaps .
For a flagship phone people expect lots of accessories for the phone, extra battery life, protective cases, docks, car kits... I purchased the Xperia Z outright, and then expecting some accessories for the phone to be released after, and finally pretty much nothing, what seriously hoping for a car kit to utilise the charge pins. As a consumer I feel abandoned by Sony .
They have made come some way with the Xperia Z1 offering quite a few accessories at launch date, but note most if not almost all of them are generic. It shouldn't be 100% other companies responsibility to provide accessories for a flagship phone, it is Sony's and who cares if other Companies may manufacturer accessories.
I now have the Xperia Z1 and happy with the phone, and now in the same situation as everyone in thread looking for a car kit again, a little bit better this time because there is a possibility that I don't have to keep on opening a flaps any more.
Due to this I am sure a lot of people are not buying Sony phones regardless of how good they are. Come on Sony I really think you will find that a huge percentage of people require car kits, as they use phones for an in car gps, in addition most countries will fine you if you are not using your phone hands free.

I'm using the passive holder from Brodit/ProClip. It makes sense for me since I already had the car mount from a previous phone. It works quite well but it is overpriced for a simple piece of plastic. I don't like their powered options so am just using a magnetic charging cable with it.

Z1 case and car holder 2in1 (DIY)
Hi , I found solution which works for me so I decided to share with you.
Bought Wallet Stand Case for 4.95 on ebay and adapt my old, unused car mount for nokia 5800.
I cut off some corners of holder cradle to get flat surface and glued it to the back of the case. There are some pics..

What I like in it is when I want to use my Z1 as sat nav the phone is still safe in its case with access to any buttons and no need to shift between case and car holder. Also you can use magnet charging cable as it easy access to magnet socket.

Wireless car charging setup

I wanted a wireless charging setup for my Samsung S6 edge, and this is what I came up with using the following parts.
The clamps to hold phone work perfect for holding the wireless pad, and the phone snaps in and out easily.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005PK1D7E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use this for mine;
http://www.theairdock.com/
I don't like using sticky pads, and I didn't want it on my dashboard, out of reach.
And it's $100
Question:
WHile using GPS navigation with wireless charging, how fast goes the battery charge? Or does it charge at all or discharge instead?
That looks pretty neat. Do you have any pics to share of how it works with the cup holder? My only concern about that set up is that my cup holder is right next to me, and I'm not sure how ackward the reach woud be considering the phone might be almost too close...if that makes any sense.
While using waze and playing music, it charges. Not fast, but it does charge. I'll get some more pictures.
Nice ingenuity! Thanks for sharing! I was considering picking one of these up to see if they would work:

Another pic as promised.
I'm planning to combine a Qi charging pad with my Neutron S magnetic mount.. hopefully it works, haven't tested it.
Here's the Neutron S: http://www.bungajungle.com/collections/all/products/neutron-s?variant=994256488
I was going to get the Anker Qi charging pad especially because its 6mm, very close to the Neutron S's 6.35mm height. Add on some double sided tape and it'll probably sit right up against the back of the phone when mounted.
Sadly, reviews say the Anker Qi pad doesnt work with reliably with our phones for some damn reason o_o
i bought this one :
Qifull
but it constantly disconnected and reconnected to the point of making it useless and i tried all kinds of things but no chance it can be reliable. i went looking for a better solution but REALLY liked everything about it other than charging issue.
sadly there were a few more like CHOE Upgraded Qi and the Qi-infinity but if you look closely they are the same thing from different sellers.
i havent found a simple purchase option yet and looking.
the problem seems to be the placement of the 3 coils in relation to where the phone sits on the charging pad.
i do own this CHOE Stadium and it works great and have looked at other standard docks to see how i could incorporate into something but nothing has met my qualifications yet.
All I know is that the setup I posted works flawlessly even with a case.

in my Ram Truck that doesnt work well for me though and a suction cup holder and i had the perfect setup with my Note 3 with this iBolt Dock
i looked at ways to add a qi pad inside it but not going to work with that one.
i will probably end up buying items and building something and your cup holder idea is nice just not for me.

Project QI charging case for Xperia V

Hi,
I love the idea of wireless charging, especially with a waterproof phone so you don't need flaps or something like that for the charging port.
Ok, well the charging port of the xperia phones is very nice and I was using a dock quite a long time.
But hey, lets try charging the phone via qi.
This is the case thei the receiver mounted:
Since I decided modding the phone itself is not possible until larger modifications are made I decided modding a case to become a charging case.
The dock-ports are ideal for this.
So I bought a QI reciever. The reciever for the Samsung galaxy note II would do the job because the polarity matches with the polarity of the dock port (the upper one on the phone is the positive terminal).
The first receiver I bought was mechanically perfect because it is very small and thin. I taped it to a QI charger and connected the pins via lab wires to the phone. Unfortunately the receiver starts pulsing its output. I think the phone draws more current than the receiver could handle. Watching the receivers output with a scope showd that the receiver has much ripple and the voltage is around 7 V. This is to much, luckily the phone took no damage.
Here is a photo of the bad one:
So I bought a second receiver.
I'm from germany so, this is a link to german amazon.
You have to remove the 2 gold pins and replace them with 2 spring contacts.
I was using these contacts:
Put the receiver in the case, put in the phone and align it, so the spring contacts can touch the dock connector.
The remove the phone, fix the receiver with some tape and use a 2 component epoxy the fix the part with the spring contacts at its correct position.
Oh, and cut a hole for the flashlight led of the phone.
I used J-B-Kwik.
I uses the glue also at the outside to provice stability:
the case is just a bit to small for phone and receiver but it holds the phone nicely.
I forgot my qi charge at the office so I cannot provice a image with the phone charging, I can take a picture tomorrow.
Yes, the performance would be better if the receiver is mounted below the plastic case between plastic and leather. But is is to big for that. Even cutten the edged is not enough.
Here is a comparison with the old, non working receiver, it is smaller and I cut the edged.
I works well enough.
Hopefully this would be usefull for somebody.
I you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
because I am a new user I am not allowed to post links

Is there any way to get Qi wireless charging with this phone?

I am considering buying an Xperia X because of the Wet finger tracking. My current Samsung doesn't support that, and since I do a bit of lobster and crab fishing, and I use an app (Fishing Points) to note what I get and where I put the pots, I am rather annoied with the Samsung since any drop of water on it will mess up my usage. And trying to dry out a phone in a small boat is kind of annoying. But then I see that the X doesn't support Qi wireless charging, and I have that in my home office, my car, on my motorcycle and next to my bed. Going back to where I have to actually plug in a cable seems so incredibly stone age. So are there any solutions for Qi compatible wireless charging that works on this, and that doesn't compromise waterproofing?

Yes, add a USB receiver.
Thanks, I see that you have that phone! You mean with the flat cable going into the battery bay? I did look into that, but found that it will compromise the waterproof seal. Or is there a way to do it that doesn't?

It's a receiver that connects through the USB port of the phone, it do e's not affect any waterproof seal, although you probably need to dry the usb port before charging, this is the same with all phone if it just came out of water.
Thanks! But do you mean that I have to plug that in every time I need to charge the phone and then put it in the Qi charger, or that it's stuck to the outside of the phone? In the first case it's really just another way of plugging in a regular charger...

Go to ebay and search for qi receiver, there are many available, although depending which one you get will vary in quality.
Yeah, I've seen those. I'm afraid they will be ripped off in my pocket, I think. So maybe the best bet is two phones and a twin SIM, so I have one for regular use and one for fishing. Or wait until spring and see if Sony gets their act together and actually deliver an expensive phone with the most common wireless charging option.
Just use a case with the receiver, sony knows about qi, they have a offcial qi case for the Z5, but decided not to use qi, and opt for fast charging instead.
Good point, a thin case with the receiver inside would probably be a good solution! Thanks! And Sony didn't think that one through. It makes it less likely that Samsung people, who often have a bunch of QI stuff from their phones, will convert. Fast charging is OK, but I prefer to put the phone into the car holder or on the bedside table and start charging without having to plug anything.
This one could be the right type:

nillkin has the best receiver so far if you are in for a USB receiver, unlike the one's sold on ebay, they just use a thin sticker with the circuit in between, the nillkin uses thin plasic, and is very stable, I have the nillkin one for my XP and V20. USB is availabl;e in two version, A and B.
The offcial sony one is pretty thick, not worth buying, but that is for the Z5 only.
Thanks! I'll get that when I change phone, then. But the picture is of a case I can use on the phone, not a receiver.
In case anybody else wants to try this, it works. But not with the pictured case, that creates pressure on the back of the phone which gives color blotches on the screen. So I found my solution in a so called "Slim Rubber Gel Case Cover" and the Nillkin receiver. Problem solved, and it works quite nicely. I rarely need to to connect my phone with the USB, but it's quite easy to pop off the case and remove the receiver.
