Red lines (burn in) on 1 year old phone! - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there, my Moto X 2014 is just over a year old and I am facing this unusual premature burn in across the length of the display.
This should not happen so early and the Moto Service Centre is quoting Rupees 15000 ($250 approx) to replace it for me. :/
I am extremely unhappy with this issue and would like some help.
Thanks in advance!

EDIT - The pictures aren't too clear (Taken with my Nexus 7) so I'll try to upload clearer ones when the sun rises tomorrow.

[Q] Stuck Pixel

Hey guys, I just got a replacement of my One (previous one had capacitative buttons' light leaking out of the rightmost bottom part). I just noticed that I have a stuck pixel in here (white) and but not black (which means it's dead, right?). So I was thinking to get a replacement again, but I'm afraid that the other one may have more stuck / dead pixels than this one, because I've read people complaining about multiple pixel problems. So, what do you guys say? Should I get a replacement or just wait for the pixel to un-stuck itself?
The only thing that irks me is that it's in the middle of the whole screen.
*BUMP*
Anyone?
There's a few apps that help with stuck pixels, they just flash the screen multiple colors until the pixel fires correctly.
I had 3 stuck pixels when I got this phone but within a week they fixed themselves
Sent from my Tricked out HTC One
I have about 6 dead/stuck pixels. Tried the apps for a hour, i just requested a new device. Waiting for htc to send me another one before i ship mine back

I did use this app, the impact of the stuck pixel have seemed to be lowered (ran the app 3 times for 30 minutes) as compared to before. But it didn't vanish completely.
Ignore it... I had my HTC One for 2 months now and when I got it there was no stuck pixels... Then within the 2 months usage stuck pixel are popping out and just disappearing within days of ignoring it. Some last for weeks but they all eventually disappeared. I only have 1 stuck pixel now on my unit where somewhere within the 1st month it manage to produce up to 6 stuck pixels.
Wow. I was just thanking my stars a couple days ago that my One was perfect. No gaps in the corners, no dead pixels, no faulty camera, no nothing. But it bricked and now I'm gonna have to get a replacement. Hope my luck holds out.

Just for the clarification; was it a white pixel? And if you increase the brightness of the screen, the brightness of the stuck pixel also increases?
Yes it is white sometimes changing color constantly I know what stuck, hot and dead pixels are
And by the way it's not noticeable on lowest brightness so yeah it's visible only on high brightness

Thanks a bunch, you saved me from getting my second replacement. I was just clarifying my concept of stuck pixel, and not judging your knowledge.
Oh yeah, and what was the average period they got fixed by themselves? How many days / weeks?
Like I said it's random... Only those I've noticed is 4days, 9 days and the longest was I think 5 weeks I always noticed the 5 weeks because it seems like 2 pixels got stuck which is side by side to each other so it created a much brighter white. But it got fixed by itself in 5 weeks estimate. Not sure how it got fixed though probably the constant video playback(I'm an anime junky) or must have cured itself because I'm always setting brightness to the lowest level.
If pixel fixers which changes color everytime does indeed fix these issues then I'm pretty sure it got fixed because of the video playback... Watching anime videos for 4 hours a day sometimes 8 on weekends is an overkill for constant color shifts.

Did you ever try pixel fixer? And that anime stuff is very interesting (changing colors). I used pixel curer for like 80+ minutes on my phone but the pixel doesn't even change itself from white or I think I might not be able to notice as it is so small.
Thanks for all the help, I am limited to 8 thanks / day, so as soon as 24 hours pass on, I'll thank you for all your posts.

80minutes is nothing compared to mine... When I watch an anime you can compare it to running pixel fixer for 4 hours a day And like I said it get's fixed in days or even weeks.
So running 80minutes of pixel fixer is not even comparable to what I do on my phone
xperia e stuck piel
I recently got an xperia e on orange pay as you go from my local carphone warehouse. Last night i noticed a blue/white spot on the screen. After looking at the screen closely more smailer specs appear when you tilt the device around but this one stays visible throughout. They are especially visible in the dark but not so much in sunlight. Another thing to note is that it only appears on dark backgrounds e.g. black.
I have tried a stuck pixel fixer for about half an hour but to no avail.
Since its only a few days old i thought i could return it to carphone warehouse but dose anyone have experience of doing this. I know, because i got my phone on orange, that i can not just replace it for no reason. However i would like to know would they try to fob me off by saying that they can't see them or saying there needs to be more of them to warrant a return. There are a few other things i could say to get a return. For example the proximity sensor does not work in the diagnostics app and there is "no signal" at my house Its hard to get a picture of it otherwise i would've included one.
So really my question is should i try and return it (in the uk we have pretty strong consumer laws (the sale of goods act)) or should I just ignore it and run the flashing light show for longer.
Thanks
James
I though i had a white stuck pixel on my notification bar, i took a screen shot, and it appears on the image, so it appears it is part of the stock htc one wallpaper.

[Q] Switching to Moto X 2014?

Is there anyone who made this move already, dumping the Razr i for a 2014 Moto X? I'm considering this step heavily at the moment but I'm really worrying about switching to a much larger phone.. I love the dimensions of the XT890 really.
I would love to hear about the experience of anyone who already switched, or the openion of anyone who is considering it currently like me..
I don't have moto x and wish Motorola would release a best competitor for Xperia 3 Compact. Moto X was very good but 2nd Generation it's just too big for me
Now that you mention, a couple of months ago it was claimed that Motorola will release maybe eight phones till the end of this year? I'm not sure about the actual number but it was something like that.. and yeah, a thin phone about 12.5-13cm height would be just perfect.
Still,I feel the new X quite tempting, I think I could get used to its size. I did not yet see it in person though..
my brother have moto x , and my voice can activate moto x, and the face unlock is unlocked by my face.. lol
so voice chip of moto x sucks
i just switched to Galaxy S5 with 5.1 inch FullHD.
After one day of usage i will never go back to Razri because of the screensize and resolution.

Did the jump to Moto X(2014).
It's BIG and I have small hands. Nearly sent it back after two days.
But now after a week I am getting used to it and don't want to go back.
It's fast, smooth, the voice commands are great (taking a call while being in the shower).
The build quality feels awesome.
Try it for your self but beware it takes a while to get used to it.

oh, Motorola UK made the decision easier for me. I placed the order for the new X on Cyber Monday and they cancelled it because it was paid by a non-UK debit card. No hard feelings, "their country, their rules.." as I learnt in Switzerland
I'll keep the Razr i for now (I have small hands too and I love its form factor) and I might get a Sony Z3 Compact one day (or its successor), we'll see..

I just jumped from the RAZR I to the z1 compact. As I did get a moto g but sold that and went back to the RAZR I. But at the start of this month a was feed up with the RAZR I but like its size so ended up getting the Sony z1c and so glad I did its the same size as the RAZR I just a bit thicker.
And to be honest there is such a difference. Ie RAZR I 2ghz 1 core Sony z1c 2.2ghz 4 core.
Also the entire Sony Z range is awaiting a aosp 5.0 update starting early 2015.
Don't get me wrong there are down side's to the z1 z1c z2 z3 and z3c. Main one for me being the glass back. As a result it well only stay still on a flat surface even on a slight angle it just slides. (Meaning I can't lean my phone agents things on a table/side board as it just slips over.
IMO although a 20.7 mp camera I think the RAZR I camera is better don't get me wrong on the z1c the picture is very crisp BUT when zoomed they become blurred more so then on the RAZR I which is only 8mp. This said the Sony camera stock app has so many features such as AR shot, motion shot, time shift and so on.
Every day use is so much faster and smoother on the z1c apart from again the camera which loads faster on the RAZR I although using time shift on the z1c is as fast as burst on the RAZR I. But 20 shots on z1c and 10 on the RAZR I again IMO the razr I burst gives better images.
Look and feel.
Apart from the glass back there really is no difference between the RAZR I and the z1c. ( I know the z3c is slightly bigger)
And IMHO for a device the same size be it the z1c or the slightly bigger z3c when it comes to mini phone's there is no other mini phone that comes close the the z1c/z3c in spec. lG G3s and Samsung galaxy s4 mini are half the spec. Where the z1c and z3c are the same spec as the full size z1 and z3.
Overall
I think if you are OK with the glass back (I got a case)
Then you can't at the moment you can't get a better replacement then the z1/3c in the same size as the RAZR I
This is just my opinion!!!

I doubt I'll ever buy another Motorola phone after being a fan over 10 years. Starting with the locking of the bootloader on my OG RAZR, and the dismal lack of updates on the entire RAZR line, I'm done. If I ever come back to Android, it will probably be to a company that both promises and delivers upgrades and support. Maybe Sony, maybe Nexus.

Not to mention disabling the FM radio. Total BS.

Did the same jump (Razr i --> Moto X 2014). I have big hands and love the bigger screen ; ) Voice commands are not for me.
What persuaded me never to go back is the Active Display! It is really superior to a notification LED even though it took a while to get used to the missing LED. Just hold your hands in the proximity of the phone and the notification/clock screen will light up. And if there are notifications, the screen will actually pulse on and off unless the phone is in your pocket ...

I made the jump to the Sony Z3 Compact (orange one). I love it's size, performance, battery and the incredible build quality of the product a lot, and I really do miss the AMOLED display. Regardless, I consider it to be an excellent decision.
I made the jump to OnePlus One, I don't regret a single thing about it but what happened to me today made me love my razr i, you've gotta read this, although most of you won't believe it but still it is worth telling.
It ocurred to me that the battery wasn't working well in the razr so I fired Antutu and started a stability test as I was relaxing at the pool. I left my phone under a little space that the table has (by the pool). My mother who is 70% blind moved the table to the otherside of the pool while she was cleaning it. The phone fell into the almost empty pool while running the stability test and it WENT INTO THE FILTER (THE ONE USED TO CLEAN THE POOL, SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH). Luckily the filter has a previous filter without entering the water bomb that saved the phone. One hour later I come by the pool again to pick the phone and it just wasn't there, I saw the table had been moved so I asked my mom and she said she didn't know where the phone was. It ocurred to me it might be over the side of the pool, by the grass or the trees so I searched for it and I saw the light through one of the filter holes that is supposed to show the moment that you have to clean it, YES, THE PHONE WAS RUNNING THE STABILITY TEST AT 93% COMPLETION, I WAS SHOCKED....
The camera doesn't work, neither does the volume up button, one hour of water, absoultely incredible.
MOTOROLA, MAKE MORE OF THIS DAMN GOOD PHONES PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASEEEEEEE.
I just wished I had bought the Moto X or the Droid MAXX.....

[Q] Static lines & bands on screen. Yes, please help.

Guys,
I've tried 3 different phones from Flipkart. The first one had the famous yellow tint issue which was down to a minimum in the next 2 devices that i tried so I guess it all depends on luck. But as luck would have it or OCD , I had new issues with them.
Both the replacement devices that I have tried so far have these 2 issues below:
1. Weird horizontal bands visible across the screen on light backgrounds (white/grey) most prominent on low brightness. They really annoy you when scrolling through your Twitter feed or any apps with a white background (Most on Lollipop!)
Best way to check these are in the default android dialogs of WiFi password or language choice.
2. I see static lines horizontal lines on the screen everytime the screen is touched and they disappear after 2 seconds of the touch. Again easiest way to check this would be to open the gallery and pull in the hamburger menu from the left. When touched to pull, mine shows prominent static/disturbance sort of ripples.
Can you guys check and tell me if these are common issues since both my replacement devices have these & I am really not upto trying another device after all the hassle.
Thanks.
I'll see the horizontal lines as well on light backgrounds, I just assumed it's a side affect of amoled.
Perhaps the lcd is defective?

Can confirm that my screen also has the issue #1. I always thought it was probably a large AMOLED screen issue. Never faced issue #2 though. I also got mine from flipkart.
Issue 1 is what bothers me the most. Scrolling on white backgrounds is annoying, you feel these bands are not moving & look prominent.
Even more worried since everything's going white in Lollipop.

Though I dont have a similar problem but I am pretty annoyed with my purchase. My first device was replaced since it developed screen-burn within few days of usage. Surprisingly, the second device has also developed screen-burn after 10 days of usage and the nav keys are permanently embossed on the screen which can be clearly seen on grey backgrounds.
The strangest part I found about both the devices was they were turned on right out of the box One click to the power button and the phone was already in the setup mode asking to select a language. White color reproduction is way off on this device and looks pale yellow instead of white I somehow feel that I should have stuck with my Nexus 5 instead of falling for this. At-least for now, I'm done with AMOLED's
So have you returned the Moto X?
Motorola seems to have major QC issues. Distorted speaker, yellow tint, weird lines and burn-in.
It's a great phone but the screen has major issues. I am on the fence now about trying a 4th replacement device but worried it'll have more issue.

They are not there all the time. Only on light backgrounds. Best way I can describe it is if you've ever seen a plasma TV that gets horizontal purplish lines going vertically from a color source on an all white background. The horizontal lines on my phone follow the dark letters/images as I scroll up and down.
And I actually RMA'd the phone today because of it.

I had the dark horizontal bands on my replacement device they sent for the back separating. They were very prominent on light backgrounds and very distracting. I chose to keep my original device because the screen is perfect on it. I didn't want to take chances with replacements beyond that. I took pictures and notified Motorola of the issue.

Oh, I've been pretty unlucky so far in that case, haven't got a screen without these bands. Well atleast there is hope.
But there's the same concern, will the replacement be better or worse than the one you have. In India, we have to hand over the device at the same time, so cannot compare the two devices.

So, I have not heard a thing from moto about my RMA label. On the site it said I'd get an email in 4 business hours, well all day and nothing. I'll have to call tomorrow I guess.
Well... Moto has no record of my RMA and I lost the RMA number because I took a screen shot and the pic didn't sync before I blew my current phone clean. They tried my IMEI and SN and contact info, it's like it never happened. They said they could try looking at the RMA number, but, I don't have it. No confirmation email either at the time of entering it.
So, I'm not going to bother again right now as others have said the replacements do the same. I got the two year warranty, so if the screen does eventually go dead, oh well.
What I will warn others of, is to WRITE DOWN the RMA number!
My first device was perfect - but I returned due to a scratch on the wood back. Second device is half yellow, half white tint with horizontal lines. It's like playing the lottery because the qc is still awful on amoled. I wouldn't mind if the full screen was yellow even but the half and half is terrible. Yellow can be fixed with color tweaks and wasn't all that bothersome anyway.
I have one dark line across the screen. I chatted in with them and I have to call them and ask for the REST department since mine was a custom one.

I've seen this once or twice, it appears to be when the phone is on 2G and data is on 900Mhz LTE.
But I can't say it's very visible, I can barely make out a pixel or two vibrating in very specific settings.

The bands across the screen bother a lot more than the static lines. Hope Lollipop comes soon so I can make a final decision.

You should try to capture it on a video clip, my lines are just barely visible in low light.
Film it and send it back for warranty with that video as proof. And post it here, I'm curious to what it looks like.
I'm pretty sure it's the LTE radio, because I can just barely make out the noise in my computer speakers when it's pinging the GSM tower.
Much like when old phones use 2G mode, but at a way faster rate and not as loud.
You might have gotten phones from a batch where they forgot EMI shielding or something like that.

Grainy screen?

I received my Moto X about 3 weeks ago, but noticed on white/light backgrounds, the screen appeared grainy. So last week I called Motorola to ask for an exchange, which they did. I received the new Moto X today, but it's suffering from the same grainy screen as my other one. Does anyone else have this issue with their X? My old Note 2 did not suffer from this, and they are both AMOLED screens.
Also interesting to note, the first Moto X was assembled in the US and the second one in China, so I assume the screens came from two different batches.

Yes, even I had this issue but after comparing with others I realised it's normal. They grainy are only visible if you really pay attention and scroll slowly. Eg. Gmail app.
I've learn to live it though.

I never thought to explain it as "grainy", but yes, I have it too. I almost RMAed it for that as it sometimes looked like lines going across the screen when scrolling. Actually, I did RMA it, but moto couldn't find it in there system for a week. I finally got the email, but haven't called them back yet.
same here... its more like texture, and you do see the lines when scrolling.
Is it worth trying to RMA it again until I get one with a good screen? I would certainly consider this a flaw, especially when spending $500 on a phone. I truly do enjoy the phone otherwise.

It's the pentile screen nothing wrong with it. I have the grainy screen too.
Grainy is normal. Horizontal or vertical lines are not - also tint issues are not normal. My screen is 50-60% yellow tinted and the remainder white, not normal - rma'ed it and awaiting my replacement.
Thanks for the help everyone. I am also noticing faint horizontal lines on both Moto X's on white/light backgrounds, but the replacement from China seems to have more than the original, and has a red tint to it. I'll be calling Motorola in the morning.

Bad qc on amoled. It's a gamble...
Yes. You can another thread that I created: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/help/static-lines-bands-screen-yes-please-t2935981
Currently I am just using the device since there's absolutely no guarantee the next one would be any better given that these issue are common. The QC is really bad.

Moto X (2014) grainy display

Hello!
Yesterday I bought brand new Moto X 2nd gen. Just as I turned it up for the first time I noticed some weird grain on screen. Its more visible on brighter color a like white or even green-grey color lollipop uses when notification bar is pulled down. I didn't see much people reporting this problem so I decided I will post here first. Some people were saying this is how it is on every Pentile Matrix amoled screen, but I have to disagree. Never seen any galaxy suffering for this problem before. The grain is most noticable while scrolling and its always at the same place.
Amoled is always a part of a reason why I bought this phone-never had problems before. I like everything about this phone, so I really wouldnt want this to be a deal-breaker. I still have 2 years of warranty, but I am afraid that next moto would have same problems. Can some guys verify they don't have this un-clean like grain over whole display?
Motorola Moto X 2nd gen. XT1092
Model: SM3958AN7T1
Lollipop 5.0.1 - 5.1 (updated recently, problem persists)
Help me out guys, what should I do? Go for replacement?
Thanks, H

Go for a replacement. I have no grain at all.

I'm not really sure by what you mean by grain, but my display is absolutely fine. Bought my XT1097 2 days ago.. I think you should go for a replacement

Thank you both for quick answers. Well I might have gone for grainy instead of grain. Try googling grainy effect, and you will see where I am aiming .
I am contacting place where I got my phone from now. I will let you know.
Thanks, H

You fixed screen?
Hello guys, my Moto X 2014 (XT1092) suffers from the same problem. I can see this grainy effect on the screen especially with white backgrounds, on the material keyboard and notification bar. What I have to do?
AMOLED just like that. White is not as white as on LCD/ IPS. It is normal
Well, a bit O-T here, but I thought I'd ask: how's the low brightness level on the phone?
Are the whites really turning blueish or other shades and how bright is it? I ask because I read one comment before where the person was saying that the display temains quite (too) bright even at the lowest setting and was saying that this is not a very good phone for night reading....
I bought (and returned a LG G2 before where it was the opposite: screen was too dark for normal use with any setting lower than 35%...)
Any input on this?
Edit: nevermind, soon after posting this I watched a video review where the guy was showing and saying that brightness can be dimmed down a lot and that it was fine for pre-bed time reading.
Brightness of my Moto X at mid level, automatic. Can still see the problem under the sunlight, with my eye near the screen.
i have the exact same problem too !! is this normall. it makes the screen look REALLY bad!!
Guys, Amaz sent me the replacement and the problem is still there.
